    Game 21 @ Nicholls State

Staff’s Career Night Carries Texas State Past Nicholls State 67-58

Matt Staff threw his team on his big shoulders Thursday night. With the team struggling, tired and on the road, Staff stepped up in a big way to the tune of 37 points and 16 rebounds. “We had a huge size advantage on them tonight.” Coach Bell said. “Besides no one else was making $%#!.” The Bobcats made a season low 2 three pointers but thanks to the advantage in the post held a 11-3 advantage from the free throw line.

Anyone not named Matt Staff combined to go 13-38 (34%) from the field. This has become a reoccurring theme throughout the season. Many of the players have really struggled on the road compared to being at home. However, Eddie Rios’ 1 three pointer was a big one. It extended the Bobcat lead to 59-52 with 1:30 left in the game and really pushed the game out reach.

      Game 22 vs. UT-Arlington

Brown, Staff Come Up Big in Overtime win Against UT-Arlington 84-79

Basil Brown hit a 3 pointer with 0.1 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 72 and send it into overtime. Matt Staff did the rest from there as the Bobcats outscored the Mavericks 12-7 in the extra period. However, the game came with its fair share of bad news. Starting Point Guard Eddie Rios seemed to injury his ankle on a drive early in the second half. “It looks like he didn’t break anything, just a high ankle sprain.” Coach Bell said after the game. “He’ll probably be out the next two games at least.” The offense rally seemed to sputter once Rios went out and leaves the team with no consistent 3 point shooting.

Matt Staff continued his strong play in the Southland Conference by scoring 25 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. He had 7 of his points come in overtime. “It is really gonna be tough for us with out Rio(s)” Staff said after the game. “You could see our offense stall a bit in the second half.” Manny Horner added 14 points on 7-18 shooting and Rios added 15 points before his injury.

Looks like you will just be running away with this conference. Wonder how far you can go, be it the NIT or NCAA.

            Game 23 @ McNeese State

True Team Effort Leads Bobcats Past Cowboys 77-70

In a game that was a tale of two halves, the Texas State Bobcats used a team effort to beat the McNeese State Cowboys Thursday night. Playing without starting Point Guard, Eddie Rios, the Bobcats lacked a leader in the first half and as a result were down night at the break. “Second half was a different story,” Coach Bell said after the game.” Multiple guys stepped up and that was exactly what we needed.” The Bobcats saw 4 guys in double figures.

Matt Staff had another big effort going for 27 points and 13 rebounds. However, the most important player was Basil Brown. Brown hit four 3 pointers in the second half which really spaced the floor out. This ultimately allowed Staff to have more roam to work in the paint. “Eddie is our best three point shooter,” Brown said after the game. “I just tried to get some open looks and knock down some shots. I know how important that is for our team.” The Bobcats shot a season low 8 three pointers but made 5 of them and went a perfect 16-16 from the free throw line.

Game 24 @ Sam Houston State

Bobcats’ Comeback Attempt Falls Short, Lose to Bearkats 71-70

Not exactly the recipe for a comeback. Your leading scorer and rebounder plagued with foul trouble, including getting his 4th foul with one minute into the second half and your point guard and senior leader is on the bench with crutches and a high ankle sprain. However, the Bobcats were able to rally behind an unlikely scorer to attempt a comeback. The comeback came up short when Basil Brown’s pass was intercepted and time ran out.

John Bowman, whose career high prior to tonight was 8, had 24 points. “John was tremendous tonight. People forget he’s a senior too.” Coach Bell said after the game. “I’m proud of him and this team for fighting back tonight. Unfortunately it was not enough.” Matt Staff, playing a season low in minutes, had 14 points and 7 rebounds. This was the second game in a row the Bobcats found themselves down with a sizeable lead at halftime.

Game 25 vs. Texas A&M CC

Late Run Pushes Bobcats Past Islanders 64-62

The Bobcats won a thrilling game Thursday night against the Texas A&M Islanders. Texas State closed the game on a 13-8 to defeat Texas A&M. However, three consecutive missed free throws from Matt Staff gave the Islanders one last chance, but to no success as Garland Judkins 3 at the buzzer hit the front rim. “Whew! That was a close one,” Coach Bell said after the game. “We really needed this one, especially in the standings.” The Bobcats still sit atop the standings in the Southland Conference.

Matt Staff shot particularly poor in the first half (2-8), but finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Manny Horner also finished with 14 points on 6-10 shooting. Steve Rogers had a huge contribution of 11 assists. “I was really able to get into the zone and create some open shots for my teammates in the second half.” Rogers said after the game. “We were really stagnant in the first half and it was important for us to get that zone moving.” The 64 points was the lowest points scored in a Bobcat win all season.

Game 26 vs. Stephen F. Austin

Stephen F. Austin Beats Texas State 65-64 in Wild Finish

Antonio Bostic hit one out of two free throws with 4.8 seconds left to help the Lumberjacks edge the Bobcats Saturday night. Bostic was fouled by Manny Horner as he drove to the basket and hit the second of the two free throws. The ending was a wild finish as the Bobcats scored 7 points in 35 seconds to tie the game at 64. Basil Brown hit a 3 from the left corner with 14.6 seconds left to bring the game to a tie before Bostic’s free throw. “Questionable call there at the end.” Bell said after the game. “The refs are usually pretty good but in that situation you gotta let the kids play.” The Bobcats had an unusually high 14 turnovers in the game compared to only 4 for the Lumberjacks.

Every player on the Bobcats scored at least 3 points, led by Matt Staff’s 19 points and 12 rebounds. Staff had another strong game but continued to struggle a bit as the focal point of the Bobcat offense. Steve Rogers had another nice game finding open players and finished with 9 assists. Jereal Scott had another solid game against the Bobcats scoring 12 points and 6 rebounds and playing great interior defense against Staff.

                    Game 27 @ Lamar

Staff’s Free Throws Late Beat Cardinals 58-56, Gives Bobcats Regular Season Championship

The Bobcats knew coming into the game all they had to do was win the game and they would be regular season champions. With Nicholls State’s throttling of Central Arkansas, it dropped both of those teams to 10-6 and gave the Bobcats a chance to be the only 11-5 team left. Matt Staff hit two free throws with 3.5 seconds left and that’s exactly what they did. “Excellent game by the team,” Coach Bell said after the win. “We really grinded this victory out and obviously wanted to be regular season champions.” The 58 points was a season low for the Bobcats but thankfully it came in a victory.

Matt Staff struggled shooting from the field going a season worse 5-14. However, he hit the two biggest free throws and finished with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Steve Rogers played the game of his life, recording his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. “I wanted to be more aggressive this game.” Rogers said after the game. “I’ve been taking like 2 shots a game since Rio has been out and I just wanted to attack tonight.” The nine shots he took tonight was more (7) than he took in the previous four games he started.
