Emmett 14 returns with a new college basketball saga (FBCB 2010)

It's the summer of 1969, in a universe that started in 1900. The rules:

Recruits can go pro straight out of high school.
    Transfers are eligible immediately.
    Zero academic suspensions.
    Injuries are doubled to 200%.

There are currently 426 teams in this league, many being added as the years went on and being dropped into one of 4 Independent conferences (N,S,E,W). All of the added teams are D-2 schools with a sprinkling of D-3 and NAIA when I thought it fit, and many of them have progressed to be parts of the actual conferences. There are far too many new teams and minor changes to detail, but here are the largest:

It is based off the alignment in 2010, before all the heavy shifting of 2012-2016.

    The biggest changes are that:

East Carolina is in the ACC.

The Big XII is still the Big XII from 1997-2010.

The Big East is still the giant 16 team conference, with a chance to add a 17th member at some point.

Illinois State is now a member of the Big Ten, and they have a strong basketball program and the 12 members of the league are divided west from east.

The Pac-12 is currently the Pac-11, with UNLV being a member in addition to the original 10. Another conference likely to expand at some point.

The SEC now has 14 teams, with Louisiana Tech and Memphis being members for a few decades now.

There are a couple of new conferences, the first is the Lone Star conference. It's completely made up of schools from Texas, a lot that were in the Southland, a few from the SWAC, and a few formerly independent schools as well. They have an automatic berth each season for the winner of their conference tournament. Currently, these are the members:

The other is just a few years old and is the Frontier conference. It's a conference designed for teams west of Texas. There are currently just 9 teams and they play just 8 conference games right now. I'll be adding teams every few years, and when they get 13-16 teams going, I'll give then automatic bid, but as of now, they don't.

As this crawls by, we'll come across other conferences and teams and I'll explain various changes that have happened over the almost 70 year history of the NCAA.

As far as the history of the league:

Here are the 35 teams that have won championships:

    Emmett 14's first coaching job

I co-opted the life of a computer generated coach, Dennis Henry, added a year to his age, changed his name to Emmett 14 and resigned from the post of assistant coach at Georgia Tech, and told the college basketball world that I'm available for hire.

My coach is 29 in his first season, and has the following ratings/history:

The coaching carousel begins and we get a grand total of 1 offer, which of course means we're taking it.

So, Boone, North Carolina it is:

I'll be the head coach of the Appalachian State Mountaineers. At first glance, it seems like an okay gig despite their 11-18 (5-11) season last year. They are loaded up on seniors this year, which means I should able to put my imprint on this team very quickly, and it also makes the first recruiting class a large and very, very important one.

Appalachian State is in the Southern Conference, and have been since all the way back in 1900:

There are quite a few teams in the Southern Conference, and most of them have a higher prestige than we do, so we'll have our work cut out for us right away.

Historically, Appalachian State has been very weak:

They've never made the NCAA tournament and that 34.6 rate at winning game is also one of the worst in history, in fact, if you take out the teams that were added post-1901 (who will always have horrible records their first few seasons), they have the 2nd worst winning percentage of any original squad. Ahead of just Longwood, who is at 33.4.

In addition to never making the NCAA tournament, they have one NIT appearance, 1 CBI appearance and one CI.com appearance. In 1964-65, they did make it all the way to the CBI finals before losing to Sam Houston State two games to one and in 1943-44, they won a game in the NIT before being knocked out in the 2nd round.

Their previous coach Elroy Fitzwater, retired at the age of 61 after just 3 years at the helm. He compiled a 41-76 record, so he's not leaving behind much of a legacy.

Below is last year's squad. Players in bold and highlighted are either graduating seniors or transfers:

Weber and Boehm were seniors and Reid was a freshman who was unhappy with lack of playing time. Reid was a tremendous defensive post, but had almost zero skills otherwise. So, not a huge loss. 6 scholarship juniors on last year's team, which means we have 6 players graduating this season, plus the extra scholarship freed up by the Reid transfer. We'll see if we can pick anyone up in transfer season, but even if we do we'll replacing a lot of personnel right off the bat.

      Assistant hiring period

I inherit a staff, but they are awful, and even at the barebones prices they are paying James Thomas, David LaRochelle and Chris Nilsson, I cut them all loose and will hire a brand new staff:

I soon find out why my staff was so horrible, as I have a very hard time replacing them with anyone decent with my very lackluster budget and it ends up becoming arguable to if I even improved my coaching staff any. But, here they are:

At least Favors has the one season with Mississippi State. The recruiting coordinator Whitfield is particularly bad, as we need some recruiting help this season, and not having a decent recruiter could have long term ramifications for my career. I'll be looking to replace him as soon as possible.

