      A RIVALRY IS BORN

It's been said already, but when Coach Ryan took over the Boise State program his #1 goal was/is to build a Mid-Major powerhouse similar to that of what Coach Few has done with Gonzaga. The Bulldogs at one time owned one of the longest home win streaks in the nation. The McCarthey Athletic Center also known to many as "The Kennel" was built in 2004 and for 38 games the Zags had never experienced a loss at home until a Santa Clara loss in 2007. Packed with standing room only (6000+) fans make the Kennel one of the toughest road venues in the nation. Can Coach Ryan earn a "W" in his debut with the Broncos?

      GAME RECAP

Gonzaga came out quick and built a 5-0 lead, but the Broncos rebounded (literally) with 6-2nd chance opportunities to take a 17-7 lead half way through the 1st half. The 10 point lead would hold as BSU continued to dominated the boards as they took a 41-31 lead into the half.

Freshman Khalif Stafford was named Player of the Half as he puts up 12 points and 5 rebounds to lead all scorers.

In the 2nd half, RS JR Bud Wilkins would catch fire hitting 4/5 from 3pt to score 12 of his 17 points extending the Broncos lead. The Zag's had no answer as the entire time minus that of SO PG K. Mulligan would fail to connect on a shot from beyond the arc (0/ 12). Down by over 20, Mulligan would try his best scoring a team high 18 points including 3/6 from deep but in the end the Broncos were just to much. FINAL SCORE BSU-96 GONZAGA-69

The Broncos had 4 players score in double digits with Stafford leading the way earning player of the game honors with 25 points and 7 rebounds. Wilkins added 17 on 5/9 from 3pt well also grabbing 7 boards. SR PG L. Anderews added 14 points well RS JR PF T. Moreno also had 14 pts and a team high 6 assists.

As a team BSU outrebounded Gonzaga 36 to 22.

BRONCOS DOMINATE AT HOME, IMPROVE TO 5-0!!

Looking to follow in the footsteps of Gonzaga, Coach Ryan and Broncos would start by defeating the Zag's on the road and then return home to start their own win streak winning 4 to move to 5-0 on the year.

With a 5-0 start, Boise State would make it's 1st appearance in the Mid Major To-25 poll coming in at #20 in the nation.

Here is a recap of the 4 game homestand

        UC RIVERSIDE
Leading by just 2 at the half (38-36), the Broncos would get a huge boost in the 2nd half was Wilkins and Stafford continue their strong play. Wilkins again hits 3 of his team high 5 3pt's in the 2nd half as he goes 5/7 for the game scoring a team high 19 pts. Stafford picks up his first double double of his career as he adds 17 points and 11 rebounds, well J. Fischer leads the bench with 10 pts and 4 boards. Final Score BSU-80 UCR-66

        UC IRVINE
Leading again (43-38) at the half the Broncos again would turn to JR SG Bud Wilkins for big shots in the 2nd half to keep them in the lead. Trailing by 6 with less then 3 minutes to play, Wilkins would hit back to back 3's to tie the game and then again with 1:15 to play Wilkins would hit his 3rd to give Boise State the 3pt lead. A steal and a bucket put's BSU up 71-66 with less then a minute to play. A miss by the Anteaters and 2 foul shots by the Broncos made it a 7 point lead with less then 30 seconds to play.. Another miss and another intentional foul would seal the deal. FINAL SCORE BSU-75 UCI-66

        T. Moreno led all scorers with 16 points, well Wilkins added 15 points hitting 3/4 from beyond the arc. Stafford was held to a season low 8 points and 5 rebounds after picking up 3 early fouls.

        MOREHEAD STATE
Facing your former team is always tough, facing your former players and guy's you recruited is even tougher.

However Coach Ryan's new team would show no mercy to his former as the Broncos dominate the 1st half to take a commanding 53-25 lead into the locker room led by T. Moreno's 15 points.

In the 2nd half, Coach Ryan would use the lead to give the 2nd unit some extended playing time and allow the starters some much needed rest. The bench responded with a season high 33 points as BSU cruised to victory. FINAL SCORE BSU-84 MSU-46

        T. Moreno led all scorers with 17 pts. Stafford just missed his 2nd double double as he finished with 9 pts and 11 rebs. L. Andrew added 10 points and also dished out a season high 8 assists.

