SAN MARCOS, TX—The Texas State Bobcats have announced that they will hire former Western University Dolphins Head Coach Pete Bell. Bell was head coach leading the Dolphins to three NCAA Tournaments in his six years as coach. Bell had been suspended for the previous five seasons from the infractions that happened at the now defunct Western University.

Western University was found by the NCAA to be playing football and basketball players. Neon Bodeaux, Ricky Roe and Butch McRae all admitted to accepting money from boosters under Bell’s watch. If you recall, Bell initially quit but was then subject to the investigation of the NCAA. As a result, Bell was forced to have his record wiped clean and all awards gone.

Bell will take over a senior-laden Bobcat team lead by small forward Cameron Johnson. Fellow Seniors Ryan White and Jonathon Sloan also look to contribute. Texas State’s last and only tournament appearance was in 1994 when they lost to UMASS 78-60.

Blue Chips II: The Return and Coaching Legacy of Pete Bell

    Pre-Season Press Conference
“Hello, this is Kevin Hamilton with the Bobcat Gazette. Today, we have a special guest. Head Basketball Coach Pete Bell joins us today for a few quick questions on the upcoming season.”

KH: Coach, you’re coming off a five-year suspension from your time at Western University. Are you excited to get back on the bench?

PB: Absolutely. I definitely made some mistakes during my time at Western, but I was nothing but helpful with the NCAA Investigation and I paid my time. I’ve been itching to get back to coaching for about the last two years.

KH: That’s great to hear coach. What do you think of this year’s team?

PB: I’m excited to coach these guys. We have seven seniors with experience on this team. We aren’t the biggest team I’ve coached but we should be able to shoot threes and play some defense. I like to press and get up in the opposition, so if we do that, we should be able to compete.

KH: What do you think of star forward Cameron Johnson?

PB: Cam has got a lot of potential. He has multiple skills on the basketball floor. He can score, pass and rebound. He has a great chance for an excellent senior season to cap off a great career.

KH: What are your expectations for this year’s team?

PB: I think we should be able to compete in the Southland Conference this year. Early on and out of conference, it could be tough for us. We have some hard matchups that I think will benefit us by season’s end. I am looking forward to the trip to Washington to take on Gonzaga and Washington State.

KH: Thanks for joining us Coach.

Blue Chips II: The Return and Coaching Legacy of Pete Bell

A little twist I will be adding to my legacy is that I will be creating prospects that did not go to high school either because they chose to make the leap straight to the NBA or they came straight from an international background. I have about 30 or so guys I want to do and plan on using 5 per year for the first six years. First group of created prospects are:

          GAME ONE: 100 Club Classic

Poor Rebounding and Shooting upend Bobcats in Season Opener
In a game that featured a lot of threes and a lot of rebounds, Texas State could not seem to make one or grab one. In their first game under coach Pete Bell, the Bobcats failed to get anything going and lost 73-57 to Colgate in the opening round of the 100 Club Classic.

Colgate raced out to an early halftime lead of 37-23 behind seven first half 3’s. “They were hot early on and when we finally contained the 3, they just continued to get offensive rebounds and second chance points.” Coach Bell said. The Raiders dominated the boards with a +16 advantage (34-18). Coach Bell, “We aren’t the biggest team, but it is not an excuse for the huge rebounding advantage.”

The Bobcats were led by Jonathon Sloan with 12 points on 5-5 shooting. Senior Cameron Johnson had a tough night shooting (5-14) but finished with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. The Bobcats face either Kennesaw St. or Jacksonville St. in the consolation game of the 100 Club Classic.

            Game Two: 100 Club Classic

Bobcats Ride Hot 3-Pt Shooting in Rout of Kennesaw State
Texas State jumped out to an early 13-0 lead and never looked back in defeating the Kennesaw State Owls. The Bobcats used great three point shooting and forward Cameron Johnson’s 25 points and 6 rebounds to win 86-50. “Cameron was excellent tonight. He really found himself in opportunities to make plays and get buckets,” Bobcat coach Pete Bell said after the game.

