Game 1 2K Sports College Hoops Classic “C” @ Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt just too much, roll past Texas State 78-58

In the opening game of the 2k Sports College Hoops Classic, the Commodores of Vanderbilt were just a bit too much for the Bobcats to handle. Falling down 19 at half, the Bobcats never recovered. “That is a very good Vanderbilt team,” Coach Bell said after the game. “It’s gonna be tough for us to score this year, much different than last year.” He added. Vanderbilt was led by sharp shooter John Jenkins with 17 points.

The Bobcats struggled mightily with shooting and turnovers all night. Only making one 3 and having 15 turnovers is far from the recipe that guided the Bobcats to success in the previous season. Eddie Rios had 14 points and 5 assists while Matt Staff had a very solid game with 14 points and 9 rebounds.

NEXT: Texas State will look to rebound in the consolation game vs. SC Upstate.

Virginia Tech made it to the Elite Eight? No clue how that happened, but I'm not complaining lol. Tough way to have the first season end, but hopefully the second season will be an improvement, good luck

Game 2 2K Sports College Hoops Classic “C” vs. SC Upstate

Rios’ Big Second Half carries Texas State past SC Upstate 74-65

Coach Bell really got in to his players during halftime. They were trailing 38-34 to a lowly SC Upstate team. “We needed multiple people to step up.” Bell said after the game. “There was no energy, no effort, whatsoever.” Bell said. Texas State outscored SC Upstate 40-27 in the second half. The Bobcats shot 53% for the game including a scorching 58% in the second half.

Eddie Rios scored a career high 30 points, 23 of which were scored in the second half. Rios was scorching hot in the second half, making six shots in a row at one point. “I was really feeling good in the second half.” Rios said after the game. “Coach called us out at half time and as the senior of this team it was my job to step up.” Matt Staff contributed 14 points and 8 rebounds but fouled out late in the second half. Maury Torres filled in to the tune of 12 rebounds and 1 key block late.

                        Game 3 vs. Texas Southern

Matt Staff’s Career Night Propels Texas State past Texas Southern in OT 74-65

Matt Staff had a career night in a closely contested game that the Bobcats won in overtime. Staff had 30 points and 13 rebounds on a career high 21 FG attempts. “We wanted to make a real effort to feed Matt tonight.” Coach Bell said after the game. “He really showed what he is capable of tonight.” Staff is currently averaging 19.3 points and 10 rebounds a game.

While Staff had the career night, it was Eddie Rios who hit the biggest shots of the night. Rios scored 10 of his 15 points including 2 key threes late in possessions. Manny Horner also had his third consecutive double-digit scoring game adding 11 point, but it was Staff who was the workhorse on the night. “I just tried to get the best shots when I got the ball down low,” Staff said after the game. “He was a beast!” Basil Brown shouted across from the locker room.

                          Game 4 @ Colorado State

Poor Shooting, Even Worse Rebounding help Texas State fall to Colorado State 69-62

Colorado State shot a whopping 65% from the field and held a 27-14 rebound advantage. “When your opponent is making a ton of shots from the field and you’re barely making any, that usually spells trouble.” Coach Pete Bell said after the game. “We just got beat by a better team tonight.” The Bobcats kept things close despite the poor shooting but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Matt Staff led the Bobcats with 24 points but was in foul trouble night, which really affected the offense. Eddie Rios had one of his worst nights in a Bobcat uniform going 1-12 from the field and 0-7 from the 3 point line. “I couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean tonight. “ Rios said after the game. “It’s gonna be really tough for us to win if I’m going 1-12”. Manny Horner continued his strong start to his Freshman campaign with 13 points.

The Bulldogs attacked relentlessly all night, both on defense and offense, leading to a 21 to 1 free throws attempted advantage. “We got up in them on defense and attacked them on offense.” Coach Bell said after the game. “We were the aggressors all night and the final score shows that.”

Texas State Rides a Hot First Half, Holds on Against Long Beach St. 75-69

The Bobcats shot an eye-popping 70% from the field in the first half. They took a 50-30 lead in to the half time break. Whatever Dan Monson said to the 49ers it worked as they held the Bobcats to 7-21 (33%) from the field in the second half. However, it was not enough and the Bobcats buckled down in the final minutes. “Of course I didn’t want to see us squander a lead like that” Coach Bell said after the game. “But we got stops when we needed to and that’s all that matters.”

Matt Staff had his 2nd straight double-double and third of the season posting 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Bobcats also got strong bench play in the game, specifically Steve Rogers and Maury Torres. Torres had 8 points and 6 rebounds while Rogers contributed 5 points and 6 dimes. “Matt got into foul trouble early in the second half,” Torres said after the game. “It was important for me to come in and give coach good minutes.” The 50 points in the first half were a high for the Texas State Bobcats under Bell’s tenure.

Wild Finish to Regulation pushes Bobcats past Toreros in OT 91-83

Texas State and San Diego played a wild one on Wednesday night. Marcus Parham stole the ball under the Toreros basket and laid it in as time expired. The game was then sent to OT where the Bobcats dominated. “Hell of a come back by the guys” Coach Bell said after the game, “We pressed a lot more in the second half to speed up the tempo and that really worked out in our favor.” The Bobcats shot 29 free throws making a ridiculous 27 of them.

The Bobcats were lead by their leaders tonight. Matt Staff and Eddie Rios both had 24 points while Rios had 8 assists and Staff had 12 rebounds. “We got the pick and roll working well with me and Matt,” Rios said after the game. “We were able to pick apart the D from there.” Freshman Manny and Horner and Marcus Parham had 2 very solid overall games. The duo combined for 15 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. The Bobcats went a surprising 2-0 on their two game California road trip.

Next: The Bobcats are home to host Pacific.
