For sure.. Braun and Cespedes signings as well as the Hernandez signing has been huge. I think even without the Bryant trade we would be doing pretty well.

I got 3 series left and they are huge. Tied with the Astro's for 1st, only 1 game up from the A's. Winning the AL West is my only hope. 80 wins so far and I am still 7 back of the Whitesox in the Wildcard and 5 games behind the Blue Jays and Red Sox.

Crazy to have 4 out of the 5 teams in my division playing above .500 ball and the Rangers are the worst team in the AL and only 3 wins better then Pittsburgh

      M'S TIE ASTRO'S FOR 1ST PLACE!!!

Could Seattle make it to the post-season for the first time in 20 years. With 9 games left to play (6 vs the Angels and 3 vs the A's) the Mariners are in the drivers seat with the post season destiny tied to adding more "W's" the rest of the way out.

At 80-73, if the M's manage to win out they will tie their record from 2018 but 2 year's ago that was only good enough for 3rd in the AL West, as Houston went on to win 103 games that year and Oakland won 97.

Even if the M's don't manage to pull off a playoff spot, fan's have to be excited for what the future holds. GM Ryan Sands has traded for Kris Bryant and signed him to a 7 year extension giving the M's MVP caliber star to help lead a very young roster. The M's are also in the perfect position to also go out and sign another bigtime F.A. in the Middle Infield as well as add a potential bigtime SP at the top of the rotation.

Here is a look at the past 7 games.

      @ KANSAS CITY

The Royals won Game 1 with a (2-1) victory despite the "King" going 7 IP giving up just 2 runs on 7 hits well striking out 5.

Seattle bounced back to win Game 2 (7-6) and Game 3 (6-3).

      Y. Cespedes and T. France both drove in 3 runs each in Game 2, well Ryan Bruan went 4/5 at the plate. Marco Gonzales won his 10th of the year (10-10) going 6 IP giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits well striking out 6.

      K. Giles pitched the 9th for his 38th save of the year.

In Game 3, Braun went deep going 2/4 driving in 2. T. Trammell got the start in CF and went 2/3 driving in 3 runs.

      K. Graveman won his 12th of the year going 7 IP giving up 3 runs on 8 hits. Giles pitched the 9th for his 39th save.

      @ OAKLAND

The M's won Game 1 (4-2) and Game 2 (8-7) but fell in Game 3 (7-3) and Game 4 (10-6) to split the series with the A's, but they will get another 3 chances next week as they look to put some room between them as they battle for the AL West Crown.

In Game 1, Kris Bryant went deep driving in 3 runs. Sheffield went 5 2/3 IP giving up just 2 runs but got the no-decision as W. Mills got the win in relief. K. Giles pitched the 9th for his 40th save of the year.

In Game 2, the M's won in the 15th Inning. Y. Cespedes was the hero at the plate getting 3 doubles well driving in 4 runs. Paxton pitched 7 IP giving up 5 runs getting the no decision. Giles blew the save opportunity giving up a game tying run in the 14th but ends up with the "W" instead as Doolittle pitched the 15th for his 11th save of the year.

In Game 3 Seattle led 3-0 in the 3rd but the A's score 2 in the bottom of the 4th and then tack on 4 more in the 7th. Felix took the loss and is now 9-6 as he gives up all 7 runs on 6 1/3 IP on 6 hits and 9 walks!!

Bryant wen 3/4 at the plate raising his Avg to .286 on the year.

In Game 4, Seattle led 6-5, but Giles gave up the game tying run in the bottom of the 9th. Giles then stayed in the game for the 10th and gave up 2 hits and walked the bases loaded before giving up the "Grand Slam" to Canha, for the blown save and his 4th loss of the year.

Re: Rebuilding the Kingdom-A Seattle Mariners 2021

M'S ADVANCE WILL FACE FAMILAR FOE IN ROUND 2!!!

It's been 20 years, but for Seattle fan's the hatred for the New York Yankees is the same in 2021 as it was in 2001.

After winning the AL West in the final week of the regular season, Seattle managed to take the Best of 5 games vs the Twins to Advance to the AL Championships as they will take on the New York Yankees for a chance to play in the World Series.

Toronto beat Chicago in the 1 game play in series and New York made quick work of their AL East rivals beating the Blue Jays 3-0 to Advance.

In fact the Seattle/Minnesota series was the only matchup where both teams actually won games and forced a full 5 game series.

On the NL side Atlanta beat San Diego in the NL Wildcard to advance to face the L.A. Dodgers but the Dodgers made quick work of the Braves beating them 3-0 as well.

The New York Mets also brought out the brooms in their series with St Louis beating the Cardinals 3-0 as well.

