    1970-71 Game 12 Preview

    January 2nd, 1971 vs USC-Aiken Pacers (8-4) [1-1]
    Conference: Southern
    Location: Aiken, South Carolina
1969-70 record: 23-10, lost in the 3rd round of the NIT.

USC-Aiken is a 29 prestige team, which is a very impressive number for a program that has been independent since it joined the NCAA back in 1949-50. They've slowly improved over the last decade+, getting into the teens in wins fairly consistently before their excellent season last year.

They do a good job taking care of the ball, and it has masked some of their offensive problems this season. They do a solid job on the glass as well.

PG: Allen, 5'10", Junior: Started last year and averaged 9 points a game. Not a true point guard, has a nice jumper and is scoring 15 a game on good percentages this year. Awful defender, though he can get some steals.

SG: Cordoba, 6'2", Sophomore: Walk-on who played 12 minutes a game last year. Has some offensive talent, but another horrid defender.

SF: Sweet, 6'7", Senior: 4 year starter who averaged 10 points and 5.5 rebounds last year. At 9.5 and 7.7 this year, as he's struggling from the field. Unlike his other backcourt mates, Sweet is a tremendous defender, who does his best to counterbalance the ineptitude of his fellow starters.

PF: King, 6'7", Senior: 3 year starter. Averaged 8.7 and 6.8 last year. Plays solid defense, gets on the offensive glass. Has some stretch 4 to his game, but he's shooting too much this year. 8-37 from three.

C: Mariscal, 6'8", Junior: Played just 30 total minutes last year in 3 games, which makes he think he was injured. Another guy with an interesting offensive skill set. Really can shoot the three, probably would fare better on the perimeter.

Bench: Seibel is a 6'1" guard off the bench who can shoot the lights out. Dixon is a hybrid 3/4 wing that can defend inside and out, and has an okay three point shot. Couture, a point guard and Urena a post, will each play a few minutes, neither are expected to do much. They have another good shooter in the 6'6" Leal on the bench, but he hardly plays.

Coach: Williams Ferris, 55 years old. 47/79/85/9, 74-59 career record. 5th season at USC-Aiken.

Decent coach, and I'm kind of surprised he didn't bolt after his strong season last year. Was at Vanderbilt for a year and Air Force for 3, before getting the head coaching gig.

They have an interesting team, certainly more depth oriented than most successful teams at this level. Most teams that are strong in level one conferences just have 2, maybe 3, good players and everybody else just chips in. These guys actually win with a group effort.

      1970-71 Game 12 Results

Ramage gets called for his 2nd foul with 13:15 left, and we lead 13-9. We started off up 8-1, but have slowed down since. Morey and Flores both have 5 points a piece and a three each between them.

7:21 left, and we lead 29-18. Morey hits another three and now has 8. But, the story, yet again is Ingram who grabbed and ran with the backup point guard spot. Despite his horrible defense, he keeps getting buckets. He scored 6 points in his 6 minutes.

Morey picks up foul number 2 with about 5:30 left, but we do alright without him. Halftime score is Appalachian State 42 - USC-Aiken 32. Morey leads us with 11, and Flores has 7 points and 4 rebounds. Aiken is shooting just 32% from the field and is having a hard time with our zone.

Emerick gets hurt with 14:15 left, luckily he can stay in the game at 77%, we lead 51-43. We seem to be having a hard time getting defensive rebounds this half, I wasn't paying attention to the rebounding numbers, but we're still up 24-21 overall, so maybe I'm wrong.

8:58 I call timeout after an Allen three pointer gives him 19 points and cuts our lead to 57-59.

I call a timeout after they miss a 3 that would have given them the lead, so I can get Emerick back out of the game and let the freshman Ingram handle PG from here on out. With 4:33 we lead 62-60. We've got 11 turnovers, a lot of them this half, and 5 of them by Flores.

Last media timeout of the game with 1:46 left and we lead 71-66. Conner has gotten both of his baskets the last two minutes. Ingram has 8 points, 3 boards and 3 assists. There haven't been many fouls this game, we have 3, they have 5. So I think Aiken is going to start fouling to get into the bonus.

That's what they do, and even though they hit a couple of threes in there, we keep knocking down free throws. We end up winning by the score of Appalachian State 80 - USC Aiken 72. Morey with another strong game, 22 points and 5 boards. Despite Flores' foul troubles, anytime he can get double digits scoring, I'll take it. Sanders with 10 points in 17 minutes. Bracey hit a couple of big threes in the second half to keep Aiken at bay.

