Congrats on winning the conference and good luck in the tournament. Only team in the Southland with single digits losses, that'll definitely go a long way on Selection Sunday, just win out.

I am hoping so. Would love a 13/14 seed for winning out

First thing is first obviously, but I think a 13 seed is realistic. Gotta take care of business though.

Game 28 Conference Quarterfinal vs. Stephen F. Austin

Return of Eddie Rios sparks Bobcats, Rout Lumberjacks 64-42

The Texas State Bobcats raced out to an early 34-12 halftime lead and coasted in the second half to beat Stephen F. Austin in a quarterfinal matchup in the Southland Conference. Eddie Rios, captain and starting point guard, returned to the court after missing the last 5 games. The Bobcats maintained at 3-2 while Rios was out, but the offense looked much more in synch tonight. “He is our leader and captain.” Coach Bell said after the game. “We got a lot of young guys on this team that look up to him, so when he’s out there everyone is much more relaxed.” The Bobcats held the Lumberjacks to 25% (5-20) shooting in the first half.

Matt Staff led the way for the Bobcats with another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Rios, returned to play 14 minutes of action and scored 13 points. He hit three 3 pointers and really showed his ability to stretch the floor. “It’s great to have him back.” Matt Staff said after the game. “There is so much more room for everyone to work , when he’s out there.” Steve Rogers continued his strong play with 11 points.

Game 30 Conference Championship vs. Sam Houston State

Bobcats Rout Third Straight Opponent, Beat Sam Houston St. 81-49

The Texas State Bobcats have won the Southland Conference Tournament Championship and will head to the NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats benefited from a Southland Tournament where they did not play a seed higher than 5. They played the 8th seed, 5th seed and then the 6th seeded Bearkats in the Championship. The Bobcats handled the teams as they should have. “We are really playing well right now.” Coach Bell said after he cut the nets down. “We benefitted from some teams losing early on in the tournament but our team is really on a roll right now.” The Bobcats held a +10 advantage on the boards and really controlled the game from tip to end.

The Bobcats had 5 players score in double digits. Matt Staff had another double-double to the tune of 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Eddie Rios led the Bobcats with 18 points, including 16 in the first half. “I remember Cam and Jonathon after last year’s loss,” Rios said after the game. “They took it really hard. I mean the NIT was great but the NCAA tournament is where you want to be at.” Basil Brown had another strong game with 17 points including 4 threes in the first half. The Bobcats will advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history.

                  TOURNAMENT PREVIEW

Kevin Hamilton, here with Coach Bell. We are down at the Strahan Coliseum for the Viewing Party with about 1,500 students and fans.

KH: Coach what is your reaction to the seeding?
PB: Surprised to be honest. I thought we would be in that 13 or 14 range. Am I mad about it? Absolutely not! It just shows how much the committee appreciated the work and effort these guys put in to the season. This is the first time we’ve had an final RPI under 100 in who knows how long.

KH: What do you think of Marquette?
PB: They are a great team. They finished at 23-11 and 13-5 in the conference. That was good for second place in the Big East. Any time you can finish atop of that conference you’ve earned my respect. They are a very good team. Darius Johnson-Odom is heck of a player (17.6 PPG) and Jae Crowder can do it all for them (11.4 PPG).

KH: To pull of the upset, what would it take?
PB: Well we need to make sure we know where Johnson-Odom is at, at all times. We are gonna definitely need to bring out big boy pants. We are gonna need to be able to compete with their physicality in the paint and rebound. We’ve done a great job of that lately but this is another level. We’re gonna have to be able to handle their pressure as well. They like to get up on you and we can’t back down from that.

KH: Thanks for joining me coach. Good Luck in the Tournament

Game 31 NCAA Tournament Round One vs. #5 Marquette

Marquette Just Too Much For Texas State, Beat Bobcats 104-68

The Marquette Golden Eagles proved to be far too much for Texas State to handle falling 104-68. The Bobcats were dominated inside, outside and from the bench. The 61 points Marquette scored in the first half were more points than the Bobcats let up in any entire game in the Southland Conference Tournament. “Hell of a team out there.” Coach Bell said after the game. “A little disappointed in the team though. I knew it would be tough for us to win but I expected a little more out of our guys.” The Golden Eagles shot a blistering 80% on their way to a 27 point half time lead.

Matt Staff led the Bobcats with 16 points but a season low 3 rebounds. He was physically outmatched by the bigger stronger Golden Eagles. Playing in his last game Eddie Rios finished with 10 points on 4-10 shooting. John Bowman, also playing in his last game had 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. “It’s tough right now knowing its over.” Bowman said after the game. “But I know I’ll be able to look back and be extremely proud of this team.” Bowman and Rios will be sorely missed from the Bobcats moving forward.

Ouch man, a rough loss, but Marquette is just a bigger school. Congratulations on the tournament bid though! I'm gonna guess Iowa State wins it all.

Coach Bell has had a great 2 yr run at Texas State and getting to the NCAA's is quite an accomplishment. Looking forward to what doors open next.
