    Re: A Legend Reborn II-College Hoops 2k8

I am headed out of town for the weekend for my last Disc Golf tournament of the year (If you have never played you should all check it out, there are great courses all over the country and it's considered to be the fast growing sport in the country). The WAC tournament has been played and I will post the results Sunday when I return.

        BRONCOS FALL IN WAC CHAMPIONSHIP!!

The Opening Round of the WAC tournament started off with a major upset with the regular season champs (New Mexico State) falling to Fresno State (94-89).

La Tech cruised past San Jose State who defeated Idaho in the play in game (74-72) with a (77-51) victory to setup a matchup with Utah who defeated Nevada (83-69).

Trailing (48-45) in the 1st half to Hawaii the Broncos battled the Warriors to the final buzzer pulling off the (87-82) victory to advance to a Semi Finals matchup vs Fresno coming off their upset win.

The Broncos used a balanced attack vs Hawaii with every player scoring a bucket and 5 players finishing in double digits led by 6th man Jamie Fischer (16 pts). L. Andrew was the only starter not to get double digits in points but he did lead the team with 7 assists.

In the Semi Finals, the Broncos again overcame a 1st half deficit trailing the Bulldogs (40-31), but turned things around in the 2nd half again with a balance attack as they pulled off the (76-71) Victory to advance to the Finals.

This time it was T. Moreno just missing a bucket in the final minute that would've give BSU 6 players in double digits as he finishes with 8 points.

        K. Stafford continued to add to his resume for WAC FOY and the NCAA FOY award with another double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, well J. Fischer continues to be dominate in the 6th man role scoring a team high 15 points well also leading the team with 5 assists.

Utah State knocked off La Tech (81-70) to advance to the Finals leaving the Bulldogs wondering if their (22-8) season will be enough to warrant a at large bid.

Beating a team 3 times in the same season can be tough when both teams are very good. This was the case with Boise State and Utah State. The Broncos beat the Aggies (68-67) in a buzzer beating thriller at Taco Bell Arena in Boise early in WAC play and then demolished them in Logan (87-58), well Utah State was out for revenge.

Led by SO PG V Bain (4* former Idaho Mr BB) and SO SF H. Dupre (former 5* AA Utah Mr BB), the Aggies cruised to a (47-35) 1st half lead.

The Broncos had comeback from in both previous games trailing at the half, but not tonight as the Broncos managed just 18 points in the 2nd half as they are embarrassed (98-53).

Bain (19 pts, 5 reb 5 assists) and Dupree (17 pts 10 reb) showed why they are 1st Team All-WAC selections.

Stafford led the Broncos in the loss with 19 pts including a perfect 9/9 at the FT.

Wilkins finished with just 2 points going 0/7 from 3pt before fouling out. The rest of the Broncos were just 1/8 from 3pt in the loss.

With the loss the Broncos finish the 22-8 and just like La Tech (same record) will join the list of bubble teams hoping their strong RPI will get them a at-large invite to the Big Dance.

Boise State's resume is strong as they finish #25 in the RPI rankings well La Tech is #36. Could the WAC really get 3 teams in though. It's never been done before. Stay tune to find out.

          THE 2010 SELECTION SHOW

Welcome to the 2010 Selection Show. I am your host Greg Gumbel joined in studio by Clark Kellogg, Seth Davis and Doug Gottleib.

Let's get started with a look at each conference from around the nation and see who got in and who didn't as we prepare for another exciting tournament.

          American East

Boston U won the regular season title finishing the season at 19-10, but it was the Vermont Catamounts who secured the auto invite winning the conference tournament after going just 8-8 in the regular season. The 15-16 Cat's were given one of this year's #16 seed selections.

          Atlantic Coast

The ACC is known as one of the nations power conferences and it didn't disappoint this year with 6 of the 12 team's receiving invites including #1 Maryland who not only won the regular season title but also defeated Miami FL in the ACC championship game. The Terps finished the year with 28-3 record including 14-2 in the ACC and currently sit #1 in the Coaches Poll and #2 in the Top-25 Media Poll

The Hurricanes might have fallen in the ACC Championship game, but 23 wins and a RPI of #43 secured the Canes a #11 seed and at-large bid.

