    Game 13 vs. SE Louisiana

Jake Lockett Scores 17, SE Louisiana upsets Texas State 72-66

Jeremy Campbell hit a 3 pointer with 1:07 left in the second half to extend the Lions lead to six and stop a late surge by the Bobcats. Campbell hit three 3’s on the night but might have saved his best for last. Jake Lockett had 17 points and 6 rebounds and did his best in neutralizing Texas State Forward Matt Staff. The Lions had six point lead at halftime behind forcing 8 turnovers compared to only 1 for Texas State.

Eddie Rios, 21 points and 6 assists, and Matt Staff, 23 points and 10 rebounds, led the way for the Bobcats. However, no other player scored more than 8 points and the rest of the team shot 10-23. “Someone needs to step up if we are going to have continued success.” Coach Bell said after the game, “We know those two (Rios & Staff) are gonna bring it every night, but we need some consistency from someone else to take it to another level.” This was Texas State’s first home loss of the season.

      Game 14 @ Central Arkansas

Texas State Bounces Back, Routs Central Arkansas 83-63

Coach Bell said the guys had a long week of practice following their loss to SE Louisiana last week. “There was a lot of running and getting back to the basics.” Coach Bell said after the win. “I was not very pleased, to say the least after last week’s loss. I think we really got back to what we do best.” The Bobcats had a nine point half time lead and continued to put it on in the second half.

Manny Horner had a career high 31 points on 12-16 shooting. “Coach told me this week to be aggressive.” Horner said after the game. “I had a size advantage on the wing and I was able to exploit it.” Matt Staff added 15 points and 9 rebounds, while Eddie Rios had 16 points and 6 assists. The Bobcats got the contribution from the third wheel that they’ve been missing all season. The Bobcats shot a season high 66% from the field and each player saw double-digit minutes.

        Game 15 @ University of Texas-San Antonio

Bobcats Rout Second Straight Opponent, Beat Road Runners

The Texas State Bobcats dominated nearly every statistical category. They outrebounded UTSA 36-26, outshot UTSA 50% to 39% and only turned it over six times compared to thirteen. “This was a business trip.” Coach Bell said after the game. “I really got into the guys and challenged them to come back after last week. They really responded and I hope we continue it.” The Bobcats scored a season high 48 points in the first half.

Manny Horner had another big game scoring 24 points on 9-16 shooting. Matt Staff continued to dominate the inside going for 15 points and 14 rebounds. However, the biggest contribution came from the bench. Steve Rogers and Maury Torres combined for 10 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. “Me and Maury have really developed a chemistry.” Rogers said after the game. “We are on the same unit in practice and often come in to the games at the same time.”

              Game 16 vs. McNeese State

Defense Tightens up Late, Bobcats beat Cowboys 76-67

In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Texas State Bobcats were able to lock down on defense in the final 5 minutes and beat McNeese State Thursday night. The Bobcats outscored the Cowboys 16-7 in the final 5 minutes, in part to free throws at the end of the game, but mainly their defense. “That final 5 minutes was the best team defense we’ve played all year,” Coach Bell said after the game. “We need to bottle that for the rest of the season.”The Cowboys held a 2-point halftime lead and controlled most of the second half. Patrick Richard had 23 points for the Cowboys.

The Bobcats were once again led by the duo of Eddie Rios and Matt Staff. Rios had 28 points and 6 assists including a career high 14-14 from the free throw line. Matt Staff continued to dominate the paint by posting another double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. “Those two really set the tone for us every game.” Senior John Bowman said after the game, “Today was no different.”

Game 17 vs. Sam Houston State

Texas State Races Out to Huge Halftime Lead, Beats Sam Houston ST. 69-44

It was a weird first half for the Texas State Bobcats. Arguably, their best player, Matt Staff, was on the bench 3 quick first half fouls. However, they raced out to a 21-8 lead and 44-19 halftime lead. That happens when you can bring a 7 footer off the bench for consistent minutes. Maury Torres had 8 points and 11 rebounds in the first half including 4 offensive rebounds. “His height affected a lot of player’s shots today.” Coach Bell said after the game. “There aren’t many 7 footers in this league.” Sam Houston State shot a season low 27% in the first half.

Matt Staff scored 19 points, most coming in the early minutes of the second half, and had 6 rebounds. Eddie Rios had 14 points and Manny Horner chipped in with 10. “It was great to get out to such a big lead early,” Horner said after the game. ”I wouldn’t mind more of those games in the future.” This is the second year in a row Texas State has blown out Sam Houston State at home.

                  Game 18 @ Texas A&M Corpus Christi

Hollis Hill Drops 32, Islanders Rout Bobcats 85-63
Texas A&M Corpus Christi laid stake to being the best team in the Southland Conference this year. Hollis Hill made 13 of 17 shots, including 6 threes, on his way to 32 points. He also had 6 assists. Texas A&M CC took a 2-point lead at halftime and then outscored the Bobcats by 20 in the second half. “Not much to say about tonight’s game,” Coach Bell said after the game, “We were sorely out played by a better, more aggressive team.” This was Coach Bell’s worst conference lost in his two years with Texas State.

The Islanders did a great job of containing the Bobcats’ leading scorers. Eddie Rios shot 5-17, including 1-8 from three, en route to 11 points. Matt Staff, who was in foul trouble again all night, finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds, but was unable to make his mark due to the fouls. “I got absolutely torched, both offensively and defensively,” Rios said after the game. “I just got to shake this game and come back strong in the next one.” One bright sport, Basil Brown scored a career high 19 points.

                    Game 19 @ Stephen F. Austin

Scott’s And One Pushes Stephen F. Austin Past Texas State 67-64

You knew it was going to be a long night for the Bobcats when on the opening possession they missed a wide-open 3 and 2 layups off offensive rebounds. Jereal Scott had a layup plus the foul with 3.8 seconds left. Scott made the foul shot and the Bobcats crossed midcourt and called timeout with 1.4 seconds left. Eddie Rios got a decent look at it but it hit front rim and fell to the floor. “We really played poorly in that first half.” Coach Bell said after the loss. “That really put us behind in terms of implementing out offense and defense.” The Bobcats have now lost two in a row.

Matt Staff had a huge night going for 16 points and 16 rebounds, but once again struggled with foul trouble. He fouled out wit 3.8 seconds left on Scott’s and-one. Eddie Rios struggled again scoring 13 points but going 4-12 from the field. “This is a tough loss for us.” Staff said after the game. “We were really rolling prior to this week and now we need to regroup.”

NEXT: The Bobcats have a week off before they host Lamar Saturday night.

Nice comeback to avoid the 2 game skid.

Oops, read that wrong, you lost. Hope you bounce back. Southland play looks a little tougher than expected.

                                Game 20 vs. Lamar

Texas State Happy to Be Home, Beats Lamar 81-63

The Bobcats were happy to be back home following a 2 game slide on the road. The Bobcats raced out to an 11-point lead by halftime. Lamar made a run to start the second half getting it as close as 6 with 7:42 left. However, Texas State answered with a 6-0 run, causing Lamar to call a time out and the game was never really close after that. “We responded all night long,” Coach Bell said after the win. “Any time they would try to cut the lead, we would have a response waiting.”

The Bobcats were led by Matt Staff, who had 23 points and 9 rebounds. Joining Staff in double figures were Eddie Rios, who had 16 points and 7 assists, and Manny Horner who scored in double figures for the first time in the past 3 games. “When Manny can get it going, we are a much better team.” Matt Staff said after the game, “If he can contribute, we can be a much better team.”

NEXT: Texas State is on the road at Nicholls State Thursday night.