        Transfer Period

We have one scholarship to give in the transfer season, but as such a lowly team prestige wise we will be scraping from the bottom of the barrel. Plus, every year there is/are a new team(s) joining the NCAA that will soak up 20+ of them each offseason, and guys that we would potentially have a chance of getting at that.

The ideal is to find a senior to give that scholarship too, that way you can add a little more depth and take that scholarship into next season.
        .
        .
        .

And it flies by with just one player expressing an interest, a very bad point guard, and we'll take it into the summer to find new players.

Big guard who is aggressive and isn't afraid to take a shot. Handles the ball alright and can get away with playing the point. His problem is in his total lack of defensive ability. But, he's got experience and can score the ball so he'll likely keep his starting job.

Another big guard, he's got a tiny bit of defensive chops and offensively he isn't afraid to take a few shots. Could see an uptick in playing time as a senior.

A good athlete who can shoot the three pretty well, but isn't much more than a catch and shoot guy. Okay defender.

The star of the team. A guard who can really get to the hoop and will put up a lot of shots for us this season and is certainly a volume scorer. Just an okay passer, and is definitely more of a scoring guard. Does an okay job defensively, but that's not his role on this squad.

He's already disgruntled with his lack of playing time and hopefully another year of 6 minutes will cause him to jump ship next offseason. He's not very good, though he'll at least contribute a tiny bit offensively if he has to play.

Walk-on who has a nice jump shot.

Marion Bracey, 6'3", 182, Freshman, St. Henry, Ohio, 1*, #1103

Good athlete that can shoot the ball a little bit. As he develops he'll hold his own defensively. Raw right now, but could be a major contributor as a upper-classman.

David Flores, 6'4", 181, Freshman, Newland, North Carolina, 3*, #274

Very promising look freshman with some real ability defensively, including quick hands that should get him some steals. Offensively, he's a good shooter, but lacks the handle or driving game to be much more than that.

Levi Gattis, 6'6", 228, Freshman, Charlotte, North Carolina, 1*, #1384

Walk-on with some legitimate offensive talent, but is a pitiful defender in every way.

Has played a lot of minutes and is listed as a SF, but I see him playing more of a 4/3 role for me this year. He doesn't have a lot of skills, and is just decent at everything. But, since he can rebound pretty well, he'll do okay at the 4, I think.

Started last year and had a productive sophomore year. Does a really good job on the glass, and scores around the basket pretty well. Another poor defender in the post, but is ability to threaten for a double-double each game will keep him in the lineup.

Pretty good defender with the ability to block shots. Offensively and on the glass he isn't much, but there is still some room for him to improve. I like defensive players, so he'll likely carve out a spot in the rotation this year.

Doesn't provide a lot more than post depth. But is big and strong and can do a few things defensively and on the glass.

Played in 2 games last year as a walk-on freshman and I made the decision to give him a scholarship. Maybe it's cheating as other teams can't do that, but it's done, so whatever. He's got some real talent, and I think he'll play this year. Does an okay job defensively, helps out on the glass and has a legit offensive game.

6 scholarships to give, the division I'd like is 4 perimeter players and 2 post players and a couple of point guards scattered in there.

Pretty promising start with two guys signing on before my coaching career even tipped off. Lost out on a very good looking guard to Coastal Carolina and have had the usual incidents of guys being swept off by mid-major and high-major offers. The post situation is looking like it'll be a couple of JUCO's most likely, and I would like to add a JUCO point guard as well. Anyways, enough rambling; the two recruits we've got to commit.

My scout really likes his ability to score the ball and with his high handle rating, he should be able to be a primary ball handler without too much issue. Defensively, he looks pretty sorry, but he's coming to Boone, NC, to score the ball, not to defend.

Another guy who isn't afraid to shoot it, but this one plays point. Not much of a defender either, but can shoot the ball well and is an actual true point guard.

There's a JUCO center I feel pretty good about getting and one more high school guard who seems likely to sign with us soon. We'll keep looking for JUCO perimeter help as the season goes along.

                  1969-1970 Game 1 Preview

We're going to go with a lineup of:

                  G: Michael Serrano, Senior
                  G: Milford Bartell, Senior
                  G: Kevin Nason, Senior
                  PF: Dave Bass, Senior
                  C: Douglas Ramage, Junior

                  As for our first opponent!

