    November 1970 (3-1)

A pretty promising start, should be 4-0, that was a pretty bad loss to a bad ETSU team. Morey has been the main focus point in my game updates so certainly has to be the main thing here. The freshman is scoring 26 points a game, good for 7th in the nation and has touched exactly 30 points three times. Ramage has been okay, and if Flores can really keep up a 10 point average this season I'll be thrilled, because he's going to see 30+ minutes. When Conner returns to the starting lineup I think he'll be very helpful, and Sanders is doing a fine job filling in his minutes. The shooting will fall off at some point, but I'll keep riding this wave until it does.

    November Recruiting

2 more commitments and we're scrounging for someone for our last scholarship, and we'll see how it goes now that we can dedicate to the whole budget to it. A Juco post probably makes the most sense.

As for the guys who will be joining the squad next year.

Skinny post looks like a strong defensive, rebounding oriented big man which is something we really need with the plethora of no defensive playing, no rebounding guards we have. I don't think he'll be much offensively, but he defends and rebounds and looks like he'll hit his free throws too.

Plucked him all the way out of Wisconsin. My scout really likes his defense, but I really like his rebounding numbers, 13 a game. Offensively, he won't ever be much, but if he truly can be a defensive oriented wing that can grab 7 rebounds a game, he'll carve out a spot eventually, though it may take a few years.

Neither guy will be a key player for a team, hopefully, but both could be very strong role players at this level and give us a much needed defense and rebounding component.

      1970-71 Game 5 Preview

December 2nd, 1970 vs Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (3-2)
      Conference: Independent
      Location: West Palm Beach, Florida
      1969-70 record: 12-18

Palm Beach Atlantic (PBA) is a 21 prestige team that made it all the way to 30 in prestige back in 65 after 5 straight appearances in the CBI tournament. They probably deserved to be put into a conference then, but I wasn't paying attention back then. I'll try to remember to add them in the next few years, probably the Atlantic Sun. They haven't been great the last 4 seasons, and have finished under .500 each year, thus the 9 point drop in prestige.

They've played good defense this year, and teams have struggled to score on them. And Morey can't shoot 55% from three forever, so, something has to give this game.

PG: Valenzuela, 5'8", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 10.6 points and 3.6 assists. Good point guard, passes it well and has a nice three point shot. Off to a great start this year, over 50% from the field, after two straight years of about 35%.

SG: Scalf, 6'2", Sophomore: Played 6 minutes a game last year. 3 and D guy who can pass a little bit. Only 2-11 from three so far this season, so not very aggressive shooting the ball.

SF: Bradenburg, 6'6", Freshman: Playing a lot of minutes right away and doing well with almost 13 points a game. Scores by getting inside, and is just 1-12 from three this year. Okay defender who will get some steals. These guys have a talented backcourt, they should be in a conference.

PF: Jessie, 6'8", Freshman: More offensive talent. Can score inside, though he's not getting a lot of shots right now. Nuisance on the offensive glass. Will eventually be a decent defender.

C: Reynolds, 6'10", Senior: Played 16 minutes a game last year. Former JUCO recruit who has a soft touch inside and is okay on the glass.

Bench: Howell is a freshman guard. He's 6'2" and eventually will be a decent guard, but he isn't there yet. Turner is a very similar player to our own Gattis, all offense, zero defense, but even better offensively. Turner is averaging 5.8 points in 6.4 minutes to give you an idea. Kopecky is Czech and a freshman. He'll be a solid contributor down the line, and to be fair he's holding his own right now.

Coach: David Ballard, 41 years old. 52-73 career record. 5th season at PBA.

Maxed out scout and really solid defensive coach. Not much elsewhere. Was part of a good program at South Florida before heading to PBA. He's got some good young talent, and will be in a major conference soon, so despite his rough start, he could be successful and somewhere else in 3-4 years.

        1970-71 Game 5 Results

Conner's still not quite 100%, but he will be my next game. He'll come off the bench again, and hopefully play 15-20 minutes.

PBA has come out on fire and I call timeout with 15:10, right after a media timeout, because we trail 10-17. Our post players are already racking up fouls. Woodworth has 2, Ramage and Sanders both have one.

The freshman Dwain Newlin finally connects on his first three pointer. It's part of a nice stretch where we get the score to 22-28 with 10:21 left. We trailed by as many as 13. PBA has finally missed a few shots in a row and we've taken advantage. Flores has a three as well and 6 points total.

Sanders finds Ramage inside for the easy bucket, and we've cut their lead to 1, we trail 32-33 with 5:02 left. I misclick and bring Ingram in instead of Bracey, but it works fine as Ingram hits a 3 and gets a steal. Emerick has 7 points and 3 assists and is playing very well.