      2-0 in conference!

        December 1970 + 1 (6-2)

Sort of forgot to update after December, so we get one January game in there as well. Very successful month and are currently on a 5 game winning streak. We're about to start 5 game road swing, including a non conference slate as well, so we'll see what our record is when we come out of it. Morey is at 21.8, so he's slowed down a little, but still having a fantastic freshman year. Ramage has been solid, and normally one of Flores, Sanders, or Emerick normally has a solid game to help out. Defensively, we've just been average, and teams have really teed off on us from three. But, the story of this team is its ability to score.

        Recruiting Update

Took a look at a lot of JUCO big men last month and have identified the one we're going after, and likely to get. Hopefully we're going to get 6'8" Amos Garcia out of Louisiana. He's an all defense and post big man, but that's something we need on this squad. No other teams are after him, so I should be able to lock him up pretty soon.

          1970-71 Game 13 Preview

          January 7th, 1971 at Samford Bulldogs (4-7) [0-2]
          Conference: Southern
          Location: Birmingham, Alabama
          1969-70 record: 7-23 (5-11)

Samford is a 20 prestige school that had one of their worst seasons in school history, and that's saying something because Samford didn't even win 10 games in a season until the 1905-06 season.

They are off to a rough start, they do have a home win against a good UAB team, but it was pretty fluky. They somehow managed to get #4 Georgia Tech, 9-4 Auburn and 11-3 UAB to come and play them at their place. My one last hangup about this game is not being able to fix scheduling. But, they've been bad offensively and defensively. They have had success at turning teams over.

Emerick is at 95% and will start, though Ingram could see 20 minutes.

PG: Rutherford, 5'11", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 13.3 and 3.6 rebounds last year. Has been injury prone throughout his career. He's a good scoring point guard, who does a solid job defensively as well. If he were 5 inches taller he'd be a star.

SG: Billings, 6'4", Junior: Played 17 minutes a game last year and averaged 8 points. Excellent three point shooter, shoots 10 a game. Horrible defender and rebounder.

SF: Osborn, 6'7", Sophomore: Started 17 games last year and averaged 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds. Big wing that does a good job on the glass and has some perimeter skills as well. Not a good defender.

PF: Faison, 6'8", Freshman: Very developed for a freshman, he already basically is what he will be. Okay defensively, but has a nice offensive game with some range to it. Could averaged 15 in a few years. Bad on the glass.

C: Morozov, 7'1", Senior: 4 year starter. Averaged 12 and 7 last year. Big Russian that can really score it around the basket and does a good job on the defensive glass. Having his best offensive season by far.

Bench: Bowman is a 6'9" sophomore with some scoring ability and not much else. Fomitchev is another Russian import, he plays solid defense but his offense will never be more than average. Their starters play a ton of minutes and for good reason, there isn't much on the bench.

Coach: David Bennett, 44 years old. 35/25/61/59. 4-7 career record. 1st season at Samford.

The previous coach Gavin Mannino got the boot after 6 years at Samford. The current coach was at Saint Louis for a couple of years and Buffalo before that and a litany of low major schools prior to all of that. At 44, he's been coaching for 15 years already. He's a decent floor coach, but will need some help getting talent in.

Road games are always iffy at this level and they have some offensive weapons, but I like my odds to score on them if we can stay out of foul trouble. This is the first game of a 5 game road stretch, if we get out of it 3-2, I'd be happy with it, I think.

            1970-71 Game 13 Results

Both teams come out absolutely on fire, the first media timeout is at 14:37 and we lead 20-15. I'm 8-9 and they are at 66%. Emerick has a couple of threes, Sanders has 4 quick points off the bench. Conner's got 5 points but also picked up two quick fouls.

Both teams continue to score, we're at 74% and they are at 59%, but they've hit a few more threes than us which is why with 6:55 left it's all tied at 40. Emerick is up to 11 and Sanders has 8. They are peppering us with threes, Osborn has 10 to lead the Bulldogs. I'm going to switch to man and see how it goes.

Man doesn't work either, we let up several threes and with 2:53 I call timeout with the score 51-54. Both teams are shooting out of their minds. Morey has gotten hot and quickly is up to 14 points. Samford's entire starting backcourt is already in double figures. Flores picked up his 2nd foul earlier and now he and Conner are going to come in for a bit. Ramage has 2, but he'll stay benched for the rest of the half hopefully.

