    1970-71 Game 19 Preview

    January 28th, 1971 at Furman Paladins (9-11) [2-5]
    Conference: Southern
    Location: Greenville, South Carolina
1969-70 record: 22-11 (11-5], lost in the 2nd round of the CBI.

Furman is a 27 prestige school that has made a postseason tournament for 4 straight seasons coming into this one, though it looks like that is a streak that is going to break pretty soon. In the 40's and most of the 50's they were a legit low-major power.

They've lost a lot of talent from the last few years and it is showing with their statistics. They are #1 in the nation in not getting blocked so they have that going for them.

PG: Truman, 5'11", Junior: Started last year and averaged 7 points and 3 rebounds a game. Passing the ball better, but is struggling from the field, though to be fair he is shooting the ball much more. 12 points, 4 boards, 3 assists a game right now.

SG: Swaim, 6'2", Sophomore: Played 10 minutes a game last year and averaged 3 points. Solid defender who can knock down a three, pretty similar to our Flores. Missed several games due to injury this year.

SF: Owings, 6'1", Freshman: Talented offensive freshman who loves to get to get to the basket and also isn't afraid to put more threes than he should. His passing will develop some, but he's strictly off the ball. Should have some solid counting stats as a junior and senior.

PF: Ireland, 6'8", Senior: Played 12 minutes a game last year. Strong post player that does okay across the board and will contribute some decent numbers.

C: Madson, 6'7", Sophomore: Has missed a large chunk of the season, but the undersized Madson provides some real offensive punch inside, nearly 16 points a game in 5 contests played. He can't defend, so hopefully Ramage and Sanders can do some damage on him.

Bench: Ellington is 6'8" and an excellent rebounder off the bench, but provides almost zero offense. Miller is a 6'8" freshman post who has started 15 games this year and provided a little offense. He has the chops to be a major scorer inside eventually. Russell is a 6'4" wing who defends well and can hit at three, he's 15-30 so far this year. Redman is a talented offensive big man from Australia who is probably out of the rotation right now, with their team fully healthy. Bonin is a 6'6" sophomore wing that transferred from Rice prior to the season, he started 14 games with the injury to Swaim earlier this year. He's got some offensive ability, but he's not much.

Coach: Lucas Woodson, 45 years old. 23/69/77/51, 31-22 career record. 2nd season at Furman.

Solid coach, who will need a good recruiting assistant to help him bring in talent to coach up. I don't envision him being at Furman too long.

They've got some actual depth to their team, which is rare in the Southern. Their record is probably a little misleading given that 40% of their starting lineup has missed some major time, which has thrown off their rotation for large parts of the season, so this game is going to be tougher than it looked at first glance. Need our post players to step up.

With Flores done, Bracey will step into the starting lineup and will get his first collegiate start in this contest

      1970-71 Game 19 Results

I failed to mention that Morey is still a bit banged up, but he'll be in the starting lineup and playing his usual minutes.

Conner picks up his 2nd fouls with 14:50 left, but I can deal with it okay, because we lead 15-5. Ramage and Emerick each have 6 quick points a piece.

7:59 media timeout, we lead 25-18. They got it to within 2 at one point before we were able to separate a bit once again. Ramage is up to 9, and Sanders has 4 points and 4 rebounds off the bench.

3:42 left, we lead 40-28. Ramage is up to 11, but the real story of the last few minutes was a couple of Morey threes to get him up to 11 as well. Emerick and Sanders have joined Conner with 2 fouls.

Ramage hits a short jumper at the buzzer to give us a lead of: Appalachian State 47 - Furman 28. Ramage is at 15 points to lead us at half, Morey hit one more three and it put him at 14. Emerick only played 9 minutes in the 1st half, but was a perfect 4-4 from the field. Newlin played 11 minutes and didn't attempt a shot, though he did have 2 assists and a steal.

11:53 left and we lead 59-36 and we look like we're in total control. Morey's hit a few more shots in the second half and has 22 points now get to his season average. Our zone has worked wonderfully against them and their inside game has been totally ineffective, just 31% overall and that's with 36% from three.

Last media timeout of the game is at 3:08 and we lead 66-43. It'll be scrub time. A very nice bounce back win on the road after getting shellacked at home last week.