So now we have West Coast vs East Coast. Could we see a New York vs New York World Series? Or will it be Seattle vs L.A. Or will Seattle face off against a pair of former Mariners in Taijuan Walker and Edwin Diaz with Seattle taking on the Mets?

Before we get to the Championships, lets look back at the 5 game series with the Twins.

          GAME 1

The Twins took Game 1 with a 4-2 victory as they record 13 hits including a 3 run HR by Sano.

          K. Graveman got the start after winning a team high 14 games in the regular season, but Graveman went just 5 IP giving up all 4 runs on 9 hits (7.20 ERA). Nick Margevicius pitched the final 3 IP of relief giving up 4 hits as Seattle saves the bullpen arms in the opening game loss.

At the plate, Seattle managed 2 runs on 7 hits with both runs coming off a 2-run HR by Kris Bryant in the Top of the 9th. Taylor Trammel followed Bryant's shot with a base hit but with 2 outs, Seattle sent Y. Cespedes to the plate to pinch hit for T. Wolters with a chance to possibly tie the game, but Cespedes struck out for the final out.

          GAME 2

Seattle held the Minnesota to just 4 hits in their 4-0 victory.

Marco Gonzales went 7 IP giving up 2 hits well striking out 5 in the win. Wyatt Mills pitched the final 2 IP of relief.

At the plate it was Kris Bryant once again coming up big with another 2 run HR. Taylor Trammell started in LF again and went 2/4 as he is now 4/8 in the first 2 games.

          GAME 3

The Twins bats broke out for 10 hits and 5 runs in the (5-2) victory as Sano hits his 2nd and 3rd HR of the series driving in 4 runs well going 3/4 at the plate.

Kris Bryant again led the M's at the plate driving in both runs with a 2-run double. Ryan Braun added a 3/4 day at the plate including a Triple.

On the Mound, "King" Felix went just 6 IP giving up 3 runs on 6 hits well walking 2 and striking out 3.

Domingo Tapia was hit hard giving up a 2 run HR by Sano well Jordan Hicks pitched the final 2 IP striking out 2.

          GAME 4

Seattle ties the series (2-2) with a 3-1 victory, holding the Twins to just 3 hits on the day well recording 11 of their own.

Bryant hit his 3rd HR of the series well Troy Wolters drives in the winning run with a RBI double in the 4th as he finishes the day 3/3 at the plate.

James Paxton picks up the "W" going 7 IP giving up 1 run on 3 hits and striking out 6.

Sean Doolittle pitched a scoreless 8th well K. Giles pitched the 9th striking out 2 for the save.

          GAME 5

Seattle took a 2-0 lead in the 1st, Minnesota tied it 2-2 in the bottom of the 2nd. The M's then took the lead in the 5th and scored every inning after as they go on to win the game with a 9-3 victory.

Bryant hit his 4th HR in 5 games driving in 3 runs. Dylan Moore added a 2 run shot as well. Evan White got the start at 1B and went 1/4 with a 2 run double.

K Graveman picked up the win going 6 IP giving up 3 runs on 7 hits well striking out 3.

          SERIES NOTES

Kyle Seager after hitting .292 with 22 HR and 82 RBI during the regular season is just 1/15 so far in the playoffs.

Jared Kelenic was the MVP of the final series against the Angels hitting 3 HR's but is is 0/15 so far in the playoffs.

Yoenis Cespedes led the M's with a .333 BA in the regular season but is just 1/9 in the playoffs.

Ryan Braun is 7/19 (.368) so far but has yet to drive in a run after leading the team with 101 RBI in the regular season.

Kris Bryant hit 22 HR's during the regular season but hit just 6 after coming over from Chicago. However in the playoffs Bryant has 4 HR's and has a team high 11 RBI.

With Kelenic and Cespedes struggling, Taylor Trammel has recorded 14 AB's and got 7 hits as he is hitting .500 during the playoffs

SEATTLE FALLS SHORT IN WORLD SERIES BID!!

It took 7 games but the New York Yankees have done it again, defeating the Marnier in the AL Championships, as Seattle fan's are left to wait another year before their team will have a chance to play in the Franchises first ever World Series.

The Series won't be a New York vs New York bout for the World title but will still feature 2 teams that have called New York home, as the Yankees take on the Dodgers for the 13th time in World Series History with the last meeting dating back to 1981 when Mariner GM Ryan Sands was just 5 year old.

Here is a look the the 7 games AL Championship Series.

Both teams combined for 27 hits in the game. Seattle scored 2 runs on the Top of the 8th to take a 6-5 lead, but New York tied in in the bottom of the 8th off K. Middleton.

