OSU TAKES OVER 1ST PLACE IN PAC-10!

Despite having UCLA end the 8 game winning streak (lost (93-74), Oregon State still has managed to take over 1st place within the Pac-10 conference with a victory over Arizona State (85-62), as the Washington Huskies have now lost 3 of 4 since falling to OSU at home.

With both schools playing their final 2 games of the regular season on the road, it appears that OSU with the 1 game lead is in the drivers seat as the Beavers look to make it 2 years in a row as Pac-10 Champs.

      Game Recaps

Against the Bruins, OSU went into the locker room down (49-38) and just never recovered, as UCLA added to their lead again in the 2nd half behind the play of SR A. Benton (28 pts 10/21 FG 8/9 FT).

      R. Spears had a team high 21 points and 8 assists in the loss, well R. Conroy added a double double with 11 pts and 12 reb.

Against the Sun Devils, OSU would lead at the half (44-37) and dominate on both sides of the ball in the 2nd half, scoring 41 well holding ASU to just 25.

      W. Ray was named POG with 18 pts 6 reb and 3 blks, but Spears also had a soild night with 16 pts and assists, well E. Laws led the bench unit with 16 pts and 5 reb.

Despite the loss, OSU stays at #4 going into their final 2 games on the road @ (17-9) USC and @ (16-13) Oregon

        OREGON STATE REPEATS AS CHAMPS!!

The Oregon State Beavers are closed out the regular season this past week with a pair of road wins beating USC (111-79) and instate rival Oregon (92-78). The victory over the Ducks in the Pit keeps Coach Deuce's perfect record of 8-8 against Oregon in his career since taking over at OSU.

With the victories, OSU also repeated as the regular season Pac-10 Champs, as they go 15-3 in conference play and 25-7 overall. The Beavers will now go into the Pac-10 tournament as the #1 seed and having won 10 of their past 11 games have to be considered a favorite to continue their winning way's..

Against the Trojans, 5 Beavers scored double digits led by W. Ray's 29 points.
        S. Chavez (16) and E. Laws (14) both provided instant offense off the bench well R. Conroy (20 pts 3/3 3pt) and E. Taft (12 pts 2/4 3pt) contributed as well. R. Spears just missed out on a double double as he dishes out a season high 13 assists well finishing with 8 points.

At the Pit, Oregon State would take a (42-40) lead into the locker room, but exploded in the 2nd half to score 50 points well holding the Ducks to just 38.

Once again 5 players hit double digits for the Beavers this time led by SR S. Chavez's 17 points off the bench. E. Laws also had a great game coming off the bench with 15.

Ray (15), Conroy (14) and Spears (13) led the starting unit.

OSU FINISHES STRONG BY WINNING PAC-10 TOURNAMENT!

The Oregon State Beavers added more hardware this week, after wining the Pac-10 regular season title, OSU added the Pac-10 tournament Championship as they mount a massive comeback in the 2nd half to beat Washington. Here is a recap of the entire tournament.

OSU opened the tournament with a (86-80) victory over Stanford, as the team continues to share the ball with 5 players hitting double digits, led by W. Ray's 21 pts 8 reb. R. Spears added a double double with 10 pts and 10 assists despite going 0/4 from 3pt.

In the Semi-Final's, OSU had to mount a 2nd half comeback after trailing (47-39) at the half, but did so behind some solid 3pt shooting, to beat UCLA (94-81)

        R. Spears and W. Ray tied for team lead as each scored 22 points. Spears also added 7 rebs and 7 assists to be named POG.

In the Championship game vs Washington, the Beavers once again found themselves trailing at the half (54-39). However this time with the 3pt shot not falling, OSU had to win this one the hard way by playing solid defense and earning their points every trip down the court.

        5 players hit double digits again in the win, led by W. Ray's 21 pts. E. Taft (17 2/7 3pt), R. Spears (14), A. Gerlach (10) and Chavez (11) were the others.

        J. Ross-Williams had 25 points in the loss, well D. Padilla had just 3 points (0/6 FG, 0/3 3pt)

        Coach Deuce
"I knew after our 2nd half comeback against the Bruins, that my guy's were not going to give up. When we couldn't shoot our way back into the game before the half, I knew we were going to have to come out in the 2nd half with a different approach and they responded."

Despite 5 straight wins and 13 out of their last 14 games, OSU finishes the season at #4 in both the Top-25 Media and Coaches Poll. With a 28-7 Overall record, the Beavers boast the #2 Overall RPI in the nation despite going 6-4 vs Top-25 opponents as they went 19-3 in road games.

With the #4 Ranking and #2 RPI, the Beavers appear to be a lock going into Selection Sunday to receive a #1 seed as they look to repeat as National Champs.

              2016 SELECTION SUNDAY

Welcome to Selection Sunday, the day that every college basketball fan lives for. Will this be the year their school makes a run to the Sweet 16 and beyond? What great new Cinderella team will emerge? Can the Oregon State Beavers and Coach Ryne "The Deuce" Derozan repeat as National Champs? I am your host Greg Gumbel (GG) and joining me in studio today is Clark Kellogg (CK), Seth Davis (SD) and Doug Gottleib (DG)

It's been over almost 10 years since Florida won back to back titles in 06 and 07, but many feel like if anyone has a chance to break the streak, it will be Oregon State.

