Re: Emmett 14 returns with a new college basketball saga (FBCB 2010)

We've had a week off, so Flores is back to 100% and Ramage will be back in 3 weeks. As mentioned in the last post, we'll start off in man defense and see how it goes.

First media time out is at 14:47 and we trail 2-5. We're a cool 1-7 from the field and have 2 turnovers to boot. Bartell has our only basket on a tip in. McLoughlin picked up his 2nd foul and will sit for a while.

With 7:04 left, we trail 6-11. Bass has 4 points and now you're all caught up on the scoring. We are 3-17 from the field. Luckily our opponent has been nearly as incompetent as us offensively.

Serrano and Nason finally get the lid off a bit and each hit a three for a 6-0 run that makes The Citadel call timeout and gets us within 13-14 with 3:42 left.

They hit a three at half time, but we have a great stretch to end the 1st half and thanks to Serrano (8 points), Bass (8 points, 5 rebounds) and Nason (7 points, 4 rebounds), we have the lead at half time with the score of Appalachian State 25 - The Citadel 19. No great shakes to be sure, but after the horrific offensive start it's nice to see some life. We're up to 37% from the field. The Citadel is at 25%%, and Bishop only has 5 points. Bartell picked up a 2nd foul with about 7 minutes left in the 1st half, but I think we did better without him.

First media timeout at 15:39 and we now lead 35-25. Nason has 13 points, and Serrano is in double figures with him, with 10.

Nason has blown up, and given us even more separation. He has 21 points and we lead 43-27 with 10:09 left. We're above 40% from the field finally after such a horrible start. The Citadel is at 28%. We switched to zone right before half and it has worked very well.

Flores goes down with another injury and won't return with 8:40 left, our lead 45-31.

3:22 left and we've got it all under control. We lead 54-39. Sanders who has done basically nothing in his 57 minutes of playing time up to this point, went on a nice spurt and had all of his 4 points and 3 boards in about 45 seconds.

Considering we had 6 points total with 6:23 left in the 1st half, we had a pretty successful game, it even looks aesthetically pleasing: Appalachian State 60 - The Citadel 42. Nason had an insanely hot stretch early in the 2nd half, and finishes with 21 and 6. McLoughlin didn't take a shot but grabbed 10 boards. Serrano and Bartell combined for 21. Flores' injury is a pretty major one, two months, and it means his season is pretty well done barring a deep tournament run somewhere. The freshman is averaging 4 points and 2 boards in 18 minutes a game.

They gave us a really close game last time even though they completely lack talent outside of their starting backcourt of Alexander and Rieger. They did pick up a major upset with a road win against Valdosta State, who looks to be one of the more talented teams in the league this season.

Flores is out, and adding that to the Florio injury means our backcourt depth suddenly is pretty weak. Bracey, the freshman guard, will see a big uptick in playing time from here on out. He shoots the ball well and at least does a non-embarrassing job defensively. It'll be audition for next year too, when he'll have to compete against 4 new guards for playing time.

        1969-1970 Game 18 Results

We continue to get off to bad starts offensively, and the first media timeout comes after McLoughlin's 2nd foul with 15:24 left, and we trail 3-8. Bartell has a basket and Serrano split a couple of free throws from the line. Rieger for UNCG has 2 fouls as well.

I call timeout with 10:11 left, and we trail 9-18. UNCG is 7-10 from the field, and we're 4-13. Nason has 2 fouls now.

We go on a 7-0 run after the timeout and UNCG has to call a timeout of their own with 7:36 left and we trail 16-18. Bartell had a three pointer in the midst of it all. UNCG has 6 turnovers, but we've had 2 blown layups come out of them.

Last media time out is at 3:51, and we lead 22-21. It looks like Sanders might be breaking out finally, he's got 5 points in this one so far, after 8 in the last one.

At half, it's all tied up. Appalachian State 25 - UNC Greensboro 25. We recovered from another horrible start, but the last 3 minutes of the 1st half were not very good and we missed a lot of shots. Bartell leads us with 6 points, and he never came out in the 1st half, with Nason's foul problems. Serrano played 19 minutes.