Wyatt Mills would take over for Middleton finishing the 8th and pitching a scoreless 9th before giving way to former Yankee Justus Sheffield who would pitch 5 scoreless IP of relief after going to the Bullpen for the playoffs Sheffield would give up just 3 hits over 5 IP getting the "W" well Ken Giles pitched the 15th for just his 2nd save of the post season after recording 43 in the regular season.

              OFF-SEASON QUESTIONS

So close but no cigar. The celebration was cut short by 1 game. 1 more win on a 87 game win season and the Mariners would've been in the World Series for the first time in Franchise history.

GM Ryan Sands was named General Manager of the Year after making a series of trades that brought in superstar Kris Bryant and bullpen arms like Sean Doolittle, Jordan Hicks, and more. Sands also had 2 huge Free Agent signings in 1B/DH Ryan Braun and OF/DH Yoenis Cespedes as well as bringing back "King" Felix Hernandez.

But now the questions start. What moves will Sands make in the off-season to get the M's back to the post season and give them another shot at a World title opportunity.

              BRAUN/CESPEDES

Both players are at the end of the careers. Braun will be 38 next year. Well he hit .267 with 31 HR and 101 RB making the All-Star game during the regular season. He was just 9/49 in the playoff without a HR or RBI.

Cespedes finished the regular hitting .316 with 23 HR and 85 RBI and actually played a solid LF committing just 3 errors, but at 35, he too is getting past his prime of playing everyday in the field. With Trammell taking most of the AB's in the playoffs leaving Cespedes just 1/16 (.062), and a OF that will have Kyle Lewis returning and Julio Rodriquez in AAA who hit 26 HR's, it's safe to say Cespedes will be playing elsewhere in 2022.

              SEAGER

With the addition of Kris Bryant who can play 3B as well as Ty France, Mariner fan's and Sands have to wonder will Kris Seager be back. Like Braun and Cespedes, Seager's age showed in the playoffs. At 33 he too only probably has 3-4 more years in him and the question is should they be in Seattle.

Seager hit a career high .297 this season (his career avg is just .257) well hitting 22 HR's with 82 RBI's, posting a 2.1 WAR matching his 2017 output.

However Seager want's some big money coming off a season in which he was the highest paid player on the team at 19 million. Odd's are it will probably take 7-10 million per season over 4-5 years to get him to stay.

              2B/SS

Ty France (.253 22 HR 65 RBI) Dylan Moore (.245 12 HR RBI, 19 SB's) and Donavan Walton (.268/144 AB's) are capable of sharing 2B/SS duties next season and providing some flexibility on the bench with Moore capable of playing pretty much everywhere on the field and France lining up at 3B/1B and DH. However with some of the best players in FA available at both spots the question remains, will Sands try and land a Superstar to play along side Bryant? Or will Sands role with Leonardo Rivas (.273 in 88 AB's) who was a major piece in the Crawford trade. Rivas is just 22 yrs old. Or will he turn to 18 turning 19 Noeivi Marte who played well in AAA Tacoma last season.

              OF

Kyle Lewis logged just 223 AB's last season hitting .269 with 8 HR and 30 RBI #'s similar to his 2020 season when he was named AL ROY. Lewis is the M"s CF next year if healthy.

Mitch Haniger hit .291 with 29 HR and 80 RBI last year earning a contract extension that will see him with the M's till the age of 35 (2026). Haniger will most likely start the year in RF but could see action at DH and 1B if Julio Rodriguez makes his debut.

Taylor Trammell (.241 7 HR 30 RBI, 17 SB's) and Jared Kelenic (.254 5 HR 21 RBI 12 SB's in 144 AB's) will most likely split time in LF, but both players are left handed leaving some to wonder if Trammell could be traded opening the door for Kelenic to play everyday or platoon with someone who hits for the right side.

24 yr old Dom T-Williams and 28 yr old Dillion Thomas both hit well in the minors last season, Williams will most likely get snagged by another team in the Rule 5 draft well Thomas (left handed) could be trade bait stuck behind more highly rated players.

              1B

Bryant and Braun stepped in and played 1B with Evan White spending the bulk of the season on the DL. However when White was healthy he proved he can rake, hitting .278 with 5 HR and 12 RBI in 144 AB's. With France and Moore also capable to fill in as well as the possibility of seeing Mitch Haniger make his way into the IF, odds are Sands will not add another 1B option.

              C

The M's went into last season with Tom Murphey and Luis Torrens at Catcher, and now neither is with the team. Veteran Wellington Castillo was added and played well at times but was left off the post-season roster. Then Sands brought in former Rockie Troy Wolters as well as former 1st Round Mariner Draft pick Alex Jackson.

