    SANDS MAKES SOME MOVES!!

The Mariners had the day off to travel to Boston for upcoming 4 game series with Boston but new GM Ryne Sands was busy making some rosters moves before the team loaded the plane.

    THE TRADE
Backup IF Sam Haggerty and Minor league IF Jordon Cowan were dealt to the Atlanta Braves in Sands 1st trade of his career.

Coming back to Seattle is veteran Catcher Wellington Castillo. With current starter Tom Murphy hitting just .137 with 1 HR and 2 RBI in 51 AB's and backup Luis Torrens hitting .154 in 13 AB's, it was time for the M's to make a move.

The 33 yr old Castillo a career .254 hitter posted his best season in 2017 with Baltimore hitting .282 with 20 HR and 53 RBI. Castillo is on a 1 year deal worth 950K after sitting out the 2020 season. Castillo made his MLB debut back in 2010 with the Chicago Cubs where he spent his first 5 seasons.

    CALLUPS

With Haggerty gone, the M's called up SS/2B Donnie Walton. Walton made his debut for the M's back in 2019 logging 16 AB's hitting .187. He then posted a .154 average in 13 AB's in 2020. The M's will hope his hot bat will travel with him from Tacoma (hitting .375 with team leading 9 RBI) as current starting SS JP Crawford is hitting just .235 in 51 AB's.

OF Taylor Trammell also is joining the team. Trammell is expected to provide the M's with some speed off the bench as well as play the role of the #4 OF with Jake Fraley struggling (.250 in 16 AB's). OF Braden Bishop was sent down to AAA to make room for Trammell on the roster. Like Walton, Trammell has been destroying AAA pitchers hitting .452 this season and was leading the Rainer's in SB's with 5

To make room for Castillo and carry 3 catchers on the MLB roster, RP Drew Steckenrider was optioned to Tacoma. Steckenrider had pitched 5 IP giving up 3 runs (5.40 ERA) giving up 6 hits and 4 walks well striking out 6.

Steckenrider's best season came in 2018 when he appeared in 71 games for Miami going 4-4 with 5 saves in 64.2 IP posting a 3.90 ERA.

Appreciate you checking in. Yeah to be honest wasn't lot of options in Free Agency with the newest roster update when I started up. Braun has surprised me so far, especially his speed. I know early in his career he was a 30/30 guy but he doesn't really have great speed now and his aggressiveness is pretty low as well, yet not only does he lead the team in HR's he is also leading it in SB's Must be something in the Seattle water, or maybe he brought a stash of something with him.

          M'S/SANDS LOOKING TO ADD MORE

With the current struggles by the Seattle Mariners bat's, GM Ryne Sands is continuing to look to shake things up as he looks at Free Agency for more help. So far 1B/DH Ryan Braun has been one of the M's best hitters and now Sands might be looking to add another former All-Star to the mix.

35 yr old OF Yoenis Cespedes is no longer much of a defensive option in LF, but Cespedes could potentially fit in the M's lineup at DH with current DH Ty France moving into a super utility role playing at 1B/2B/3B and even the OF similar to what current 2B Dylan Moore did in 2019.

Mariner fans are familiar with Cespedes who started his career in Oakland back in 2012, where he spent his first 2 seasons averaging over 20 HR's and 80 RBI's before being dealt to Boston where he played for 1 season before being dealt to Detroit in December of 2014.

During his season with the Tigers Yoenis won a Gold Glove playing 99 games in LF for Detroit well also hitting .293 with 18 HR's and 61 RBI's

Detroit then traded him to the New York Mets where in 2016 he had his best season of his career hitting .280 with 31 HR's and 86 RBI.

Cespedes missed the entire 2019 season after breaking his ankle well working on his ranch and then only appeared in 34 AB's before opting out of the 2020 season due to Covid.

Reports are Cespedes will most likely sign a 1 year deal and will report to AAA Tacoma for the remainder of the month joining the M's most likely May 1st.

              M'S FALL UNDER .500

The Seattle Mariners ended April on a sour note. After playing .500 ball for most of the month, the M's drop 3 out of 4 to the Astros falling to (12-14) 2 games back of the AL West leading Angels.