First play of the second half, Bass gets injured, but luckily it isn't serious and he can still play. I bring Woodworth in anyways, though. The first media timeout is at 15:18 and we lead 37-36. Both teams have come out hot and Serrano is up to 12 and Bartell is right behind him with 10. Nason did pick up his 3rd foul and is going to come out for just a few minutes.

McLoughlin hits a 3, just his 6th of the year, and UNCG calls timeout with 10:47 left, and we lead 47-42. Serrano is now at 17, including sinking all three free throws after being fouled on a shot from beyond the arc.

With 7:26 left, we lead 57-49. Serrano is up 20 on 17 shots. Bartell got an extended breather, there was a very long period with no play stoppage. But, he's back in for the remainder of the game (although he does have 3 fouls).

Nason fouls out with 1:59 left, and we lead 66-57. Serrano is up to 25, but I've failed to mention Bracey who has 9 rebounds off the bench, his career high was 4 up to this point. He will eventually be a decent rebounder for a guard, but 9 as a freshman is pretty unlikely to happen again.

We screw around the last minute and turn it over and miss some free throws, and UNCG hits a few threes, to keep getting close enough that the AI would foul automatically. Anyways, we win, final score: Appalachian State 75 - UNC Greensboro 68 Serrano ended up with 26 and Bartell with a very sneaky 20 as he was the beneficiary of a lot of those foul shots at the end. Bracey managed to get his 10th rebound, while Woodworth somehow played 29 minutes with 0 shots attempted from the field. Closer than I was hoping against a bad team, but a win, like always, is a win.

          1969-1970 Game 19

          January 24th, 1970 vs Valodsta State Blazers (13-5) [4-1]
          Conference: Southern
          Location: Valdosta, Georgia
1968-69 record: 20-14 (12-4), lost in the 3rd round of the CI.com tournament

Valdosta State is a 34 prestige team, the second highest in our conference right now behind Wofford, and Valdosta might jump ahead of them by next season with the way each school's season is going right now. Valdosta has been excellent the last 20 years, they haven't been under .500 in conference since 1950-51. They've made 3 NCAA tournaments in that span, and have had success. Made the 2nd round two years ago and made it all the way to the Sweet Sixteen in 1955-56. They even made it as an at-large in 1963-64, where they lost in a play-in game.

Their only loss in conference was at home to a very bad UNCG team, Valdosta State had 30 team fouls in that game, and UNCG basically won by hitting a bunch of free throws. But, if they played that game 100 times, I think Valdosta wins 85+ of them.

PG: Cannady, 6'0", Senior: Played 2 games, 30 minutes total last year before going down with an injury. Solid guard, who has shot the ball well this year and is very good from the free throw line. Okay passer, not much defensively.

SG: McLaughlin, 6'5", Senior: Started last year and averaged 12 points a game. Really good outside shooter, who could probably stand to shoot it more. Handles the ball well, and creates for others even though his ratings don't say he should. Good athlete and just barely okay defensively.

SF: Case, 6'5", Freshman: Having a very productive freshman year, and better than his ratings say he should be. Handles the ball, and is aggressive and can do a little bit of everything offensively. Jumps out of the gym, but can't defend.
PF: Pailey, 6'9", Junior: Started last year and averaged 14.8 and 5.5. Down a bit this year, but can certainly score inside, and holds his down defensively and will block a shot or two.

C: Paul, 6'11", Senior: 3 year starter. Averaged 8 and 10 last year. Excellent rebounder, gets 3 offensive boards a game. His offensive has slowly improve and he's now got a nice touch inside and is just .5 points away from averaging a double this season. He's got 8 of them already this season.

Bench: White is a 6'1" guard who started last year as a freshman and scored just under 10 points a game. He's not too far off that average this year but in way fewer minutes. He's a really good shooter, but can't play point, and at his size that has hurt him. But, still a great guard to bring off the bench. John is a 5'9" senior who can really shoot it. Their main post reserve is the 7'1" Tinker who has a lot of offensive talent and not much defensive chops. Another giant, the 6'11", 303 lbs Cole will play 6 minutes a game and be big and maybe score a basket.