Wolters finished the regular season hitting .237 with just 3 HR and 26 RBI in 219 AB's, but he did go 8/29 (.276) in the playoffs. However Wolters is a expected to want 5.-6 million next season and that could be to much for what most likely will be a platoon type role, as Seattle looks to turn to 23 yr old Cal Raleigh.

Raleigh dominated AAA pitching and got the callup in September but went just 8/39 (.205). He was still left on the playoff roster with Jackson being left off but went just 2/13 (.154).

Jackson could get a extended look this spring, but in 206 AB's this season, Jackson hit just .209 with 1 HR and 22 RBI.

              ROTATION

Kendall Graveman (14 wins, 3.65 ERA), Marco Gonzales (11 wins 4.33 ERA), Justus Sheffield (12 wins 5.06 ERA) are probably a lock for 3 spots in the rotation.

22 yr old Logan Gilbert (12 wins in AAA) should join them. Now the question is what about the last spot?

James "Big Maple" Paxton pitched well winning 12 games and posting a 3.66 ERA in 206 IP, but he is 32 and and looking for a 5-6 year deal probably making 12-15 million per season. His 2 wins and .90 ERA in the playoffs probably helped his cause for even more money. Question is does Sands want to pay and make him the "Ace" of the staff. Or does Seattle look at adding a differed high price SP?

"King" Felix Hernandez has a team option for 2022 at 4 million for the season, and coming off 10 wins and a 3.41 ERA, you would think he should be back. But at 34, his age started to show as he too struggled in the playoff going 0-3 and posting a 5.06 ERA.

Sands also has more options in AAA with 26 yr old Chris Flexen, 21 yr old Emerson Hancock, 22 yr old George Kirby, 22 yr old Brandon Willamson all possible 5th starters as well as Japan's Yusei Kikuchi who went 5-8 with a 4.48 ERA before being demoted to AAA. Kikuch however is a restricted FA and could price his way out of Seattle.

              RP/CP

Ken Giles has 1 more year on his contract and proved his past injuries are behind him posting 43/47 saves with a 2.79 ERA. He will be the CP in 2022, but with 21 yr old Andres Munoz posting 33 saves in AAA, odds are Giles could be traded in 2022 if the M's are not in the playoff race.

24 yr old Jordan Hicks is another option. Hicks 4.29 ERA in 2021 wasn't great but he did post 21 holds and went 4-2 in 51 IP of work. Hicks is signed through 2025 at 4.4 million per year making him a less expensive choice over signing Giles to a high dollar deal.

Veteran Sean Doolittle will be 35 next year, but the Lefty still shows he has some gas left in the tank posting 13 saves with a 2.86 ERA in 56 IP of work. He is signed through 2024 and should snag a spot in the bullpen as well as give Sands another late inning option.

Another dark horse candidate for the CP role or a 8th IP role is former Angel Kenyon Middleton. Middleton recorded 23 Holds in 43 IP of work this season with 3 saves, but he also had a 4.19 and at 1.5 million per season he could be trade bait as the M's look to save money with cheaper options

Seattle has ton's of LHP options to join Doolittle. 24 yr old Darwinzon Hernandez (Red Sox trade), Tanner Scott (Baltimore trade) and Evan Steele (Royals trade) as well as Nick Margevicus, Aaaron Fletcher and Anthony Misiewicz.

Hernandez (8.44 ERA, 26 IP) and Scott (8.28 ERA 25 ERA) both struggled and ended up in AAA and off the playoff roster. Both could end up being traded.

Margevicus pitched great (2.06 ERA 56 IP) during the regular season and pitched 4 IP in the playoffs. He is signed at 1 million per season through 2024 and should be a lock for a playoff spot.

Fletcher and Steele are both just 23 and will likely be in Tacoma for another year, but both could make the 40 man roster as options to come up.

Misiewicz is a FA and after a 9.28 ERA in 10 IP he most likely wont' be retained unless he doesn't want big money.

Former NY Met/Boston Red Sox, Domingo Tapia pitched well win 2021 posting a 2.72 ERA with a 8-2 record in 72 IP. He was rewarded with a contract extension and should be one of the main options as a RHP in the 5th-8th IP

Casey Sadler (3.47 ERA in 80 IP) was another solid option from the right side, but a 1-5 record left him off the playoff roster. He however will look to battle for a spot on next year's roster with Middleton.

                  A NEW CHAPTER!!

Coming away just 1 game short of their goal of playing in the World Series, GM Ryan Sands started to write a new chapter for 2022 with a huge addition to the "Story".

Sands went big landing former All-Star and Colorado Rockie's Trevor Story to a 5 year contract. Story will lineup every day next to Kris Bryant as the Dynamic Duo look to lead the M' for the next half a decade.