PBA hits a shot at the buzzer and it gives them 50 at half, which is a few more than we've got. Palm Beach Atlantic 50 - Appalachian State 42. The defense has not been good. The man nor the 1-3-1 zone. PBA is 7-10 from three, so I know that won't last. Ramage has 12 and 4, Morey has 9 and is 1-5 from three.

11:54 left, and we're about to get toasted. We trail 53-66 and while PBA isn't shooting 70% from three anymore (just 60%), they are pretty well doing what they want offensively. Valenzuela has 19 and Bradenburg 14. Ramage and Morey each have 14 points. Flores has been shooting a ton in the second half and zero of them have gone in.

7:59 left, we trail 61-72. A tiny bit of progress. Morey hit another three, his 3rd, and has 17 points now. Flores is 1-7, and 1-5 from beyond the arc. The defense has finally settled in a bit.

Sanders goes on a 5-0 personal run, and with 6:44, PBA calls timeout and we trail 69-74. He's up to 10 points. Bracey just had a big steal, and he hasn't scored, but he has 4 rebounds and 2 assists off the bench.

Things aren't looking too good at 3:36, they keep hitting threes and extending the lead. We trail 74-82. Ramage is up to 15.

Back to back threes by Morey (22 points) and Emerick (12), gets us to 80-82 with 2:53 left and PBA calls timeout. I bring Newlin for defense and to get Emerick a quick breather.

A ton of missed shots by both teams, the score doesn't change for the next 2+ minutes. Morey turns it over with a bad pass, but their freshman reserve center Kopecky blows the layup on the other end and we have the ball with 38 seconds left, trailing 80-82. I have 3 timeouts, so I use one.

The starting lineup is in the game, with the exception of Conner for Woodworth.

The inbounds play works, as Ramage gets an open shot from the top of the key and buries it, tying the game at 84 with 34 seconds left. Ramage is at 17 now.

PBA holds for the last shot, and Valenzuela misses a three pointer, and we're heading to overtime: Appalachian State 82 - Palm Beach Atlantic 82. A very nice comeback. We'll carry that same lineup into OT, though I think Emerick will probably need a rest at some point.

With 3:45 left, we trail 82-85. Valenzuela has a three and now 26 points, but we get lucky and Scalf, a decent free throw shooter, misses both at the line.

We don't score in the OT until 1:46 when Ramage makes a basket and gets fouled, and then sinks the free throw afterwards. And amazingly, besides the earlier PBA three, they haven't scored either. It's tied at 85.

Newlin, who is now out of the game, fouls PBA, and they hit one of two free throws and we trail 85-86 with 1:36 left. Flores gets the board, tosses it inside to the 7'4" Conner who puts in his first basket of the game to give us the lead 87-86. Another foul, but we get lucky and PBA misses the front end. Ramage grabs his 9th board to go with 20 points. Gives it to Emerick who finds Morey at the top of the key and he buries it. With 1:16 left we lead 90-86 and Morey has 25 points.

PBA gets a basket on their next possession to make it 88-90, but it takes a long time and there is 45 seconds left on the clock. They decide to foul, they get Flores, our best free throw shooter, but he only hits one of them. 91-88 with 41 seconds left.

Scalf nails a three with 11 seconds left to tie it up at 91. 'm really interested to know how many threes they've hit. They are at 60.9 as a team right now.

So, we've got the ball with 11 seconds left, Emerick gets the ball rushes up court, finds Ramage in the corner who takes a quick shot and buries it at the buzzer and we win the game on Ramage's 21st and 22nd points of the game. Final score: Appalachian State 93 - Palm Beach Atlantic 91. A really good game, and another pretty solid comeback. We trailed by 12 with 3:55 left, and besides an early lead of 8-7, I don't believe we lead again until 1:35 in the OT session. Morey gets the PotG according to the AI, but it has to go to Ramage, who has 22 and 9, and the two big baskets, the first to tie it and send it to OT, and then the game winner at the buzzer.

PBA ends up going 14-23 from three, but it seemed like more. Valenzuela and Scalf combined for 13-18 from beyond the arc and were both terrorizing me the whole game.

          1970-71 Game 6 Preview

December 7th, 1970 at Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (2-3)
          Conference: Southeastern
          Location: Ruston, Louisiana
          1969-70 record: 16-16 (10-8)

Louisiana Tech is an 80 prestige school, that has had a rough 3 years, but is coming out of a stretch from 1937-1965, where they made the NCAA tournament about 90% of the time and several deep runs, a handful of final fours and a championship in 1942-43 to cap off a 34-4 (14-2) season. They won the championship as a member of the WAC and moved to the SEC in 1947-48. 38 NCAA appearances total.

