      COACH DEUCE VS THE BEARS

      OPPONENT PREVIEW
When Coach Deuce left Northern Colorado for Oregon State, he made a commitment to play the Bears in each of the next 4 years as a promise to the recruits he was leaving behind.

Tonight marks that 4th game of that commitment as the Bears start 4 former Coach Dezaron recruits. 6'8 SF Jarrad Vignale (86 OVR) is the team leader. A 4* recuit out of Albuquerque New Mexico when Coach D signed him, has blossom into a potential NBA draft pick (2nd Round Buzz). He comes in averaging 16.7 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.2 SPG, 1.7 BPG.

Vignale is joined by Omar Hopkins(82 OVR) another former 4* recruit who is averaging 14.6 PPG as well as 6'8 R. McCleod (86 OVR) and 6'8 I. Dearman (82 OVR)

      GAME RECAP

This was a game of runs, started by Northern Colorado. A 13-5 run with 9 minutes left in the half made it 21-17, NC then made another huge run (15-6) to extend the lead to 36-23 with 2:32 to play, but in the final 2 minutes OSU would make a run of their own (13-4) including a “3” by Spears with 7 seconds to play to make it (40-36) at the half.

The 2nd half also was full of runs. NC would build a 15 point lead early in the half, but a 14-0 run by the Beavers would make it (62-61) with 6 minutes to play. With 1:19 to play Taft has a chance to tie the game but his 3pt rims in and out, as the Bears grab the rebound and call the timeout. After a NC basket Taft would answer back leaving OSU still down by 3 with 48 seconds to play. On the inbound play OSU would force a turnover as once again the ball is put in Taft’s hands to tie the game but once again the SR comes up short leaving OSU still needing a stop. Forced to press, OSU gets the turnover they need as Spears forces a jump ball with the possession arrow in the Beavers favor. This time it would be Spears who takes the inbound pass and puts up the quick 3pt with 31 seconds to play, but again the ball just doesn’t drop. After an intentional foul and 2 made F.T.’s the Beavers were now down by 5. Again OSU would try from downtown and again Taft fail to deliver but an offensive rebound followed by a steal by A. Gerlach (4 pt play) leave OSU down (83-82). Rather than try and run out the clock, Northern Colorado pushes the ball down court quickly and fires a quick 3pt that could’ve sealed the deal, but instead OSU grabs the rebound and calls timeout with 6.6 seconds to play.

OSU gets the look they wanted as Spears drives the lane and dishes to Ray for what should’ve been the winning basket, but Ray’s shot slides off the rim leaving all in attendance in shock. OSU is once again forced to foul but NC delivers knocking down by F.T.’s to make it a 3 point game. Spears would take the inbound with 1.6 seconds to play and fire off a desperation half court attempt but the ball hits the front of the iron as the Bears hand Oregon State their 3rd loss of the season.

FINAL SCORE NORTHERN COLORADO-85 OREGON STATE-82

      KEY PLAYERS
      J. Vignale-18 pts 9 reb is named POG
      R. McCloud-18 pts 7 reb 4 assist 3 stls
      O. Hopkins-12 pts 9 assist (0/7 3pt)
      R. Al-sayyad-10 pts 10 reb (Bench)

      R. Conroy-10 pts

      Coach Deuce
"I have to give them credit, they played a great game and made their F.T.'s (17/21). We played well enough to keep it close but shooting 13/21 from the stripe, 7/26 from 3pt, and 31/73 from the field is not going to win alot of games. All we can do now is put it behind us and get ready for Portland on Wednesday"

          BEAVERS CRUISE TO TITLE!!

          TOURNAMENT RECAP

Oregon State opened the tournament with a Round 1 game vs (0-8) Mercer, and dominated the Bears handing them their 9th straight loss in a (102-58) victory.