              GAME 1

Houston jumped out to a early 5-0 lead chasing SP Justus Sheffield from the game after just 1 1/3 IP pitched as he gives up 5 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks.

LHP N. Margevicius however would come in and pitch well in relief going 4 2/3 IP giving up just 4 hits and 0 runs well striking out 2, giving the bats a chance to come wake up.

The M's bats did just that as they scoring 7 runs in the 7th including 4 runs off SP Z. Greinke.

It was a team effort as only CF K. Lewis and DH Ty France went hitless on the day.

Kyle Seager continues his strong April going 2/4 driving in 2 runs well also scoring 2.

Catcher W. Castillo get's his first hit as a Mariner driving in 2 runs, and SS JP Crawford adds a 2 run RBI Double.

Margevicicus picked up the "W" well K. Giles pitched the 9th picking up his 5th save of the season.

              GAME 2

Seattle took the 1-0 lead in the 2nd but Houston scores 2 in the bottom of the 6th and never looks back as the Astro Bullpen pitches 3 scoreless innings as SP Lance McCullers Jr picks up his 3rd win of the season pitching 6 IP giving up 1 run on 7 hits well striking out 5.

              Y. Kikuchi pitched well in the loss giving up 2 runs on 7 hits in 6 IP well striking out 3.

At the plate Ryan Braun finished 2/4 including a double well both M. Haniger and Dylan Moore also added doubles on their only hits of the day.

              GAME 3

Again Seattle took a 2-0 lead in the Top of the 4th but the Astros retook the lead 3-2 scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th.

At the plate the M's managed just 5 hits, with no player recording more then 1.

On the mound SP Justin Dunn drops to (1-4) on the season has he goes 5 IP giving up 3 runs on 6 hits well walking 4 and striking out 3.

RP N. Maregivicus makes a strong case for replacing Dunn in the rotation as he pitches the final 3 IP giving up just 1 hit well striking out 1.

              GAME 4

Houston took the 1-0 lead in the 1st as DH Yordon Alvarez goes deep, the Astros then added 3 in the 7th as both 2B Aledmys Diaz (2 run) and SS Carlos Correa (solo) go deep. Seattle would add run in the 8th falling (4-1) for the final.

SP Marco Gonzales falls to (2-2) on the season as he gives up all 4 runs on 6 hits in 6 1/3 IP well striking out 4.

At the plate backup IF Donnie Walton continues to swing a hot bat making a case for a starting job as he goes 3/5 raising his avg to .400 since joining the team. Walton also scored the only run as Kyle Seager drives him in with a RBI single.

              UP NEXT

(12-14) Seattle will close out the month of April with Game 1 of a 3 game series with the (14-12) Angels.

James Paxton will face off against Dylan Bundy in Game 1.
Justus Sheffield will take on Andrew Heaney in Game 2
Yusei Kikuchi square off against Griffin Canning in Game 3.

                APRIL LEAVES LOTS OF ???

                CATCHER

With both starter Tom Murphy (.137 1 HR 2 RBI in 51 AB's) and backup Luis Torrens (.174 23 AB's) the M's acquired veteran Wellington Castillo. However Castillo has seen his own struggles at the plate hitting just .100 with 1 HR and 3 RBI in his first 6 games (20 AB's).

Cal Raleigh currently has 4 HR and 9 RBI in Tacoma but is also just hitting .222 in 63 AB's.

Brian O'Keefe currently appears to be the best offensive option hitting .300 in 40 AB's with 1 HR and 5 RBI.

                1B

With Evan White still on the DL, Free Agent Ryan Braun has logged all the AB's in April finishing the month hitting .263 in 95 AB's, with 5 HR 13 RBI and 5 SB's

                2B

Super sub, Dylan Moore found a home to start the season at 2B, but Moore has hit just .197 in 71 AB's with 1 HR and 7 RBI and 5 SB's. Moving forward current DH Ty France could see more time at 2B, as current AAA 2B Shed Long Jr just hit the 10 day DL not being a option

                SS

JP Crawford is hitting just .192 with 8 RBI in 78 AB's, as he looks to give away to Donnie Walton who has 6 hits in just 19 AB's (.316) since joining the M's last week.