They don't have their starting SF, Cleveland who is a pretty strong offensive wing, even if his season got off to a bad start percentage wise. He's out for another month.

PG: Runnels, 6'6", Senior: Started last year and averaged 12.5 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Big guard that does about everything well. Defends, passes it okay, and has a lot of talent offensively. Doesn't rebound despite his size.

SG: Schaller, 6'4", Freshman: 5 star, top 25 recruit out of Louisiana. Really good shooter, who if he sticks around will put up major numbers. Passes it well, too.

SF: Ledrut, 6'6", Freshman: Frenchman who is starting with the injury to their normal SF Cleveland. He's got talent as well, though he's not on the same level as Schaller. Active on the offensive glass and does an okay job defensively and he will score.

PF: Klotz, 6'7", Junior: Started last year and averaged 8 and 6. Strong defender, even better on the glass. His offensive game is nice, but he's undersized and has gotten off to a bad start, shooting under 40%.

C: Duclos, 6'8", Sophomore: Played 7 minutes a game last year. Weak defender, okay on the glass and a versatile if unspectacular offensive game.

Bench: Nelson is their 6'3" backup point guard, he has real true point guard skills and can defend but can't shoot or score. Edison is 6'10" and is their main post reserve. The sophomore has a nice touch inside but as a walk-on, isn't quite up to play 17 minutes a night in the SEC. Weak bench, especially with Cleveland out.

Coach: Michael Stevenson, 63 years old. 297-289 career record. 1st season at La Tech.

Strong coach, who is maxed out defensively. He was at Indiana State, Akron and Maine prior to getting the La Tech job. Had a decent amount of success at all of them, but only one NCAA appearance, which was last year for Indiana State. Had a rough 4 year stint with Bethune Cookman has a young coach that got him fired after 4 years, and has a big impact on his career win-loss record.

They've got some real power 5 talent, they just don't have any depth. So, these games can always go one way or the other. If they get into foul trouble and we actually get 2 or 3 guys into their bench, we'll do well. But, if their starters show up the way they are capable of, and each play 32 minutes, we'll have a tough time winning this one. But, if Morey can hit 8 threes, maybe it won't matter what they do.

            1970-71 Game 6 Results

Conner is 100% and back in the starting lineup, moving Woodworth back to the bench.

Second media timeout is at 11:26 and we've managed to scratch our way back into it a little bit, and trail 16-19. We were down by 10 at one point. Ramage has two fouls and is on the bench currently. Morey leads us with 8 points, and has one three pointer.

We briefly take the lead by one, but after a 4-0 La. Tech run, I call timeout with 5:52 left and we trail 29-32. Bracey and Woodworth each have 4 points off the bench. Morey is at 10. We're shooting the ball at 60%, which I don't anticipate lasting. Both teams are passing the ball really well, with an evenly split 18 assists between the teams. Flores has 3 for us and Newlin 2.

Last media timeout of the half is at 3:07 and we trail 36-38. Morey is at 12, while a lot of other guys are pitching in. Emerick has a couple of three pointers and 6 points total. Ramage is playing with two fouls. Flores and Sanders are on the bench with 2 and 3 fouls respectively.

At half time, we lead by the score of: Appalachian State 43 - Louisiana Tech 42. We've been great from the foul line, 10-11. Bracey and Morey are both 5-5 from the line. Bracey was fouled on a three point shot not too long before half and sunk all three of them. Ramage picked up his 3rd foul right after coming in, so he and Sanders both have 3. We're shooting 55% from the field, hopefully we can maintain something close to that.

15:41 left and we lead 56-49. Ramage picked up his 4th foul in a hurry and will be on the bench for another 8 or so minutes. Emerick has come out hot in the second half with a three and a couple of other baskets, and suddenly he has 13 points.

And just like that it is tied at 61 with 12:23 left, so I call timeout. They are out rebounding us 28-22, but it sure seems like more, they have gotten a put back seemingly every possession the last 4 minutes. Klotz has a double double, 10 and 10, and I bet a lot of those 10 are offensive rebounds.

7:43 left and we trail 70-72. Ledrut, who I didn't realize was a 5 star recruit, is having a career game in his 6th collegiate game, with several big threes and he has 20 points and 6 rebounds.

3:44 left we trail 74-80. Things aren't looking good, as La. Tech is really nailing some threes now, and if they don't, Klotz will clean up the miss and put it back.

We lose, and by a score that doesn't really reflect how competitive we were. Louisiana Tech 86 - Appalachian State 76. We couldn't stop fouling down the stretch, and we end up being outrebounded by 10 and let up 17 offensive rebounds, which did us in. Bad game from Morey, just 2-10 from beyond the arc. Conner had a double double. Ramage ended up fouling out. Bracey was incredibly efficient off the bench, and maybe should have got more playing time.

