    Game #147

    ARIZONA 3, LOS ANGELES 2

Rookie Gabriel Guerrero's recorded his first two Major League hits on Friday night..

    9/16/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks used some help from an unlikely source on Friday night as they once again edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2. Rookie Gabriel Guerrero hit an RBI triple and two-run double to provide all the offense that the DBacks would need as they moved into a National League Wild Card spot.

Once again, Tyler Clippard came on to shut down the Dodgers.
In the fourth, Guerrero hit a two-out triple off of the wall just in front of the pool, scoring Jake Lamb, to put Arizona up 1-0.

In the sixth, Guerrero hit a two-out, two-run double to center, scoring Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta to put the DBacks up 3-0.

That was all that starter Rubby De La Rosa would need. He went seven strong innings, scattering four hits and allowing no runs. He struck out four, while walking one as he picked up his 10th win.

It got a little dicey in the ninth though. After Silvino Bracho worked a scoreless eighth, Brad Zeigler came on to try and close it out in the ninth. It didn't work out too well. He gave up a lead off single to Andre Eithier, then hung a curveball that Justin Turner hit into the seats in left to pull Los Angeles to within 3-2. Carl Crawford then lined a pinch hit single to right, ending Zeigler's night without recording an out.

Tyler Clippard came on and got the final three outs to secure the huge win. It was his 11th save and moved the Dbacks to within four of the Giants in the National League West and into one of the National League Wild Card spots with just 15 games left in the season.

Gabriel Guerrero recorded his first two Major League hits on Friday night getting the start in left in place of Yasmany Tomas. He doubled, tripled and drove in three runs.

The series continues on Saturday evening with Shelby Miller (12-7, 2.76) taking on Ross Stripling (11-8, 3.91).

It's going to be an exciting and nerve racking race to the finish for the D-Backs, good luck the rest of the way.

Maybe I missed it somewhere and I apologize if I did, but where are Kershaw and Urias for the Dodgers?

          Game #148

          ARIZONA 5, LOS ANGELES 3

David Peralta has been on fire as of late.

          9/17/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks seemed to have righted the ship thanks to the Los Angeles Dodgers. On Saturday evening, the DBacks won their third straight from the Dodgers, 5-3 at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix. Shelby Miller tossed seven strong innings to move the DBacks to within a game of St. Louis for the top National League Wild Card spot.

Socrates Brito slides into third with an RBI triple.
Arizona (84-64) fell behind in the first on a Corey Seager RBI double, scoring Adrian Gonzalez. But after that, Shelby Miller settled down and shut down the Dodgers. He went seven innings, allowing just that one earned run, while scattering just three additional hits and striking out nine.

After tying the game in the second on a sacrifice fly from Jake Lamb, Yasmany Tomas would put the DBacks in front in the third with an RBI single.

Arizona would add one in the fifth on a David Peralta RBI single to left. In the seventh, Chris Herrmann hit a pinch hit double, and score on a Socrates Brito triple. Brito would then score on a David Peralta RBI double to make it 5-1.

Archie Bradley would give a couple back in the top of the eighth. After striking out Yasiel Puig and Kike Hernandez, he walked Adrian Gonzalez and gave up a single to Corey Seager. A wild pitch moved the runners over and Andre Eithier snuck one past Ketel Marte into right for a two-run single to cut the DBacks lead to 5-3. Bradley would get Justin Turner to strike out to get out of the inning.

Daniel Hudson would pitch the ninth, allowing Yasmani Grandal to reach third on a single and two wild pitches, but he got out of it and earned his team best 24th save on the year.

David Peralta powered the offense, going 3 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a walk. He raised his batting average up to .299.

Ross Stripling (11-9) took the loss for the Dodgers, who have now lost 4 of 5 and trail the DBacks by four in the National League Wild Card hunt.

The series wraps on Sunday as Arizona goes for the sweep. They have now won six straight against the Dodgers. Mike Bolsinger (0-3, 10.47) takes the ball for the Dodgers, and he will face Robbie Ray (9-9, 3.84).

            Game #149

            ARIZONA 5, LOS ANGELES 1

Robbie Ray got the job done on the mound as the DBacks swept LA.

            9/18/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks completed a four game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon as sun drenched Chase Field, 5-1. Robbie Ray allowed just on erun in six innings of work, striking out nine and walking two to earn his 10th victory.

Socrates Brito went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI in the victory.
Arizona would grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single to right from catcher Brian McCann.

The Dodgers (79-70) would tie it up in the top of the fifth. Scott Van Slyke doubled off the wall in left to open the inning and was sacrificed over to third. He scored on a Yasiel Puig line drive single to center to tie it up.

The Diamondbacks wasted no time in answering. Robbie Ray opened the bottom of the fifth with a double to right. He scored on the very next pitch as Socrates Brito doubled to left to put Arizona in front to stay.

