    1970-71 Season Recap (20-12) [10-6]

A definite improvement from last year and not one I expected since we lost so many players off of last year's team, but the story has to be all about Morey who's initial start got me a little too hopeful, but even what he settled into is an excellent player. Happy to have him 3 more years and eager to see what kind of numbers he accumulates. Ramage had a really strong senior season and typically at least one other guy would chip in a dozen. We had a few injuries, but none bigger than to Emerick who was our best passer and second best scorer. Losing Ramage hurts, but pretty much everyone else back has me optimistic for next season.

He really wasn't that bad, I thought he would play a bit this year as the 5th post, but those situations never really came up and when they did it made more sense to play Clegg. Oh, well.

Really strong defensive post who could block some shots. Wasn't much offensively or on the glass, and his +/- numbers were never any good, but it seems like he had some pretty good stretches at times.

          Coaching staff changes:

I fire Neal Carpenter, our recruiting coordinator, after one year and put out a ton of minimum, $30,000 offers.

He was a 38 rated recruiter, and we end up with someone even worse in Carlos Waardenburg who is a 30 recruiter.

            1971-72 Schedule

A lot tougher schedule this year, with 2 power schools, UNC and Mississippi State and road games at Richmond and Charlotte as well. Odd bit of conference scheduling in that I start the conference slate off with back to back games against Valdosta State. Yet again, I end the season with a non-conference game.

              First Recruiting Update

We've got 3 scholarships to give this season, we're graduating two posts and a point guard, so that's what we're looking to sign this year, I'm prioritizing JUCO help, as I don't think we have ready made replacements for Conner and Emerick when they graduate.

One scholarship filled so far, and it's by a JUCO post:

The JUCO out of Virginia looks like a top notch rebounder than can score some baskets inside as well. My scouts don't care too much for his defense, but his job is to replace Conner next year and see how many double doubles he can rack up.

I feel good about a JUCO point guard, and we're scrounging around for a freshman post to round out the class.

Had a strong first year out of JUCO ball, a bit inconsistent, but he can shoot it and is a solid scorer all around. Hopefully his passing ticks up a bit, but I'm hoping to rely on him more as a secondary scorer, so the optimist in me would like 13 points and 4 assists or so.

Walk on who has played 3 games each of the last 3 years. Shoots the ball well and can play the point if he has to. A good walk on to have, just no room for playing time in Boone.

Ended up starting quite a few games after an injury to Flores. He had a really strong year shooting the ball and had some very nice shooting percentages that I don't expect to hold up. He doesn't shoot much, and is okay enough defensively and on the glass that he's a really excellent role player to have.

He did not have a good year shooting the ball and should be much better than those sorry percentages. He is our best perimeter defender by miles and miles and will be on the court a lot because of it.

Levi Gattis, 6'6", 230, Junior, Charlotte, North Carolina

The walk on that has played a little more. 48 minutes in two seasons and 29 points and 11 boards to go with them. He's a real offensive talent, and rebounds well enough that I kind of want to play him. But, he's such a horrible rebounder that he even makes Ingram look passable.

Speaking of, he ended up playing quite a bit when Flores was sidelined. As mentioned, he's a horrible defender (better than Gattis tho), but he was very aggressive and had a solid year offensively as a freshman. When everyone is healthy, he's squeezed out of the rotation a bit, but you know he won't be afraid to shoot it when he's in.

He fell off a bit as the season went on and didn't keep the ridiculous pace he was on the first 15 games, but he's a stud and I'm hoping for 34+ minutes a game and 22+ points. He shoots the lights out, 143-336 last year for 42.6%. It was the 2nd most in a season by a Mountaineer, behind David Gonzalez and his 168(!) in 1957. He's already 35th all time in three pointers made and by the end of the year if he's health, he'll be pushing the top 5. Not a great defender, can't really play point, though he might see some time there this season, but I'll overlook it all for another 20 point season.

Had a pretty quiet freshman season. Grabbed some late season starts after the Emerick injury in the postseason. Steady guard whose point guard skills are slowly coming around. Solid shooter. Will see backup point guard minutes yet again.