              1970-71 Game 7 Preview

              December 13th, 1970 at UNC-Wilmington Seahawks (7-1)
              Conference: Colonial Athletic Association
              Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
              1969-70 record: 15-16 (7-9)

UNC Wilmington (UNCW) is a 44 prestige school that has a spurt of success about once a decade that lasts for a year or two, but they've never been able to sustain, nor have they fallen into the doldrums for too long. They made the NCAA tournament two years ago to cap off a 21-13 (10-6) season. They had a down year last year, but looks like they are rebounding nicely this season. They've played a decent schedule, and their only loss was an opening home loss to Norfolk State, which will prove to be a black eye on their schedule all season.

They've been scoring the ball very well and shooting the ball exceptionally well from beyond the arc. 48% as a team so far. On the flip side they holding teams to 26% shooting from beyond the arc. Good for a 21% difference, best in the nation. I expect those to normalize as the season goes on. They are with backup freshman post Simmon. He was playing 25 minutes a game almost in his two game before his injury. He'll be back in 3 weeks.

PG: Fannin, 6'3", Senior: 4 year starter. Pretty underwhelming for a guy who has played 30+minutes a game for nearly 100 games. Excellent free throw shooter who is just average distributing the ball.

SG: Shinn, 6'4", Freshman: Good looking outside shooter who isn't afraid to put it up, and has been shooting incredible percentages so far. 31-55 so far from three on the season.

SF: Freeman, 6'6", Senior: Started last year and averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds. Does an okay job attacking the basket, gets on the glass well for a wing and does okay defensively.

PF: Hill, 6'8", Sophomore: Played 6 minutes a game last year. Talented offensive big man who is a nuisance on the offensive glass. Poor defender.

C: Tomblin, 6'9", Junior: 3 year starter. Averaged 10 and 7 last year. Strong defender, and another problem on the offensive glass. After the La. Tech game, where they killed us with offensive rebounds, I'm a little nervous. Just a strong, all-around big man with no weaknesses except for his bad free throw percentage. Career 52%.

Bench: Clardy is a senior who started last year and averaged 12 points a game. He got pushed aside by Shinn, but he's still a nice guard to bring off the bench. He can score it off the bounce and is a streaky three point shooter. Castanon is their senior point guard, the 6'0" guard loves to drive and he and Clardy provide a pretty solid senior duo off the bench. Kelsey is their 6'8" post reserve, with the injury to their freshman. He's not very good. They have a decent stable of reserve perimeter players, but there is only so many minutes to go around.

Coach: Bernie Mallette, 59 years old. 38/46/100/76, Rec/Sct/Off/Def, 380-96 career record. 4th season at UNC Wilmington.

Really good floor coach, who has stayed in fairly low major basketball for his career and has always been consistently competitive. Was at USC Upstate for 7 years and Bryant for 10 years prior to his current job. Might have one more promotion left in him.

                1970-71 Game 7 Results

13:40 left, we trail 13-20. A very fast paced gamed so far and UNCW is 8-9 from the field and thankfully we're hitting some shots to stay in arm's length. Ramage has 4 early baskets and 8 points.

7:57 media timeout and UNCW is still killing us offensively. We trail 23-32. They have yet to hit a three, though to be fair, there not shooting a ton of them, and they are 75% from the field right now. I think they have missed twice all game. Ramage has two fouls, though he'll have to back in soon.

Newlin hits a three with 3:35 left, to cut their lead to 30-35. Conner rapidly picked up fouls 2 and 3. Ramage is in right now with 2, though I'm going to take him out the next chance I get.

We go ice cold to end the half, which stinks because UNCW only scores 4 points the last 3:35, and we lose ground on them. Half time score: UNC Wilmington 39 - Appalachian State 31. Ramage leads us with 10 points, though he does have the two fouls. Morey is 2-5 and has been limited so far.

Ramage picks up foul number 4 with 12:37 left, and we trail 43-53. True to their stats coming in, they are hitting their threes, 60%, and we are not, 29%.

8:00 left, and Sanders draws a charge. We trail 51-61. Ramage is coming back in with his 4 fouls. The entire starting lineup is in except for Sanders for Conner, hoping for some offense.

Ramage gets a bucket, but fouls out with 7:27 left, he had 14 points and 4 rebounds. We trail 53-64.

We have a few opportunities to get the score down to the 5-6 range, but we miss some shots at the free throw line and UNCW goes on a little mini-run and I call timeout after a steal and dunk by Fannin. With 4:52 left, we trail 59-72.