          W. Ray led the attack with 26 pts 7 reb and 3 blks well R. Spears added 20 pts and 8 asst.

In the Semi Finals, OSU took on (6-3) UCF, and once again the offense exploded hitting the century mark as Oregon State wins big (104-71)

It was the Spears (23 pts 4/7 3pt, 5 assist) and Ray (22 pts) show once again, but E. Taft (12 pts 4/8 3pt), S. Chavez (15 pts bench), and A. Gerlach (14 pts 3/5 3pt) also all had great games

In the Championship Game, the Beavers took on a familar opponent in the Boise State Broncos. The Broncos came into the tournament at (2-8) but beat Arkansas State (86-78) and then beat St John's (65-60) to earn their way to the title round.

BSU however was no match for the Beavers as OSU took a commanding (38-29) lead at the half and then outscored the Broncos by almost 20 in the 2nd half as OSU cruised to the (83-55) victory

          W. Ray led the way with almost a triple double as he finishes with 21 pts 11 reb and a career high 7 blks.

          R. Spears struggled going 3/10 from the field but did manage to finish with 10 pts as he hit 4/8 from the F.T. Line.

          E. Taft also had a double double as he scores 14 (2/5 3pt) and grabs 10 reb

          E. Laws led the bench with 10 pts hitting 4/5 from the F.T. line.

WITH THE VICTORIES OSU IS NOW 10-3 ON THE SEASON AND HAS MOVED TO #10 IN THE LATESTTOP-25 MEDIA POLL. UP NEXT THE BEAVERS WILL CLOSE OUT NON-CONFERENCE PLAY AT HOME VS #4 (11-1) TEXAS

I can't believe how strong Northern Colorado has remained. I figured after a few years they would fall off back into mediocrity, but they haven't.

Well this is their last year of Coach Deuce's recruits and because the coach you replaced me also has left, recruiting has taken a big hit since then. There are 7 Seniors on the roster and once they are gone their top rated player will be like a 72 PG who is a Junior this season. I have a feeling next season a different team will be taking over the Big Sky. Makes me kind of sad..

Makes sense. I only had really one recruiting class at Kennesaw State and now they aren't doing so well once I left. They started out in the Mid-Major Top 25, but last I checked they were only something like 5-5. Also, I can't believe I'm going to Florida! As a Florida State fan, I'm so conflicted playing for the evil Gators.

Well FSU and Georgia Tech both had offered. I tried to jump in late in throw a scholarship offer at your guy once Hughes followed Robinson to Oregon, but by then it was to late and I finished #4.

At this point I am still trailing Colorado for my guy, which I don't understand at all. Colorado did make the tourney last year as a #9 seed, but their current roster has 7 Seniors, so my recruit will come in as the top overall player they have if he signs there. I guess if he wants to be a superstar that would be the place to go.

Yeah first USC gets the #1 last year and now it looks like Oregon will this year. My only hope is that Robinson's skills will be high enough he could end up as a 1 and Done.

                        BEAVERS BEAT AT THE BUZZER!!

                        OPPONENT PREVIEW

Texas comes into the game ranked #4 in the nation with a 11-1 record, with a home win over #8 UCLA. Their 1 loss was to Villanova (84-54) in the Maui Invitational in the Semi-Finals before the Cat went on to beat OSU.

The Longhorns are led by 6'6 JR SG I. Tobias (86 OVR) and 6'9 SR SF Prosper Roberts (90 OVR) as well as 6'7 JR PF F. Granger (85 OVR). All 3 players are averaging double digits with Tobias leading the team at 16.1 PPG.

                        GAME RECAP

It was a tale of 2 halves. Texas dominated Oregon State in the 1st taking a (47-35) lead into the locker room.

In the 2nd half it looked like OSU would never overcome that lead but with less then 2 minutes to play, the Beavers made their move and with 17 seconds to play OSU took the lead for the very first time (90-88). But Texas wasn't about to give up. Even though they were just 3/13 from beyond the arc prior to the buzzer beater, Coach Barnes still chose to hold the ball for the final shot and SO PG Larry Bazin (former 5* Rated #8 Overall/#3 PG, Mr BB TX) came up big hitting just his 2nd "3" of the game (finished 2/5) as he drills the winner at least a good 2 feet beyond the line.