At half time we have a ridiculous score of Appalachian State 61 - Samford 60. Morey has 16 points and 4 three pointers, Emerick has the same number of threes and 14 points. Sanders is a perfect 5-5 from the field in his 11 minutes. Just a lot of good offensive numbers, but our defense both man and zone were horrendous. Should be an interesting second half, I wish I could see their three point numbers. They are at 67% right now. I think they are 12-18.

We are racking up the fouls in the second half. Conner has 3 and Ramage has 4. So we'll be seeing a lot of Sanders and Woodworth for a bit. With 15:48, we trail 68-69.

11:53, we trail 73-76. Flores got a steal but blew a dunk that would have given us a 4 point lead, they came down and hit a three and have gone a little run since.

Conner follows his own miss with a dunk and it ties the game at 84 and Samford calls timeout. It gets Conner to 9 and 9. Emerick hasn't scored in the second half, but is up to 6 assists.

Ramage fouls out with 3:57 left, and Samford leads 95-91. We just cannont get a stop against these guys. We are going to end up with ridiculous offensive numbers, hopefully we can end up on top by a couple. Sanders has 15 and 4. Morey is at 21 points.

Their center Morozov is not a good free throw shooter but he's hitting them today on his way to 20 points. Morey hits a three with 2:10 left to cut their lead to 97-98, and we just can't quite get over the hump.

They hit a free throw on the other end and then we trade misses. Morey grabs the rebound with 1:03 left and we're down 97-99. It's immediately stolen and then Sanders eventually fouls them on the shot with 30 seconds left. It sends the freshman Faison, a 70% free throw shooter to the line. He makes one, making it a 97-100 game with 26 seconds left.

Even with 26 seconds, I've been burned before by the AI in this game, if I don't force a three, I might end up getting a last second 2, and have zero chance at tying it. I bring in Bracey for Conner and have 5 three point shooters on the court.

They wait until the end of the game to get a shot off, but Emerick puts up a three and drills it at the buzzer to tie the game. We're headed to overtime with the score: Appalachian State 100 - Samford 100. Emerick's up to 17 points now and Morey is at 24 with 6-11 from beyond the arc. Again, several impressive offensive lines. Hopefully the defense can step up a bit in OT. I'm going to play man the first possession and see how it goes.

And it hasn't gone well. With 1:58 left, we've yet to score and we trail 100-106.

Sanders gets a bucket the next time down and we're going to press, it works like a charm and Emerick gets a steal and finishes with a layup on the other end. We're still in man, but now we'll switch to zone and back out of the press.

They get called for an illegal screen and we have the ball down 2 with 1:10 left.

Flores turns it over and they get a layup. Conner gets fouled but misses the front end of the 1 and 1 and now we're going to foul.

We play the foul game for a while and get some more points on the board, it all ends up with a loss. Final score: Samford 114 - Appalachian State 108. A truly insane offensive game. They were 17-36 from three and I was 16-36 from three They had 4 players with 20+ and all played nearly 40 of the 45 minutes. Morozov a 60% career free throw shooter was 12-14 from the line. The other Russian Fomitchev had three 3 pointers coming into the game and equaled that one in one game in just 8 minutes. So their guards absolutely torched us. Flores has 4 turnovers, including an incredibly costly one in the OT. Tough loss.

              1970-71 Game 14 Preview

              January 9th, 1971 at Elon Phoenix (8-7) [3-0]
              Conference: Southern
              Location: Elon, North Carolina
1969-70 record: 19-14 (9-7), lost in the 1st round of the ci.com tournament

Elon is a 31 prestige team coming off a pretty decent year. The 60's were certainly the golden age of Elon basketball, and they are off to a pretty good start in the earliest portions of the 70's.

They are playing some really strong defense to start the season and have handled their first three conference problems with zero problems, 20+ points wins in all of them. But, they've also played 3 of the worst teams in conference. A lot of experience in their starting lineup.

PG: Dungan, 6'3", Senior: 4 year starter who averaged 12 a game last year. Not a true point guard, he doesn't create for others, but he takes great care of the ball. Solid defender who doesn't take bad shots.

SG: McSweeney, 6'1", Senior: Played 15 minutes a game last year. Underwhelming for a 2 guard, decent defender.