Morey hits a three at the buzzer to pad his stats a little bit and to make the final score UNC Wilmington 84 - Appalachian State 72. We hit some threes at the end, Emerick especially got hot in the 2nd half. But, our defense was very bad, and Flores threw up an 0 fer performance from the field. He hits a couple of those threes, it's a different ball game. Evenly distributed scoring attack from UNCW, and they look like they will have a good squad this year if everyone stays healthy. Two game losing streak, and we kick of a nice homestand against what should be some easier competition.

                  1970-71 Game 8 Preview

                  December 18th, 1970 vs Centenary Gentlemen (1-5)
                  Conference: Southland
                  Location: Shreveport, Louisiana
                  1969-70 record: 10-22 (6-14)

Centenary is an 11 prestige school. They joined the NCAA in 1923 and were independent until they joined the Southland in 1947-48 after the creation of the Lone Star Conference. They have been a bottom feeder in the Southland pretty well since their induction. The Southland switched out a weak Emporia State (KS) program for SE Oklahoma State last year, Centenary is certainly a candidate to get kicked out this next season. Of course, Appalachian State as a mighty 12 prestige program has no such concerns. No NCAA appearances in their history, their claim to fame is back to back CBI appearances as an independent in 43 and 44, and even reaching the CBI finals in 44, where they lost to Sacred Heart.

At first glance this is the weakest team we've played so far, and they have generated some horrible offensive numbers so far.

PG: Darnell, 5'7", Senior: Played 13 minutes a game last year and averaged 5.5 points. Small guard that can attack the basket and score despite his height. Only attempted one three this year, which he made. Not really much of a passer, just a scoring guard. Bad defender.

SG: Mallard, 6'3", Sophomore: Played 67 minutes all season last year. Decent three point shooter, but is other wise weak. He's a walk-on after all. Morey should have a solid game.

SF: Koerner, 6'2", Freshman: Has some offensive talent, especially getting to the rim. Will become a solid passer eventually. He'll be a good player for his level in a few seasons.

PF: Jones, 6'8", Junior: Played 15 minutes a game last year, averaging 5 points. Solid defender who can score a little, even though he's been bad this season. Poor rebounder.

C: Carson, 6'11", Senior: 4 year starter. Averaged 9 and 8 last year. They actually have a solid center. He's big and rebounds and does a decent job scoring, even if his stats are worse than they should be. Not much on defense, but at least he's productive.

Bench: Piper is a freshman combo guard who will be a very good player offensively, but is Ingram level bad defensively. Lankford is a decent big man at 6'8". Gagnon started last year, and was rightfully passed up by the freshmen. He's been really aggressive shooting the ball this year after averaging 10.5 a game last year, awful defender.

Coach: Lowell Foster, 50 years old. 38/64/33/25, 76-89 career record. 1st season at Centenary.

Good scout not much else. Spent the last 3 seasons at Auburn as an assistant and Minnesota before that. In the 50's, he got a 5 year stint as the head coach at Saint Mary's and his first three seasons were okay, but once his own players took over he went 8-22 (5-11) in 1958-59 and was then booted.

This team really stinks. They can't defend at all, and I expect our guards to have some really nice games. Offensively, there isn't much that scares me. I'd like to divvy out some playing time to some reserves in this one.

Ramage gets hurt with 16:59 left, but luckily it is super minor at 94%. He's still going to come out for now, because we lead 8-2. Morey and Emerick both have early three pointers.

Justin Darnell is tearing us up. With 16:00 left, he has 3 straight baskets and just forced a 5 second closely guarded call. We lead 10-8.

Jumping ahead to the 5:50 mark when I call a timeout to make a few subs, we lead 36-21. Morey leads us with 11 and he's 3-6 from beyond the arc. Sanders has 9 points off the bench in just 4 minutes, but has two fouls as well. Ramage hasn't played yet. I'll plan on playing him at the beginning of the second half.

Centenary goes on a 10-0 run to end the half, I should have called timeout but I kept trying to just get to intermission. Anyways, the score is now Appalachian State 44 - Centenary 35. I brought in Sears for 3 minutes to play center, and it did not go well while he was in. Morey picked up his 2nd foul with about 3 minutes left and didn't play the rest of the half either. Bad coaching on my part. Darnell slowed down after his crazy hot start, and leads Centenary with 11 points. Morey leads us with 14, Flores is at 8.

Morey picks up two more quick fouls with 16:56 left and now has 4, but our lead is 54-40. First time all year he's been in foul trouble, I think. He did manage to hit another three and has 17 points now. Emerick is up to 10.

I hadn't really noticed how many turnovers both teams had, I've got 17 and they've got 15 and Centenary has 9 steals total. After Bracey coughs it up for the 2nd time and gives up an easy layup on the other end, I call time out. With 9:52 left, we lead 70-53. Ingram played for the first time in a while and started off hot, 5 quick points, but has a couple of turnovers and a foul on a three point shot since then.