                  Sands
"We are super excited for Trevor to be coming to Seattle. We really fill like our middle of the lineup is covered. He can handle the cleanup role or bat # ahead of Kris. We also believe this is going to benefit our bench as well allowing us to move Dylan Moore back to a super sub type role and allow Ty France a chance to really dig in at 2B or even 1B if Evan White can't stay healthy"

With Story landing in Seattle, other mega star SS's resigned with their original teams, as Corey Seager signs a 3 year deal with the Dodgers and Javier Baez resigns with Chicago for 4 years.

Story wasn't the only big thing happening in Seattle though, as Sands also lands former Detroit Tiger/Houston Astro SP Justin Verlander on 2 year deal worth 17.5 millon.

                  Sands
"We are excited to add Justin to the rotation. We feel he can fill that #1 role for us allow Marco to slide to #2 and Graveman to #3. It also allows Logan Gilbert a couple seasons to pitch at the bottom of our rotation and allows us to keep guy's like George Kirby, Emerson Hancock and Brandon Willamson in AAA for another year"

                    WINTER MEETING NEWS

                    FREE AGENTS

With Trevor Story headed to Seattle, some of the other super star SS Free Agents were quick to sign as well.

Javier Baez resigned with the Chicago Cubs for 4 years joining CP Craig Kimbell, Anthony Rizzo and Joc Pederson.

Corey Seager resigned with the Dodgers. L.A. let Chris Taylor walk as the former Mariner rejoins the AL West with the Oakland A's. However Seager will have a new teammate in the middle of the infield as L.A. outbids Houston in attemps to keep SS Carlos Correa as he signs a 5 year 100 million dollar deal with the Dodgers. At this point Seager could slide over to 3B or maybe Correa ends up at 2B.

Speaking of Seager's.. Kyle Seager has gone shopping for a ring as he joins the New York Yankees on a 3 year deal. The Yankees already have 2 players capable of playing 3B both both hit from the right side, so maybe Seager is happy with a platoon role if it means finally getting a ring?

Houston losing out on Correa settled for ex Cubs/National Starlin Castro to fill the 2B/SS spot in their lineup.

New York has a new slugging 1B as they sign Trey Mancini to a 2 year deal worth 10 million.

                    RULE 5 DRAFT

Several teams signed multiple players in the Rule 5 draft this year, including a team high 4 by Detroit. Baltimore and Texas both picked 3 players well several teams picked 2.

Detroit picked Astro OF prospect Jordan Brewer and Miami Marlins OF Kameron Misner. as well as Catcher Tres Barrera from the Nationals and veteran RP Jesse Biddle from the Braves.

Baltimore snagged CF Jameson Hannah from the Rockies, CP Juan Chavez from the Dodgers and SS Rick Thomas from the Red Sox's.

Texas went after SP Chance Adams from the Royals, 3B Scott Spindler from the Yankees and OF Donovan Casey from the Dodgers.

Miami snagged ex Mariner/Mets Mallex Smith for their OF as well as Cubs SS Sergio Alcantara.

                      M'S LOSE 1 ADD 2

Seattle signed Kris Bryant to a 7 year deal and traded for young 3B Jacob Gonzales (son of Luis Gonzales) last year opening up the door for 3B Jake Scheiner (#28 prospect) to be exposed to the Rule 5 Draft, and Arizona jumped at the chance. A 4th round pick by the Phillies in 2017, Scheiner hit well in AAA Tacoma last season and was viewed as a potential replacement for Seager had Bryant not come over.

With 3 roster spots on the 40 man roster and a couple on the 28 man roster, Seattle added 2 players via the draft.

1B/C KJ Harrison played his college baseball at Oregon State before being drafted in the 3rd round by Milwaukee. He was then dealt by the Brewers to Washington in the Gio Gonzales trade. At 24 yrs old he is 1 year younger then Evan White.

                      Sands
"We are excited about KJ. We believe he can give us some depth behind Evan, play some DH and fill the role as a #3 Catcher as well. He has above avg power and is capable of hitting 20+ HR as well as hit for a decent BA"

Seattle also made a couple of trades this past week dealing RP Kenyon Middleton to Baltimore opening up the the door for another bullpen arm at the MLB level, so in the 3rd Round Seattle jumped at the chance to sign RHP RP Seranthony Dominguez from the Phillies. Dominguez appeared in 58 games for the Phillies in 2018 posting a 2-5 record well recording 16/20 saves and a 2.95 ERA in 58 IP. In 2019 he pitched 24 IP posting a 3-0 record with a 4.01 ERA before going through a Tommy John procedure. Dominguez didn't pitch in 2020 or 2021 opening the door for Philly to move on from keeping him on the 40 man roster.