Lyle Buchanan, 6'5", 216, Freshman, Manitowoc, Wisconsin

The freshman wasn't the defensive stud I was hoping for. Though he's solid there. His rebounding eventually could be a major impact, but he's pretty raw there still. Okay three point shooter that isn't afraid to attack the basket too. He's volunteering to redshirt, and I might take him up on it. Gattis and Younger will do fine in an pinch, and Buchanan still has some developing to do. But, do I want him for 5 years? Will I even be here for 5 years? The tentative plan is to redshirt him.

It's too bad he's already a senior. He had a very strong year his first year out of the JUCO ranks. He's a dominate force on the glass and his offense is good by default, since he's 7'4", I am getting spoiled by having a 7'4" monster rebounder.

The former walk on is finally getting his shot at the starting lineup and some real playing time. He was strong last year, scoring the ball well and doing a decent job defensively and on the glass. I wish he would have redshirted his freshman year when he played 2 minutes. Oh, well. I'm hoping to get 12 and 6 or so out of him this season.

Amos Garcia, 6'8", 220, Junior, Harvey, Louisiana

Very disappointed in the JUCO transfer. His rebounding is underwhelming like I thought it would be, but his defense which I had high expectations for is nothing more than adequate. He has no offensive skills, so his role will be adequate defense and rebounding in emergency situations.

The Aussie saw a handful of minutes last year. He's an interesting player, he can rebound it well and has some scoring ability as well. He'll never be able to defend, but if he gets 20 minutes a game, he'll put up some numbers. He might have a chance at being the backup center this season.

Daniel Haddock, 6'7", 226, Freshman, Gastonia, North Carolina

The freshman looks like a post scoring wunderkind, he's maxed out inside. He'll never defend, so throw that out the window now. But, in a few years, his rebounding will improve to adequate levels and his passing should develop into something worth watching as well. He'll backup Sanders, and I think he could be a 6-10 point a game guy right away.

Robert Russell, 6'9", 212, Freshman, Mcconnelsville, Ohio

Skinny freshman who is still a bit raw, but will turn into a decent defense and rebounding big man, with just enough offense to keep teams honest. He's another guy volunteering to redshirt, and I think I'll take him up on it too. If Russell doesn't play this year, then that means Clegg and Haddock will have a lot of weight on their shoulders, because I'd really prefer to play Garcia as little as possible.

Our starting lineup to begin the season will be:

                  PG: Bradley Emerick, Senior
                  SG: Elliott Morey, Sophomore:
                  SF: David Flores, Junior
                  PF: Joe Sanders, Senior
                  C: Travis Conner, Senior

I've got pretty high expectations for this season, we've got talent and experience. A tough non-conference schedule, so there might be some bumps there, but I expect when we get to conference play, there won't be many teams that can match up with us.

PG: Booker, 5'10", Senior: Played 19 minutes a game last year and 8 starts. Attacks the basket and shoots low percentages. Not very good.

SG: Sarmiento, 6'2", Sophomore: Played 106 minutes total last year. Good mid range jump shot, but garbage elsewhere.

SF: White, 6'5", Junior: Started last year and averaged 9.5 and 5.4, their lone returning starter. He's probably primed for some big numbers this year. He can attack the basket pretty well, and I assume he'll get a lot of shots on this team.

PF: Coleman, 6'9", Junior: Played 98 minutes last year. Has some offensive talent and holds his own defensively, even if he can't rebound at all.

C: Adams, 6'10", Junior: Played 15 minutes a game last year and averaged 4 and 3. Scores some, rebounds a little, no defense.

Bench: Robertson is a sophomore combo guard that can shoot is pretty well, ratings wise, and defends. I'd be starting him at the 1 or 2 if I were in charge of FAMU. Melgar his a freshman wing who has some talent, but is stuck between being a 1 and a 2. Moody is a good rebounder, but doesn't do much else at 6'10". Short and Ramon are two sophomore wings that both have a little offensive talent.

Coach: Tony Forsyth, 69 years old. 59/85/73/3, 95-210 career record. 11th season at Florida A&M.

He's probably overstayed his welcome and likely won't be there too much longer.

This is a pretty sorry team and it makes them an excellent team to open the season with. Barring injury, I'm going to to try to redshirt both Russell and Buchanan.

                      1971-72 Game 1 Results

Second media timeout of the season at 11:19 and we lead 21-14. Both teams are hitting some shots, both right around 54%. Morey already has 9 points, but 4 of them are from the free throw line. Conner is at 4 and 6.