Not only did the offense play well, the defense shut limited their 3-point opportunities and did not convert them when they had the chance. The Owls shot 5-19 from downtown and never really got into a flow of the offense. The Bobcats did a great job of limiting touches in the post which allowed them to tighten up the pressure on the perimeter.

Next: Texas State takes on Jackson State in the home opener.

              Game Three: vs. Jackson State

Johnson’s Huge Game leads Bobcats to OT win in Season Home Opener

Down 16 with nine minutes to go, Coach Bell said he needed someone to step up. “Cam did just that,” Bell said. “He was unbelievable tonight.” Cameron Johnson scored 30 of his 38 points in the second half and overtime to pull out a 103-93 victory. Johnson also had 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. “Coach told me to go out there and relax. I had been pressing a little bit during the first two games. Being down allowed me to relax and find my spots,” Johnson said after the game.

It was as exciting of a game as you’ll find in the early parts of the season. Jonathon Sloan had 20 points and 8 rebounds to go along with a few huge defensive stops in the second half. Eddie Rios had 7 steals and was a huge contributing factor to the comeback in the second half. “I think Rio (Eddie Rios) and Jonathon did an excellent job of disrupting their offene in the second half,” Coach Bell said. “Now we just need to get the fans in here to watch a game.”

Tonight’s attendance of 468 was a record low for a season opener. If the team keeps playing games like this, it will not be low forever. Next: Texas State travels to Lubbock to take on the Raiders of Texas Tech.

                Game 4

                Game Four: @ Texas Tech

Bobcats’ lead late but Raiders squeak by 73-69

Texas State was leading by one with 2 minutes to go, however offensive let downs in the final minutes allowed Texas Tech to squeak by the Bobcats. “We played outstanding and showed a lot of heart,” Coach Bell said, “We just failed to execute down the stretch and that led to our demise.” Down 3 with 48 seconds to go, the Bobcats wound the clock down, but Eddie Rios was stripped of the ball as he drove the lane and as they say, that’s all she wrote folks!

The Bobcats actually outrebound the Raiders and were led by Cameron Johnson’s 8 rebounds. However, a poor shooting night (5-14) did not allow for the Bobcats leading scorer to find a groove. However, backcourt mates Eddie Rios and Ryan White combined for 37 points, 8 assists and 9 3’s. “Those two absolutely shot the hell outta the ball tonight,” Bell said, “They were the reason we were in the game in the first place.”

Next: The Bobcats head back home to take on the Rice Owls.

                  Game Five: vs. Rice

Bobcats overcome poor shooting, beat Rice 60-57

Texas State overcame a poor shooting night (24-58) to pull out a home victory over the Rice Owls. The 41% shooting was the lowest of the season, but the Bobcats forced a season high in turnovers. “Guys got open looks all night,” Coach Bell said, “Sometimes shots just don’t fall, that’s part of basketball.” Bell continued, “Our defense was phenomenal however.”

The Bobcats harassed Rice’s leading scorer Craig Pflleger all night long and forced him into a rough shooting night (4-15). They also got a great game out of PF Jonathon Sloan. He was (4-4) for 10 points as well as six rebounds and four steals. Two of the those steals came on the Owls’ two final possession, essentially closing out the game.

                    Game Six @ Texas A &M

Bobcats push Aggies to OT, but fall 93-87
In a game where the Bobcats were down as many as 23 at the beginning of the second half, you would find it hard to imagine Coach Bell thinking the guys played well. “It was a tale of two halves tonight,” Bell said, “The second half was the best stretch of basketball we’ve played all year.”

After trailing 46-33 at halftime, the Aggies stretched their lead to 23 thanks to a 14-4 run to start the second half. However, the Bobcats did not give in. They stormed back to take tie the game only to fall in OT. Coach Bell said, “We just couldn’t make shots in overtime. We were wore down but I’m proud of my guys for battling.”

