Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks moved back into sole possession of first place in the National League West on Saturday night as they pounded the San Diego Padres 10-2, while the Giants lost to the Dodgers. Socrates Brito led the 14 hit attack, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI.
Rookie Mitch Haniger went 4 for 5 with two RBIs.
San Diego would get a run back in the second on a Jamile Weeks sacrifice fly.
In the third, Jean Segura lined a single back up the middle to score both Chris Herrmann and Socrates Brito to make it 6-1. Welington Castillo doubled home Mitch Haniger in the fourth to extend the lead.
In the fifth, Jean Segura stole second with Socrates Brito on third. The throw got away allowing Brito to come home and score and allowing Segura to move up to third. Ketel Marte then singled home Segura to make it 9-1.
Mitch Haniger singled to right in the seventh to score Socrates Brito. Brito singled to open the inning and stole second.
San Diego would get one back in the eighth as Brett Wallace unloaded on a Zack Godley pitch, landing it deep into the seats in right to make it 10-2.
The win clinched a playoff berth for Arizona with one game left. The DBacks can win the National League West with a win or Giants loss to the Dodgers. Arizona is now (14-2) in their last 16 games. The Mets, fighting for a Wild Card spot are also red-hot, going (13-3) over their last 16 games.
Arizona will send Rubby De La Rosa (11-5, 3.04) to the bump on Sunday afternoon to face Robbie Erlin (6-11, 3.55) in the regular season finale.
Notes: The Giants lost 6-2 to the Dodgers dropping them a game back of the DBacks in the West with one game left. The Cardinals lost again, this time 6-4 to Pittsburgh. The Cubs clinched the National League Central with an 8-2 victory over the Reds in Cincinnati. The Mets defeated the Phillies 2-0 and now control their Wild Card destiny on Sunday. A Mets win clinches a Wild Card spot. The Giants can still tie for the N.L. West with a win and DBacks loss, but a loss and St. Louis win will force a one game playoff for a spot in the National League Wild Card.