                        FINAL SCORE TEXAS-91 OSU-90

Brazin led Texas with 19 points (11/12 FT), well Tobias added 16 and Granger had 14. Prosper Roberts finished with 7 pts 7 reb 5 assist and 3 steals.

                        W. Ray led the way for OSU in the loss with 19 pts and 8 reb, well S. Chavez had 14 off the bench.

Spears (11) Gerlach (10) and Conroy (10) also hit double digits..

                          Pac-10 Review

Going into the season 4 of the Pac-10 teams started the year in the Top-10 (UCLA #4, Washington #5, Oregon State #6 and Oregon #11) and USC joined the Top-25 at #21.

All 5 teams were projected to challenge for the Pac-10 crown, a title USC has held for 3 season until OSU took over the throne last season.

Now that Non-Conference play is over, it appears that it’s still a 5 team race, however Oregon has been replaced by Arizona State.

UCLA (92) still looks to be the favorite. The Bruins went 11-2 in non-conference play losing on the road to Temple and Texas and at the midway point are sitting at #8 in the Top-25 Media Poll. The Bruins are led by All-American Center A. Benton (17.4 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 1.5 APG, 1.5 SPG, 1.0 BPG) who is considered a Top-10 pick in the upcoming draft.

Washington (93), despite losing leading scorer and 3-time Pac-10 POY C. Samuels went 8-1 in non-conference games losing only to Washington as they find themselves now ranked #7 in the nation in the latest Poll, looks like they will make a solid run and once again finish in the Top-3. All-Amercian SR PF Joe Ross Williams (19.7 PPG, 5.1 RPG,1.3 SPG, 1.8 BPG) currently looks like he could keep the streak alive in bringing home POY honors to Seattle for the 4th straight year.

Oregon State (90) probably has the biggest bullseye on their back after winning the title and winning the national title last season. The Beavers however have struggle in non-conference play already matching their 4 loss total of last season well picking up 10 wins. Their drop from #6 to #17 in the latest polls, have them just 1 or 2 more loss’s away from falling out of the Top-25 completely, but don’t count them out because as most know Coach Deuce and his team love the underdog role. 7’0 JR Wallace Ray leads the Beavers (18.8 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 2.8 BPG), well SR SG R. Spears "Best Playmaker" is averaging (14.3 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 5.1 APG and 2.0 SPG well shooting almost 47% from 3pt (34/73)

Arizona State (87) currently has one of the longest winning streaks in the nation. After losing to Northern Colorado to start the year (75-71), the Sun Devils have won 10 straight to finish 10-1 and are currently sitting at #23 in the Top-25 Media Poll. ASU is led by the duo of SR PG D. Jolly (14.9 PPG,4.6 RPG, 5.3 APG, 1.6 SPG) and SR C S. Obasohan (14.5 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.3 SPG and 1.9 BPG)

USC (92) is no longer rated in the Top-25, but with a 8-2 record (loss to Hawaii at home and San Diego State on the road), the Trojans still have to be considered a major threat within the conference. All-American SG D. Turek (90) is averaging 17.3 PPG for the Trojans and despite being just a JR has NBA scouts buzzing about this 1st Round talent.

Oregon (91) started strong winning their first 5 but come into conference play having lost 4 of their past 5 and are now 8-5, as they have yet to really find help for All-American SR C E. Rickert “Best Pro, Best Overall, Best Big”, who is averaging a league best 25.5 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 1.5 SPG and 2.5 BPG

Stanford (87) comes into Pac-10 play at 10-2 but only 1 of those wins came against a team with a above .500 record and their loss to Savannah State (5-8) on the road (77-73) doesn’t really help their RPI either.

Washington State (88) like Stanford comes in with a good record (8-2), but like Stanford played a very week non-conference schedule with only 1 big win (beat 9-4 BYU at home). Both loss’s came at home against (8-4) New Mexico and (8-4) Iowa State, with the rest of the wins coming against sub .500 ball clubs.