Coach: Jason March, 41 years old. 13-5 career record. 1st season at Valdosta State.

A good floor coach, especially defensively. His recruiting and scouting leave a lot to be desired. But, he's inherited enough talent to start and a solid program, so he should probably get off to a good start. He spent 4 years at Auburn and one at UAB as an assistant before snagging the Valdosta job. Could be a quick riser.

Even with their horrible home loss to UNCG, this is easily the most talented team we've faced so far in conference play and one that we might struggle with. Bass is a little banged up, but he'll start at the 4.

            1969-1970 Game 19 Results

The second media time out is at 11:37 and we lead 16-11. Both teams got off to very slow starts, less than 10 points combined more than 5 minutes in. But, soon we started hitting some threes, Bartell has two by himself. McLoughlin is going to have his hands full with keeping Paul off the glass.

Last media time out of the half (sorry for the lack of updates) is at 3:46 in the 1st half and we lead 27-20. Very balanced scoring by us, Bartell, Nason and Bass all have 6 points. Valdosta State is really struggling to score the ball. Our field goal percentage is 33%, same as theirs, despite being 6/11 from three. McLoughlin and Bass now have two fouls, though.

Nason and Bartell go nuts the last few minutes and at half time the score is Appalachian State 40 - Valdosta State 22. Nason has 12 and Bartell 11, and our perimeter guys are tearing them up. We'll slow the pace down some in the second half, since I don't see this maintaining, and I'd like to milk the clock some when we have an 18 point lead against a good team.

It's actually turned into a blowout, with 11:21 left we lead 55-29. Nason has 19 points, Bartell 13. But, it's our zone defense that is stymieing the Blazers and holding them to just 28% from the field.

A foul called at 4:07, right before the last media timeout, and we lead 73-38. Really pretty preposterous. If the reverse were happening to me, I'd be pissed about the game engine screwing me over, so I'll have to keep this in mind the next time I'm getting blown out by a team that shouldn't be. Al the starters are out and the reserves and walk-ons will see some time.

Our backups and walk-ons don't fare too well, though Andy Younger hit a three pointer. Our best win of the year, and it's really not even that close when you look at the quality of opponent and margin of victory. Final score: Appalachian State 78 - Valdosta State 48. Even if we had only won by 1 point, it would have been our best win of the season. We go 14-30 from beyond the arc, and 14 of Nason's 17 shots were three point attempts. McLoughlin and Bass both did a good job inside against the Blazer's Paul. Bracey again did a good job on the glass, with 7 rebounds from the guard position in 14 minutes. I fully expect a total dud of a performance next game out. We're now 11-8 (5-2) and are on a 3 game winning streak and we still have Ramage coming back from injury soon.

Wofford is on a 3 game losing streak, and have only been competitive in one of them. They've got a very young backcourt with SO Patterson (10.6 ppg) and FR Morelock (18 ppg), and neither of them play defense. Both of their post players are in double figures, but my post guys have done a pretty good job this year, and I think Serrano, Nason and Bartell can score on their perimeter players. But, if Morelock gets hot and we shoot poorly like we're very capable, we could easily lose this one.

                1969-1970 Game 20 Results

It was all tied at 9 before back to back to back three point possessions by the Terriers and with 15:50 left, we trial 9-18. Morelock has 8 quick points for Wofford. Serrano leads us with 5.

Media timeout at 10:21 and we trail 22-29. We're just barely hanging in there as we are hitting enough threes to keep it close. Serrano has 7 points, but also 2 fouls, though he's about to come back into the game.

6:55 left, and we trail 33-40. Serrano survived his 3 minutes and is back on the bench for now, he scored 7 points while he was in there though, and I'll be bring him back in a few minutes, even with the two fouls. Patterson and Morelock have combined for 23 points for the Terriers and the two young guards are tearing us up.

I can't look at other team's box scores until after the game is over, so I don't know how many threes that Wofford has it, but it's been a lot. They are at 50% and they are shellacking me. Wofford 59 - Appalachian State 41. Morelock has 23 for the Terriers, and we've done pretty well offensively overall, but our zone defense went from being excellent against Valdosta State to horrible against Wofford. Such is basketball. They've been destroying us on the glass too, which hasn't helped things.