I bring Morey in and he ends up fouling out with 8:28 left, but we lead 75-55, so I'm not really worried. I certainly wouldn't have brought him in so early in a closer game. Conner has 8 points and 12 boards. Emerick is our second leading scorer with 13.

I call timeout with 5:43 left, and it is getting closer than I'd like. We lead 79-63. Emerick's 13 and Newlin's 9 have made for a pretty good statline for the PG combo.

With 2:27 left, we lead 89-70 and I elect to bring in all reserves, including Ian Clegg, the Australian freshman who hasn't played since the first game of the season. The big story is Conner who had been stuck on 8 points for a while, exploded the last few minutes and now has a stat line of 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Clegg gets a bucket and a couple of rebounds and helps us on our way to a nice win: Appalachian State 91 - Centenary 70. We did a good job offensively, even if we did have 20 turnovers. 13-30 from three and a perfect 10-10 from the line. Conner deservedly gets the player of the game award. Ramage's injury will be healed up by the next game, so he only played 14 minutes out of not wanting him to get hurt in a game that should be a blowout. I didn't manage this one very well, and if I had been a little more analytical, we probably could have won by 30. Centenary is very bad.

They are off to a very nice start for NKU standards at 7-3. They've played well defensively so far and have a couple of solid players that are carrying them.

PG: Yon, 5'11", Senior: 4 year starter and a true point guard. He averaged 11 point, 5 boards and 4 assists last year. He plays really good defense, takes care of the ball and drops of 4-5 assists a game. Offensively his percentages are just okay, but he doesn't take too many shots.

SG: Pickering, 6'0", Senior: Started 8 games and played 19 minutes a game last year. Decent offensive guard who is excellent from the line. Weak defender, his current average of 13.5 is a little high, I think.

SF: Saylor, 6'3", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 11.5 points and 4 rebounds. Has some talent offensively, and came in very developed and is about maxed out. Will be a good 4 year player. '

PF: Smock, 6'8", Senior: Started last year and averaged 12.5 and 8.2. Having a monster year so far with 21.3 points and 12 boards a game.

C: Martin, 7'0", Sophomore: Played 18 minutes a game last year and averaged 4.6 and 5.7. Good rebounder who holds his own defensively and isn't incompetent offensively.

Bench: Geary is a 6'1" freshman guard who is really scoring the ball well off the bench. He primarily gets his points by going to the basket, but he can hit the three, he's 8-19 this season. His guard skills will get better and by the time he's a senior he'll be tough. Crouse is a 6'4" guard that can shoot it a little bit. Sophomore post Fansworth is 6'9", pretty good on the glass, especially the offensive glass, does a solid job defensively. Horrible offensively.

Coach: Brett Garza, 57 years old. 77/37/20/46, 164-221 career record. 13th season at NKU.

Good recruiter who has just kind of tread water for the last decade at Northern Kentucky. He's had a few good teams in there, but mainly they are right around .500 in conference. Though he looks like he's got a decent squad this year.

Like a lot of these teams at this level, they lack depth, but they do have a few stud players. Yon and Smock are a dangerous duo and the freshman Geary can go for 15+ off the bench, so this won't be an easy game at home.

                        1970-71 Game 9 Results

15:59 left and we lead 10-9. Ramage and Smock both have 5 points each to lead their teams. Morey has an early three pointer.

I call a timeout with 7:08 left and we lead 30-28, we lead by as many as 8, but they are currently on a 6-0 run. Ramage has 7 and 3 Bracey has a three pointer off the bench. But, it's Flores who is 4-9 from the field who leads us with 10 points.

Ramage goes one of two at the line and it brings us to 37-39 with 2:35 left. Morey has two fouls, but he hasn't done much this game at all. Smock has 12 and 6 for NKU. Both teams are struggling from three, which ever team gets it going first probably wins.

At half time it is all tied up. Appalachian State 41 - Northern Kentucky 41. Ramage is 6-7 from the line and leads us with 12 points. Morey and Emerick combined for 1-10 from the field and 1-9 from three. Bracey and Newlin did hit some threes off the bench, though. I think I'm going to start doubling Smock inside and see how it goes.

11:42 left and we lead 58-56. Both teams have had some sloppy turnovers in the second half. Ramage is up to 16 and 6. Morey has a couple of three pointers in the second half and has 9 points total. Conner's at 6 points and 9 boards. Emerick is 0-6 from the field.

I call timeout because NKU is on a 9-0 run and we trail 58-65 with 9:41 left.

We respond well though, and when Emerick hits his first shot of the game with a three pointer with 6:17 left, it brings us to 67-69 and NKU calls timeout. Ramage has 19 and 8 and Flores is at 13.

