Game 27 Conference Quarterfinal vs. University-Texas San Antonio

Bobcats’ Fast Start Propels Them Past the Road Runners 75-58

The Bobcats raced out to an 11-2 start and never looked back. Behind 61% shooting from the field, Texas State raced out to a 17 point halftime lead and coasted from there. “We were definitely ready to play tonight.” Coach Bell said after the game. “We need to harness that energy and bring in into the next game.”

Cameron Johnson had 15 points (6-10 FG), 7 assists and 5 rebounds. “I was really amped for tonight’s game. We have an opportunity to make some noise here,” Ryan White said after the game. The Bobcats bench saw extended action in the second half to give starters some rest.

Game 28 Conference Semi-Final vs. Stephen F. Austin

Antonio Bostic hits 40-footer at the buzzer, Lumberjacks beat Bobcats 72-69

With 1.3 seconds left, Antonio Bostic hit a 40 foot 3 point shot to upset the Texas State Bobcats. After JB Conley hit a 3 to tie the game with 4 seconds left to go, the Lumberjacks crossed half court and calmly called timeout. The Lumberjacks looked to be in trouble as the shot they were looking for was covered. However, it turns out they got the exact shot they wanted. “I was more of an outlet for Brewster then anything.” Bostic, leading scorer with 20 points, said after the game, “I got the ball took one step and heaved it. I couldn’t believe it went in.”

This defeat is a heart breaker for the Bobcats. With a postseason berth not guaranteed, the seven seniors wondered if this would be their last game. “It was definitely emotional in the locker room.” Coach Bell said, “These guys wanted to go out with a conference championship.” The Bobcats made some big plays to get back into the game but it just wasn’t enough.

Cameron Johnson led the Bobcats with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Ryan White, who hit some big three pointers down the stretch finished with 11 points. The front court duo of Jonathon Sloan and Matt Staff combined for a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Game 29 NIT Round 1 vs. East Tennessee State

Another Heart Breaker for Texas State, fall to E. Tennessee St. 82-79

Texas State, hosting its first NIT Tournament game, lost the lead late and fell to East Tennessee State. In a game they controlled most of the way, the Bobcats saw the lead slip away in the last five minutes. Point guard Justin Tubbs torched the Bobcats for 32 points (14-21 FG) and 8 assists. “Another tough way to lose one.” Coach Bell said after the loss. “But that Tubbs kid was unstoppable. Really carried the load for them and we did not have anyone that could match it.” The Bobcats shot a season low 5 free throws and turned it over 14 times.

The Bobcats had 4 players in double figures. All seniors, Ryan White (17 points), Cameron Johnson (16 points), JB Conley (15 points) and Jonathon Sloan (15 points) all scored in double figures for the Bobcats. Cameron Johnson, holding back tears after the game,” I know it’s not the Final Four or anything, but we had a real successful year this year and I would have loved to see it continue.” The Bobcats finish a strong campaign at 19-10.

                                Post Season Press Conference

Kevin Hamilton, here again, with the Bobcat Gazette. I am here with Coach Bell to speak about the 2010-2011 Texas State Season.

KH: First of, what are your thoughts on the season coach?

PB: I think we really exceeded expectations. We won 19 games, tied for first in our conference and hosted our first NIT tournament game. All the credit goes to that group of guys. There are going to be a lot of big shoes to fill next year. I am really gonna miss that group of guys.

KH: Speaking of, what are your plans for next year?

PB: Well, we will have Eddie Rios back who was a first team all conference performer this year. Matt Staff will be back and we’ll probably look to get him a little more involved with the offense. We’re gonna get him in the gym this summer and work on his post game. As for the rest, it is pretty open. We’re hitting the recruiting trail hard right now and as I said before, we have a lot of shoes to fill.

KH: 7 scholarships to be exact (6 with Manny Manny Horner signing in the early period). Any plans on what you’re gonna do?

PB: We have a lot of minutes open next year. You saw what were about last year. I’m gonna be going after shooters and I want to add a couple of bigs. I want our big man to have more of a defensive presence in the coming years and that is what we have been beginning to focus on.

KH. Thanks for your time as usual Coach.