SF: Ross, 6'8", Senior: Played 4 minutes a game last year. Little bit of an offensive game, more of a 4/3 than anything.

PF: Williams, 6'7", Junior: Started last year and averaged 11.5 and 5.7. The lone non-senior in the starting lineup. Has some offensive talent inside but is underwhelming otherwise.

C: Gold, 6'8", Senior: 3 year starter. Averaged 6 and 8 last year. Good defender who contributes on the glass. His offensive game isn't much, though he can stroke the three pointer.

Bench: Folford is a decent big man on the bench who will score a bit and block a shot or two. Hodges is a 5'11" combo guard who is a pest defensively and has some real talent offensively. Mason is 6'2" and a solid shooter, who doesn't do much besides catch and shoot.

Coach: Glenn Gurrola, 52 years old. 31/81/68/100. 267-314 career record. 4th season at Elon.

Very good coach who has his team really playing well defensively.

They've got a lot of upper classmen playing a lot of minutes and have a really strong coach and they are playing at home, so this won't be an easy game. But, on the bright side, they aren't all that talented, so I'm not too worried about them from that aspect.

                1970-71 Game 14 Results

We get out to an 8-0 start, but by the second media timeout at 11:57, it is all tied up at 18. Morey has two team fouls, and is on the bench. It's been a team effort scoring the ball, with several guys with just one basket. Morey leads us with 5.

7:37 left, we trail 23-25. Morey is getting some run despite the 2 fouls, but he hasn't done anything yet. Ramage is up to 5. We've had some turnover problems, with 5 as a team already.

Morey hits a three and Elon calls a timeout because we lead 31-25 with 5:50 left. Ramage has 7 points and 4 rebounds. Morey leads us with 8. Flores picked up his 2nd foul.

We had 5 turnovers in the last 5 minutes of the half and can't hit a shot and Morey and Flores both picked up their 3rd foul, so it's a miracle we still lead by the score of Appalachian State 38 - Elon 37. The foul trouble to our wings could be a major problem very soon. Conner has 6 points and 9 rebounds. If we could shore up our turnover problems, we'd have a pretty nice lead. Morey leads us with 13.

Very nice start to the second half capped by a Flores steal and dunk to make it 50-42 with 17:09 left and Elon calls timeout. Conner has a double double now with 12 points and 11 boards and he's been dominant in the second half.

11:28 left, we lead 59-56. Flores picks up his 4th foul as he gets called for a charge, it is also his 4th turnover. Morey has another three and is up to 16 points. Ramage is up to 9 and 9, but is just 4-12 from the field. Without Flores, Bracey is going to play some major minutes down the stretch.

7:13 left, we lead 67-59. Morey has 21 now and is 4-8 from three. Conner is a perfect 6-6 from the field and has 14 and 13. Bracey has 4 fouls now as well all of a sudden so he might not last too much longer. Emerick has just 3 points all in the first 2 minutes of the game, but he does have 6 assists.

3:58 left, we lead 74-61. Things are looking good as we've started to pull away. Ramage is at 11-11 but is 5-15 from the field.

Morey hits a garbage time three to get to 26 points and to get the final score in this one to Appalachian State 77 - Elon 66. We overcome 16 turnovers thanks to some strong shooting and rebounding. Outrebounded them 46-29 and Conner had 18 of them by himself. Elon's not that great, but they were 3-0 and have a really good coach, so I'll take that win every day.

                  1970-71 Game 15 Preview

                  January 12th, 1971 at High Point Panthers (8-8) [3-4]
                  Conference: Big South
                  Location: High Point, North Carolina
                  1969-70 record: 14-16 (12-6)

High Point is a 19 prestige school. We're playing one of a total of 3 non-con games peppered throughout the conference schedule, I don't really like that, but when you schedule home and homes that's the risk you run. Besides a few blips, they've been pretty low level in their conference, though they did have a halfway successful season with a 12-6 record in conference.

They are already pretty deep into their conference season. They have played horrible defense, especially guarding the three, but have been pretty solid offensively, so this looks like it could be a high scoring affair.

PG: Bennett, 6'3", Senior: Started last year and averaged 9.4 points. Combo guard who can defend and do an okay job offensively.

SG: Roeder, 6'1", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 5.8 points and 2.7 assists. Having a much better sophomore year after a pretty disappointing rookie campaign. Shoots the ball well and passes it pretty well for an offguard as well.

