    Game 4 @ #3 Kansas

Wolfpack keep it close, fall to Jayhawks 100-87

In a game that was full of offense, the Wolfpack could not muster up enough to stay in the game. The Jayhawks used a 10-2 run with 4 minutes left to put the game out of reach. The Jayhawks were led by Royce Woolridge who had 28 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. The Wolfpack held Thomas Robinson to 0 points in 8 foul plagued minutes. However, they could not stop his replacement, Walter Howard who had 15 points. “Proud of the guys for battling tonight,” Coach Bell said after the game. “We just did not have enough though.” In a game that was filled with offense the teams combined for only 7 made 3 pointers.

The Wolfpack had 4 people in double figures. Joseph Bonner led the way with 31 points on 10-19 shooting. Deonte Burton added double digit points (12) for the first time all season. Devonte Elliot has been a super sub so far off the bench. He added another 15 points and 5 rebounds for Nevada. Asked about his play so far off the bench, Elliot responded, “I am getting good minutes even if I’m off the bench, I am just looking to bring some energy and do my thing out there.” The loss drops the Wolfpack to 1-3 on the year.

      Game 5 vs. Tennessee Tech

Nevada gets much needed win, beats Tennessee Tech 78-71

Nevada never felt comfortable but got enough to beat the pesky Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech. The Wolfpack were the aggressors all game and might have gotten some home cooking, but outshot the Golden Eagles 29-11 at the free throw line. “There’s always one or two questionable calls,” Coach Bell said after the game. “Fortunatley for us the calls went our way tonight.” The game was tied at halftime and the Wolfpack then went on an 8-2 run to give them some breathing room.

The Wolfpack saw their most balanced offensive game of the season. Four players scored in double figures. Led by Joseph Bonner’s first double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds, Nevada shot 51% from the field. Deonte Burton had a season high 17 points to go along with 7 assists. Cesar Reid continued to play well defensively grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking 2 shots. “I am starting to feel more comfortable in my role out there.” Reid said after the game. “Coach is allowing me to roam more on D and it’s really worked well.” The Wolfpack stop a 3 game skid with the win and stand at 2-3 on the season.

Ralston Turner hit a 3 pointer with 7.5 seconds left to give LSU a three point win over Nevada in the opening round of the South Padre Island Tournament. Malik Story’s jumper from the free throw line clanked front rim as time expired and the Wolfpack suffer another loss to a ranked opponent. “That’s a game we should have won tonight.” Coach Bell said after the game. “They stole that one from of us, I’m not gonna lie this one stings a bit.” This is the third straight loss to a ranked opponent for the Wolfpack on the season.

Joseph Bonner had a career high 36 points, including an eye popping 9-11 from three point land. Bonner hit his first 9 three point attempts before his final two attempts were misses. “I was really in a zone tonight.” Bonner said, who hit 12-19 shots, “Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for us to get the win tonight.” Deonte Burton was the only other member of the Wolfpack with 16 points and 9 assists. Yes, despite the record so far I am really enjoying Nevada. This Bonner guy is one of my favorite players to ever play with in any bball game, let alone ch2k8. Thanks for following!

                    Game 8 vs. Portland

Nevada uses strong second half to beat Portland 77-66

Deonte Burton and Joe Bonner hit threes on back-to-back possessions with under 1:30 left and gave the Wolfpack their largest lead of the game, which ultimately ended up the final score. The Wolfpack was down two heading into half thanks to a John Bailey 3 pointer at the buzzer. However, Nevada recovered and outscored the Pilots by 13 in the second half. “Obviously, a much better second half for us.” Coach Bell said after the game. “They were really killing us on the offensive boards in the first and we were able to control that in the second half.” The win brings the Wolfpack to 4-4 on the season.

Joseph Bonner led the way again for the Wolpack with 27 points and 7 rebounds, including 5-9 from 3-point range. Deonte Burton played strongly with 18 points and 10 assists. “Deonte is really coming into his zone right now.” Bonner said after the game. “He’s really doing a great job of getting us open looks and finding his own shot.” Jordan Burris and Cesar Reid combined for 13 points and 14 rebounds, in a game which rebounds were at a premium.