Joining them in this year's quest for a title will be #9 Georgia Tech (19-11/#23 RPI), #3 Duke (23-8, #6 Media/#4 Coaches, #16 RPI), #11 Boston College (21-12,#37 RPI), #8 NC State (20-11,#29 RPI).

          Atlantic Sun

The Mercer Bears rolled through A-Sun play claiming the regular season title (13-3) and the Conference title to finish 22-9 on the year. For their reward they were given a #10 seed

          Atlantic Ten

The A-10 has in the past produced multiple invites to the Big Dance and with 6 teams finishing with 20 or more wins it looked like it would again, but instead several teams saw their dreams crushed as only 2 teams will have a chance at a trip to Indy this season.

#4 Charlotte won the the regular season title going 13-3 and 26-7 Overall well #6 La Salle won the conference tournament to finish the year 25-7 Overall after a 2nd place finish in the A-10 at 12-4.

Rhode Island (20-10,#57 RPI), Xaiver (20-14 #84 RPI),George Washington (20-13, #94 RPI) and Dayton (20-11 #54 RPI) are all headed to the NIT.

          BIG EAST

Like the ACC, when you mention College basketball, it starts with Big East basketball. 6 teams are headed to this years Big Dance including Conference champ and #1 Seeed Cincinnati. The Bearcats finished 26-4 Overall including 14-2 in conference play and are currently ranked #6 in the Coaches Poll, #5 in the Media Poll and have the #3 RPI Ranking.

#7 Syracuse are winners of the auto bid after defeating #8 UConn in the Big East championship game. The Orange finished with 23 wins and despite no being ranked in the Top-25 Media Poll found much more respect in the coaches poll with a #11 ranking.

The Huskies unranked in both polls, used 22 wins and a #40 RPI ranking to secure their spot among the 6 invites.

          #9 St John's (22-11,#31 RPI), #12 Villanova (19-12, #41 RPI), #6 Louisville (22-10,#9 Coaches/#17 Media and #28 RPI) are the other 4 teams in.

          BIG SKY

Montana won the regular season title going 12-4 to finish the year 1 win shy of 20 (19-9), but it's their instate rival that's going dancing. The Montana State Bobcats won the auto bid with a (73-44) win over Weber State to finish the year (18-12) and secure a #14 seed.

          BIG SOUTH

Winthrop dominated winning both the regular season (10-4) and an tournament titles finishing just 1 shy of 20 wins. (19-8). The Eagles will join MSU as a #14 seed.

          BIG TEN

Michigan failed to win 20 games (19-12) and finished with the #68 RPI ranking leaving the Big Ten with just 5 invites this season and no #1 seeds.

#2 Michigan State won the regular season title (15-3) to finish (25-8 Overall). The Spartans also finished #8 in both polls and have the #10 RPI ranking.

#2 Wisconsin won the conference tournament with a (60-52) win over #6 Oho State. The Badgers finished 26-7 Overall and are ranked #7 in both polls and have the #14 RPI, well the Buckeyes finish 22-11 Overall with the #30 RPI ranking, and are currently #19 in the Coaches Poll and #24 in the Top-25 Media.

          Joining them are #5 Illinois (23-7 Overall,#17 Coaches/#21 Media/#19 RPI) and #4 Indiana (24-8 Overall, #22 Coaches/#19 Media/#12 RPI)

          BIG 12
It was a down year in the Big 12 as only 3 teams secure invites to the Dance.
Kansas State shocked everyone winning the Big 12 regular season title going (11-5) to finish with a 21-11 Overall record and #38 RPI ranking), receiving at #10 seed.

Oklahoma State won the Big 12 title game defeating the Wildcats (87-84) to finish the year (24-9 Overall and with the #33 RPI Ranking ) they will be a #7 seed going into the tournament.

