    It's a couple of days after opening day here in Jacksonville and we are hosting the Carolina Mud Cats. The call comes to the bullpen and they summon me to go in with 2 out and a runner on first in the top of the 7th with us trailing 1-0. I get my first batter to fly out to end the inning and then was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 7th. The Suns scored a run in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game but Carolina scored in the top half of the 10th and they won, 2-1. It wasn't anything fancy for me, just a fastball on the first pitch and that ended the inning.

      The call arrives late in the game for me to go in with 1 out and no one on in the top of the 7th with the Suns losing to the Mud Cats, 4-1. I give up a hit in the inning plus one in the top of the 8th but that was all as I held them scoreless for the 1 2/3 innings. Carolina ended up beating us, 6-1, as their pitching held us to only 4 hits.

      After the game I was given five goals to reach in the first three weeks.

      1. Increase splitter control over the next 5 series
      2. Increase my bb/9 attribute over the next 5 series
      3. Allow 3 or less earned runs
      4. Allow 6 or less hits
      5. Have an opponent's batting average lower than .200

        I am certainly getting used a lot this week as I am summoned from the bullpen in the top of the 6th with no one on and 2 out to preserve a 4-4 tie. I get the batter to ground out and we take the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the 6th after I flew out to center to start the bottom half of the 6th. I throw a 1-2-3 7th inning then was pulled. Carolina ends up scoring a pair of runs in the top of the 8th and they won the game, 6-5.

          It's our first road trip and we are taking on the Huntsville Stars. I am summoned from the bullpen to enter the bottom of the 7th inning with a runner on first, no one out and Jacksonville leading, 1-0. I allow a hit but hold the Stars scoreless as I get a couple of ground outs and an inning ending flyout to get out of the jam in the 7th. I end up pitching only that inning and the Suns went on to win, 1-0.

            Doesn't the manager read the scouting reports? I am called in again, my fourth appearance in five days, this time to start the 5th inning with the Suns down 4-0. I gave up back-to-back doubles and a 2-run blast by #17 as three runs are in this inning. After we score a run in the top of the 6th, I throw a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning and then was lifted.

              A couple of days later I was called into the manager's office. Because of an injury to one of our starters the team was short and he wanted me to fill in until the starter comes back. I told him okay and then went out to get ready for my first start of the season.

                The Suns are back home and the Mobile Bay Bears are in town as I make my first start of the season for Jacksonville. I gave up a solo homer to #28 in the top of the 4th and then surrendered two more runs in the top of the 5th. We came back with a run in the bottom half of the 5th to tie the game and it remained that way through the top of the 7th when I left the mound at the end of the inning. I was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 7th and the Suns scored three times to take a 6-3 lead. I had scattered 9 hits during my 7 innings of work and it was now up to the bullpen. Jacksonville holds the Bay Bears scoreless the rest of the way and I record my first win of the year, 6-3.

                          Thanks guys.

                          The one thing that I noticed was when I went to view the roster, my name was at the top. That's probably due to possibly having the top overall rating (rating meter longer than all the others). The overall grade on my "baseball card" scouting report is now up to "C".

                            The Suns are on the road as we head into Chattanooga to take on the Lookouts. Today is my first start since being named the #1 starter. God I hope that they know what they are doing.

                            In the first inning I gave up a leadoff home run to Alex Cora then settled down and only allowed one more run through 8 innings. Jacksonville got single runs in the 4th and 5th innings and the score was tied, 2-2, when I left. The run that we got in the fifth inning to tie the game was from a single to center by me. I ended up going 1-2 with the rbi plus a sacrifice bunt. We ended up losing the game, 3-2, in 12 innings. As my pitches are breaking more and more, the batters are starting to take pitches. We'll see what happens in a few days when my turn comes up again.

                              We are back home and hosting the Mississippi Braves as my turn in the rotation comes around. The hits are starting to pile up again as I scatter 8 hits through 7 innings and allowed 3 runs. I was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 7th and the Suns come back to tie the game but the bullpen collapsed and allowed 4 runs in the top of the 8th to give the Braves a 7-3 win.

                                The Birmingham Barons roll into town as we continue our home stand. I give up 9 hits, including a solo home run to #18 in the 2nd inning, through 7 innings and left for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 7th with us trailing 3-2. In the 7th inning I allowed the #8 hitter to reach with a single and the pitcher bunted him over to second. I then struck out the next two hitters, giving me 8 Ks for the game, to get out of the jam. The Suns scored four runs in the bottom of the 7th to take a 6-3 lead but the bullpen failed again and allowed the Barons to tie the game with 3 runs in the top of the 8th. A solo walkoff homerun won the game for us, 7-6. This game was the first time in quite a while for me to strikeout more than a hitter per inning in any of my starts.

                                After the game, the manager took me aside and told me that I did a great job in getting out of that jam in the top of the 7th inning and that was a game changing moment.