14:46 left in the 1st half, we trail 51-67 and Serrano has 4 fouls now, and 14 points. But, he'll be sitting for the next 5 or 6 minutes. Nason is up to 11, Bartell has 8 points and 5 assists.

Serrano fouls out with 7:50 left, and we trail 63-81. Morelock has just 3 in the second half, it's been Archambault with quite a few baskets in the second half and 16 points and 7 boards total that has done most of the damage for the Terriers in the 2nd half.

One small success on the game, we manage to keep below 100, and we lose by the score of Wofford 99 - Appalachian State 76. The complete inverse of last game, as our zone (and man the few possessions we tried it) was horrible. Their guards tore us to pieces, and while we had an okay game offensively, it wasn't nearly enough to overcome the Terrier swarm. Morelock and Patterson are going to be a problem in a few years, heck they already are.

They are really pretty similar to Wofford, but a bit more experienced. Rutherford has been a great wing man (12.9 ppg) to their stud Matlock (18.0 ppg). Morozov at 7'1" is averaging 12 points and 7 rebounds and McLoughlin will have his hands full yet again, hopefully it goes better than last game.

Chattanooga finally took a loss in conference play, falling on the road to Davidson. Valdosta State up there at 5-2, it's still amazing we beat them so badly.

Ramage could play theoretically, but he's still just barely above the 75% threshold, so hopefully we can hold him back until next week. After the 5'11" Rutherford dunks it on us out of the half court in the first possession, we hit 3 straight from beyond the arc, two by Nason and one by Bass. Samford calls time and we lead 9-2 with 17:56 left.

Samford gets three attempts at a three point shot and finally connects on the 3rd one, and it gives them the lead 15-16 and I call timeout with 10:15. After such a hot start, we've been ice cold from the field the last 5 minutes.

Nason had been sitting the last 3 minutes of our cold spell, came in and of course immediately hits a three and then forces a 5 second violation on the next defensive possession, a rule that no longer exists. He then picks up his 2nd foul not too long after and is back on the bench. Eventually, with 3:20 left, we lead 32-30. Nason has 12 points in 10 minutes, and I'm hoping to keep him on the bench the last bit of the half. Bartell is 7-8 from the line and has 9 points total. Bass played 3 or 4 minutes at SF, some of his first time there all season, that's where the AI would start him if they were in charge.

At half, we trail by the score of Samford 38 - Appalachian State 36. Nason has 12 points in 10 minutes, Bartell has 9 but surprisingly has missed two free throws. Rutherford has 11 for Samford, but Matlock has just 2.

15:13 left, we lead 50-46. Nason has come out hot and has 19, while Serrano and Bartell are both at 9. Morozov is causing us problems inside and the 7'1" big man has 12 points.

McLoughlin gets called for a 3rd foul early in the second half, his 4th with 15:10 and then his 5th when he gets a technical for arguing and he's done.

10:48 left and we lead 57-54. Sanders, Woodworth and Bass make for an undersized frontcourt trio, but hopefully they can hold their own. Bartell has 14 points now.

Last media time out is at 7:01 and we're down 64-66. Nason has 4 fouls now, and is about to come back in after sitting the last 2 or 3 minutes. Bartell is up to 18 points, most of them from the free throw line.

Back to back baskets by the Bulldogs makes me call time out with 3:44 let with our lead cut to 76-73. We went on a great stretch with Nason, Bass and Serrano all scoring. Serrano is up to 16 points, and Bass is just a rebound away from a double double with 10 and 9 and he's played a little bit of center.

Of course the next play, Bass gets called for 3 in the key and we turn it over. We can't score, let up a basket and then Nason gets called for his 5th foul and he's done. Samford makes two free throws and now we trail 76-77 with 2:07 left. Samford's on a 7-0 run.