        J. Fischer led the bench with 15 points and 8 rebounds. He also had 3 steals.

        K. Faried led the Eagles in the loss with 16 points..

        PORTLAND STATE
For the 1st time this season, the Broncos trailed at the half (43-39) but a great effort on defense in the 2nd half as they limited the Vikings to just 22 points gave the Broncos the push they needed to make the comeback and perfect record intact. FINAL SCORE BSU-76 PSU-65

        J. Fischer led all scorers with 15 points and 7 rebounds off the bench for the Broncos. T. Moreno (12 pts) and L. Andrew (10 pts) led the starting unit well Wilkins had a season low 3 pts going 1/6 from deep. Stafford once again struggled with fouls and ended up with 9 points and 7 rebs.

UP NEXT BOISE TRAVELS TO SAN FRANCISCO TO TAKE ON THE (5-4)
        DON'S.

            Re: A Legend Reborn II-College Hoops 2k8

Last year Coach Ryan landed a big time prospect in Center Khalif Stafford with his only scholarship after taking over the team.

Going into the season, Coach Ryan had 3 scholarships to offer as he looks to rebuild a backcourt.

Deuce started his search and offered his 1st of 3 scholarships to 6'3 SG Darmetreis Anthony a 4* recruit ranked #83 Overall out of West Jordan Utah. After multiples home visits and a visit to Boise State to see Taco Bell Arena, Anthony returned home however and signed with the Utah Utes.

With Anthony out of the picture, Coach Ryan turned on the fullcourt press offering up a scholarship to one of the nations's best PG unsigned.

5* AA Mr BB Cherokee Humphrey from Sante Fe New Mexico. The 6'1 guard had yet to receive a scholarship offer even though he was being courted by Stanford,Arkansas,Texas and Arizona, so after starting out #8 on his list of schools, Boise State jumped all the way to #1 once a scholarship was offered. Ranked #12 in the nation and the #5 PG, Humphrey would be a huge get for Coach Ryan so early into his rebuilding process.

Coach Ryan "Being able to land a player the caliber of Cherokee is every coaches dream. Some never do it. This kid would be the biggest thing at BSU since Kellen Moore and could end up being the best basketball player to ever suit up for us since former NBA PG Chris Childs. Well I can dream the bigger schools will pass, the reality is once one of them offers we will have to move on, but for now we are going to keep talking and hopefully get him to visit Boise next week. (Currently at 74%)"

With Boise State next scholarship offer, Coach Ryan reached out to a place somewhat close to home and his heart. Coach Ryan grew up spending Christmas's in Billings Montana with his grandparents and that's where he found scholarship offer #2.

6'2 SG Coy Borges is a 4* Recruit rated #36 in the nation and the #18 SG and is Montana's Mr BB. Like Humphrey he received zero scholarship offers despite visits from Nebraska,Wyoming and Utah.

Coach Ryan "We are super excited about Coy. We believe he would be a instant starter for us at the SG spot and gives us another potential deep threat (13.1 PPG and 41% 3PT in ABL)" We are pretty confident in our signing of him as he has already been on campus and is at 93%"

Currently these are the only 2 scholarships offered, as Coach Ryan looks to hold on to 1 scholarship to be offered in the offseason. The Broncos will continue to look for players without offers with the potential to offer them starting spots next season.

                  BOISE STATE SPLITS ROAD GAMES!!!

Going onto the road having won their first 5 games of the season, fan's were wondering just win would Coach Ryan and the Broncos lose??

                  GAME RECAP @ SAN FRANCISCO
The Broncos bench comes up big scoring 37 points well also helping BSU win the rebounding war yet again (31-23).

Leading 44-42 at the half, it was still anyone's game with 4 minutes to play, but a 8-0 run by the Broncos closed the door on the home team as Coach Ryan and his squad improve to 6-0 on the season with a 11 points win. FINAL SCORE BSU-84 USF-73

                  T. Moreno led the starting unit for the 3rd time this season scoring 16 points well B. Wilkins added 12pts despite only shooting 1/3 from deep.

                  J. Fischer led the bench with 14 pts and 5 reb well W. Banjo added a season/career high 9 pts hitting both his shots plus 5/7 from the charity stripe.

                  GAME RECAP @ #7 (10-0) ARIZONA

In a matchup of the unbeatens, Boise State stood no chance against the #7 team in the country. Arizona jumped out to a early 6-0 lead and never looked back. Early foul trouble by B. Wilkins (2 in the first 2 minutes and a 3rd before the half, led Coach Ryan deploying a fullcourt press that just didn't work as the Wildcats went into the locker room up 39-28.

The 2nd half didn't get much better as Boise State continued to struggle as Wilkins picked up his 4th foul early yet again and eventually fouled out without scoring a single bucket. With their only outside threat on the bench, BSU looked to K. Stafford to carry the load but the star freshman had one of those games freshman have sometimes as he goes 2 of 11 from the field to finish with just 9 points to go with his team high 10 rebounds. FINAL SCORE ARIZONA-74 BSU-57

                  J. Fischer led the team in scoring with a career high 18 points, well T. Moreno added 11 pts 5 rebs, 3 assists 2 steals and 3 blks.