                      Sands
"We really like Seranthony's arm alot. He can still bring it 100 mph on his fastball and has a solid slider and change. We believe he could be another option for us in the 8th and 9th IP especially if we choose to not sign Giles to a big pay raise next season."

                        M'S BRING BACK CRUZ!!!

Last season GM Ryan Sands struck gold signing Ryan Braun and Yoenis Cespedes to 1 year deals filling the DH role for the Mariners. Despite both being available, Sands went back to someone Mariner fan's are very familar with inking a 1 year 4 million dollar deal with 41 yr old Nelson Cruz.

Cruz is a homerun machine and will slot in at the #4 spot between Bryant and Story. In 4 seasons with the M's, Cruz averaged over 40 homeruns and 100 RBI's. He left signing a 2 year deal with the Twins and averaged 28 HR's for Minnesota including 23 last season well hitting .304.

                        Sands
"What we love about Nelson is even when he is hitting 30-40 HR's he is also hitting close to .300 including last season at the age of 40. We fill he will be a great addition to the team."

Sands wasn't done adding some veteran presence to the lineup as he adds veteran catcher Robinson Chirinos . Chirinos is very familiar with the AL West playing in both Houston and Texas. Last season with the Yankees Chirinios hit .279 with 13 HR and 49 RBI in a platoon role.

                        Sands
"We are excited to add Robinson to the club. We feel he will be a solid veteran presence and mentor for Cal Raleigh and can give us a another option against tough lefties off the bench. Traditionally he has hit lefties very well and most likely won't see much action against righties"
With Cruz and Chrinios signed, the Mariners now have 39 players on their 40 man roster filled....

                          SPRING TRAINING STORIES

With the kickoff of Spring Training, lets take a look at some of the biggest stories surrounding the AL West Champion Seattle Mariners as GM Ryan Sands looks to make the roster adjustments need to keep his team on top of the division and make another run to the AL Championship and potentially the franchises first World Series appearence.

Sands made a big splash in Free Agency signing SP Justin Verlander to a 2 year deal to be the team's #1. Verlander is very familiar with the AL West having spent the last 4 seasons in Houston including 2019 when he was 21-6 with a 2.58 ERA.

Another huge "Story" of the Off-Season was the signing of SS Trevor Story. In 2018 and 2019 Story hit 37 and 35 HR's well hitting over .290 posting over 20 SB's as well in each season. A career .272 hitter, Story had a slight down year in 2021 hitting .252 but did manage 28 HR's 79 RBI and 17 SB's. Expect Story to bound between the #2 hole and #5 this season as the every day SS.

With Kris Bryant taking over at 3B and Evan White potentially healthy at 1B, Seattle's only every position battle in the Infield as at 2B.

Ty France's .253 22 HR 65 RBI in 2021 gives him the front runner job, but don't count out Super Sub Dylan Moore. Moore logged 424 AB's last year playing all over the field but played the majority of his games at 2B and SS, hitting .245 with 12 HR 49 RBI and nabbed 19 SB's in 21 attempts.

Another Darkhorse candidate is Shed Long Jr.. Long started out in AAA last season then got hurt and missed most of the year before returning and getting a callup in September, hitting .269 in 52 AB's. With Long batting from the leftside and Moore and France both hitting from the rightside, Long could find a spot on the bench as a backup at 3B and the OF as well.

With France, Long and Moore battling it out for 2B and backup jobs, Middle Infielders, Wilbis Santiago, Leonardo Rivas (.273-88 AB's) and Donavan Walton (.268 2 HR 15 RB-142 AB'S) will be hard pressed to make the opening day roster and are most likely options to be traded at some point to shore up depth at other positiions.

Catcher is another spot to watch this spring. Gone is Tom Murphy, Luis Torrens, Wellington Castillo and Troy Wolters from last season. Enter prospect Cal Raleigh who dominated AAA last season but hit just .205 in 39 AB's in Sept. Raleigh will be given the first shot to be the every day catcher, but look for veteran Robinson Chirinos to take some AB's from against Lefties. Chrinois hit 17,18 and 17 HR's from 2017-2019 in the AL West well playing for Texas and Houston.

With Rule 5 Draft pick KJ Harrison capable of playing both 1B and C, it's doubtful that former 1st Round pick Alex Jackson will make the opening day roster, especially after hitting just .209 with 1 HR and 22 RBI in 206 AB's last season, but if Jackson can get hot this spring and Raleigh struggles we could see Jackson leapfrog him on the depth chart.