The Beavers return 4 starters and 8 of their 10 man roster from last year's National Title team and coming into the tournament grab one of the #1 seeds as they will play in the South Regional held at Ford Field.

GG-Guy's what do you think about OSU and their chance's at a repeat?

CK-I don't know Greg, the Beavers have a tough road ahead and with a possible Sweet 16 matchup with either #5 Kansas or #4 Duke and you also can't overlook that fact that both UCLA (#6) and Washington State (#7) are also playing in this regional making for the possibility of rematch with 2 squads that know them well.

SD-I disagree Clark. The Beavers have proven they are one of the most balanced teams in the country when it comes to scoring points. They lead the nation in scoring at 89.5 PPG and have 5 players who finished the year averaging double digits. (W. Ray-16.8, R. Spears-13.9, E. Taft-12.0, S. Chavez-10.8, R. Conroy-10.0)

DG- I agree with Seth. Oregon State has some of the best 3pt shooter's in the nation and has proven they get hot from beyond the arc, nobody is going to beat them. Everybody thinks of Spears and Taft and that dominating starting unit, but SO C. Popoola (28/54 51%), and RS FR's L. Diawara (18/36 50%) and R. Goral (10/22, 45%) have proven when called upon they too can light it up.

GG- Well we know OSU is the #1 seed and have made mention of several of the other teams as well, here is a look at the entire South Regional

#1 Oregon State vs #16 Stephen F. Austin
#8 BYU vs #9 Ole Miss
              #5 Kansas vs #12 Iowa
              #4 Duke vs #13 Niagara
              #6 UCLA vs #11 Hawaii
#3 Miami FL vs #14 Hartford
#7 Washington State vs #10 Seton Hall
#2 Marquette vs #15 High Point

GG-What's your take on some of the other teams from this regional guy's.

CK-I think it starts with #4 Duke. The (22-9) Blue Devils finished 3rd in the ACC this season behind UNC and Miami but don't count them out. Coach K is at 998 career wins and I am sure his players would like nothing less then to get him 1000 in a 2nd Round win.

SD-I really like #11 Hawaii. The Warriors won the WAC regular season title and conference title to finish 25-5. They have 3 very good Senior leaders in their starting lineup led by PF J. Mason (84). They beat USC earlier in the year by 33 and finished non-conference play at 13-1, so I wouldn't overlook them in Round 1.

DG- For me it's #5 Kansas. The Jayhawks started the year #2 in the country and took OSU to OT (118-115). They finished a disappointing 4th place in the Big 12 standings and I know they want to prove they are better then that.

GG-Okay guy's well we have seen the South, now lets go and look at the East Regional, where (30-3) Georgetown has been named the #1 seed. What's your take on this bracket and who do you see emerging as the team that makes it to the Final 4?

#1 Georgetown vs #16 (Jackson vs Coppin State)
              #8 Arkansas vs #9 Wisconsin
              #5 Pitt vs #12 Hofstra
              #4 UConn vs #13 Buffalo
              #6 Oklahoma vs #11 USC
              #3 Flordia vs #14 Belmont
#7 Charlotte vs #10 Saint Louis
#2 North Colorado vs #15 Georgia Southern

CK-For me Georgetown is my pick. They won the Big East regular season title and are going to be out for revenge after losing to Cincinnati in the Big East tourney.

SD-Not me. With both Pitt (who beat the Hoya's) plus UConn as possible Sweet 16 matchup's I don't see them getting even to the Elite 8. Not to mention they have a very tough Round 2 matchup 2 schools who know how to play ball. My pick is Northern Colorado.

DG For me it's Northern Colorado too. The Bears rolled through the Big Sky going 16-0 to finish with the best record in the country at (30-2). They proved in non-conference play they can play with the big boys with wins over UNLV (#2 seed), UCLA (#6 seed) Iowa (#12 seed), Kansas (#5 seed) as well as wins over Arizona State,Kansas State, Virginia Tech and Nevada on the road. Also don't forget they also beat the defending Champs.

GG-Okay guy's well with 32 teams down, let's head out West, where the #2 team in the country (North Carolina) grabs the #1 seed.

#1 North Carolina vs #16 Oral Roberts
              #8 Tennessee vs #9 Dayton
#5 Vanderbilt vs #12 San Diego State
#4 Texas Tech vs #13 Wichita State
              #6 Nebraska vs #11 Saint Mary's
              #3 Texas vs #14 Bucknell
#7 Florida State vs #10 Purdue
#2 Notre Dame vs #15 Tennessee State

CK-Wow Greg I think this is by far the toughest regional yet, top to bottom. Well UNC has had a great season (26-5) after winning the ACC regular season title, I am going to with #3 Texas as my Final 4 pick.