Cameron Johnson led the Bobcats with 21 points and got a combined 37 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists from the backcourt of White and Rios while power forward Jonathon Sloan added 11 points.

                      Early Season Recruiting Recap

                      Early Season Recruiting Recap

Kevin Hamilton, with the Bobcat Gazette. We will be talking with Coach Bell about early season thoughts and the early signing period. The Bobcats have signed 3 Star SF prospect out of San Antonio, Texas, Manny Horner.
KH: Coach Bell, what are your thoughts on the season so far?

PB: I think we’ve played really well up to this point. After the opening game blow out against Colgate, I was a little worried but our guys are resilient and were able to bounce back. I was really surprised how we competed against Texas Tech and Texas A&M. They could have put us away earlier, but our guys are resilient and battled and showed their stuff.

KH: Manny Horner has signed his LOI with Texas State. What are your thoughts on him?

PB: Manny is a great kid. He is an all around great player and rebounds at an extremely high rate for his position. He has some great versatility as he might see some time at the 4 for us. He needs to get in the gym and put up some shots and work on that outside touch a bit.

KH: Manny was the only early season signee. What are your plans for recruiting the rest of the way?

PB: Right now, we are looking at everybody. We have seven seniors on scholarships so there are some shoes and positions that need to be filled. Our coaches are constantly scouting and we have a few guys on our radar.

KH: Thanks for joining us coach.

Johnson’s Free Throws push Bobcats ahead of UC-Davis

With one second left and the game tied at 69, Cameron Johnson stepped to the free throw line. Johnson calmly hit two free throws allowing the Bobcats to beat the Aggies 71-69. “Cam carried us all night long,” Coach Bell said, “We were sluggish all night long but he really came through and carried us to the victory.” Johnson also had 10 rebounds and 3 assists.

The Bobcats never seemed into this game. They only were up by one at halftime and shot 42% from the field. Ryan White really struggled scoring only 3 points and going 1-11 on FG and 0-6 on 3’s. “The guys really picked me up tonight.” White said. In his place, Tony Bishop stepped up and added 10 points off the bench, making two 3s and playing solid defense.

Next: The Bobcats travel to Spokane, WA to take on Gonzaga.

Texas State’s First Trip to Spokane ends in Defeat
Texas State played its first game in Spokane, Washington the Gonzaga Bulldogs. If there were a year to get the Bulldogs, this would have been the year. Gonzaga came in with a 5-6 record. However, the Bulldogs came out strong in this one and defeated the Bobcats 86-74.

“They have one of the best front courts in the country,” Coach Bell said, “Harris, Olynyk and Sacre are three great big man and are a force to stop.” Those 3 combined for 34 points and 19 rebounds while Steven Gray chipped in with 21.

The Bobcats were able to keep it close early only down 35-33 at half. Matt Staff had his first double-double of the season with 10 points and11 rebounds. Cameron Johnson went for 20 again, scoring 24 points on 10-19 shooting.

NEXT: Bobcats will continue the trip in Washington with a drive to Pullman to take on the Washington State Cougars.

                              Bobcats Shock #14 Washington State,

                              Beat Cougars 78-69
Down 14 halfway into the first half on the floor of a top 15 team in the nation, most teams would have folded. However, Texas State regrouped and made it a one-point game at the half. Coach Bell said, “I told the guys at half, we have an opportunity here, let’s go out and get it done!” That is exactly what they did.

The Bobcats held the Cougars to only 27 second half points and really locked down on D towards the end of the game. Shots that seemed to be dropping in the first half for the Cougs stopped in the second half. “We got huge contributions from everybody down the line,” Coach Bell said, “I couldn’t be happier!’

The Bobcats got huge contributions off the bench from Jack Bowman and Tony Bishop, with Bishop hitting three 3’s and scoring 13 points, while Bowman locked down Klay Thompson in the second half. “Coach told me I would get minutes in the second because of my defense. He wanted me all over (Klay) Thompson and that’s what he got.”

NEXT: The Bobcats finish off their out of conference with a home game against Independent Texas-Pan American.