They hit their last three from beyond the arc to make the score look a little better. Final score: Appalachian State 71 - Furman 54. Morey with 24 points and 6-12 from beyond the arc. Ramage tailed off a bit at the end, but had a solid game inside. Emerick really needs to consistently score 10-15 points, he's definitely the most talented offensive guard we have outside of Morey. Furman was just 12-40 on two point shots, if it wasn't for a solid game by Madson, we really would have blown them out.

They finally took a loss, losing at home to Valdosta State in their last game, breaking a 9 game winning streak. They were 3-8 at one point, after playing a pretty tough non-con schedule. They have a road win against a decent Vanderbilt team as well. Their percentages aren't that great, but that's mainly because they took some pretty lopsided losses in the non-con.

PG: Stevens, 6'1", Junior: Started last year and averaged 7 points and 2.6 assists. A true point guard, who is at nearly 4 assists a game. Not a very good scorer, and is just 12-52 from three this year. Average defender.

SG: Tamayo, 6'4", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 11.6 points a game. Not shooting as well this season after a tremendous year last year percentage wise. Good shooter who doesn't do much else offensively but let it fly. Contributes on the glass.

SF: Osorio, 6'3", Freshman: Top 200 recruit, who is going to be a major problem in the Southern. Really good offensively already both inside and out. Struggles a bit from the line though, 63%. Competent defender. He'll be a monster in a few years.

PF: Hawkins, 6'8", Senior: 4 year starter. Averaged 11 and 5 last year. Talented offensive player who is weak on the glass. Shoots the three a lot for a big man, though his percentage hasn't been good this year, 29%.

C: Sasser, 6'10", Junior: Started last year, averaged 11.5 and 5.5. Another solid offensive big man, though he stays inside. Not much of a rebounder either and a bad defender.

Bench: Macaluso plays 22 minutes off the bench and scored 11.5 a game. He's a very aggressive three point shooter and puts up more than 8 three pointers a game. If he gets hot, he can bury a team pretty quick. He's just 5'11" and can't play point guard, so he's very much a tweener. Digiacomo is a solid backup point guard that would get more minutes on a lot of other teams. Griffis is a good shooter off the bench, but the addition of Osorio has cut his minutes from 15 to 4 last season to the this one. Montalvo is a 66'8" post that can defend a little, and score a little. Bosley is a 6'8" freshman who can rebound it, but not much else.

Coach: Chris Baker, 57 years old. 61/33/46/100. 281-246 career record. 5th season at Western Carolina.

The former Power conference coach (Missouri) looks like he's really going to have WCU cooking for the next few years.

They've got a lot of talent, and most of it is going to still be on the team the next few years, so they are probably the favorites in the conference for the next two seasons. They are weaker and thinner in the post, so that's where we need to try to take advantage. But, this will be a tough game, even at home.

With the way they can shoot it and score it, I'm worried about my 1-3-1 zone, it has not done well against the 3 this year. But, we're starting in it anyways, because I can't imagine man going well either with the trio of defenders we have on the court. Morey is back to 100% and I hope it stays that way.

15:26 left, we trail 7-9, already have some foul issues, with 5 as a team and Ramage the culprit of 2 of them.

Ramage now has 3 fouls and Morey has 2, and with 9:12 left we trail 13-16.

With 1:52 left, Bracey gets a steal but then blows the layup, it would have given us the lead. But, again, he misses it and they come down and nail a 3, and it's a 5 point swing. By the time we get to half time the score is Western Carolina 39 - Appalachian State 34 Morey came back in and picked up a 3rd foul as well and he's still scoreless as well.

With 11:52, things aren't looking good. We trail 43-57. More fouls in the second half, 6 team fouls already this half. 1 each for Morey and Ramage, giving them both 4, we'll try to keep them on the bench for a few more minutes.

          7:37 left, we trail 49-68,
Ramage has been awesome in his 6 minutes, 11 points on 4-5 shooting and 3 from the line. But, Morey is 0-8 from the field. It's too bad we're having such a bad game offensively, as the zone has been decent so far.

As soon as I say that, they get super hot and start knocking down shot after shot, we do better offensively during that stretch which is good, because we really would have been buried otherwise. With 3:13 left we trail 67-87. Morey is 0-11 from the field.

I'd hate to see WCU's field goal percentage the last 7 minutes, because we end losing by the final score of: Western Carolina 95 - Appalachian State 73. Really bad game offensively, and a collapse defensively. Morey's 0-13 is the worst game of his career, and has dropped his percentages below 50%. Hawkins tore us up inside, and they peppered us with threes. There seems to be a pretty solid gap between us and the top level teams. Chattanooga and WCU both waxed us on our homecourt.