Joining them will be #11 Iowa State. The Cyclones finished just (19-11 Overall, but their #47 RPI Ranking boosted them off the bubble)

Not joining them this year in a shocker to many is 5 teams all finishing with 17 wins. Kansas (17-14), Texas (17-13), Texas A&M (17-12), Oklahoma (17-14) and Nebraska (17-15).

          BIG WEST
UC Santa Barbara won the regular season title going 13-3 on their way to a 20-8 Overall record, but it was the UC Riverside Highlanders who played spoiler winning the conference's auto bid and #14 seed. UCR finished the year at (18-13 Overall).

          COLONIAL

The Colonial has in year's past sent multiple teams to the Final 64, but not this year as #9 VCU the regular and tournament champs are traveling alone. The Rams (25-7 Overall/14-4 Conference) receive a #9 seed, well (21-11) Delaware and (19-10) George Mason's bubbles have been popped.

          CONFERENCE USA

#4 Southern Miss won both the regular season and conference tournament titles finishing (27-5 Overall and 12-4 in CUSA play). The Golden Eagles also finished the year in both poll's #13 Media and #21 Coaches with the #15 RPI ranking.

#5 Memphis also finished 12-4 in CUSA play, and secured 20+ wins going 21-7 Overall. The Tigers managed to stay in the Top-25 poll all season finishing #12 in the Coaches and #18 in the Media with the #22 RPI ranking.

          HORIZON

UW-Greenbay won the regular season title going (15-3) and managed 20 wins (20-7 Overall) but a loss in the semi finals of the conference tournament have the Phoenix, NIT bound.

The Butler Bulldogs will be making their 10th trip to the Dance as they pull off the upset win to secure the auto bid and #15 seed after a (17-14 Overall) season.

          IVY LEAGUE

Harvard and Cornell finished with a 11-3 Overall record in Conference play but it's the Big Red that's going to the Dance as a #14 seed, after going (18-9) this season.

          Metro Atlantic

The Siena Saints are going Dancing after winning both the regular season and conference tournament titles, finishing the year 22-11 Overall.

However they will be the lone-wolf from the Metro this year as both Saint Peter's (21-10 Overall/#55 RPI) and Marist (20-12,#73 RPI) are left with their bubbles popped.

          Mid-Atlantic

Toledo won the regular season title going 12-4, but manged just 5 wins outside the conference (17-14 Overall), so it's Western Michigan winner of the conference tournament who is going dancing with a #13 seed. The Broncos win over N. Illinois in the championship game gave them their 20th win of the year as (20-10) now the question is can they get to #21

          Mid-Eastern
Joining WMU as a #13 seed is Hampton. The Pirates winner of the regular season and conference title finished the year at (25-6 Overall).

          Missouri Valley
#13.. Yep Southern Illinois like Hampton are both the MVC regular season (13-5) and auto bid winners (75-73 winner over Bradley), but unlike Hampton SIU finished just 19-12 Overall leaving them to wonder just how will they fair against better competition.

          Mountain West
It was a a down year in the MWC. UNLV dominated the regular season title going 15-1, finishing the year 24-5 Overall as they secure a #7 seed with a #39 RPI ranking and spots in both Top-25 polls (#25 Media/#24 Coaches).

Colorado State however pulled off the upset come tournament play after going just 6-10 in conference play and finishing (15-19 Overall). The Rams gift, a #16 seed and matchup with #1 Cincinnati.

          Northeast
          C. Connecticut won the regular season going 13-5 and finished the year (21-11 Overall) and Mount St Mary's won 22 games (22-9) but neither will Dance and instead are NIT bound.

Instead it's Robert Morris (14-17) who won the chance to play in the (Play in Game) and potentially face #1 USC.

          Ohio Valley

Like so many other conference champs. Austin Peay (14-6 and 18-9 Overall) is left on the outside wondering what if, as they fail to secure the automatic bid.

Instead it's Tennessee State (19-11) who claims the #15 seed and a spot in the Final 64.

After winning last year's bid, under the direction of Coach Ryan, the Morehead Eagles finished just 10-10 in OVC play and 14-15 Overall.