7:53 left, we lead 30-18. Morey and Conner are still both at their stat lines they had in the last update. It's been a group effort, but Sanders has a few buckets and has 6. Flores has two fouls.

At half time we lead by the score of: Appalachian State 42 - Florida A&M 24. Morey leads us with 11, but has just 1 three. Emerick picked up his 2nd foul before the half. Bracey has 5 points and 2 rebounds and a steal in his 12 minutes. Our defense, which is a 2-1-2 zone this year, has been pretty decent so far, but I can't underestimate how untalented Florida A&M is.

16:21 and FAMU calls timeout, because we're up 55-30 and have been turning them over and nailing threes and just having a good old time. Morey and Emerick both have threes, and Emerick got a steal and a fast break dunk to trigger the timeout.

I call timeout with 10:24 and our lead is now 61-44. We've clammed up offensively, and let FAMU crawl back into it a little bit, I'm still not worried because they are so bad, but I'd like to put my foot down in the next few minutes. Sanders has 4 fouls.

Last media timeout at 3:39 and we've extended the lead back out to 72-49. Backups will come in.

Gattis actually goes down with an injury in the last 30 seconds, but he was able to stay on the court to finish out the game. We win the opening game of the 1971-72 season by the score of: Appalachian State 76 - Florida A&M 53. 4 of the 5 starters in double figures, and the one that wasn't, Conner snared 14 rebounds. Haddock, the freshman post had 6 points and 8 boards in 16 minutes in his debut. A 2-23 performance from three for the Rattlers.

PG: Norris, 6'2", Freshman: One of two freshman point guards, I'd start the other one, personally. Norris is more of a passer, but can't shoot it.

SG: Dunton, 6'1", Junior: Started last year and averaged 11.6, 5.3 and 2.8. Solid defender who has some offensive bite to him. Easily better than any perimeter player that Florida A&M had.

SF: Gall, 6'6", Senior: Played 6 minutes a game last year. Has some talent, can attack the basket and will hit a three every once in a while. Okay defender.

PF: Ice, 6'8", Junior: Played 6 minutes a game last year. Not good.

C: Grube, 6'9", Senior: 4 year starter and averaged 10 and 7 last year. Can't defend, but he can score it and will be active on the glass, especially offensively.

Bench: Stotts is the other freshman that I'd play. He's better defensively and he can really shoot the three, he's not much of a passer though. Brady is a shot blocking big man with a developing offensive game, has some talent. Ingham is a 6 foot shooting guard with a nice outside shot. Lacombe might play and he's a 4/3 hybrid with a little bit of versatility, if he could shoot, he'd be an interesting player.

Coach: Stephan Blevins, 50 years old. 46/38/76/100, 101-93 career record. 7th season at Savannah State.

He's a pretty good coach, and has never had a bad season, he's just never been able to get over the hump. He'd be just fine at a higher level.

This will be a much tougher game than our last one, but I still think we're quite a bit better than them.

                          1971-72 Game 2 Results

11:54 left and we lead 13-11. Emerick has 9 of our points on 3 from beyond the arc. It's been ugly otherwise.

Morey finally hits his first three with 5:40 left and it ties the game up at 22. But, their center, who I didn't even mention could shoot threes, hits a three in response and he leads the Tigers with 10 points. Our front line, Conner and Sanders both have 2 fouls, which means Amos Garcia is going to have to get a few minutes.

Grube hits a shot at the buzzer and it gives us a half time score of: Savannah State 41 - Appalachian State 33. We are just 2-7 from the line to counter balance our 5-8 from three. Morey is 2-4 and Emerick 3-4, and they are the only three pointers we've put up so far, which is unlike us. I'll start the second half in man and see if anything changes. By the end of the first half, the entire starting lineup has picked up 2 fouls.

Morey picks up his 4th foul with 15:20 left, but we've managed to take the lead, 45-44. Sanders has been very good to start the half, and he's now 5-7 from the field for 10 points, plus 5 boards.

I call timeout with 8:05 left and we trail 54-55, Morey's still on the bench, but will come in the next few minutes. Sanders is at 14 and 6, it's just too bad his stamina is so bad.

Morey gets called for a charge and that's 5, with 6:19 left, and we trail 57-60.