            January 1971 (4-5)

When we lost this month, we REALLY lost, losing 4 of our 5 losses by double digits. Couldn't beat either of the good teams we played at home. Our success is pretty much keyed around Morey hitting 6 or 7 threes and scoring 25 points, when he does we compete, when he doesn't we struggle to score at a pace that makes up for our porous defense. Not the month I was hoping for, but at least we picked up some road wins to offset the home losses.

Ranked #1255. My scouts really like his defensive potential and his ability to rebound, though I'm a little off put by just 7 of those a game. But, hopefully the defense is true, because if it is, he's sure to carve out a role next year.

Their starting point guard Dungan was hurt last game and he's out for the remainder of the regular season at least. He was a 4 year starter averaged nearly 12 a game, plus was a solid defender. He'll be missed. His replacement is the walkon Mason who is pretty decent despite his lack of scholarship, though he's certainly worse than Dungan in about every way. They don't shoot the ball well, so I like our zone's odds of stopping them again. Really need to pick up this home win. Our RPI is still very high at 106, and we can't afford to lose to any of these 300+ teams, I'm hoping to get a tournament appearance of some sort this year.

                1970-71 Game 21 Results

Emerick gets called for travelling and it's our 6th turnover of the game and with 14:05 left, we trail 8-12. It's our 4th straight possession with a turnover. Bracey has a couple of threes to pace us.

7:32 left, and we lead 20-17. Bracey adds one more three and has 9 points, his career high is just 13. Ramage has 6 points and 6 boards. Morey is 1-4 from three and has 5 points total. Conner picks up his 2nd foul and will hopefully sit the rest of the half.

3:21 left and we have a 32-17 lead. Our zone defense has been great and they have yet to hit a 3. Ramage is up to 10 points and 8 boards, and the offense has done a solid job even with Morey on the bench with two fouls the last few minutes.

We don't do much down the stretch, but we only give up 4 points, so we can deal with it. The half time score is: Appalachian State 33 - Elon 21. Bracey leads us with 12, and is just one away from his career high. Ramage grabbed a few rebounds down the stretch and already has a double double in one half of play.

Bracey sinks a couple of three pointers in the first 3 minutes and Elon calls timeout with 17:05 left and we lead 41-23. Bracey has 18 and a career high.

Our reserves do a poor job and really struggle to score and after an Elon three pointer I call timeout with 10:04 left and we 44-35. All of our starters are back in the game, and I'm hoping Morey who is still stuck at 5 points can get it going.

7:08 left and we lead 59-46, the timeout worked and our offense woke up. Ramage is up to 19 and 13 and really is having a monster game. Ingram had 4 points in last little stretch as well.

Elon starts stroking some threes at the end, but luckily we're able to knock down a few ourselves, Morey hit a couple that salvaged his final line a bit. Ramage ends up with a monster line of 19 and 17. Final score: Appalachian State 71 - Elon 60. A sweep of Elon. Bracey didn't a player of the game award despite his 21 points and his 6-8 performance from beyond the arc. Nice to finally protect home court again after two straight losses in Boone.

                  1970-71 Game 22 Preview

                  February 6th, 1971 at Valdosta State Blazers (14-9) [7-2]
                  Conference: Southern
                  Location: Valdosta, Georgia
1969-70 record: 26-8 (13-3), lost in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament

Valdosta State is a 38 prestige school and the jewel of the Southern Conference, which made it all the more surprising when we destroyed them at our place last season. I'm sure their series of 1's and 0's are looking for revenge.

They are off to a very nice start in conference play and are currently riding a 5 game winning streak, with 4 of those victories being on the road. This is their first home game in about 3 weeks. They have excellent percentages, and don't seem to have too many weaknesses. They are bad from the free throw line, and don't offer much on the offensive glass, I guess.

PG: Peterson, 6'1", Freshman: Having a solid freshman year. Passing the ball well, (4.3 apg) and not struggling TOO much shooting it, though he's not much of a factor scoring wise. A bad defender and always will be.

SG: White, 6'2", Junior: Played 18 minutes a game last year and averaged 8 points a game. Started as a freshman, and is back in the starting lineup this season. Good three point shooter, and contributes on the glass. Poor defensively.