GAME RECAP @ (10-0) ARIZONA STATE
Like their instate rivals to the south, the Sun Devils also came into the matchup with a undefeated record and #17 ranking in the coaches poll.

This game was a case of Groundhog day for the Broncos as Wilkins again found himself on the bench early and with another goose egg in the scoring column.

The Sun Devils on the other hand were on fire beyond the arc hitting 6/10 from deep to take a commanding 20 point lead into the half (41-21)

It was like the game was on repeat the entire 2nd half. ASU would fire away hitting from downtown 7 more times to finish 13/28 from beyond the arc led by JR SG Bradley Dux who scored 20 points. Dux entered the game averaging 19.7 PPG on the season. FINAL SCORE ASU-82 BSU-50

                  J. Fischer led the Broncos in scoring yet again finishing with 15 points. A. Bowman led the team with 9 rebounds as Stafford joined Wilkins on the bench for most of the 2nd half with 4 fouls, as he finished with a season low 6 points and 5 rebs.

                  T. Moreno led the starting unit with 10 pts and was the only other Bronco to hit double digits.

GAME RECAP @ (4-4) SAN DIEGO STATE
Boise entered the game having loss 2 straight after a 6-0 start. The Aztecs were the opposite coming in having won 3 of their last 4 after a 1-3 start.

It looked like the Broncos were going to make it 3 straight as they trailed (46-37) at the half, but Wilkins would step up after back to back scoreless games scoring 10 of his team high 13 points in the 2nd half. Wilkins wasn't the only one to help carry the load. His backcourt mate, SR L. Andrews came up big with 11 points and 4 assists to go with his team high 4 steals. However the biggest contribution of the night came in the form of the Broncos bench as they tally 37 points led by J. Fischer 13 pts 6 reb and W. Banjo's 10 pts as the duo goes 11/13 from the charity stripe. FINAL SCORE BSU-78 SDSU-72

                    BRONCOS WIN GOLDEN BEAR CLASSIC

For the 2nd time in 3 years, Coach Ryan and his team have won the Golden Bear Classic at Haas Pavilion.

Coach Ryan "For some teams and players playing on Christmas day away from family and friends is not high on their Christmas list. However a win over the Washington Huskies on Christmas day was the best present I could've asked for and then to follow it up with a win in the championship game was like being told my best present was still under the tree waiting to be opened"

                    GAME RECAP VS (7-2) WASHINGTON
Washington entered the game with a 4 game win streak, but turnovers plagued the Huskies both halves as they found themselves trailing (39-33) at the break and down by 6 with 2 minute's to play. UW would connect on a 3pt to make it a 3 point game, but back to back buckets by the Broncos after yet another turnover gave BSU a 7 point lead with less then a minute to play. Washington would end the game with what had to have been a season high 22 turnovers. FINAL SCORE BSU-72 UW-63

4 Broncos scored in double digits led by Freshman K. Stafford who broke out of his slump to score 16 points well added 6 rebounds. B. Wilkins added 13 points hitting 2/5 from deep, well J. Fischer led the bench with 11 pts and 7 rebs.

                    GAME RECAP VS (6-4) Lehigh
The Hawks won a emotional game at the buzzer over IUPUI (63-60) to punch their ticket to the championship round, but struggled early hitting just 1/11 from 3pt to fall behind (43-31) at the half.

Lehigh's shooting would improve in the 2nd half as they hit 3/10 from beyond the arc, but the post play of the Broncos was just to much to overcome as Boise State rolls to a 23 point victory. FINAL SCORE BSU-82 LEHIGH-59

Freshman K. Stafford led the Broncos in scoring with 21 points and added a career high 3 blks, but it was SO J. Fischer who would take home POG honors as he scored as season high 19 points to go with his team high 13 rebounds finishing with the double double.

Winning the tournament and starting the season out 9-2 didn't come without a cost though as the Broncos were hit hard with injuries. SR SF/PF A. Bowman (Avg 6 PPG and 5 RPG) will miss the next 11 days with a high ankle sprain and JR SG B. Wilkins is listed day to day with a strained calf.

Coach Ryan "Playing with just 9 players and only 8 completely healthy players going into WAC play will be tough but lucky for us we should only be without Bowman in 2 maybe 3 games"

                      CONFERENCE PLAY PREVIEW

The Broncos (9-2) will enter WAC play tied with the most non-conference wins on the season with Utah State (9-3). Well both teams are tied with wins, it's the Aggies who have earned the nations respect was they currently sit #2 in the latest Mid-Major Poll.

