    Game 20 @ McNeese State

Bobcats struggle on the road again, lose to Cowboys 77-68

McNeese State got 26 points from Diego Kapelan on Wednesday night to defeat the visiting Bobcats of Texas State. “He (Kapelan) was outstanding tonight.” Coach Pete Bell said after the game, “He got any type of shot he wanted. He made some threes, drove to the basket and made some plays for the other guys.” McNeese State also got 15 points from Stephan Martin in the win.

The Bobcats shot 47% from the field and committed 13 turnovers. Eddie Rios had six of those. “I was a little sloppy with the ball tonight.” Rios said after the game, “I tried to force some things that weren’t really there tonight.” The Bobcats got 16 points from Cameron Johnson (3-10 FG) and JB Conley (7-8 FG). Tony Bishop was able to play after he was injured in the last game. He added 8 points in 14 minutes.

        Game 21 vs. Lamar

Bishop’s Block helps Texas State Stop Lamar 74-71

The game had been a back in forth battle all game long. All the Bobcats needed one was one more stop. After Eddie Rios knocked down two free throws to put the Bobcats up 3, the Cardinals got the ball back with 12 seconds left. The ball ended up in the hands of Anthony Miles, who had 4 threes and 18 points up to that point. Bishop hounded him in to a tough shot and was able to get a piece of it as time expired.

“It was a great effort. My guys were tired, I could see it in the huddle,” Coach Bell said, ”But they gritted that last stop out and got a W.” Cameron Johnson led the way with 19 points and 6 rebounds. He was met in double figured by JB Conley, who has been superb off the bench as of late, with 17 points. In Conley’s last game he is shooting 23-31 (74%) and averaging 16.6 points a game. “I am really able to get going with that second unit and it carries throughout the game.” Conley said after the game.

Playing all the games. I use 13 minute halves so I am able to knock out a good chunk of them at a time.

            Game 22 @ Texas A&M Corpus Christi

Texas A&M Corpus Christi Outlasts Texas State in 2OT Thriller 115-109

In a game of many twists and turns, Texas State had adversity facing them the entire game. The Bobcats were down as many as 23 and a comeback would be especially difficult with star forward Cameron Johnson having foul trouble all-night and fouling out with 3 minutes to go in regulation. However, Texas State stormed back and Eddie Rios hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. “We did not deserve to be in that game what so ever.” Coach Bell said after the loss, “I am proud of my guys for digging deep and playing their hearts out.” Many players contributed in tonight’s game.

In a game where numerous people saw a season high in minutes, JB Conley had a season high 22 points and 8 rebounds while Eddie Rios also hit 20 points to go with a season high 10 assists. The Bobcats saw 6 guys in double figures but it was not enough to overcome the Islanders. Hollis Hill had 33 points for the Islanders while Jawan Nelson had 29 points and 12 rebounds.

                    Game 23 vs. UTSA

Rios’ Big Night Propels Texas State past University of Texas-San Antonio 86-81

Coach Pete Bell was waiting for a game like this from his junior point guard. “I know Rio is capable of playing at this type of level night in and night out” Bell said after the game. “He was the leader of our guys and the best player on the floor tonight. Period.” Eddie Rios had 25 points, including the game tying 3 pointer with 4.3 seconds remaining in regulation, and 5 assists.

“Coach wanted me to take that shot.” Eddie said after the game, “Sloan was able to get a huge offensive rebound and kick the ball out to me for the 3.” Cameron Johnson took a 3 with around 8 seconds left and missed but Jonathon Sloan was in the right place at the right time. Cameron Johnson chipped in with 19 points and 8 rebounds while JB Conley added 15 off the bench.

Game 24 vs. Stephen F. Austin

Texas State starts early, rolls past Stephen F. Austin 82-57

In a game that was not close from the tip, Coach Bell was happy that he was able to get a lot of guys minutes this late in the season. “Everyone got double digit minutes tonight,” Bell said, “That’s key this time of the year to make sure everyone is on the same page.” The Bobcats shot 55% from the field and dominated the rebounding margin 40-19.

Cameron Johnson led the Bobcats with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He was met in double figured by Eddie Rios and Jon Sloan both contributing 12 points. “We’re really coming together right now,” Eddie Rios said after the game, “We’re all Seniors. This is our last chance to do something together.”

Game 25 @ Sam Houston State

First Place Tilt Doesn’t Disappoint, Bobcats edge Bearkcats in OT 96-85

In a game that did not disappoint Texas State was able to beat Sam Houston State 96-85 in overtime. Cameron Johnson stole the ball, laid it in and was fouled with 12.4 seconds left to tie the score 78-78 in regulation. Johnson did not hit the free throw but the Bobcats locked down on D and the Bearkats were unable to get a shot up and the game was sent in to overtime. The Bobcats dominated 18-7 in overtime.

“We battled that entire game. We were down 12 at half and most of the second half,” Coach Bell said following the win. “My guys were resilient as ever and I could not be more proud of them.” Texas State and Sam Houston State came into the game with a 10-4 conference record and in a 3-way tie with McNeese State for first place.

Cameron Johnson led the team with another double-double, 26 points and 10 rebounds. JB Conley had a season high 23 points off the bench with 5 threes. “JB was the key for us tonight. He came in and gave us a HUGE lift off the bench.” Cam Johnson said after the game. Texas State’s backcourt added 36 points and 9 assists.