SF: Case, 6'5", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 10 and 6. Another no defending guard. Rebounds well and has a pretty decent offensive game, and he is aggressive.

PF: Bailey, 6'9", Senior: Started last year and averaged 14 and 6. Good, consistent scorer inside who does a solid job defensively.

C: Tinker, 7'1", Senior: Played 16 minutes a game last year and averaged 6 and 3.5. Has a lot of offensive talent, even if he is horrible defensively. Weak on the glass despite his size. Need Conner to get on the boards against these guys.

Bench: Arce is a 6'8" freshman post who can really defend, and has some scoring ability as well. He's playing 17 minutes a game and is a shoe-in to start next year. Riles is a freshman point guard at 6'4" who does everything decently, but doesn't have a ton of room to improve from here. A couple of other freshman wings in Davis and Harrison, both have some talent, I like Harrison more, but Davis is getting more playing time.

Coach: Jason March, 42 years old. 35/12/69/84, 40-17 career record. 2nd season at Valdosta State.

He won't be here long, he'll be off to another job before too long. Was only an assistant for a total of 5 years before getting his first head coaching gig.

They've got a good coach and a lot of depth for a Southern Conference team, and I do think they'll win. BUT, I like our chances a little bit, because their perimeter defenders are weak, and I think Conner and Ramage could have a strong game on the glass and we could make it interesting.

                    1970-71 Game 23 Results

15:39 left and we trail 10-11. Emerick and Morey both have early threes, but I'm feeling pretty good, because Valdosta State already has 6 fouls and an injury. So a few guys are on the bench right now, and their point guard White is banged up at 76%, and it looks like he'll continue to play.

Sanders hits a short jumper with 9:50 left and it gives us the lead 23-22 and Valdosta State calls time. We're really sharing the wealth offensively, as 6 of the 8 guys we've played have scored. Morey and Ramage, the usual culprits each have 5.

Last media timeout is at 3:39, and we trail 33-38. White, despite his injury issue is killing us, sinking, I believe, 3 from beyond the arc. Both teams are hitting from long range, and I like our odds better than theirs to keep shooting that way.

Their freshman point guard, Peterson hits a three at the buzzer to make the half time score: Valdosta State 49 - Appalachian State 40. The freshman has 10 points at half, just two shy of his career high. Tinker is the one destroying us inside though, he's got 14. Ramage picked up a 2nd foul right before half, but he and Conner are not having the rebounding advantage I was hoping they would. Ingrah, Bracey and Ramage lead us with 7 each. If we can tighten up the defense just a bit, we might be able to stay in it, I think we can score on them.

Second media time out is at 11:07 and we trail 58-68. We've switched to man and it seems to be doing a bit better. Ramage and Bracey lead us with 11 a piece, while Morey is just 2-9 and it's time to admit he's not the best shooter to ever live and maybe he just started the season super on fire.

3:45 media timeout, we just can't get it closer than 7, and they never extend it past 12, so there just wasn't much to update, but we now trail 68-79 Conner has a double double 10-10, but it isn't as good as Tinker's 20 and 9. Morey despite his shooting woes, does have 3 boards and 6 assists the latter being a career high. But, our front line has just been destroyed by Tinker and Bailey, which is not what I thought would happen.

It looked like they were going to extend the lead further than 12, but a quick flurry punctuated by back to back threes from Emerick and Bracey make the game 75-82 with 1:52 left, so it's at least a little interesting. We'll see if we can finally get it closer than 7.

The answer is: No, we will not. 76% White immediately hits a three and it was over from that point on. Final score: Valdosta State 89 - Appalachian State 75. Never could come close to stopping them, and our offense was underwhelming and we still hung around the majority of the game. A few bad games from Morey has him down to just 20.1 a game. On the bright side, Bracey is averaging 16 a game in his last 3. Surprised their front line got us that badly. I guess I shouldn't be though, we have garbage interior defenders, Woodworth should have played more.

They are off to a decent start by their standards. They've played solid defense percentage wise, but have really had a handful of rough games offensively.

PG: Greenhaw, 6'1", Senior: Started last year and averaged 11.4 points and 5.6 rebounds. Active guard who fills up the box score, but is a poor defender.

SG: Barr, 6'1", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 6 points a game. Shoots the ball pretty well and does a good job defensively, but does not shoot very often.