SF: Hahn, 6'8", Senior: Played 19 minutes a game last year and averaged 8 points a game. The German import is having a ridiculous season in his senior campaign, with 22 points a game and shooting 54% from the field. He's playing over his head, but he can score it. Horrible defender though.

PF: Gadson, 6'7", Freshman: Decent talent, holds his own defensively and a smidge of offensive game.

C: Smith, 6'10", Junior: Started last year and averaged 6 points and 9.5 rebounds. The Aussie is a tremendous rebounder and will challenge Conner. Average defender and has a bit of a three point game, 14-35 from there this season.

Bench: Garcia is their backup point guard, he's 6'2" and won't make a fool of himself and might even hit a three. Blanco is 6'6" and another really good rebounder but he stinks otherwise. Mannino and Ramsey combine for about 12 minute s game. Neither do a whole lot.

Coach: Thomas Harris, 41 years old. 14/58/66/62, 67-99 career record. 6th season at High Point.

Solid floor coach, but will need help and luck getting talent.

This will probably be a pretty high octane game, and hopefully we can get enough stops and compete on the glass to come out on top.

I call timeout after a barrage of High Point threes has us down 9-19 with 13:41 left. Ramage has 4 points to lead us.

7:57, we've gone on a very nice run to cut it to single digits and we trail 25-34. At one point we trailed 15-32, but we finally got a few threes to fall, Emerick and Ingram both hitting one and we've clawed back in it a little bit. Morey and Ramage both have two fouls, which is tough.

We get ambushed there for a bit, and we salvage it a little bit with a stretch of threes from Morey and Flores. It gets the half time score to High Point 57 - Appalachian State 40. We're getting destroyed on the glass, 10-22 and our rebounding machine Conner has been shut out in his 13 minutes on the glass. Ramage picked up his 3rd foul right before half, he's a perfect 5-5 from the field. Morey is 3-4 from three and has 11 points.

They give us a perfect opportunity to get right back in the game by not scoring the first 3 minutes of the second half, but we don't do anything with it, just two points and after a couple of turnovers and buckets on the other end I call timeout with 15:51 left and we're down 42-61. We've been playing man for a while, and it seems to be working okay.

And it's a massacre. We're down 54-78 with 6:24 left, 16 turnovers and it seems most have resulted in layups or dunks on the other end. Emerick has 10 points joining Morey and Ramage in double figures. Ramage picked up his 4th foul a while ago and is just now coming back in.

Morey gets a few garbage time buckets down the stretch and ends up with 20, but we end up with a pretty sound beating, losing by the score of: High Point 92 - Appalachian State 77. We got beat up badly on the boards and they had their way with us offensively, and their offensive stud Hahn, hardly did anything. Smith's 15 rebounds to Conner's 4 was the pivotal stat of the game. Ingram had a very productive offensive game. Newlin is coming back soon and it will be a tough call on who to play.

They've struggled on both sides of the ball this year, they have been an excellent free throw shooting team which has won them a few games.

PG: Geis, 6'3", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 8.5 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists last year. Interesting player that passes, rebounds a little and can really shoot the three. If he could play any defense he might be a pro.

SG: Goodling, 6'2", Sophomore: Played 14 minutes a game last year and averaged nearly 7 points a game. Another good outside shooter, he's also automatic from the line and is having a great sophomore season with 15.6 a game, no defense or rebounding though.

SF: Thorne, 6'5", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 15.7 a game last year. Not shooting the ball nearly as well as he did last season, which is to be expected given his ratings. But, his usage is higher this year too. Okay defender who can grab a steal.

PF: Shafer, 6'9", Junior: Played 19 minutes a game last year and averaged 5 and 5. The second German national on the squad, he's a solid big man who does everything adequately and even rebounds at an above average clip.

C: Roberts, 6'10", Freshman: Talented freshman who will be at tough matchup the next few years. Scores well, looks to be a solid rebounder. Doesn't defend much, but 12 and 8 out of a freshman is pretty solid.

Bench: Jones is a 5'10" point guard who has been pretty steady this year. Bourassa is a 4/3 hybrid who really stinks. Carmago is their main post depth and the 6'9" junior also stinks.

Coach: Royal Davis, 45 years old. 29/34/19/58. 52-88 career record. 5th season at Davidson.