SD--I will agree with Clark on the fact his regional is loaded with Final 4 capable teams and I am going to surprise you with my pick of #12 San Diego State for my Final 4. Well the Aztecs finished just 8-8 in the MWC regular season , they did win the MWC tourney finishing 22-14 and their roster is loaded with veteran talent (7 JR's).

DG-You got to be kidding me Seth, SDSU doesn't even get out of the 1st Round. Vanderbilt has proven to be one of the best teams in the nation the past 3 years and despite a possible matchup with #8 Tennessee in the Sweet 16, they will make a Final 4 run this year.

GG- Wow guy's I am shocked nobody picked #1 Carolina despite the rumors that this could be Coach Williams last year. He almost called it quit's last year but came back to go out as a winner and with the season they have had it would be no better time to leave. Well we are down to our last 16 teams. Let's go to the Midwest Regional where the #1 team in the country (Alabama) has grabbed the #1 seed.

#1 Alabama vs #16 UC Irvine
              #8 Fordham vs #9 Villanova
#5 Saint Joseph vs #12 Butler
              #4 Texas A&M vs #13 Denver
              #6 Louisville vs #11 UTEP
              #3 Washington vs #14 Princeton
              #7 Cincinnati vs #10 Colorado
#2 UNLV vs #15 Long Island

CK-Alabama came up short last year in the Final 4 last year against OSU, but they are my choice to make it back and get revenge. I am looking forward to that matchup and you know they will be looking to get revenge on #8 Fordham in Round 2 as the Rams are 1 of only 4 teams to beat the Tide this year.

SD-I really like #3 Washington alot, but UNLV and Louisville could be too much to even make it to the Sweet 16, however they are still my pick as I believe the Final 4 will be a rematch of the Pac-10 Title game.

DG--I am going with the Running Rebels of UNLV. They won the MWC Regular season title (14-2) and finished 28-7 Overall. Both Polls have them as the #5 team in the country.

Yeah, I was happy to see the Bears grab a #2, but sadly they don't do well in the tournament (finished playing it today) and with 7 Seniors on the roster, my only hopes are they found a couple of decent recruits to at least stay competitive in the Big Sky because their day's of being ranked and beating Top-25 teams are coming to a end

                          NCAA OFFERS PLENTY OF UPSETS!!

The Oregon State Beavers cruised to a 99-69 win over #16 Stephen F Austin in Round 1 behind 30 points from W. Ray but got even better news later that afternoon as #12 Iowa upsets #5 Kansas (73-68) followed by #13 Niagara beating #4 Duke (77-66) paving the way for much easier road in a possible return to the Elite 8 by OSU.

One team OSU won't be facing in any possible Elite 8 matchup is #7 Washington State as the Cougars fall (72-70) to #10 Seton Hall in Round 1.

Well the South offered 3 double digit seeds moving on, the Midwest saw all top seeds advancing, but in the East both #11 USC and #10 Saint Louis both advance.

The Trojans beat #6 Oklahoma (83-78) well the Saint Louis pulled off the (64-62) win over Charlotte.

Out west, #12 San Diego State used O.T. to defeat #5 Vanderbilt (86-83), well #11 Saint Mary's beat #6 Nebraska (83-71).

Maybe your former squad (with your best recruiting class there as seniors) can come out with a championship without the Deuce!

My prediction is if you get past Duke or Kansas at the sweet 16 you coast all the way.

                              DOES THE SLIPPER FIT?

This is the question #11 Saint Mary's is asking after a upset win in Overtime vs #3 Texas (88-83) as the Gaels advance to the Sweet 16 to face #2 Notre Dame.

Joining them in trying on the Slipper will be another #11 seed, as the USC Trojans advance with a (95-74) win over #3 Florida, as well as the Trojans next opponent.

#2 Northern Colorado surprised everyone when they scored just 56 points in their opening round win over #16 Georgia Southern, but left everyone in complete shock as they score just 46 points including just 16 in the 2nd half as they fall to #10 Saint Louis (71-46)

Out West, several brackets were busted as #8 Tennessee pulls off the upset of #1 UNC (94-87) and even more were destroyed when #9 Villanova beat #1 Alabama (79-73) and #7 Cincinnati beat #2 UNLV (96-81) in the Midwest regional.

Down South, #1 Oregon State cruised to a (96-59) win over #8 BYU was 6 players hit double digits

                              A. Gerlach and E. Taft (16), R. Conroy (15) W. Ray (14), R. Spears (12) and S. Chavez (10)

Advancing to face the Beavers in the Sweet 16, will be #13 Niagara who defeated #12 Iowa (74-73) behind 21 points from SO SF B. Nava and 20 points from JR PF T. Zoellner.

My prediction is if you get past Duke or Kansas at the sweet 16 you coast all the way.
Well in case you missed it both Duke and Kansas went down in Round 1, so the Sweet 16 treated me pretty nice as I took on #13 Niagara.

Also Northern Colorado's tourney came to a end after they scored just 46 points in their loss to #10 Saint Louis in Round 2. It totally bummed me out because I thought a OSU vs NC championship would've made for a great story.