I call timeout with 3:24 left to make a couple of subs and we lead 76-72. Morey hit a big three and has 14 points now. Newlin hit a big one as well and has two of them this game.

Saylor for NKU hits a three with 14 seconds left that cuts our lead to 4, 84-80. Newlin gets fouled on the next possession, hits one of two to make it a 5 point game and NKU misses a desperation three on the other end and we win the game by the final score of Appalachian State 85 - Northern Kentucky 80. A really good win given the opponent and that we were on the verge of losing it midway through the second half. Ramage with a nice double double 21 and 11. Morey and Flores combined for 29 points on the wing. Newlin's 10 points off the bench were huge especially with the poor game from Emerick.

They have some pretty horrid team percentages. Teams are shooting 51% on them right now and 40% from three. And at a quick glance their team talent level is awful. They are without junior guard Gee, who is probably their best all around offensive player, so it is a big loss.

PG: Inman, 6'2", Senior: Played 20 minutes a game last year. Decent offensive player averaging 13 a game right now. More of a combo than a point.

SG: Herrick, 6'4", Freshman: Sharp shooting freshman that can't guard a lick.

SF: Gonzalez, 6'7", Senior: 3 year starter, averaged 11. 6 and 5.5 last year. Scores inside and is a problem on the offensive glass. Probably better suited as a 4 than a 3 given his lack of perimeter defensive skills.

PF: Tharp, 6'8", Sophomore: Started 9 games last year and played 20 minutes a game averaging 6 and 4. Decent offensive talent and an okay rebounder.

C: Dinger, 6'11", Senior: Started last year and averaged 5 and 6. Good defender not much else.

Bench: Baker is a 6'8" freshman post with some real offensive talent, scoring 6 points in 12 minutes a game. Graybill can shoot it a little. Phillips has some talent at guard, but he's kind of an odd player. Not much of a bench.

Coach: Tyrone Braley, 49 years old. 7/71/20/82. 11-31 career record. 2nd season at Idaho State.

Pretty good coach, at least defensively. If he can manage to get some talent to Pocatello, he could be alright.

These guys stink and I'm thinking we can blow them out.

12:41 left, we lead 18-11. Conner of all people leads us with 8 points. Morey has a couple of three pointers as well.

Newlin goes down with an injury and he won't return, that's with 10:05 and we now trail 19-22. We've gone cold and Idaho State's big men are peppering us with three pointers. Without Newlin, Ingram becomes the backup point guard.

5:58 left and we lead 30-28. Morey is up to 11. Ramage is just 1-5 from the field for 2 points, and he should have having a lot of success against these guys.

At half time, thanks to a few more Morey three pointers, we lead by the score of Appalachian State 42 - Idaho State 37. They are scoring on us more than I anticipated. Morey leads us with 17 points and Conner has 12 and 6. Ramage picked up his second foul right before half time, but he's the only one even approaching foul trouble.

12:35 left, we lead 59-55. Idaho State has just hit back to back three pointers, right when we were on the verge of breaking away. So, I call timeout. Conner is up to 16 and 8, while Morey has 22 on 6-8 shooting from three. Ramage has gotten going a little bit in the second half and is at 10 and 9, but on just 4-12 shooting.

Ramage picks up foul number 4 with 8:20 left, and we lead 68-63. He's on the bench with foul trouble and Morey is getting a quick breather, so hopefully we can survive another minute or two with Sanders being my main offensive focal point.

3:37 left, we lead 80-74. Morey is up to 29 points and Conner has 21 and 8. Ramage has sloppily wound up with 12 points, 12 boards and 4 assists. Gonzalez has been killing for me the Bengals, he has 20 points and 6 boards.

Ramage fouls out with 1:52 left, we lead 82-76.

They mess around and foul us some towards the end and we do a pretty good job at the line and end up walking away with a win that's closer than I anticipated. Appalachian State 87 - Idaho State 79. Morey ends up with 32 points on 10-13 shooting and 7-9 from three. He's now 54-102 from three this season. Conner with a monster game as well. Newlin's injury is a broken cheekbone and he's out for 3 and half weeks. The freshman has been pretty decent lately, and definitely don't want him missing time. Ingram will see most of his minutes as the backup point guard with maybe Bracey seeing a few as well.

                              Conference: Southern
                              Location: Spartanburg, South Carolina
                              1969-70 record: 15-16 (10-6)

Wofford is a 35 prestige school who missed the postseason for the first time since 1964-65. They are currently in the golden age of Wofford basketball, so they need to ride this wave as long as they can.

We still have 3 non-conference games dotted throughout the schedule, but we're getting started with 4 conference games before our next non-con contest.