November 17th, 1969 vs Delaware State Hornets

                  Conference: Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
                  Location: Dover, Delaware
                  1968-1969 record: 15-16 (8-8)

Delaware State is an 8 prestige team which makes them one of the few teams in the nation that is both in an automatic bid conference and has a lower prestige than we do.

Delaware State at least has a couple of NCAA tournament appearances that they can hold over us, in 1905 and 1928.

                  As for the Hornets' squad:

PG: Amin, 6'0", Junior: Played 16 minutes a game last year and averaged 8 points. Has offensive skill and isn't afraid to shoot and should do a decent job at the point this season. Poor defender.

SG: Arrington, 6'1", Senior: Started last year and averaged 8 points, 3.5 boards and 2.2 assists. Solid defender who will grab some steals as well. Lackluster offensively, but a decent combo guard for the MEAC.

SF: Stringer, 6'4", Junior: Started last year and averaged 10.6 and 5.1 rebounds. Good offensive player who can score from multiple levels.

PF: Hertel, 6'8", Junior: Started 5 games last year and averaged 6.6 points and 3.7 boards in 16.7 minutes. Has offensive talent inside and contribute on the glass, but his defense holds him back, but he should put up something like 10 and 6 this year.

C: Webb, 6'10", Senior: Started last year and averaged 15 and 6. Another solid post scorer who gets on the offensive glass and another poor defender.

Bench: Davis is a 6'0" sophomore guard who can shoot the three and play a little point. Mitchell started last year and averaged 6.7 points, and is a really lackluster player, and deserved to lose his starting spot. 6'7" Villareal looks like their main backup post, he does a good job on the glass, but that's all. Angeles is a freshman 4/3 hybrid who look like he should be solid eventually, but probably won't play much this year.

Coach: Michel Fouts, 50 years old, 133-265 career record, 13th season at Delaware State.

Solid recruiter and defensive coach who probably needs to be manually removed. A flaw of FBCB is that low prestige teams hardly every fire their coaches because their expectations are so low.

                    1969-1970 Game 1 Results

We start out in 1-3-1 zone, which will probably be our primary defense this season, although we might sprinkle in a little bit of man.

Serrano, who I plan on being the star of this year's squad, picks up two early fouls and now will sit for most of the 1st half. At the first media timeout of the season, we 13-14 with 14:28 left. Bass has taken nicely to his new gig as a power forward and has 7 points and 4 boards to start the game and season.

Amin for the Hornets nails a three with 9:46 left to cut our lead to 22-21 and I call timeout. Stringer has 10 for the Hornets, while Bass still leads us with 7 and McLoughlin has 5 off the bench including a 3. Serrano is coming back in with 2 fouls to replace Bartell who also has 2.

Suddenly with 3:55 left in the 1st half, we trail 28-34 as our offense has gone cold and the combo of Webb and Hertel are beating up on us a bit.

We make a little run before half and the score at intermission is Delaware State 38 - Appalachian State 35. Serrano picked up his 4th foul on a charge call with about 3 minutes left because I didn't realize he picked up his 3rd just moments before, and his first game of his senior season isn't going so great. He'll start the 2nd half on the bench. The story is McLoughin who has 12 points and 5 boards, and might be our starting center before too long if this indicates anything.

Bass goes down with an injury with 15:57 left and we trail 40-43. Bass won't return this game and hopefully he's not out long.

Serrano comes in for a few minutes and then he gets injured, and things are looking dire if he's out for an extended time. We trail 40-44 with 12:37 left.

But, with 4:48 left, we cut the lead to 57-61 and force the Hornets to call timeout. We've finally settled in offensively a little bit even though McLoughlin is still stuck at 12 and 7. Ramage is up to 10 points and 5 boards and the freshman Flores has 6 points off the bench in the 2nd half.

Bartell gets a steal and a layup on the other end to tie it all up at 62 with 2:59 left.

We trade baskets, then trade a couple of misses a piece before Flores hits a shot from the win with 53 seconds left to give us the lead 66-64. Now to play defense:

They miss a 3 and McLoughlin snags a board and they immediately foul him. We're in the double bonus and he sinks both. 4 point lead with 26 seconds left.

Their reserve guard Davis hits a 3 in just two seconds to cut our lead to 1, 67-68 with 24 seconds left. I call timeout to settle us in.

Bartell is fouled and he's a very good free throw shooter and he proves it by hitting both, putting us up 70-67 with 19 seconds left.