Chris Owings doubled to open the sixth for Arizona, and scored on a Ty Rodriguez RBI single. Welington Castillo pinch hit for Brian McCann and lined a single to center, advancing Rodriguez to third. Brandon Drury then lined a pinch hit single back up the middle to score Rodriguez, making it 4-1.

Arizona (85-64) would add another run in the seventh, but it could have been much more. Chris Owings grounded into a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded that allowed Paul Goldschmidt to score.

Silvino Bracho pitched the final three innings in relief of Robbie Ray and earned the save. He allowed just one hit and struck out five.

The Diamondbacks moved into the top spot in the National League Wild Card chase with their fourth consecutive victory. They now head out on their final road trip of the season, a ten game swing to San Diego, Baltimore and Washington.

                  Game #150

                  SAN DIEGO 1, ARIZONA 0

Matt Kemp robs Paul Goldschmidt of a game tying home run in the top of the ninth..

                  9/19/16
San Diego, CA (AP) – James Shields came up big on Monday night, tossing seven shutout innings as the San Diego Padres slipped past the Arizona Diamondbacks 1-0 at Petco Park in the opener of a three game series. Christian Bethancourt's RBI single in the second was the game's lone run.

Christian Bethancort drove in the game's lone run in the second.
This one was a classic pitcher's duel from the start with James Shields and Nate Karns matching each other pitch for pitch. After a one-two-three first for Karns, he gave up a leadoff double to Brett Wallace, then hit Yangervis Solarte. He was able to strike out Adam Rosales and Melvin Upton Jr., and had Christian Bethancourt down 0-2. But Bethancourt hit a low change up into left, scoring Wallace to give the Padres the lead.

That would be all that James Shields would need. He scattered four hits and walked two over seven innings. He struck out four in picking up his 14th win.

The Padres bullpen worked the final two innings, but it wasn't easy. In the ninth, Fernando Rodney faced Paul Goldschmidt with Socrates Brito on first, and Goldy slammed a 2-0 fastball deep to right that looked like it would get out, but Matt Kemp made a leaping catch to bring the ball back and preserve the 1-0 lead. Rodney picked up his 36th save.

Nate Karns (9-9) went five innings, allowing the one run and just two hits. He struck out 10 and did not walk a batter.

The series resumes on Tuesday evening with DBacks ace Michael Pineda (16-6, 2.72) facing Andrew Cashner (12-10, 3.57). The DBacks trail the Giants by three games in the National League West, and are tied with the Mets for the second National League Wild Card with 12 games left.

                    Game #151

                    ARIZONA 2, SAN DIEGO 1 (16)

Yasmany Tomas broke the 16th inning tie with a home run off of Kevin Quackenbush.

                    9/20/16
San Diego, CA (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks needed a win on Tuesday night. It took a lot longer than expected, but they prevailed with a 2-1 victory in 16 innings over the San Diego Padres. Yasmany Tomas hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the 16th inning off of Padres closer Kevin Quackenbush, to put the DBacks ahead to stay.

Paul Goldschmidt scoops a low throw on the game ending double play.
This one was another pitcher's duel after Monday night's 1-0 Padres win. This time it was Michael Pineda and Andrew Cashner dueling on the mound. Pineda went seven innings, allowing just the one run on four hits. He struck out eight and walked none before giving way to the bullpen.

Andrew Cashner was just as good, going seven innings and allowing just the single run on three hits. He did not record a strikeout, and walked just one.

Arizona (86-65) grabbed the lead in the third inning on their first hit of the night. After Andrew Cashner sent down the first seven men that he faced, Brian McCann hit a solo home run to right to put the DBacks up 1-0. It was his 28th on the year.

The Padres (71-80) would tie it up in the seventh. John Jay doubled down the line in left to open the inning, and Matt Kemp, Monday night's hero, lined a single through the right side to score Jay.
Yangervis Solarte would hit a ground rule double to put runners on second and third with just one out. But Pineda struck out Melvin Upton Jr and Jemile Weeks to work out of it.

In the extra innings, neither team really threatened with neither team getting a runner past second base until Tomas' homer in the 16th. Tyler Clippard (7-0) picked up the win, pitching the final three innings. He allowed three hits and struck out three. He got Alexei Ramirez to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

The series will close on Wednesday evening with the rubber match with Rubby De La Rosa (10-5, 3.00) going up against Robbie Erlin (6-9, 3.38).

Note: SP Patrick Corbin (Torn Hamstring) is scheduled to come off of the 60-day Disabled List tomorrow and is ready to go according to the team. He will start in the bullpen as they try to work him back slowly and get him ready for a possible playoff run. Also, Jean Segura is scheduled to come off of the DL tomorrow and will immediately rejoin the team in Baltimore.

Rickie Weeks went 3 for 4 with a home run to pace the offense.