SF: Seng, 6'7", Senior: Started last year and averaged 11 a game. Having a pretty good year, gets to the basket and scores.

PF: Fluker, 6'9", Junior: Started last year, and averaged 5 points and 6 rebounds. Rebounds and is a decent passer for a big man, but struggles to score and not a good defender.

C: Bishop, 6'11", Junior: Started last year and averaged 16 points and 5 boards. Really nice offensive talent, but really stinks elsewhere

Bench: Davis is a 6'2" Freshman guard with some promise, but has struggled so far this year. Carrier is a good rebounding forward, but the 6'8" sophomore doesn't do much else. Greenfield is a 5'9" freshman with a nice jump shot, but only gets 9 minutes a game. Jones is another freshman guard that might play 5-8 minutes and might hit 0-1 threes.

Coach: Paul Cooper, 47 years old. 41/100/11/48, 3rd year at The Citadel, 127-181 career record.

Not a very good coach or recruiter, but boy can he scout 'em.

They bring back all 5 starters, so obviously some experience, but outside of their center, none of it is that scary offensively. If we contain him some, I like the chances of our guards getting some baskets.

                        1970-71 Game 23 Results

This is the start of a very winnable stretch of games, I think we have a solid chance in 7 of them.

First media timeout at 15:24 and we lead 15-3. Emerick, Bracey and Morey all have a three pointer a piece, and Conner has 4 points, 2 boards and 2 assists but also 2 fouls.

11:02 left and we lead 23-13. Sanders and Newlin have each contributed some points off the bench, and still just Conner has more than one field goal.

3:47 left and our lead is now just 34-29. Struggling to score and The Citadel has started to hit a few baskets and get some momentum offensively, I've switched to man defense, so we'll see if it throws them off. Emerick picked up his 2nd foul.

At half time, we've got a ball game: Appalachian State 41 - The Citadel 39. Our offense really seized up down the stretch and if it wasn't for a little 5 point flurry from Morey the last few minutes, we'd be trailing in this one. Our defense is just really, really bad. Morey has 10 points now, while Ramage is at 8. Bishop has 15 for the Bulldogs, and we haven't had much luck at all stopping him. We've been doubling teaming, I'll stop and see if that does anything.

15:17 left and we lead 57-46. Nice response to open the half. Ramage is up to 12 and 10, and I'll need to see how many double doubles he has this year. Morey has caught fire though and is up to 18 points, while Bishop is up 20 for The Citadel.

10:04 left, media timeout: We lead 64-51. Woodworth has been in more than usual this game, because he's got 9 points and 3 boards and 2 assists and is having one of the better games of his career. His career high in points is 11. Morey hit another three and is 5-13 from beyond the arc.

Bracey fouls out with 4:25 left and we lead 71-57, I didn't catch his stat line before I replaced him and now you have to wait. It wasn't much, though. Ingram will come in who is an excellent free throw shooter, 19-23 on the season.

We manage to milk the clock away with very few problems and come away with a solid victory: Appalachian State 77 - The Citadel 64. 25 points from Morey, to go with 5 boards and 5 assists.. Ramage with a strong 17 points and 14 boards. Woodworth matched his career high with 11 points. Ingram had 3 assists off the bench while Sanders really struggled. Outside of Bishop, The Citadel really struggled to score the ball.

College of Charleston (COC) is a 24 prestige team that has really fallen onto a rough season after losing their all time leading scorer Dorsey Bowser who was the only reason they were even competitive last year.

They are without the freshman guard Ung, who was having a nice year shooting the ball before his injury, he will be back in a few weeks after missing the last 15+ games. They have been really bad offensively and even worse defensively. They've yet to win a home game in 7 tries, I like our odds.

PG: Ko, 6'5", Freshman: Starting since Ung got hurt. Ko is a big guard with some real skill who will be a really good guard in this league in a few years. He scores, rebounds well for a guard and will be an okay defender too. Not a good three point shooter.

SG: Segarra, 6'2", Sophomore: Played 16 minutes a game last year, averaging 7 points. Decent combo guard that is expected to do too much.

SF: McKnight, 6'8", Senior: Started last year and averaged 12 points a game. Doesn't shoot the three and just works mid range and in. Decent scorer, but nothing too scary.

PF: Krantz, 6'8", Junior: Started last year and averaged 8 and 4.6. Bad defender with some offensive talent who gets pushed around some on the glass.