In the Outfield it appears that Jared Kelenic, Kyle Lewis and Mitch Haniger are lock to be starters with Taylor Trammell as the main reserve, with Moore also capable of logging innings in the OF. However 2 guy's to keep an eye on are Dom T-Williams, and Dillon Thomas. Both players spend the bulk of their year in AA Arkansas last year but both made the 40 man roster after not being exposed in the Rule 5 draft, surpassing Julio Rodriguez on the fast track at getting a shot in the majors.

                          Sands
"Julio will most likely grab our final spot on the 40 man roster and make the jump in September if he has a year in AAA like he did last yer, but both Thomas and Williams need a chance to showcase their skills and potentially give us some trade bait whether it's them or Trammell helping us bring in something we need to make us a World Series contender. Williams has the skills to bat at the top of the order well Thomas is more of a middle of the order type guy"

Well Verlander, Gonzales, Graveman have spots 1-3 locked in the rotation, LHP Justus Sheffield and RHP Logan Gilbert will battle for the 4th and 5th starter spots with former Minnesota Twin/Chicago Cubs Kohl Stewart, Chris Flexen, Edward Cabrera this spring.

Stewart and Flexen both have experience pitching out of the bullpen well Cabrera is just 22 yrs old and was acquired from Miami last season

With the long role position most likely filled by one of the 3 mentioned above, and Sean Doolittle, Jordan Hicks, Rule 5 pick Serathony Dominguez and Ken Giles a lock, look for Domingo Tapia and Wyatt Mills to battle it out for the last spot in the pen on the rightside and Tanner Scott and Nick Margevivus battle it out for the last spot from the leftside.

                            M'S HAVE A ROUGH SPRING

Coming off a AL West Championship and coming short 1 game from making the World Series, Seattle fan's have high hopes for 2022. GM Ryan Sands went out and added another mega star in SSTrevor Story , 2-time CY Young winner Justin Verlander and brought back Nelson Cruz to man the DH role for 2022.

However Seattle would open up the spring winning just 1 of their first 6 games and then finish the spring on a 6 game losing streak to finish 10-17 Overall.

Top pitching prospect Logan Gilbert was expected to challenge for a spot in the rotation, but Gilbert went 0-3 with a 8.05 ERA in 3 starts and instead was sent to AAA Tacoma to start the year.

Instead the #5 spot in the rotation will be held down by Chris Flexen. Flexen finished the spring pitching 20 IP, including 1 start posting a ERA of 1.80.

At the top of the rotation Justin Verlander (2-2 2.42 ERA) and Marco Gonzales (0-3, 2.33 ERA) looked solid despite not the best win totals. However #3 SP Kendal Graveman (1-2 6.97 ERA) and Justus Sheffield (1-2 4.64 ERA) didn't fair well though, leaving some to wonder will Sands look Free Agency and sign a veteran including Yusei Kikuchi who was 5-8 with a 4.42 ERA last year with the M's.

Ken Giles in the last year of his deal and is looking for a 4-5 year deal. Coming off 43 saves last season, Giles however didn't look so great this spring going 0-2 with just 3 saves well posting a 6.43 ERA in 7 IP of work.

2 potential CP that did look good though were Jordan Hicks (11.1 IP, 1-0 1.59 ERA) and Seranthony Dominguez (15.2 IP, 2.30 ERA)

Other RP's that signed were RHP Domingo Tapia (14.1 IP, 0.63 ERA) and LHP Nick Margevicius (10 IP, 1.80 ERA).

At the plate we saw several players perform well earning roster spots for Opening Day well others who were expected to make the roster instead will look to right the ship at AAA Tacoma.

Dom T-Williams earned a spot on the bench as a OF sub hitting .340 with 4 HR and 8 RBI well also snagging 3 SB's.. In fact his play could even push him into a starting role in LF as both Jared Kelenic (.206 3 HR 4 RBI 4 SB's) and Taylor Trammell (.100 BA 3/30) struggled.

Kelenic will get the Opening Day start, but Trammell is headed to AAA in hopes to find his grove.

Ty France (.232 2 HR 7 RBI) appears to be the every day 2B against LHP well Shed Long Jr (.361 1 HR 3 RBI) will play most likely against RHP.

Dylan Moore (.174 1 HR 4 RBI) and Donovan Walton (.222 1 HR 4 RBI) both struggled opening the door for Wilbis Santiago (.389 in 18 AB's) to push for a backup role pushing Walton to AAA

1B Evan White showed some power at the plate hitting 4 HR's in the spring but managed to hit just .239 in 67 AB's, opening up the door for Rule 5 Draft pick KJ Harrison (.276, 29 AB's) to most likely get some starts.

Cal Raleigh is considered to be the catcher of the future and not the present. Raleigh hit just .174 in 46 AB's and will head to AAA. Instead it will be former 1st Round pick Alex Jackson sticking on the roster along side veteran Robinson Chrinios.