                      Game 9 @ #16 Pittsburgh

Nevada Finally beats Ranked Foe, Upsets #16 Pittsburgh 73-68

Maybe the new saying should be “fourth times the charm”. On their fourth attempt playing a ranked opponent this season, the Nevada Wolfpack finally broke through and beat #16 Pittsburgh. The Wolfpack had previously played Texas, Kansas and LSU all ranked in the top 20. “Finally we were able to get one tonight.” Coach Bell said after the upset win. “I am really happy for my guys tonight. I could tell they really wanted it before the game.” The win puts the Wolfpack above the .500 mark at 5-4.

Deonte Burton scored a season high 23 points and came up big with many late points, repeatedly beating Travon Woodall of the bounce. Joseph Bonner, who was blanketed by defenders all night, scored a season low 16 points on 4-12 shooting. However, Devonte Elliot picked up the slack with 16 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals off the bench. “I saw that it could be really tough for us to score tonight.” Elliot said after the game. “My first few shots went in and I continued to find myself open in great scoring positions.”

NEXT: The Wolfpack continue the East Coast road trip at George Washington Saturday night.

Malik Story explodes for 26 points, propels Nevada past George Washington 87-68

Malik Story scored a career high 26 points on 9-11 shooting, including 5 threes, to lead the visiting Nevada Wolfpack past the George Washington Colonials. Story, coming into the game averaging 9 points, scored 15 points by halftime to help Nevada lead 45-38. “Malik was fantastic tonight.” Coach Bell said after the game. “I was waiting for a game like that where he was clicking on all cylinders.” The Wolfpack continued the aggressive, attacking offense, which helped them have a 19-7 free throw shooting advantage.

Jospeh Bonner scored 22 points and had 6 rebounds. Bonner continues to score at blistering rate and is currently averaging 25.8 points per game. Cesar Reid had the first double-double of his career, scoring a career high 12 points to go with a career high 11 rebounds. “Reid was a beast tonight.” Deonte Burton said after the game. “He really asserted himself early and often.” The win makes the Wolfpack 6-4 on the year.

                            Early Season Recruiting Recap

                            THE WOLFPACK WEEKLY
Bob Willingham, here with the Wolfpack Weekly. We are gonna have a quick Q&A with Coach Pete Bell regarding the early recruiting signing period, recruits and his out look for the rest of the season.

BW: Coach, first off thanks for joining us. The early signing period has come and gone. No recruits for Nevada in the early period. Comments?

PB: Well Bob, we aren’t too concerned with the early signing period this year. As a new coaching staff, it is gonna take us sometime to get to know some of the recruits in this area. Therefore, we just did not have enough time to get someone comfortable enough to sign with us in the early period.

BW: With that being said, Can you talk about who you’re looking at so far?

PB: Well we have 3 scholarships available for next season and we are looking at 3 specific guys right now. First is Brandon Jennings, one of the top players in the country. The kid is lightning quick and he has “in the gym” range. We have been able to develop a great relationship up to this point and believe we are the front runners for his services right now. Next, we’ve offered SG Vernon Prato from Plano, TX. I’ve known Prato’s parents since our time at Texas State and we have developed a great relationship. The kid can really score, he’s athletic and his potential his through the roof. Right now, it seems as though he’s leaning towards playing at a bigger program but the season is a long one. Finally, we’re the front runners for Jaret Pait, from San Antonio, another kid we’ve known since Texas State. He’s 6’10” and one of the best centers coming out in this year’s class. His stock was through the roof early on the season, but a broken ankle in his second game has hurt his stock around the nation, which is good for us.

BW: Coach, you are 6-4 at this point. You have 3 more non-conference games and then conference schedule starts. What’s your outlook?

PB: I think we have great potential on this team. Those early games at Texas and at Kansas really made our team bond together. We are playing excellent ball as of late. We’ve won 4 in a row and 5 out of our last 6. I think we are gonna be tough in the WAC and believe we have a real good shot of making the NCAA Tournament.

BW: As always, thanks for stopping by Coach.
