    Radford clinches Big South title
Kenny Thomas leads balanced effort in blowout victory.

Radford, VA - For the Radford Highlanders, tonight's victory served as proof that Jason Whitt was the right hire. In two years, he has taken the Highlanders from also-ran to the top of the Big South mountain and a legitimate shot at the school's second ever berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Tonight on Senior Night, using a makeshift lineup so that seniors Eric Hall and Martell McDuffy could play, the Highlanders continued their winning ways in a 82-59 blowout over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, a team that has been a thorn in the side of Coach Whitt.

"It's good to get a victory over those guys," Whitt said. "With it being Senior Night, it was already an emotional night, especially for our four seniors. It was great to see them all play well, especially Martell after his struggles coming back from injury. He's played really well these last couple games. Then you add us clinching the regular season title and cutting down the nets at home. It's just great."

Coach Whitt thought said that they would not get caught looking ahead.

"We have to take it one game at a time, and I know that is a hokey sport cliche," Whitt said. "But we know what's ahead of us. We clinched at minimum an automatic bid into the NIT, which is nice and all. But now the goal is switching to Charleston Southern Saturday night and then the Big South tournament, where everyone will be gunning for us. Last year, we made a surprise run and came a game away from the Big Dance. Our goal is to hear our name on Selection Sunday."

Radford used a balanced attack to put away the Chanticleers, with three players finishing in double-figures, led by Kenny Thomas with 14. The Highlanders jumped out to a 19-8 lead and never looked back.

Coach Whitt's Take: Our work on the glass tonight allowed us to get the victory tonight. Charleston Southern played us tough, but we were able to pull away in the second half behind the strong play of Kenny Thomas and Jamar Jenkins. It'll be awesome hosting the Big South Tournament this year...as long as we don't pull a Winthrop and lose in the first round.

I love how realistic this dynasty is! Good luck with Radford, hopefully you can continue to dominate your conference.

Thanks for reading. If you can find 2k8, by all means, buy it. It's starting to show its age some in the graphic department, but with the right sliders, it plays a very good game of basketball.

                Survive and Advance
Radford holds off second half run by Liberty in 69-52 victory.

Radford, VA - Kenny Thomas scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds as the Radford Highlanders held off a second-half charge by the Liberty Flames before eventually pulling away for a 69-52 victory in the first round of the Big South Championship.

"We didn't have our best game offensively, but our defense came to play tonight," Jason Whitt said. "We managed to limit the damage Liberty did in the inside and luckily for us, they had a bad shooting night."

The old addage of 'Live by the three, die by the three' was in full display tonight as the Flames hit just one of 24 attempts from three point range. The Highlanders took advantage of the long rebounds, as evident by Thomas's double-double performance.

In addition to Thomas, the Highlanders had three other players in double-figures tonight in a balanced effort.

The Flames were led by Armon Jones, who scored ten points.

With the victory, the Highlanders advance to the semi-finals of the Big South Championship, where they will meet the fifth-seed Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, who defeated the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs 84-72. The Highlanders and Chanticleers split their season series, with the Chanticleers winning the January 26th matchup 84-58 and the Highlanders winning the February 25th matchup 82-59.

Notes: Jamar Jenkins banged up his knee in tonights matchup. The sore knee may knock Jenkins out of the starting lineup for the Coastal Carolina game. If that happens, expect Chris McEachin to get the start. In the latest ESPN Bracketology, Joe Lunardi has the Highlanders as the 16th-seed in the West Regional, where they would play the Lousiville Cardinals.

It seems like whenever a guy picks up an injury like that, they sometimes can't hit water if they fell out of a boat for the rest of the game. I'm bringing him off the bench next game and we'll see which team shows up against Coastal Carolina.

                        Radford advances to title game
Highlanders pull away in second half for 74-53 victory.

Radford, VA - Kenny Thomas continued his hot shooting tonight in the Big South Championship semifinals. Thomas scored 20 points on only ten shots as the Radford Highlanders turned up the defensive pressure in the second half to suffocate Coastal Carolina in a 74-53 victory that advances the Highlanders to their second straight Big South final.

"Kenny was great tonight," said Radford coach Jason Whitt. "Of course, he's been doing this all year. And you have to give him credit because he hasn't shot the ball as well this year, but he has improved so much this year at getting to the line and knocking down his free throws. Tonight though, we saw the Kenny Thomas from last year who can light you up from deep."

In addition to Thomas, two other players scored in double figures for the Highlanders. Amir Johnson scored 12 points and dished out four assists despite early foul trouble. Jamar Jenkins, coming off the bench due to a sore knee, chipped in with an 11 point, six rebound performance.

The Chanticleers were led by Steven Sexton, who scored 13 points.

In the other semifinal, the #3 VMI Keydets defeated the #2 High Point Panthers 102-92. The Highlanders handidly defeated the Keydets in both of their regular season matchups. But Whitt preached caution to his guys heading into the Big South final.

"We're one game away from our dream of playing in the Big Dance, but you can't look past VMI," Whitt said. "We did blow them out both times we played them, but they are a good team. You have to be to make it this far. And beating a team three times in a row is one of the hardest things to do in basketball. But we'll be prepared."

Notes: Chris McEachin suffered a sprained knee in tonight's action but said he was going to play in the Big South final. Coach Whitt said that starting Jamar Jenkins would be a game-time decision due to his knee injury. If Jenkins comes off the bench again, expect Martell McDuffy to start after the injury to McEachin. In his latest Bracketology, ESPN's Joe Lunardi has the Highlanders as the 15th seed in the West region playing against the 11th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

                          TICKET PUNCHED
Radford going to the dance for first time since 1998.

Radford, VA - When Jason Whitt was hired two years ago, the expectations were it would take three years to see if this was going to be a good hire. Coach Whitt paid dividends right off the bat his first year, getting the Highlanders one game away from the NCAA Tournament. After that surprise run, the expectations rose dramatically, with many in Radford saying "post-season or bust".

                          Those expectations were met tonight.

Using a 25-7 run to blow a close game wide-open, the Radford Highlanders defeated the VMI Keydets 79-60 to be named the 2008-09 Big South Champions as well as punching their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

"Two years ago, I would have never imagined this in my wildest dreams," Whitt said. "It still hasn't sunk in completely. But I'm glad we got to cut the nets down in front of our home fans who have stuck by us this year. These are the best fans in the Big South, by far."

In a game where Radford wasn't their best offensively, they used a stingy defense to frustrate the Keydets into several mistakes and poor shot selection.

"We got up in their faces," Whitt said. "You have to take the three away from VMI and we did that. And our press was wonderful tonight. When you can hold a team to nearly a 1:1 assist/turnover ratio, you've done you're job on the defensive end."

The Highlanders used a balanced attack tonight, with five players scoring in double-figures, led by Amir Johnson's 14 points.

The Keydets were led by the Holmes twins, who combined for 29 points (Chavis - 19, Travis - 10).

The Highlanders will have plenty of time for celebration, with Selection Sunday still a week away. The Athletic Department announced that they would be hosting a Selection Sunday party at the Dedmon Center with free attendance for the fans.

Notes: Nick McFarlin banged his knee up in tonight's action, but should be ready to go once the NCAA Tournament rolls around. In his latest bracketology, ESPN's Joe Lunardi has Radford in the East Regional as a 15-seed taking on the seventh-ranked Connecticut Huskies.