          PAC-10

Talk about domination. This year 8 out of 10 Pac-10 teams are going dancing including the #1 Overall seed. USC won both the regular season title (15-3) and the conference championship (90-81 win over Washington) to finish the year as the #1 team in the RPI rankings. The Trojans are also #1 in the Top-25 Media Poll and #2 in the Coaches.

Washington's loss in the championship game saw them finish the year 1 win shy of 20 (19-13) but a #24 RPI ranking gets them a #8 seed.

UCLA (22-9), Arizona State (24-9) and Oregon (23-9) all secure #3 seeds, well Cal (22-9) will be a #4, Arizona (23-11) gets a #6 seed well Stanford (17-13) grabs bubble bid and #10 seed with their #26 RPI ranking.

          Patriot League

Army won the regular season title (12-2, 19-8 Overall) but it's Holy Cross that is Dancing. The (19-13) Crusaders won the auto bid and a #15 seed.

          Southeastern
The SEC finishes 2nd in having the most teams as 7 team make the Final 64, including regular season champs Vanderbilt and conference tournament champs Mississippi State.

MSU claims the final #1 seed as the Bulldogs finish (29-4 Overall). With a #4 Ranking in the Top-25 Media Poll, #5 ranking in the Coaches Poll and a #11 RPI ranking one has to wonder how far they can go. MSU has 1 Final 4 appearance in school history.

(25-7 Overall) Vandy and instate rival Tennessee (27-5 Overall) claim #2 seeds in the Dance. The Commordores finished the year #8 in RPI, #10 in the Media and #16 in the Coaches Poll's, well the Volunteers are #5 RPI and #3 in both the Coaches and Media Poll.

(21-8) Kentucky is in new water going in as a #5 seed. The wildcats are use to being #1 or #2 in most brackets and they will have a tough road to travel as they face a familar foe in Round 1 as they will face off against #12 South Carolina (19-12).

#10 Florida rounds out the field of 7, Despite a (19-13 Overall record) the Gators impressed the selection committee making it to the SEC championship game before losing to MSU and their #23 Coaches Poll ranking and #35 RPI ranking made them a strong bubble team.

          Southern

          W. Carolina won the regular season title going (16-4) and finished 22-7 Overall, but it's Davidson that secures the conference title that means the most as they claim a #15 seed. The Wildcats were just 8-12 in conference play but managed 10 non conference wins to finish (18-15).

          Southland
Stephen F Austin won the regular season title going 12-4 after just a 1-10 non conference start (13-14 Overall) but it was Nicholls State who secures a spot in the "Play in Game" after winning the auto bid as they go into tourney play at just (13-15 Overall)

          Southwestern

Alabama A&M lost just 1 conference game this season going (17-1) well finishing 23-9 Overall. For their efforts the Bulldogs received a #12 seed and their 4th trip in school history to the Big Dance

          Summit League

South Dakota State won the regular season title going (15-3) falling just 1 win shy of 20. (19-12), but it's IUPUI that is dancing as a #16 seed after the Jag's won the conference tournament finishing (15-14 Overall)

          Sun Belt

Western Kentucky continues the trend. The Hilltoppers won the the regular season title (12-4) and finished (21-12 Overall) but WKU's #128 RPI spelled doom as they will be NIT bound.

#13 FAU made their 20th win of the season (20-11 Overall) matter the most as they win the auto bid

          West Coast

Gonzaga's streak continues as the Bulldogs claim yet another WCC title going (11-3) and finishing (25-6 Overall). GU's #27 RPI ranking, #13 Coaches Poll Ranking and #20 Media Poll ranking was enough to make them a #5 seed in this year's Final 64.

          Western Athletic

          The WAC secures 3 teams!!!!

With Utah State's win in the conference tournament championship, they were a lock. As the Aggies receive a #11 seed after a (22-9 Overall season). However making conference history is the fact that both #9 La Tech (22-8 Overall) and #7 Boise State (22-8) are joining them.

The Bulldogs #36 RPI and 22 wins was enough to impress the Selection committee as was Boise State's #25 RPI ranking and similar 22-8 record.