We switch to man for the next possession, but isn't needed as Amin gets called for travelling and its our ball again.

They foul Bartell again and he repeats his performance and that's all we need for the victory. Final score: Appalachian State 72 - Delaware State 67. Always nice to win the first game and really nice to win the first game in my coaching career. McLoughlin finished with a double double, with 14 and 10, while Ramage ended up with 10 and 6. Bartell struggled from the field but redeemed himself at the free throw line. Unfortunately, both injuries we suffered in the 1st game are pretty big ones, with both Bass and Serrano out for more than a month with a concussion and broken foot respectively. Major losses for our team, and it really hurts our ability to score. Oh, well.

Mercer is a 35 prestige school, who has been a middling program since the beginning in the Atlantic Sun. 4 NCAA appearances in school history, the last two coming in back to back seasons in 1957 and 58, both resulting in first round losses.

The Bears are 1-0 on the season with a 87-75 victory over Sacred Heart to open their season.

PG: O'Brien, 5'9", Freshman: Good looking young player who had a very nice first collegiate game, 16 points, 5 boards and 5 assists. He's very developed for a freshman and will be a nice 4 year player for his league.

SG: Queen, 6'2", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 15 a game last year on decent percentages. Good defender, but looks pretty inconsistent offensively.

SF: Nolen, 6'6", Senior: Started last year and averaged 10 points and 5.5 rebounds. Versatile defender who does most of his damage inside, but shot a solid 28-71 from three last year.

PF: Holt, 6'7", Senior: Started 11 games in an injury shortened season last year, putting up 7 and 7. Has talent inside that he's yet to exploit and is a menace on the offensive glass.

C: Williams, 6'8", Senior: 4 year starter, averaged 15 and 7 last year to go with 2 assists. Strong offensive big man with a lot of talent, and he's developed the point that he's solid enough defensively and on the glass.

Bench: Copeland is a productive big man, but a bit undersized at 6'7". Peiffer is an excellent catch and shoot guard that does little else. Delacruz is a talented sophomore big man who needs playing time, but probably isn't going to get it this year. McAuley is a 5% worse version of Peiffer.

Coach: Marcos Thomas, 55 years old. 177-144 career record, 5th season at Mercer.

Excellent scout and offensive coach who really struggled with the other aspects of his job. But, after spending 6 seasons at Southern Conference foe Valdosta State, and doing a good job there, he's struggled to get his footing at Mercer, and another lackluster or season or two could mean the end for Thomas at Mercer.

We're missing two starters this game, Bass and Serrano, and replacing them will be McLoughlin and Florio respectively. So the lineup going into game two now looks like:

                      G: Bartell, senior
                      G: Florio, senior
                      G: Nason, senior
                      F: Ramage, junior
                      C: McLoughlin, senior

                        1969-1970 Game 2 Results

We get out to a nice 7-2 start, but by the first media timeout at 15:53, our lead is just 7-6. Bartell has an early three and Florio has been active with a steal and a layup plus 3 boards.

McLoughin nails a 3 with 13:09 left and forces Mercer to call timeout with our lead 19-10. Bartell has 7 and Florio now has 5 points, 4 boards and 2 assists in the senior's first collegiate start.

A problem we're going to have with the injury to Serrano is the lack of a backup point guard when Bartell needs a rest, a good example is the nice run Mercer goes on with Reid Florio playing point, and I call a timeout to get Bartell back in the game with 4:41 left, and our lead now just 32-28. Bartell has 10 points to go with 2 assists.

By halftime we've regrouped a little bit and lead by the score of Appalachian State 39 - Mercer 34. Bartell leads us with 11, but a lot of guys are contributing, everyone in the starting lineup has at least 5 points. The freshman Flores hit a couple of shots off the bench and has been impressive in his first few games.

We have 3 turnovers in the first 3 minutes of the second half, all unforced, and I call timeout to settle us down before the situation gets worse than a 39 all tie with 17:16 left.

Bartell gets called for a charge, his 3rd foul, with 13:26 left, and we lead 51-50. It's basically turned into a shoot off between our Nason and their Queen. Nason suddenly has 14 points to go along with his 5 boards and 3 assists, while Mercer's Queen is up to 19 points.

With 7:09 left the clock stops after McLoughlin chucks it out of bounds on a bad pass and we lead 58-57. Mercer keeps firing up threes and every once in a while they hit one, Williams, their solid big man has 13 points, 10 boards and 4 assists. Nason still as 14 while Bartell has crept up to 13 points on 14 shots.