Bad coach overall that has been fortunate he's been able to recruit a decent starting lineup.

So, they do have a strong starting lineup with pretty solid talent at all 5 positions, all 5 will play a ton of minutes and for good reason; their bench is horrible. So, it'd be nice if we could get a guy or two into foul trouble and get into their bench as much as possible. Good opportunity for a conference road win and to rebound from the debacle against High Point.

                        1970-71 Game 16 results

Newlin is at 89%, so he's available, but Ingram will be the backup point guard to start the game.

Second media timeout is at 11:26 and we lead 21-17. Morey has 9 points and is 2-6 from beyond the arc. Flores has a three as well but also has two fouls. Ramage has 5, and 3 of them are from the free throw line. Thorne leads Davidson with 7.

4:14 left and we trail 29-31. We've gone cold, but have managed to stick around. Morey is up to 11 and Ingram has 6 off the bench. Davidson's perimeter players are having luck against us so far.

We have a very bad last 4 minutes and go into half trailing by the score of: Davidson 45 - Appalachian State 33. We kept missing shots and had a few turnovers as well and it really got out of hand, despite a couple of timeouts. Davidson is up to 7 team fouls after being at 4 for ages. If we can get into their bench, we can make up the margin in a hurry. Morey is just 4-13, and is 2-9 from three, which has to be his worst performance of the year so far.

Second media timeout of the half at 10:09 and we trail 50-59. Haven't made up much ground, but we did manage to scramble back a bit after things got hairy getting down 16 or so. Morey is still firing them up and has just one three in the second half. Conner has 4 fouls and is currently on the bench. The real reason we're trailing of course is that we're 5-23 from three.

8:11 I call timeout, we trail 50-66, Morey misses some more threes and is now 3-14. He was at 51% from beyond the arc coming into the game.

We cut it to 10 at one point, but a Goodling three at 1:35 is the nail in the coffin, it puts us down 64-79.

The final score ends up being a nasty one, we lose by the tally of: Davidson 86 - Appalachian State 68. Davidson had zero issues with foul trouble, and had zero problems scoring on us, while we had our worst three point shooting performance in a while. Morey's game dropped his season percentage by 3 points. Flores has well had an awful game and he's now just 24-81 from three, which is 29.6%.

We get to see our new conference foe twice in the first 6 conference games. Allen is having an excellent season offensively, while Cordoba is putting up tons of shots and having under 40% of them go in. They've struggled offensively most of the year, and I think our last shooting performance was a fluke, so I think we have a chance. This is the last game of a 5 game road trip and it would really be a drag to go 1-4 during it.

Media timeout at 11:31 and we trail 15-16. Morey has 8 points and has hit 3-4 shots. Ramage has two fouls and will be sitting for a while, and we'll need Sanders to provide some offense inside. We're getting whooped on the glass right now, 4-9. Newlin is back to 100% and will come off the bench first. I just don't want to play Ingram's bad defense 15 minutes anymore.

7:00 left and we lead 25-21. Morey is up to 13 points and is playing very well offensively. Newlin hit a three while he was in.

Last media timeout of the half and we lead 31-26 with 3:44 left.

Aiken's Allen hits a three at the buzzer to make the half time score: Appalachian State 38 - USC-Aiken 35. It gets Allen up to 12 and he's had timely shots already this game. Morey has 16 and is having a nice rebound game after the disaster last contest. Newlin has played well with 5 points off the bench, I should try to fold Ingram in at some point, he can score the ball if nothing else. Ramage played a nice stretch without getting called for a foul. That was the nice part of it, him not fouling. He didn't do anything besides miss a few shots.

I call timeout with 13:21 to finally make a few subs. We lead 51-47. Morey has kept us afloat, hitting a few more threes and has us at 22. Ramage has been active on the glass, but is missing shot after shot. He has 3 fouls now as well.

9:37 left, after a couple of Sanders free throws, Aiken calls time and we lead 58-51. Morey's at 27 and he's easily the best freshman I've ever recruited in playing this game, as far as just a pure shooter.

I call timeout with 4:51 left to get my starting lineup back in the game. We lead 67-60 and things are looking pretty good. Another 3 from Morey has him at 8 for the game and 30 points total. Ramage has been bad, but does have 12 boards and 4 assists.

2:28 left, we lead 69-62, we haven't done much but use up the clock, and Aiken has struggled to get out of their own way.

