Thanks! And to answer your question, I think so. I really like the CAA as there are some pretty good team in it and they wont all be pushovers like there are in really small conferences (such as the SWAC, where I was with Texas Southern).

If the UNC job ever opens and I'm offered I'll take it in a heartbeat, no questions. But I won't leave VCU for any "power school" that offers me.

The VCU Rams suffered their first loss of the season tonight in the opening round of the Paradise Jam Tournament to the #15 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets by a score of 66-52.

The Jackets defense was swarming all night as they suffocated the Ram guards into bad shots. The Ram backcourt duo of Denver Thomasson and Iker Pleiness combined for 12 points on 4-19 shooting.

The bigger guards for Georgia Tech were simply too much to handle and penetration into the lane was virtually non-existent all night long. After shooting a blistering 60.8% in their last game, the Rams shot a dismal 35%.

The Rams hung in the game for awhile though as they played very good defense of their own, especially in the first half. However, Jacket SF Brian Oliver took over in the second half and helped Georgia Tech cruise to a relatively easy victory.

Coach Martinez and VCU hope to rebound in thier next contest vs. UW-Milwaukee, who was defeated by VMI earlier this afternoon.

          Box Score:

First Round Analysis: Horrible luck for VCU as they'll have to play a top 10 team regardless if they win or lose in their next game. WVU losing was a bit of a surprise, but they were overrated to start the season to begin with. Texas is loaded, but Creighton hit 10 threes and managed to pull of the upset. VMI's Stan Okoye is proving to be one of the best mid-major players this year as he scored 31 points and nabbed 8 boards to help his team knocked off the Panthers.

The VCU Rams bounced back from their loss to #15 Georgia Tech as they defeated the Panthers of UW-Milwaukee 62-48 Saturday night in the Consolation Bracket of the Paradise Jam tournament.

It certainly was not a pretty game by any stretch of the imagination, but the Rams got the win behind stellar defense and timely shot-making.

Coach Martinez stated in his press conference, "Man, watching my team on offense is like pulling teeth. It's been ugly out there the past two games for us. I have confidence however that we'll start putting the ball in the basket at the frequency that I'd like to see. Luckily, our defense has been pretty damn good these first three games, and hopefully we'll be able to continue that when we play our next opponent."

Ram PG Denver Thomasson has struggled mightily in his first three games in Martinez's offense. After having a good outing against Harvard, Thomasson put together a terrible 8-point/4-assist/4-turnover outing (on 3-13 shooting) against a below average Panther team. However, SG Iker Pleiness picked up the slack as he tallied a career high 21 points on 5-8 shooting, including 8-9 from the foul line.

              Box Score:

              VCU

              FG: 22/55
              3PT: 5/10
              FT: 13/18

SG Ikey Pleiness - 21 pts, 3 rebs
SG Rob Brandenburg - 10 pts
              C DJ Haley - 9 pts, 12 rebs, 3 asts

              UW-Milwaukee

              FG: 19/55
              3PT: 2/16
              FT: 8/13

PG Lonnie Boga - 9 pts, 4 asts

                VCU - 62

Tournament Analysis - Creighton fights off a game Fairleigh Dickson squad, led by a good performance from SF Doug McDermott (17 pts, 9 rebs, 6 asts, 3 stls). Georgia Tech, to the surprise of nobody, manhandles VMI. Texas absolutely blows out a West Virginia team that was clearly not ready to play after the upset to Fairleigh Dickson the previous day. Talk about an overrated preseason ranking. VCU and Coach Martinez will face Texas in their next game; a program that Martinez has become all too familiar with in his first two years as a head coach.

In the 5th-place game of the Paradise Jam Tournament, the Texas Longhorns easily dispatched the VCU Rams 74-58. The Longhorns played stifling defense all game long and also shot the ball extremely well (26-49). Inexplicably, the Longhorns were dropped from the Top 25 after losing by one point to a good Creighton squad (and then rebounding to pummel then #6 West Virginia by 34). It was obvious that Texas played angry tonight as they dunked and ally-ooped their way to a resounding victory.

The fourth time was not a charm for Coach Martinez as he lost to the Longhorns for the fourth time in four meetings against a program that he considers his biggest current rival.

"I was at Texas Southern for two years, so I got to experience the hate and disdain that the people in that area hold towards Texas. Their arrogance and superiority complex that they hold over the rest of the schools in Texas has really pushed a lot of people in the program the wrong way for a long time.

We played them three times in my two years there, and were close to winning in two of those games, including last year in the NCAAs. It just so happened they were in the Paradise field this year and we ended up playing them again. It sucks losing to them for basically the third time in one calendar year; however, this loss tonight won't deter me from scheduling a possible home and home series in the future as I really want to take Texas down as soon as a I get the next opportunity."

This contest was nowhere near as competitive as the two matchups that took place between Martinez's Tigers and the Longhorns last season. VCU does not have a Lawrence Danner-Johnson-type player on this team that can just take over and drill outside shots on a consistent basis, and their inside guys do not have the post-up game that the Tigers possessed.

As a result, the Longhorns' D dominated for start to finish, and the score was closer than it should have been. Two stud sophomore's on Texas, PG Branduinn McClurkin and SF Jaeh Djordic combined for 31 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals.

VCU finishes a disappointing 6th-place in the Paradise Jam Tournament and will look to bounce back this Sunday against a UMBC team that made the NCAA Tournament last year.

The VCU Rams rebounded from their disappointing showing in the Paradise Jam to defeat the UMBC Retrievers Sunday afternoon by a score of 75-65.

The Rams did not take the Retrievers lightly coming into this contest as they made the NCAA Tournament last year as a surprise at-large bid. This was not the same Retriever team from last year, but coach Martinez and his squad remained wary of their opponent, and for good reason.

VCU could never pull away throughout the contest. They led for most of the game, but everytime it looked like the would run away with the game, UMBC would score a few baskets in a row to remain within striking distance. The game was played at a much slower pace than the Rams would have like, so although they shot a good percentage (27/53), they grew visibly frustrated as the contest wore on.

In the end, though, the Rams were able to hold on to the victory thanks to a few timely threes from SG Rob Brandenburg and free throws by PG Denver Thomasson to seal the deal.

VCU will travel a few miles to face bitter rival Richmond in their next contest.

The VCU Rams played perhaps their best game of the season Wednesday afternoon as they downed the Richmond Spiders 69-59.

The Ram defense, as they have for much of the up to this point, was stifling and got big stops when they needed it most. VCU's offense has not been easy on the eyes this year, but they performed well in a game that was played at a much slower pace than they would have liked. However, instead of showing frustration the way they did against UMBC, the Rams played calm and collected basketball on the road and defeated their cross-town rival.

"I couldn't be prouder of the guys after this win," remarked coach Logan Martinez. He continued, "We walked into a hostile environment and performed extremely well, especially in the second half. [Iker] Pleiness played outstanding, [Rob] Brandenburg hit some big threes, and although DJ [Haley] didn't do much box score wise, he played outstanding defense in the post against their superb center, Dedrick Griffin" (a former 4-star prospect).

The final score is not a good indicator of how the Rams played, as the Spiders went on a 9-0 run to end the game when the reserves were in. VCU (4-2) has now won two in a row and will host ECU (3-1) on Sunday.

Strong defensive showings by VCU you've got going. Nice work.

Solid win against Richmond. Not sure how I haven't commented yet but you know I'm following.