C: Brown, 6'10", Freshman: Promising looking freshman who is active on the offensive glass and has a decent offensive game. Bad defender and always will be.

Bench: Eggleston started last year and averaged 5 and 6, and he's a competent big man and nothing else. Numbers is another big man who has seen his playing time drop by about 9 minutes. He's a good defender and can score a little, but can't rebound at all. Hockett is a 6'7" senior wing who gets most of their reserve perimeter minutes. He can score it a little, and handles it well for a wing of his size, poor defender.

Coach: Justin Jordan, 61 years old. 34/70/65/11, 60-62 career record. 4th season at College of Charleston.

Okay coach that at this age probably won't move beyond this level before he retires.

They are more talented than their record indicates, but they can't defend and they are pretty spotty offensively. Plus, there's no way we can be their first home win, right? They haven't won a game since January 2nd, oddly enough on the road at Valdosta State.

10:04 left and we lead 30-20. Morey has really struggled, 2-7 from the field, but it hasn't mattered so far as several guys have been very efficient, but none more than Sanders who is 3-3 from the field with a three pointer and a converted and-one for 8 points in just 3 minutes.

3:32 left and we lead 40-24. Ramage has 7 points, 8 boards and 3 assists. Emerick and Morey are a combined 2-11 from three which I can't imagine will continue much longer.

They hit a shot at the buzzer to cap a mini-run to make the half time score: Appalachian State 48 - College of Charleston 35. A trio of starters, Ramage, Bracey and Morey all picked up their 2nd foul during the last 3 minutes of the 1st half. I can't expect the contributions from the ancillary players again, but I have to think Emerick and Morey will wake up some in the second half and sink some baskets.

11:48 left and we lead 63-49, pretty well maintained the same lead throughout. Ramage picked up two fouls very quickly and has been sitting since the 19 minute mark. Sanders has thrown in a few more points and has 13. Morey's now 3-8 from three and has 12 points.

4:49 left and we've jumped out to an 83-61 lead. We have 4 guys with 13-15 points, Bracey, Emerick, Sanders and Morey.

I call timeout to bring in Gattis and Younger who have hardly played this year, even by walk on standards . We lead 93-67 with 1:55 left.

They do a fine job in polishing the game by keeping the score the exact same and we win by the final: Appalachian State 93 - College of Charleston 67. CoC just stinks. Their front line had their way with us for a while, but they just quit giving them the ball and Brown was in foul trouble most of the game. Ingram and Sanders both with excellent games off the bench, and Ingram's currently averaging 14.4 points per 30, which is 2nd best on the team. His defense is horrible, but he can score it and pass it. He's going to be a good offensive player. 13-27 from three is hard to beat.

February 15th, 1971 at North Carolina Central Eagles (6-17) [5-6]
                              Conference: Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
                              Location: Durham, North Carolina

A quick little non-conference jaunt; NCCU is a 14 prestige school who is coming off back to back atrocious years, and it's made their current conference record relatively good.

This is a return game in a home and home we scheduled prior to last season, the game doesn't let you pick when the return game is, thus why they are in the middle of the conference season. Pretty rough percentages and they've had a handful of real defensive meltdowns, which gives me some hope right away, besides their bad record that is.

PG: Mattingly, 5'9", Junior: Hardly played last year. Decent ball skills, but can't score and just isn't any good.

SG: Belle, 6'2", Senior: Averaged 16 minutes a game and scored 7 points a game. Good offensive player who can pass it a little, not too bad defensively.

SF: Wilson,, 6'7", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 11 a game. Having a very strong year this season offensively. Can score at every level, and should be pretty high up in the NCCU record books by the time he's through, he's horrible defensively and on the glass though.

PF: Trantham, 6'7", Junior: Played 9 minutes a game last year with an average of 1.3 points. Active on the glass and at least present defensively.

C: Curcio, 6'9", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 5.4 and 6.5 last season. Good on the offensive glass, okay defender, not much offensively.

Bench: Brogan is a 6'7" do nothing wing that will probably go for 12 and 8 now that I said that. Frisbee is a 6'2" freshman point guard who has had 8 starts this season. He's aggressive and should turn into a good player in the MEAC. Fuentes is a sieve defensively but can score it a bit at 6'3". Gentry is a very good defender at 6'7", and rebounds well to boot, but is a useless offensive player.