We hit enough free throws down the stretch to get away with a much needed win to end the road trip on a high note and to break a two game losing skid. Final score: Appalachian State 73 - USC-Aiken 67. A sweep of the newcomers to the conference. Major recovery offensively for Morey, and it means the difference between a loss and a win, since really nobody else did much besides Morey. Ramage and Flores both had very poor games from the field, good contributions from Newlin and Bracey off the bench. Emerick's been in a slump and we need him to be scoring 12 or so a game and knocking down a few threes.

Because they missed so many, I guess I didn't notice that Aiken shot 47! three pointers in this game and only made 13 of them. They shoot their average they beat me.

They are an up-tempo team who has had a lot of success on offense this year, and are very active on the offensive glass. They are a tough squad. Fortunately for us, they have a couple of minor injuries they are dealing with and their point guard Horan is out, and is backup is banged up but at 97% and should play, but the way their roster is set up it doesn't look like he will.

PG: Caskey, 5'11", Senior: Started last year. Former JUCO, who averaged 14.2 points a game last year and is having pretty much a repeat season so far. Can score the ball, and doesn't turn it over much. Not a true point.

SG: Brown, 6'3", Freshman: Top 300 recruit. Nice jump shot, will develop some other skills in time. Starting with the injury to Horan.

SF: Gerdes, 6'10", Junior: Started last year and averaged 11 and 5. Big wing that really just doesn't have a true position, but he can score inside and use his size to his advantage.

PF: Crossman, 6'9", Senior: 4 year starter, averaged 14.3 and 8.6 last season. Really strong offensive player who has really stepped up his three point shooting and is 17-46 this year. Plus, he can score inside, plus he rebounds. He could play the 3 as well.

C: Dennis, 6'8", Senior: Played 33 minutes total last season. Rebounds okay and isn't bad defensively, but that's about all he offers.

Bench: With the two injuries to their guards, their depth falls off pretty quick. They've got a few wings that will have to play, none of them are any good. They have a freshman big man, McAlpin, who is 6'8" and already a solid contributor inside, but can't play defense.

Coach: Alan Tucker, 49 years old. 100/12/76/12, 34-17 career record. 2nd season at Chattanooga, ace recruiter who should be able to put together some good offensive teams.

Like most good teams in lower conferences, they are good because they have a handful of solid players and that is enough to carry you through against these 300+ RPI teams. Crossman's a tough cover and they have some guards to cause us problems as well.

                                1970-71 Game 18 Results

A really bad start offensively, a lot of missed shots and 6 turnovers already by the 11:11 mark, we trail 10-19. It's been stuck on that score for a while, so we've had several chances to cut into that. Morey has a couple of three pointers, and is 2-5 for the game. Ramage has 6 boards.

Morey goes down with an injury with 10:52 left, same score. Luckily, it's not serious, and he's at 75%, but he'll come out for now. Flores has 2 fouls, though. So, it looks like Ingram time.

We're about to get smoked on our home floor, with 3:24 left, we trail 23-40. Just horrible offensively, especially with ball security, 10 turnovers. Newlin is the lone bright spot with 7 points in 9 minutes. Morey hasn't looked good since getting banged up, and I'm wary to play him.

At half time we trail by the score: Chattanooga 48 - Appalachian State 32. We finally started stringing a few solid possessions together, and we're 3-10 from the line. Crossman has 12 and so does the freshman Brown for the Mocs. Morey did hit a three and leads us with 9 points. Ramage has 3 fouls as does Emerick.

Flores goes down with an injury that will keep him out the rest of the game. This game is looking cursed. With 17:32 left we trail 34-54. Ramage has 4 fouls to add to the fun.

Emerick gets called for his 4th foul and then gets T'ed up for arguing, so he's done with 9:46 left, and we trail 41-68 a blowout at home.

There isn't much to talk about for the rest of the game, we lose by the score of Chattanooga 80 - Appalachian State 58. Just wrecked. We get outrebounded by 13. We go 8-20 from the line, we turn the ball over 16 times it's no wonder we lost. As mentioned before, luckily Morey's injury isn't too serious. But, Flores' is. He's done for 6-7 weeks. Which means unless we make into a postseason tournament, he's probably done for the year. It's the second straight year he's been injured mid season. He was playing 30 minutes a game, shooting poor percentages, but is easily our best defender. This was not a good game in any way, shape or form.