Bartell gets a bucket the next possession, and then snares the rebound and brings the ball up court and lets it fly from three and nails it to put us up 4. Morozov gets a bucket inside, we trade a couple of misses, then Serrano takes his man baseline and jams it home, I call timeout. We lead 83-79 with 36 seconds left. Serrano is up to 18 points and Bartell is at 25. Bass gets his double-double and has 10 and 10.

For no good reason, we're going to play man this possession. It resulted in a foul on Woodworth on a Morozov attempt. The Russian makes of two from the line and Serrano gets the rebound and fouled with our lead at 3 with 26 seconds left. We are still in the 1 and 1, he hits both. They turn it over and we hit free throws. Then they turn it over AGAIN and we hit free throws. They do hit a three at the buzzer, but all it does is make the final score: Appalachian State 89 - Samford 83. A high scoring affair, with a combined 20 made threes. All 3 of my perimeter players had solid games, even if 14 of Bartell's 27 points were from the line. Nice to get revenge on a team that beat us earlier this season. Up to 12 wins and just two away from guaranteeing a .500 conference record, which would be just the 7th in the last 20 years.

                      January 1970 Update

We go 6-3 for the month, the same as our conference record, and given the injury problems we've had this year I'm thrilled with the record. We've had some absolute stinkers offensively, but our defense has been excellent at times or at least the opponent's offenses have been pitiful at times. Serrano, Nason and Bartell are combining for nearly 50 points a game between the three of them, and normally at least one of them plays well, and when all of them do we really can put a hurting on a team. Ramage has missed 6 games, but should be back very soon which will only help down the stretch.

                      January Recruiting Update

With 5 of our 6 scholarships taken, last month was mainly about scouting big men. I don't really want to add a low level JUCO just fill the scholarship, so I spent most of our budget overseas looking at potential freshman to add. My scout likes Zachary Spencer a post out of the UK, but I'm a little wary of his scouting report on him, plus he's likely to go to Virginia Union. I'll keep scouting, looking for a diamond in the rough. But, it's increasingly likely I'll carry that last scholarship into next season.

Dorsey Bowser is averaging 22.5 points a game and right at 5 three pointers made a game. He's easily the most prolific guard in the conference and he's currently 11th in the nation in scoring. Paz (11.9) is having an okay year, but is prone to having some very low efficiency nights. McKnight (12.6 ppg) has done a good job this year scoring the ball inside and taking some pressure off Bowser. We'll start off in 1-3-1 zone and we won't double to start and just see how it goes.

Ramage is at 97% and will play, but he'll come off the bench and I'll likely use him very liberally. It'll be the first action he's seen since January 8th at UNC Greensboro.

I just can't get a play stoppage, and I call timeout with 9:38 left, and I haven't updated because, we trail 13-25. Bowser has already hit a trio of three pointers, while Paz has matched him and has 9 points of his own. Bartell has 6 and Bracey 4 to lead us.

The last media timeout of the half is at 2:09 and we trail 26-42. We've finally started getting a few baskets to go, but we haven't been able to stop CotC on the other end. We've yet to hit a three and are 0-10. Serrano leads us with 7 points now.

Both teams trade missed baskets down the stretch, costing us a major opportunity to cut into this lead by 6 or 8. CotC hits a bucket at the buzzer to break the scoring drought and the half time score is College of Charleston 44 - Appalachian State 26. Major offensive woes right now, zero three pointers at half. If we had just connected on 2 or 3 of them, the score would look far better. Ramage played 10 minutes in the 1st half and scored 4 points with 2 boards. Bass and McLoughlin both have 2 fouls, but both will start the 2nd half.

Bartell completes a 3 point play with 12:01 left, and CotC calls timeout because the score is now 40-53. We STILL haven't hit a three, but we're getting to the line, especially Ramage who is a perfect 6-6 from the line this half. If we can just get a couple of damn threes to fall we can get back in this. Paz and Bowser each have 14 a piece to lead the Cougars.

Any dreams we had of a comeback are now dashed. I call timeout with 8:40 left and we trail 40-63. We haven't scored (so obviously still no three pointers) and the Cougars are getting easy baskets on us.