BRONCOS SECURE #7 SEED IN WEST REGIONAL!!!

Boise State has played in 3 NCAA tournaments prior as #14 seeds in 1988,1992, and 1994. They have never won a game in the Field of 64, but in his first year at the helm Coach Ryan will look to make history.

The Broncos have never been a favorite to win, yet this Thursday in a matchup with #10 Kansas State they will look to start in new chapter in Bronco basketball.

            Coach Ryan
KSU is going to be a very tough opponent. They didn't win the Big 12 without being a very good team. JR SF Adama DeManby is one of the nation's best scorers (23.0 PPG), but I am excited about our chances.
Even if the Broncos happen to make history getting their first NCAA tournament win, it's unlikely they will advance much further as "W" would set them up with a 2nd Round matchup vs the winner of #2 Tennessee and #15 Butler.

In a interesting twist of seedings. Should BSU manage to trip to the Sweet 16, they could very well face #3 Arizona State, the only school in which KSU and BSU share as a common opponent this season.

Arizona State defeated Boise State (82-50) at home well beating Kansas State on the road (69-58)

                    PERFECT BRACKET NO MORE!!!

The Opening Round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament was full of excitement, buzzer beaters and upsets. The Day started out in dominating fashion as #1 USC cruised past Nicholas State (winner of the play in game) (93-45) in the East Regional, well fellow #1 seed Maryland easily dispatched #16 IUPUI (104-77) in the South.

Out West #1 Cincinnati had no problems beating #16 Colorado State (75-58) well #1 Mississippi State cruised passed #16 Vermont (72-59).

With all the #1's moving forward, that's when things got crazy as #7 Boise State got a huge surprise before tipping off against #10 Kansas State.

#15 Butler pulled off the biggest upset of the day beating #2 Tennessee (76-62), despite the Vols getting 30 points from PF J. Perry. The Bulldogs got a double double from 6'9 Forward B. Santiago (15 pts and 17 rebs) well also getting 20 points from SO SG O. Outlaw.

The Vol's were not the only higher seed to fall prey to this year's Cinderella Stories.

#3 Oregon fell to #14 Cornell in the East Bracket (69-55) and #12 Alabama A&M upsets #5 Illinois (79-69) as they hit 13/20 from 3pt.

In the Midwest Regional #10 Mercer defeated #7 Syracuse (105-98) after leading 63-56 in the 1st half. COACH RYAN MAKES HISTORY

The Broncos won the tip off and opened the game with a bucket to take the lead. Early foul trouble by Wildcat star A. Demanby (22.5 PPG this season, 20.9 PPG last season) would leave KSU scrambling for most of the 1st half, but the defense would hold as they held BSU to just 2/8 from 3pt trailing by just 3 points going into the half (41-38).

A early 3rd foul by Demanby again sent him to the bench and the Broncos this time would take advantage going on a 8-0 run to give Boise State a 12 point lead with most of the 2nd half. The Wildcats however would answer back late in the 2nd half with under 2 minutes to play as Demanby finally gets on the scoreboard scoring 3 straight buckets to trim the lead to 6. A basket by Strafford would make it a 8 point game with 1:21 to play, but Demanby again finds the hoop and after a turnover by the Broncos and a 3 pointer by A. Brempong the Wildcats were down by just 3 points with less then 14 seconds to play. With Kansas State's entire backcourt plus Demanby playing with 4 fouls, Kansas State would make their biggest mistake of the game waiting for the Broncos to run off 11 seconds before finally getting the intention foul called on C. Hannan who would step to the line to sink the first of 2 free throws to give BSU a 4 point lead with 3.2 seconds to play. Hannan would miss his 2nd FT attempt but the victory was sealed despite KSU's 3pt at the buzzer (which was called off anyways)FINAL SCORE BSU-85 KSU-81

                      KEY PLAYERS
Freshman K. Stafford was named POG as he lead the Broncos in points (24) and rebounds (8).

                      C. Hannan was huge off the bench as he scored a career high 13 points including 2/2 from deep and the game sealing F.T.

                      A. Bowman also added 10 points and 8 rebounds but his biggest contribution was drawing the early fouls on Demanby and getting him out of the game.