We're fouling a whole lot and falling a part down the stretch a bit, and we trail 62-67 with 3:47, it would be by more if they were hitting free throws. Flores has fouled out as well and we're going with an Ingram and Bracey backcourt.

An Emerick basket is followed by Sanders making one of two from the line, we get the offensive rebound on the miss and it results in two Ingram free throws and it's all tied up at 67 with 2:54 left. Savannah State calls timeout.

Emerick hits a couple of free throws with 59 seconds left to take the lead 71-70. We keep messing up, but are making up for it by getting offensive rebounds and hitting free throws.

They elect to foul and Emerick hits a couple more free throws to give himself 22 points and us the 73-70 lead with 34 seconds left. We foul ourselves for no good reason and it will become a battle of free throws down the stretch. They hit theirs and Ingram goes just 1 of 2 from the line and with 14 seconds left we lead 74-72.

They call a foul on Emerick, his 4th, with 7 seconds left and it sends the freshman Stotts to the line.

He makes the first, but misses the second and Conner snags the rebound with 5 seconds left. I had erroneously called timeout about 10 seconds prior, and the game then gave me the timeout which kind of stinks because now I have to inbound it. Luckily, we get it in and Emerick is fouled and he hits both, and there is so little time on the clock it didn't matter anyways. We win by the score of Appalachian State 76 - Savannah State 73. Emerick turns out to be the hero once again with 24 points and 3 assists. I don't expect him to average 20.5 the rest of the way, but I do think he can be at 15 or so and if/when Morey rounds into shape, we'll have a pretty solid backcourt. Sanders had a strong game with 17 and 8. Grube really tore us up, but good centers have seemed to the last two years, so I'm used to it.

North Carolina (UNC) is an 86 prestige team that has missed the postseason two years in a row now after making it in some form since 1935, the vast majority of which were NCAA appearances. It's the first time since the 1910's they've missed the postseason more than two years in a row. They were the NCAA champs in 1953-54.

In the interest of time, I'm going to stop giving such detailed previews to the teams we're playing unless it's a postseason game. Same for the updates, I'll just play the game and then write a quick recap, except for, again, postseason games.

UNC is loaded this year, they've got offensive talent all across the starting lineup that is directed very well by a very talented point guard in Yazzie. They are just average defensively, but I'm afraid they are going to tee-off on us. I think they go 9 deep before I see a guy that I'm sure wouldn't start for me.

Their coach Hollis Currin is a stud who came to UNC, his alma mater, from Pacific, which was a mid-major power for decades before going to the Pac-12. He needs to have a good year this year, or he'll be getting the boot.

I think we're in a lot of trouble. These are not the teams we are well-equipped to beat. They are a far superior version to what we want to do.

We are able to throw in some points at the end to make the score look slightly more aesthetically pleasing and end up losing by the score of North Carolina 99 - Appalachian State 80 We had some decent offensive performances. 30 points from Morey, but he was 7-21 from three, and as a team we finished 11-38. Sanders was very active and finished with 16 and 8, but left a lot of points the line. We just couldn't stop UNC and they had their way with us from the beginning and we never threatened. Looking forward to being on a team where I have that level of talent.

                                November 27th, 1971 at Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans (4-0)
                                Conference: Sun Belt
                                Location: Little Rock, Arkansas
                                1970-71 record: 15-16 (8-10)

Arkansas Little Rock (UALR) is a 42 prestige school that has always been near the bottom of the Sun Belt, and frankly should probably be a candidate for a demotion to the Southland or something similar. Just 3 NCAA appearances all time, the last in 1959-60, when they lost in 1st round to cap off a 26-8 (15-3) season. They return 3 starters from last year's team.

Hite is an excellent scoring guard that put up 18 a game last year, and mainly does it all from attacking the basket. He's a tremendous rebounder at 5'11", too. Their starters are forgettable until you get to their center Pomerleau. He went for 18 and 7 last year, and he's off to a bit of slow start this year at just 15.5 and 8. But, he's got a ton of talent and is a monster on the offensive glass. Conner will have his hands full.

They've got a solid defensive coach in Danny Jaques who in his first year at UALR. He's an ace recruiter and should get some talent to Little Rock as well. He spent the last dozen years as an assistant for various power 5 schools. Prior to that he was the head coach at Eastern Illinois from 1953-1959, before getting fired after 5 mediocre seasons.