Serrano hits a three with 6:38, our first of the game and it cuts their lead to 47-68. We're 1-17 from beyond the arc and Nason is 0-9 all by himself and has yet to score a point this game.

No real point in updating too much between the last update and the end of the game. Final score ends up being College of Charleston 86 - Appalachian State 61. We finish 1-22 from beyond the arc and Nason puts up a goose egg. Ramage was productive in his first game back. He didn't play the last 10+ minutes as I didn't want to risk a re-injury since he wasn't quite 100% healthy. He'll be back in the starting lineup next game, though I'm not 100% sure whose job he's taking. Swept by the Cougars this season, and we're now 3 games back from 1st place which probably ends any faint hopes we had at a conference title this season.

                            1969-1970 Game 23 Preview

February 8th, 1970 at St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans (9-12)
                            Conference: Independent
                            Location: Sparkill, New York
                            1968-1969 record: 11-19

St. Thomas Aquinas is a 14 prestige school who is currently unaffiliated with a conference. They joined D-1 in 1947-48 and have been doing a decent job as an independent every since. They win 10+ games most years which is a bigger accomplishment than it sounds. They've never truly had a good season, with 15 being a program high. Three times they've gone 15-14. There are a lot of teams in the East that are looking for conferences and right now St. Thomas Aquinas is pretty far down that list.

Playing a quick non-conference game before wrapping up the last 3 weekends of the conference season. They are really good from the line and don't turn the ball over that often. They do have more talent than the average independent team, but they've yet to beat a decent team.

PG: Johnson, 6'2", Junior: Started last year and averaged 6 points. Doesn't shoot much at all and mainly just takes care of the ball drops off a few assists and stays out of the way.

SG: Perdue, 6'3", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 11.1 points a game. Really good outside shooter that shoots about 75% of his shots from beyond the arc where he knocks down 42% of them, really completely the lacks the ability to create his own shot. Decent defender.

SF: Swallow, 6'2", Sophomore: Played 8 minutes a a game last year. Attacks the basket and will put up a few threes a game. Really a weak rebounder that isn't really a 3, and much more of a 2.

PF: Eakins, 6'8", Junior: 3 year starter averaged 9 and 5 last year. Okay defender and rebounder who is slowly getting his offensive game together. Almost to 10 and 6. Probably won't improve much from this point.

C: Combs, 7'0", Junior: Started 4 games last year and averaged 21 minutes and 6 points and 6 boards. Having a productive year, 9 and 8. Okay defender.

Bench: Tankersley started as a sophomore and played 34 minutes a game. It's much better he's in a bench role now. He's an offensive minded guard who is struggling to make jump shots. Maples is a 6'9" versatile big man who can guard inside and out and be a poor offensive SF and PF. Freshman point guard Barrett is 6'3" and has a nice shot and will be a nice player in a few years.

Coach: Russ Mickelson, 47 years old. 57-82 career record. 5th season at St. Thomas Aquinas.

Good scout and knows offense. Horrible with defense. Could maybe be okay a level or two above independent ball.

We've really struggled on the road this season and this team has more talent than your average unaffiliated school, so this could easily be a loss. Ramage is 100% and is back in the starting lineup, he'll replace McLoughlin, so we'll try a Bass-Ramage undersized frontline and see how it goes.

15:10 left and we trail 8-13. Bartell is already at 2 fouls, while Nason is 0-2 so far and we'll see how long his streak can go. Now that Ramage is back it does potentially allow Bass to see a little time at SF, especially if we have foul trouble with our perimeter players.

7:54 left and we trail 20-28. We've got foul trouble with Nason, Bartell and Bracey all with 2 fouls. Ramage and Bartell both have 5. Nason finally scored with a couple of free throws to break his game+ streak. Our zone isn't stopping them, so we've switched to man.

Bass hits a short jumper to bring the score to 28-32 and St. Thomas calls timeout with 3:59. Bass has 5 points and 5 boards and has been going back and forth from PF to SF.