M fan's also could get a look soon at 18 yr old Noelvi Marte. Marte started the season in Tacoma this season and so far is hitting .290 in 69 AB's with 2 HR and 5 RBI

                3B

Kyle Seager has been the M's most consistent hitter in April hitting .264 with 3 HR and 9 RBI in 91 AB's.

Currently 21 yr old Joe Rizzo is manning the hot corner in Tacoma and is hitting .240 with 1 HR and 5 RBI in 50 AB's.

                DH

Ty France has spent the bulk of his 98 AB's at DH this season hitting just .214 with 4 HR and 14 RBI. France however appears ready to move to the field as he will see time as a super sub similar to the role of Dylan Moore last season, seeing action at 2B/3B/1B and in the OF.

Recently F.A. signing Yoenis Cespedes appears ready to join the M's. So far Cespedes has hit .261 with 2 HR and 2 RBI in his first 23 AB's in Tacoma.

                THE OF

Jose Marmolejos started out cold but has heated up as of late and is how hitting .233 in 73 AB's with 5 HR and 9 RBI.

Taylor Trammell smoked AAA pitching but so far has hit just .167 in his first 12 AB's with the M's.

Kyle Lewis has struggled after a Rookie of the Year season. Lewis is hitting just .226 with 2 HR and 8 RBI in 84 AB's.

Jake Fraley hasn't done much either hitting just .167 in 24 AB's.

Jarred Kelenic looked like he was playing for a callup sooner then later, but a Torn Groin has the M's Top Prospect on the 60 day DL with the ability to come off late June. Kelenic was hitting .273 with 1 HR and 8 RBI in 44 AB's at the time of the injury.

Braden Bishop hit just .182 in 22 AB's with the M's to start the year, and so far he hasn't faired so well in AAA either hitting .250 in 32 AB's.

Dom T-Williams has moved up from AA and so far in 25 AB's in Tacoma, Williams is hitting .280 with 5 RBI.

Mitch Haniger currently leads the M's with 6 HR's well driving in 9 runs but he is hitting just .245 in 98 AB's.

Future star Julio Rodriguez isn't hitting AAA pitching so great either though as J-Rod has a .231 BA in 65 AB's with 3 HR and 8 RBI.

Offense seems like it's up and down, though Braun has given you a decent boost since joining. The Kelenic injury is brutal because that's a foundational piece to build around, and it's hard to have someone with his kind of potential miss time.

Thanks for checking in. Braun has been a solid addition, hoping Cespedes gives us a spark too, now that I can't bring up Kelenic. Hopefully he will be ready to go for August/September and give me a a chance to make sure he is the real deal for LF moving forward.

For sure. I mean it is a fantasy world, so I am not going to lie, I was hoping they would be better then they have been. Giles has been a solid closer so far minus his 1st outing, hopefully he ends up being a option IRL. Dunn has been struggling enough he is going to need to go down to AAA and see if we can figure it out. Now I just got to figure out if I have a option at AAA or if Sands is going to need to try and get lucky with Free Agency again.

                          APRIL RECAP CONTINUED

The Seattle Mariners and 12-14 record and the Tacoma Rainer's (13-7) record actually can be contributed to pitching as neither team would actually have as many wins if he wasn't for the the arms of the pitchers, cause neither team is exactly providing explosive firepower at the plate.

                          THE ROTATION

Marco Gonzales has shown he can be counted on as a top of the rotation guy posting a ERA of 2.55 and a WHIP of 0.76 in 42.1 IP well striking out 27 on his way to a 2-2 record

James Paxton has shown the ability to throw strikes leading the team in K's with 31 in 35 IP but a 4.63 ERA has him 1-3 on the season.

Yusei Kikuchi has pitched better then his 1-1 record shows posting 3.14 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 28.2 IP

Justus Sheffield's season has been a little bit of a roller coaster, but the young lefty is showing promise going 2-2 in 5 starts posting a 4.50 ERA in 24 IP

Justin Dunn however has had a rough month. The 25 yr old Right hander is just 1-4 in his 5 starts posting a ERA of 8.59 and has given up 8 HR's in 22 IP.