Arizona (88) comes into Pac-10 play 8-4 and following suite like Stanford and WSU did not play a very strong non-conference schedule to make matters worse. If the Cats are going to finish any higher than a #8 seed they will need to pull off some huge upsets

Cal (82) is just 2 years removed from a National Title, but with a current roster of 7 Sophs and 5 Freshman are at least 2 years away from competing just within the conference. They come at 5-5, having lost 3 of their last 4 games.

What's up with Florida playing just 6 non-conference games?

How long can W. Virginia go undefeated?

Where are the non-power schools from the Mountain West, A-10 or any Mid-Major?

Saint Joe's (11-1), Temple (11-2), Dayton (11-1), Fordham (11-3, only team to beat Alabama), Richmond (10-3) Rhode Island (10-2) are seem worthy of a Top-25 spot, as does UNLV (11-4, #8 RPI) and San Diego State (11-5, #18 RPI)

                            MID-MAJOR TOP-10

                            Northern Colorado (10-2)
                            Hawaii (9-1)
                            Utah State (11-3)
                            Towson (8-3)
                            New Orleans (7-3)
                            Florida International (7-3)
                            Saint Mary's (11-4)
                            Northeastern (8-2)
                            Florida Atlantic (7-4)
                            Denver (10-4)

What's happened with Gonzaga, the Bulldogs are just 6-6 and havn't been a factor in the WCC since Coach Few left for Syracuse.

WHOSE THE BEST PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY?

24 player currently are averaging more then 20 points a game, but only 2 of those are guards.

6'9 Andy Bogans (Louisiana-Lafayette) leads the nation in scoring (26.5), but he will face a tough challenge for Mid-Major POY from several guy's including Northern Arizona's J. Tradoe who is the only player averaging a double double (22.6 PPG and 10.3 RPG)

6'11 Tim Blue (UNLV) is the highest scoring player from a Major/Power Conference at (26.2 PPG), but Oregon's E. Rickert has better RPG,SPG, and BPG #'s and is far behind in PPG (25.5 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 1.5 SPG, 2.5 BPG)

BEAVERS START OUT 4-1 IN PAC-10 PLAY

The Beavers kicked off the Pac-10 season with a home win over instate rival Oregon (91-78). This marks the 7th straight game that OSU has defeated the Ducks in the Coach Deuce era.

                              Coach Deuce
"Every year we circle our matchups with Oregon on the calender and talk about how they are must wins for us. It feels good to when we can accomplish those goals. Next year will be tough though they have a great class coming in including 2 potential stars in Robinson and Hughes"
                              GAME NOTES

Oregon actually led at the half as SR E. Rickert showed why he is considered the "Best Player" in the Pac-10 and a potential NCAA POY winner. Rickert scored a team high 24 points for the Ducks in the 1st half alone as Oregon goes into the locker room (51-49). Not wanting to possibly lose their own scoring leader (W. Ray), Coach Deuce put 6'8 SO E. Laws on Rickert in the 2nd half, but Laws had no answer for Rickert, as the bigman dominates scoring career high 42 points including 12-15 from the line.

Laws would foul out, but well Rickert got his 42, Ray and Chavez combined to almost match him as both players scored 20 each. Ray also added 11 rebs and 5 blks. Joining Ray with a double double was R. Conroy (14 pts 15 reb) who slide over to SF to make room for Laws in the lineup.

Oregon State closed out the 5 game stretch returning home to face (6-7) Cal, coming away with 1 point win.

OSU came into the game averaging a NCAA best (90.1 PPG) but shot just 18/56 from the field including 4/22 from downtown lead as they scored a season low 70 points.

Cal led at the half (36-33), but OSU managed to take a 6 point lead with less then a minute to play, but the Bears never gave up hitting a huge "3" with 22 seconds to play and then stole the inbound for a quick 2, to cut the lead to just 1 with 20 seconds on the clock. Rather then foul quickly Cal let Oregon State move the ball to half court before attempting a intentional foul. The Beavers however managed to play keep away as they held on for the win.