Utah State isn't the only team to make the mid-season poll. New Mexico State (8-5) and their conference leading 77.9 PPG and (8-5) record currently sits #14 in the poll well Nevada (7-7) sits #7, led by Senior Center Sid Richardson 's (19.9 PPG). It's safe to say Richardson is a front runner to repeat as the WAC POY. The Wolfpack played a pretty brutal non-conference schedule with loss's @ Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State as well as loss's to Southern Miss (10-1) both at home and on the road. However they also own wins over Depaul (80-55) at home and a road win over #20 (9-3) UConn (89-70)

Coach Ryan "I see no reason why we are not in the Mid-Major Top-25 and I can almost argue that we should be in the Media and Coaches Top-25. Our RPI is currently #2 in the nation with our only loss's coming on the road to Top-25 programs."

With Coach Ryan and the Broncos feeling slighted. One has to wonder how they will perform in their 16 game conference schedule.

Nevada,New Mexico State and Utah State won't be the only tough challenge's ahead for the Boise State, as Louisiana Tech enters WAC play with a 8-3 record including 6 straight. Like the Broncos, the Bulldogs also faced off against current #4 (13-0) Arizona losing to the Wildcats (79-73) in Tuscon.

The rest of the conference will look to play spoiler and potentially give themselves a chance at a .500 record.

San Jose State (4-6), Hawaii (4-7), Fresno State (4-7) and Idaho (4-8)

The Top-25 Media Poll has some very familiar faces at the start of conference play as (11-1) Duke sits #1. The Blue Devils have big wins over #12 Miss State handing the Bulldogs their only loss of the season (11-1), and their only blemish on a non-perfect record was a (81-79) loss to #13 (9-2) Ohio State in Columbus.

(11-0) USC sits #2. The big knock on the Trojans however is their weak non-conference schedule. Their biggest wins came vs (7-5)Florida State and (7-4) Texas Tech at home and a road win over (9-4) Michigan State

(12-1) Tennessee sits #3. The Vol's only loss came to #14 (12-1) Indiana in Bloomington (87-55).

If Boise has a complaint about not being in the Top-25, Indiana can join them in that department cause the Hoosiers should be higher then #14. Indiana owns wins over UNC in Chapel Hill, beat #3 Tennessee and (9-4) Kansas and their only loss was @ home vs #20 (9-3) UConn (79-60)

Arizona sits at #4 with their perfect (13-0) record but that undefeated season could come to an end soon as they face instate rival Arizona State (13-1) next week.

Sign up Oregon for the complaint department. The Ducks are (12-) and sitting #6, 1 spot behind #5 Louisville (10-1). The reason for the complaint. The Ducks beat the Cardinals on the road. Like Arizona however Oregon's undefeated season could be coming to an end soon as they face off against #7 (11-1) Cal next week.

(11-1) Georgetown is #8. The Hoyas lost to N. Iowa (74-68) early in the season but have won 9 straight going into Big East play.

Kentucky is #9 with a 8-1 record, despite only playing 1 team (9-3 Pepperdine) that finished with a record about .500 in non conference play.

Florida is #10 after starting the year 10-0 including a win over #11 (10-1) Maryland. But the Gators have dropped 2 of their last 3 games including a OT loss at home to Stephen F Austin who was (0-9) entering the game.

(10-2) UCLA is #14 with wins over #16 (10-2) Wisconsin and #25 (9-3) NC State.

(9-1) Cincinnati and (9-3) Syracuse are #17 and #18 respectfully.

(8-2) Memphis continues to be the only non-Power conference team in the Top-25 as they are sitting at #19

(11-2) Alabama shows they are not just a football school coming in at #21

                        (8-2) Illinois and (8-1) Michigan are #22 and #24.

(8-2) Stanford is #24 giving the Pac-10 6 of their 10 teams in the Top-25 and (13-1) Arizona State and (10-3) Washington State are both close to joining. Guess it's a bad year to be a Husky or Beaver fan. One of those 2 teams will most likely finish last.

The Coaches Poll is the same 1-3, but changes at #4 as they move up Louisville and Oregon as well as Maryland from #11 to #6.

Arizona is the biggest loser dropping from #4 to #7, but the Coaches love Arizona State putting the Sun Devils in at #21 as they boot out (8-2) Illinois.

The only other big change is the Coaches like (9-2) Iowa State instead of (9-3) NC State at #25.

We know that Utah State, Nevada, and New Mexico State are in, and Boise is not, but here is a look at the rest of the poll.