                      T. Moreno added 11 points and had 3 huge steals, well L. Andrew added 8 assists but scored just 5 points as he went 3/10 from the charity stripe.

                      J. Fischer added 9 points and 8 rebounds in his 6th man role.

With #15 Butler pulling off the biggest upset of the tournament can the Broncos possibly make it to the Sweet 16.. We won't have to wait long to find out.

                        BRONCOS ADVANCE TO SWEET 16!!!

The Butler Bulldogs Cinderella dreams are over, as Coach Ryan and the Broncos continue to put together the best season in Boise State history.

Trailing (35-31) at the half, Boise State would make a 8-0 run to start the 2nd half to give them a 4 point lead. Both teams would trade bucket for bucket for much of the 2nd half as the Broncos still lead by 4 with less then 2 minutes to play. Butler would hit a huge 3pt shot with 43 seconds to play to make it (61-60), but the Broncos answered back with a 3pt of their own as Wilkins connects on a wide open shot from the corner to make it (64-60). BSU would fall back on defense not wanting to give up the easy bucket and again forced Butler to shoot from deep and again the Bulldogs answered making it a 1 point game with 1.3 seconds on the clock. BSU would inbound and run out the clock though as they hold on. FINAL SCORE BSU-64 BUTLER-63

                        KEY PLAYERS
Wilkins take home POG honors as he scores a team high 15 points including 3/5 from 3pt in the 2nd half.

                        K. Stafford adds a double double in the win with 10 points and 10 rebounds but even more amazing is he has 6 huge blocks as he show cases to the nation his bid to being named the NCAA FOY.

                        T. Moreno (13 points) and J. Fischer (10 points) join them in the double digit column well A. Bowman grabs 10 huge boards to help Stafford on the glass.

Whose up for Boise State and who else made the trip to the Sweet 16? Stay tune to find out.

#10 Florida no stranger to Final 4 and National title showed why seeding #'s don't matter as they knock off #2 Michigan State (73-71) at the buzzer..

#6 Ohio State ended #14 Cornell's dream (90-57) to also advance, well #1 USC defeates #8 Arkansas (97-66) to also move on.

#4 Indiana makes some noise as they pass the century mark for the 2nd straight game beating #12 Alabama A&M 105-80. Can the Trojans slow down this potent offense??

#1 Cincinnati survives a buzzer beat to hold on and beat #8 Washington (74-73) as they will advance to play #5 Memphis who scores 100 in their win over CUSA rival #4 Southern Miss (100-80).

#3 Arizona State defeats #6 La Salle 68-56 as the Sun Devils will advance to face Boise State for the 2nd time this season. Can Boise State get it's revenge and prove they are Elite 8 material, or does the Bronco's story end here?

In the South Regional #1 Maryland cruised to a win over ACC rival #8 NC State (76-56) well #5 Gonzaga's dream of a Sweet 16 party was ended by #4 Charlotte (72-68).

#3 Duke and #6 Arizona combine for 18 of 34 3pt's as the Blue Devils make a huge 2nd half comeback (trailed 60-54) to beat the Wildcats 108-99.

After scoring 105 points in the opening round, nobody expected #10 Mercer to manage just 41 points but the Badgers defense was just to much as #2 Wisconsin cruises to victory (68-41). Can the Badgers do it again vs Duke? They will have to hope so if they want to be Elite 8.

Go Gators! Look at them win, seedings be damned. Good to see Tennessee lose, too.

And look at the Broncos squeaking out victories -- so many heart attacks. It's a great run so far, I think it will come crashing to an end in the Sweet 16. But we'll see.

Tennessee losing was huge for me. Butler was tough but I am like 99.9% certain I would've lost to the Vol's. There team is loaded with so many good shooters.

I honestly feel like had K-State's big time scorer not picked up those early fouls and spent most of the 1st half on the bench, I wouldn't have been able to hang with them either.

The Arizona State game has been played.. Results will most likely get posted tonight.