                      9/21/16
San Diego, CA (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks captured the rubber match of their three game series in San Diego with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday evening. Rickie Weeks, getting a spot start in left, went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to help lead the DBacks to their sixth win in their last seven games.

It was this Welington Castillo home run in the second that got the DBacks going..
Arizona would jump out to an early lead thanks to a Welington Castillo solo home run to right center in the second inning off of Robbie Erlin. Castillo led off the fourth with a ringing double to center, then scored on a Rickie Weeks two-run home run to right center.

Christian Bethancourt doubled home Alexei Amarista in the bottom half of the fourth to get the Padres on the board.

Socrates Brito led off the fifth with a single to center, and stole second. He advanced to third on a bloop single to right from Chris Owings. Owings then stole second, and the throw was dropped by shortstop Alexei Ramiez, allowing Socrates Brito to score from third, and Owings moved up to third. Owings would score on a Welington Castillo ground out to put the DBacks up 5-1.

An RBI single from John Jay and an RBI double from Wil Myers cut the DBacks lead to 5-3. But the DBacks bullpen came on in relief of Rubby De La Rosa and shut down the Padres. Archie Bradley got them out of the sixth, and worked the seventh. Randall Delgado was perfect in the eighth and ninth to close out his first save on the year.

Rickie Weeks came into the game 1 for 19 on the year, and had three hits. Paul Goldschmidt went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and he ground into a double play.

Arizona (87-65) will now head east to take on Baltimore and Washington to conclude the road portion of their 2016 season. The DBacks will wrap up the season with a three game series against these Padres next weekend in Phoenix.

#GoldschmidtHappens went deep in the fifth.
Jean Segura returned to the line up for Arizona after missing almost two months with torn calf muscle. He went 3 for 5 with a double, RBI and two stolen bases, making quite an impact in his first game back. He led the DBacks to a (64-40) mark before going out of the lineup due to injury. The team was (23-25) without him.

The Diamondbacks got on the board in the top of the second. Jake Lamb and Welington Castillo singled. Socrates Brito and Jean Segura then both came through with two-out RBI singles to put the DBacks in front 2-0.

Paul Goldschmidt homered to right in the top of the fifth. It was his 32nd on the year. Jake Lamb followed that up with a solo shot of his own in the sixth off of reliever Mycgal Givens. He hit the first pitch of the inning onto the right field porch to extend the DBacks lead to 4-0.

A Brian McCann two-out RBI single in the eighth extended the lead to 5-0. It was McCann's 77th RBI on the year.

The series resumes on Saturday night with Robbie Ray (10-9, 3.76) facing Kevin Gausman (7-10, 3.49).

Notes: Patrick Corbin made his first appearance since returning from the disabled list. He worked a perfect ninth, striking out one. The DBacks may try to get him one start before the playoffs.

Baltimore, MD (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks got another great pitching performance on Saturday night as they downed the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 at Camden Yards. Robbie Ray pitched seven solid innings, allowing just the one earned run on five hits, while striking out nine and walking none.

Robbie Ray struck out nine as he picked up his 11th win.
Arizona (89-65) with the win closed to within a game of the Giants in the National League West and a game of the Cardinals for the top Wild Card spot.

Jake Lamb got the DBacks going with a solo home run to right in the second inning off of Kevin Gausman. The 421-foot home run was Lamb's 17th on the season.

Arizona would add to their lead in the fifth. Ketel Marte lined an RBI double off of the wall in left, scoring Brian McCann. Paul Goldschmidt then hit a sacrifice fly to score Jean Segura to make it 3-0.

The suddenly red-hot Rickie Weeks hit an RBI double in the sixth to score Yasmany Tomas. Ketel Marte then hit a single through the right side with the bases loaded to score Brian McCann after Jean Segura was intentionally walked. Paul Goldschmidt grounded out to shirt to end the inning with the DBacks up 5-0.

Jonathan Schoop would break the shutout for the Orioles in the bottom of the sixth as he hit a long solo home run to left off of Robbie Ray. It was literally about the only mistake that Ray made in this one.

Ray (11-9) went seven inning before giving way to the bullpen. Josh Collmenter came on and worked a perfect eighth, then came out for the ninth, but left after getting the first out. He injured a finger on his pitching hand and his status is day-to-day. Daniel Hudson came on to get the final two outs to secure the win.

The DBacks will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon as Nate Karns (9-9, 2.80) takes on Chris Tillman (13-5, 3.62). Karns has had some tough luck since coming over from Seattle on June 18. He was (7-2) with a 2.41 ERA when he came over from the Mariners, but has gone just (2-7) since joining the DBacks. He was a 3.40 ERA in that stretch and has gone at least 5 1/3 innings in every start. The rub is the DBacks offense has scored just 21 runs in his 11 starts, including eight on one of those starts They have been shut out or scored just one run in seven of his 11 starts as a DBack.