Jackson logged 30 AB's this spring hitting .300 in 12 games, well Chrinios hit .242 with 1 HR in 33 AB's.

                              SHENTON HEADED TO THE RAYS

SS Austin Shenton grew up in Bellingham Washington and dreamed of being a Mariner one day. After playing his college baseball at FIU, Seattle drafted him in the 5th Round. Shenton rose of the rankings to #17 with the Mariners and was viewed as a potential SS or 3B of the fututre, but now with Kris Bryant and Trevor Story signed for the next 5-7 years, GM Ryan Sands made a move to use Shenton to upgrade a position that was viewed as a strength of the M's going into 2021.

As rosters started to form with the end of spring training, Seattle was in need a a AAA OF, who could potentially be on the 40 man roster and bat from the right side.

Seattle scouts found several players who fit the mold, but at the end of the day, Sands #1 target was Tampa Ray's OF Josh Lowe.. The 13 Overall pick of the 2016 draft climbed to #12 on the Ray's Top-30 board and even made the 40 man roster last season appearing in 34 games logging 118 AB's well hitting .314 with 4 HR and 14 RBI.

Also heading to Tampa in the deal is IF Cesar Izturis Jr. Son of former Dodgers SS Cesar Izturis, "Jr" signed with the Mariners as a International F.A. at the age of 16. Izturis can play SS like his dad as well as 2B and 3B and could very well make the Ray's roster by the end of the season (was rated a 67 with A potential).

M'S FALL TO TIGERS IN SEASON OPENER!!

Seattle's spring training pains followed them to the regular season as they drop 2 of 3 games in the opening season series in Detroit. The Mariners will return home for a 3 game series against Tampa Bay on Monday.

                                GAME 1 (LOST 12-7)

It was a pitching dual for the first 5 Innings as Justin Verlander took on his former team vs Tigers Ace Spencer Turnbull. Turnbull held the M's hitless through the first 5 IP, well Verlander gave up just 5 hits, but in the bottom of the 6th, Verlander fell apart giving up 4 of his 5 walks on the day and 9 runs over 2/3 IP including a pair of 2 run Homeruns.

Kohl Stewart came in and closed out the 6th but he too got hit hard as RF Mazara hit's a 3 run shot to give Detroit the 12-1 lead.

Seattle's bats would come alive in the 8th though as the M's load the bases for 1B Evan White who quickly clears them with a "Grand Slam" for his 1st HR of the season.

Seattle would score 6 runs into total for in the 8th, as Kyle Lewis adds a 2 run double..

Verlander would take the loss, posting a 14.29 ERA in 5 2/3 IP giving up a total of 11 hits and 5 walks well striking out 4.

Turnbull got the "W" going 7 IP giving up 1 run on 2 hits and 3 walks well striking out 6.

                                GAME 2 (WON 8-2)

Marco Gonzales pitched 6 strong IP giving up 2 runs on 6 hits well striking out 7. Stewart bounced back from a rough start to go 2 IP of relief giving up 3 hits well Seranthony Dominguez pitched the 9th in a no-save role.

At the plate, Seattle put 4 over the Fence as Kelenic, Story (2 run), Haniger (2 run) and France (3 run) all went deep on the day.

Haniger also added a double well Story also added a SB after walking in the 8th.

                                GAME 3 (LOST 7-4)

Seattle jumped out to the early 4-0 lead, but the Tigers responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to make it 4-2. then in the bottom of the 6th tied the game 4-4 before scoring 3 more in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead.

Kendall Graveman went 5 IP giving up 4 runs (3 earned0 on 7 hits and 5 walks well striking out 3.

Domingo Tapia who was lights out in the spring was hit hard giving up 3 runs on 4 hits in 1 1/3 IP of relief as he takes the loss.

At the plate, Dom T-Williams got the start in LF and went 2/5 on the day including a 2 run double. Trevor Story continues to hit well away from Coors field (.307) going 2/5 with 2 RBI.

                                OFF THE FIELD NEWS

GM Ryan Sands made another move this weekend as AAA Tacoma gets ready to kickoff their season next week. Sands still looking for OF depth signed former Chicago Cubs/N.Y. Mets OF Albert Almora JR. .

Almora logged just 10 games and 26 AB's for the Mets in 2021 hitting just .154 leading to his release.

In 2020 Almora was just 5/30 (.167) in his last season with the Cubs. But the former 6th Overall Pick in the 2012 draft, is capable of putting up some decent stats (.286 5 HR 41 RBI in 2018, and .236 12 HR 32 RBI in 2019) and is capable of playing all 3 OF spots. (just 7 career errors in 745 PO's)