Bartell gets fouled on a 3 point shot and makes all 3, before turning around and hitting a real three, and before you know it Mercer is calling a timeout with 4:52 left because we lead 64-59. Bartell is quickly up to 19 points.

But, Mercer responds with a 5-0 run and at the last media timeout with 3:18 left, we lead 64-63.

Mercer completes a 3 point play to take the lead and then Florio gets fouled on a 3 point shot and makes 2 of 3 and with 2:06 left it's all tied at 66.

Nason gets fouled and knocks down a couple of free throws before Bartell gets called for his 4th foul and sends Queen to the stripe for a one and one, and he misses the first and we get the ball back, up 2 with 1:02 left.

Flores, the freshman, is fouled and knocks down both free throws to increase our lead to 4, with 41 seconds left.

Mercer hits a 3, but it's sandwiched by a lot of free throws by the good guys and when the final buzzer sounds and the smoke clears, the final score is Appalachian State 76 - Mercer 69. At this quality of conference and team, any road win in non-conference play is a good one. Bartell finishes with 19 points, while Nason was right behind him with 18. McLoughlin and Ramage combined for 19 points and 16 boards. Florio filled the box score with 9 points, 7 boards, 3 assists and two steals.

                        The box score:

November 26th, 1969 vs North Carolina Central Eagles (0-1)
                          Conference: Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
                          Location: Durham, North Carolina
                          1968-1969 record: 9-21 (5-11)

North Carolina Central (NCCU) is a 17 prestige team, that has been in the MEAC since the NCAA's inception way back in 1900. From 1924 through 1942, they were a legitimate low-major power, getting up to 44 prestige at one point, which is a very high number for the MEAC, in that stretch of time they made 10 NCAA tournaments, including getting a sweet sixteen birth in 1942-43 to cap off of a 25-11 (13-3) season. They've had small spurts of success since, but are currently on one of their worst stretches in program history. Their current 17 prestige is as low as its been since 1923.

They are 0-1 on the season, taking a home loss to Wagner, 67-48 to start their 1969-70 campaign.

PG: Almazan, 6'4", Senior: 4 year start who averaged 16 points and 3 assists a game last year. Big guard who does a solid job as a lead guard even if he won't average more than 3 or 4 assists. Does a good job scoring and has been an efficient player in his first 3 years.

SG: Fisher, 6'3", Senior: Started last year and averaged 9 points a game. Very good defender who has some ability offensively, but normally doesn't take a ton of shots.

SF: Wilson, 6'6", Freshman: Talented offensive freshman who already should threaten for double figures. He's a disaster everywhere else, which explains why he's in the MEAC. He'll be a beast in that league eventually, though.

PF: Curcio, 6'9", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 6.5 and 7. Aggressive post who will get on the offensive glass and cause problems, just average elsewhere.

C: Rice, 7'0", Senior: Started last year and averaged 8 and 8. Good rebounder with an offensive game that is finally taking shape a little bit as a senior. Provides good size for the Eagles.

Bench: Belle is a strong offensive guard that provides punch off the bench. Brogan and Fuentes will play a bit off the bench on the perimeter, but neither is that impressive, which will assure one of them goes off in this game. Trantham is their main post depth and besides being a strong rebounder, the undersized 6'7" post doesn't provide much.

Coach: Efrain Polito, 50 years old. 79-98 career record. 6th season at NCCU.

Polito is a very solid scout and average coach that probably is over his head as a lead man. NCCU has too proud of history to put up with much and one more bad season for Polito will probably be the end of his time as the head man in Durham.

Our RPI is currently 9, well-deserved no doubt. Too bad the season didn't end yesterday. NCCU has some talent and a nice starting lineup, but once you get into their bench, especially in the post, they aren't much. We aren't much either, but at least we have a little bit of depth, even with the injuries, that can hold their own.

The first media timeout is at 14:29 and we trail 11-13, Wilson has 7 for the Eagles already, while Bartell leads us with 5. Florio picked up two quick fouls, which means Flores is about to get some major minutes this half.

Nason has two fouls as well now, and with 10:50 we trail 13-18.
Bartell is taking a quick breather, which means we are playing without anything resembling a true point guard out there.

With 7:31 left, we've maintained despite our offensive struggles and trail 15-20. Neither team is hitting shots and both are below 30%, the problem is that I have 6 turnovers to NCCU's 1.