It's to no one's surprise that (10-3) Gonzaga sits at #1. With Utah State #2, their conference rivals (11-3) Saint Mary's comes in at #3.

(9-3) VCU is #4, well (7-3) Western Michigan is #5.

(7-3) UW-Green Bay is #6, Nevada #7, La Tech is actually #8 (I think I missed that in my WAC preview, thus making it even more B.S. that BSU isn't in the poll)

                        (8-2) W. Carolina and (9-3) Pepperdine round out the Top-10 at #9 and #10

(9-4) Monmouth, (7-4) Bucknell, (8-3) George Mason, New Mexico State and (8-6) Sienna are #11-#15

(6-4) Creighton, (7-4) Middle Tennessee, (8-3) Murray State, (7-7) Western Kentucky and (6-6) Davidson are #16-20

                        (7-3) Boston U, (5-3) Winthrop, (5-4) UC Santa Barbara, (7-4) FAU and (6-5) Indiana State are #17-25.

Just like in Football, it looks like the national media is not huge fans of the Broncos basketball program.

Tough losses to the Arizona squads -- the PAC12 seems to have your number. Good win in the tournament (that victory over the Huskies has to be a confidence boost) but tough luck on the injuries. Depth might be an issue with your team so early on since you haven't had time to really recruit hard yet, hopefully guys stay relatively healthy as the season progresses.

Unfortunate that you can't sniff a ranking -- luckily, March Madness isn't predicated too much on how you rank throughout the year, but the lack of recognition is par for the course for the smaller conferences.
                          Any comments are welcome.

The loss to the Arizona schools were to be expected. They are both Top-25 programs and playing them on the road is a tough task to overcome. The win over the Huskies was huge. I have had some pretty heated rivalry's with them both on the court and off the court (recruiting battles) with them in a past coaching legacy I ran where I spent time at both Boise State, Washington State and Gonzaga. I am looking forward to starting one up with them again on this time around again.

I didn't and don't expect a Top-25 ranking despite a 9-2 record and the #2 RPI, however I feel like I was slighted by the Mid-Major Poll especially being how there is 4 other WAC teams in the Poll. However sadly the game doesn't doesn't factor in your record and RPI as much as it does your team's Overall rating which mine is a 76. I hope one day the NCAA and 2k or EA sports can work around the licensing agreement to make another game. THis game is about to have it's 10 year birthday but is still amazing to play despite it's many flaws.

I would love to see College Basketball and Football sports games on current gen. Honestly, I have the itch to play, but dealing with last gen's lack of features (no screenshots, poor video recording, etc) just kills me.

The college atmosphere is one of the best things in sports. It should be experienced using modern day tech -- it would be mind-blowing.

COACH RYAN LEADS BRONCOS TO 20 WIN SEASON!!!

The Boise State Broncos had previous won 19 games in the past 2 seasons, including just 4 in the WAC Conference last season in a 8-19 finish. But in just his first season at the helm Coach Ryan has turned the Broncos program around.

After a slow start in conference play which saw the Broncos drop 3 of their first 5 games including a blowout at home vs New Mexico (99-70) and a heart breaking OT loss to Nevada on the road (103-100), Boise State would roll winning 6 of their next 7 games to finish the regular season with a 20-7 Overall record and a 3rd place finish in the WAC Conference.

The Broncos would finish 2nd in the Conference in scoring (77.7 PPG), led by their "Big 3" behind SO 6'10 Jaime Fischer (14.2 PPG,5.4 RPG), FR 6'10 Khalif Stafford (13.1 PPG,7.3 RPG,1.3 BPG) and RS JR 6'11 Toree Moreno (10.9 PPG,1.8 BPG).

RS JR SG Bud Wilkins also finished strong averaging 9.1 PPG well shooting almost 40% from deep (51/128, .398)

The Broncos 11-5 finish in the WAC would give them the 3rd seed going into the WAC Conference tournament, which pairs the Conferences best 8 teams against each other for a shot at the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Idaho Vandals finished with the worse record this season winning just 3 games in the WAC (3-8) and 7 and 22 Overall, making one to wonder just how strong the Broncos/Vandals rivalry can be.

Boise State will open tournament play against Hawaii (11-17 Overall, 7-9 WAC). The Broncos swept the Warriors during the regular season with a 80-78 win on the Big Island before dominating them at home in a (94-68) win.

                                Coach Ryan
I am extremely happy with how the team finished out the year and I am really glad the nation finally started to take notice. I feel like we came into the year overlooked because of the past 2 seasons and a roster that is not highly rated, but to finish the year ranked #5 in the Mid-Major Poll and ranked #25 in the RPI rankings should prove to the nation and the fans that this program is on the rise