The Spartans respond with a nice run of their own and luckily Serrano hits a 3 right before the half to make the half time score a more manageable St. Thomas Aquinas 41 - Appalachian State 34. We've had 7 turnovers so far, and most of them have seemed to end up in easy baskets for our opponent. Perdue has 9 and Swallow and Eakins are right behind him with 7 a piece. Ramage picked up his 2nd right before half and Bracey has 3 fouls which is a problem as well as our only decent backup guard.

I've called two timeouts in 2 and half minutes. There is 17:37 left and we trail 34-53.

Media timeout at 9:08 and we trial 48-67, not a lot has changed. We're not hitting any threes, 2-14. For some reason Serrano has shot 7 of them by himself.

Nason finally hits a three with 4:27 left and it brings it to 58-69. St. Thomas calls timeout. Ramage has 18 points, 8 of them from the line.

We never get closer to that, and the final score ends up being St. Thomas Aquinas 77 - Appalachian State 62. Another horrible performance from three, which makes us a combined 4-37 our last two games. Not good for our team average. Never good to defeated by an independent team, let alone getting torched pretty good like we were. Back to conference play after this and hopefully we can finish strong with a 9-7 or 10-6 record.

                                1969-1970 Game 24 Preview

                                February 12th, 1970 at Chattanooga Mocs (17-7) [8-3]
                                Conference: Southern

1968-69 record: 20-15 (8-8), lost in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament to 3 seed Penn State 74-91

Chattanooga is 30 prestige team that has had 4 or 5 spurts of success surrounded by longer spurts of a complete lack of success. 7 NCAA appearances all time, never advancing past the 1st round. They did win the CBI back in 1953-54 to cap off a 25-11 (12-4) season.

They started off so well, but have now lost 3 of 4, and what once seemed like a for sure conference champ is going to have to duke it out down the stretch, especially since they end the season with 4 straight road games. They've lost back to back home games coming into this one against Western Carolina and Elon, so hopefully we can catch them on their downslide and not be the first game of their renaissance.

They have been very impressive statistically all season, scoring the ball well, and limiting turnovers.

PG: Caskey, 5'1'', Junior: JUCO who is having a very nice first season. Scores the ball, doesn't really create for others, but doesn't turn it over either. Aggressive guard who can score at every level.

SG: Jenkins, 6'3", Senior: 3 year starter, averaged 18.8 a game last year. Will put up close to 10 threes a game and make a solid percentage of them. Slowly is developing some point guard skills as a senior. Poor defender, but his offense more than makes up for that.

SF: Gerdes, 6'10", Sophomore: Transferred from St. Bonaventure after not playing as a freshman there. Provides major size for the position and can score around the basket and will create some for others. Shoots too many threes and can't defend a thing.

PF: Crossman, 6'9", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 11.7 and 6.5 last year. Just a tad banged up, the junior is having a very productive season, and is always a threat for a double double. Has three point range, but is just 4-8 from there this season. Shot a horrible 5-49 his freshman year. Could cause a lot of problems for our front line.

C: Davis, 6'9", Senior: Played 7 minutes a game last year. The former JUCO plays pretty good defense and helps out on the glass even if his offensive game is pretty unrefined.

Bench: Laxton is a 6'1" guard that will put up and make some threes. Horan is a JUCO point guard who has knocked down shots in his limited playing time. Wright is 6'9" and their main post reserve. He can score a bit and contributes rebounding but he's an awful defender.

Coach: Alan Tucker, 48 years old. 17-7 career record. 1st year at Chattanooga.

The rookie coach is a lights out recruiter and has developed offensively a little bit, but is pretty bad elsewhere. Prior to finally getting a head job at 48, he spent 4 years a piece at Illinois State (a Big Ten School) and Pacific (The pre-eminent mid-major power) as their ace recruiter.

He should be able to get some talent to Chattanooga or wherever he coaches, and that can always bring results regardless of the ability to coach.

Even if Chattanooga has lost two in a row, they are still a very good team and I do not like my chances to take them at their place. Jenkins and Crossman are a very deadly inside out punch, that rivals anything I've seen all year. If we are going to have a chance Nason has to stop shooting so horribly. Big game if we want to stay near the top in the conference standings. We basically have bad teams at home and the toughest teams on the road from here on out, which is a drag.