We were on the verge of losing control of the game with an extended offensive drought, trailing by as much as 19-31, but Bartell single handedly went on an 8-0 run right before half and at intermission the score is North Carolina Central 31 - Appalachian State 27. If we end up winning this game, that little 90 second stretch will be super important. He has 13 points now. Wilson has 11 for NCCU and Curcio has 10 and 7, most of them being offensive rebounds and put backs.

At the first media timeout we trail by just one, 37-38, and there is 15:32 on the clock. Nason has a couple of threes, but he and Florio have both picked up their third fouls.

NCCU has been ice cold in the second half, and we've only been slightly warmer, but it has been enough to take the lead 42-38 with 12:44 left. Bartell is up to 19 points, and Nason has his third triple of the half and is up to 11. Ramage has 11 boards and McLoughlin 12.

We get a one man 4-0 run by Woodworth among a few other made shots and with 6:20, we're on the verge of taking over the game, leading 54-45. Our starting lineup is back in the game and hopefully will be able to see this one all the way to the end.

We turn the ball over with 3:52 and it signals the last media timeout and we lead 57-49. We're going to go into use clock mode and try to use up as much time as possible and hopefully limit the unforced turnovers as we do it.

We lead 59-53 with 1:49 left and then go into foul mode, Bartell is the first guy they foul which is very good for us. He sinks the front end of the 1-and-1, and then the other and we lead 61-53.

They miss a three that would have cut the lead to two with about 40 seconds left, McLoughlin grabs his 16th rebound and gets fouled immediately and then sinks both to give us a 7 point lead with 20 seconds left, 63-56, which should just about do it.

And it does, we end up on top with the victory and a 3-0 record with the final score of Appalachian State 65 - North Carolina Central 59. We survived a rough start, trailing by as many as 13 in the 1st half. Our zone defense really was effective against NCCU, causing them to go 5-25 from beyond the arc. Bartell was a star with 25 points, while our interior players were excellent on the board, our starting posts combining for 30 rebounds. Considering the two injuries to our starters, I'm really impressed by our 3-0 start, but I know FBCB can be fickle and I'm trying not to get too optimistic.

November 30th at NJIT Highlanders (2-1)
                              Conference: America East
                              Location: Newark, New Jersey
                              1968-1969 record: 14-16 (6-12)

NJIT has been in the America East from the beginning and besides a pretty good stretch from 1925-1932, they haven't had much of a history. Although, they did go from 2 wins in 1924-25 to 23 the next season, which has to be one of, if not the, biggest season to season jump in NCAA history. They've got 4 NCAA appearances and zero wins, their last appearance was 1961-62.

This is NJIT's first home game of the year, after starting off with three road games, their only loss a close one at Fordham. They are at almost 90 points a game and are shooting the highest percentage in the nation. So a good start for them.

PG: Degrimaupont, 6'0", Senior: Started last year and averaged 8 points and 3.3 assists. He's a very good passer and his 7 assists a game right now isn't too far off what he's capable of. Not much of a scorer, and he's shooting way over his head right now. The Frenchman is a horror show defensively.

SG: Rodriguez, 6'2", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 10.3 points as a freshman. Solid offensive guard who has put up good passing numbers the last two years despite lackluster ratings.

SF: England, 6'6", Sophomore: Played 14 minutes a game last year and scored 4 points a game. Gets to the basket, and does an okay job defensively, another guy with way more assists than his ratings say he should have. Guess it just comes from them hitting such a high percentage of their shots in their first 3 games.

PF: Brown, 6'9", Junior: Started last year and averaged 15 and 7. Their stud inside who is very efficient inside and does an okay job elsewhere. He's shooting 70% so far which will fall off, so his 23.7 ppg average right now is a bit inflated.

C: Shiflett, 6'8", Sophomore: Played 14 minutes a game last year and averaged 3 and 3. Competent big man with no real weaknesses, and will be a solid player in a few years for his league.

Bench: Corey is a 5'9" backup point guard who is aggressive and does a good job off the bench. Another senior guard, the 6'3" Fraley will play offt the bench and is a threat to hit a few from three, but little else. They have very weak post depth with a lot of stinkers on the bench. Hopefully we can exploit that.

Robert Tinker, 48 years old. 96-123 career record. 8th season at NJIT.

Solid recruiter and defensive coach, who prior to last season had back to back 12-6 conference records. Good enough to coach at a higher level than NJIT.

Their offensive start can't be sustained, but hopefully it doesn't carry on through this game. If we can get into their post depth I think we have a good chance, but if we don't, we could struggle to beat them at their place. Have to think about doubling Brown inside.