Coach: Robin Keffer, 54 years old. 34/64/9/73, 78-126 career record. 1st season at NCCU.

The last coach got the boot, and Keffer, an assistant at North Carolina State grabbed the job. He had been an assistant for the last 11 seasons before that he was the head coach at Harvard from 52-59. He was an assistant there before he got the job, and then oddly one after he was fired. I would like to see a situation where the new head coach makes the previous one an assistant.

They are not very good, and lack any real offensive punch outside of Wilson. But, we're at their place and my defense stinks, so crazier FBCB things have happened for sure.

A very bad start, I call timeout with 16:37 left and we trail 4-14. Not a lot going on offensively for us and Wilson has 7 quick points for the Eagles.

11:10 left and we trail 19-29. It was 12-27 at one point, so we've made some progress and hope is still there. Morey finally hit his first three pointer and is 1-4 from beyond the arc for the game.

7:41 left, we trail 23-36, their backup Frisbee is killing me and has 12 points, at least a couple of three pointers in there too. They are shooting out of their minds, and I think it will regress some and we just need to stay within striking distance before half. Emerick picked up his 2nd foul.

We get it down to 6, but they snap off a 5-0 run and I call timeout after a Wilson 3 makes it 30-41 with 5:29 left.

We are within striking distance at halftime, it's a pretty long strike though. The score is: North Carolina Central 53 - Appalachian State 42. They have been ridiculous from the field, 59.5% and we've managed to stick around despite 9 turnovers as well. The first 5 minutes will be pretty big, we are flat out better than them, and I think we're capable of making this deficit up in a hurry if our defense figures things out.

Emerick hits a three with 14:37 left and NCCU calls timeout because the score is 64-59. We just sort of tread water for most of the first 5+ minutes before a quick explosion gets the lead down to 5. Morey has 13 to lead us, but it is on 10 shots. Ramage has 11 and 8.

Ingram nails a three pointer and ties the game at 66 with 12:06 left and NCCU calls another timeout right before the media timeout they are so desperate to stop the game. We've heated up a lot and they've slowed down quite a bit as well and it is a brand new ball game.

A very long stretch with no play stoppage and a whole lot of offense and when it all shakes out we lead 85-80 with 5:02 left. Ramage has been destroying them, he's 9-10 from the field, 3-4 from the line for 21 points and 12 rebounds to boot. Emerick also had a nice run and has 12 points and 5 assists for the game. A lot of tired players were out there, so I have Ramage, Bracey and Emerick all on the bench currently resting. There will be another media timeout pretty quick. Woodworth, coming off a great game, hasn't come in yet. But, will now to play defense for about a minute and a half hopefully.

Morey sinks a three pointer to give us a lead, but Belle hits a three and is fouled by Emerick, he then hits the free throw to convert the 4 point play and with 2:39 left we lead 95-94 and we just can't shake them. Ramage is at 21 and 12. Morey is up to 19 points and has 4 assists too. Emerick with that last foul has 4.

1:24 left, same story, can't shake them and after two Wilson free throws that get him up to 25 points, we lead 101-100. Emerick has fouled out and I've decided to go with Ingram over Newlin, since Ingram's got 10 points in just 11 minutes, but I'll try to sub offense for defense too. NCCU is at 56% from three, I'll be interested to see their final totals. We've gotten up to 56.5% from the field total.

A couple of Ramage free throws gets us up by three, but a Wilson three off of an offensive rebound ties it all up at 103 with 34 seconds left. I call timeout, and I decide to put on the use clock setting, and hope we still put up a shot. I just don't want them to shoot too early and give them a chance and worse case scenario we head to OT.

Morey puts up a three pointer with about 5 seconds left, misses it, but Ramage is there under the basket for the rebound and quick put back at the buzzer to give us the win. Final score: Appalachian State 105 - North Carolina Central 103. A barnburner of a game with some NBA like box scores in the stat lines with the pace and efficiency on the court. Ramage finishes with 27 and 13, none more important than the last two points and last rebound. He was 11-12 from the field, tough to beat. Morey ended up with 22 points and 6-12 from beyond the arc. Woodworth in his one minute had a rebound and two assists. Emerick and Sanders both with very nice contributions. 15-27 from three for NCCU, our defense has really been playing bad. The 1-3-1 zone magic I thought I had is long gone.