They've done a good job turning teams over this year, but have been lit up from three which I like.

PG: Patterson, 6'1", Junior: Started last year and averaged 11 points a game. Pretty solid offensive guard for this level, is better when he's taking the ball to the basket. Nearly 2 steals a game.

SG: Morelock, 6'0", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 18.4 points a game last year. Excellent offensive player who can shoot the heck out of the ball even if he's off a little bit from last year's 45% from three. Has some real point guard skills too, horrific defender though. He'd be at North Carolina or something if he could defend.

SF: Stacey, 6'5", Senior: Played 18 minutes and scored 7 points a game last year. Good offensive player, especially getting to the basket. He's been solid from three, 13-25. Rebounds some and doesn't defend.

PF: Gwinn, 6'8", Junior: Played 19 minutes a game last year, 5 and 4. Scores a little bit, rebounds okay. Okay defensively.

C: Jensen, 6'9", Freshman: Talented offensive big man who will be a real problem on the offensive glass for the next few years. Another no defense player for the Terriers.

Bench: They have a two year starter, David Lederman (really) on the bench. He's 6'5" averaged 9 points a game the last two years and defends better than anyone in their starting lineup, and is just okay defensively. Dang is a freshman shooter who should be able to play some point guard eventually. Claus is another shooter off the bench. Irwin and Simone are their post reserves and they are very similar, some offensive skill, below average on the glass and horrible defensively.

Coach: Napoleon Corcoran, 53 years old. 60/47/56/17, 87-52 career record. 5th season at Wofford.

He'll need to ride this Morelock train for as long as he can. Morelock and Jensen in a couple of years should be a pretty nice duo.

This has the capabilities of becoming a shoot out. I think I'll be able to score on them, but I also know they have the guard play to make my defense look bad too. Last game of the month and first conference game of the season, always nice to start off 1-0 with a home conference win.

It's the Ramage show early on as he has all 10 of our points, but we trail 10-12 with 15:34 left. To add to it, Morey has two quick fouls and will be on the bench for a while.

I call a timeout with 6:15 left and we trail 25-33. We're getting beat on the glass and even though we're outshooting them by nearly 10%. Ramage has 14 and 6, but nobody else has done much. Morey played a few minutes, didn't foul, but didn't score either. He's back on the bench. The scary part is Morelock hasn't even scored yet for the Terriers. Conner has two fouls as well.

Bracey gets a steal and a dunk and he now has 6 points and 4 boards and we have their lead down to 33-34 with 3:18 left and Wofford calls time. Ingram has 5 points off the bench.

Bracey completes an old-fashioned three point play right before the buzzer and it ties the game up: Appalachian State 44 - Wofford 44. It gives Bracey 9 points at halftime and he did a fine job replacing Morey. Ramage leads us with 14 and 8, he has two fouls. In fact, everyone in our front line who has played has 2 fouls except for Sanders who has 3.

I call timeout with 13:23 left after a Wofford steal and layup makes it 51-55. Morey finally connected on a three, his first points of the game. Between he and Morelock who were averaging nearly 45 points a game, it was their first basket.

Lederman hits a couple of threes in a row and then Ingram gets called for a charge with 10:26 left and suddenly we're down 60-65. Morey is back in the game after a rest when he picked up his 3rd foul. Emerick has 8 points and 5 assists.

Conner completes a 3 point play with 7:47 left, and it ties the game up at 70. It's Conner's first basket of the game after such a dominating game last time out. Morelock finally hit a three for the Terriers, while Morey is back in and has hit a shot and is up to 7 points.

Morey picks up foul number 4 with 6:02 left and we trail 70-74. Morey will stay in for now. Conner also picked up his 4th and is also staying in the game. Ramage has 17 and 12.

We go on an 8-2 run that is capped by a Morey three pointer that gives us the lead 78-76 with 4:04 left and Wofford calls timeout.

Conner fouls out with 3:47 left and it's all tied at 80. I'll try to alternate Sanders and Woodworth the best I can offense and defense. Though Sanders has four fouls as well.

Morey fouls out with 1:56, but he gives a parting gift with one last three pointer. Bracey will come in. We lead 85-81.

Bracey gets a steal and is fouled immediately, he hits them both and Wofford calls timeout again. 1:35 left, we lead 88-81.

We looked like we were on the verge of securing the win, when we foul Patterson on a three and he hits them all, then Moreock hits a three the next possession after Emerick is just one of two from the line. Emerick hits one of two again, but Flores grabs the offensive board and is fouled and knocks them both down and that will about do it.

Ingram hits one more three for good measure and ends up with 14 points, a career high and we end up with the win by the score of Appalachian State 97 - Wofford 92. It was indeed a shootout, and we get lucky Morelock was off and only had 6 points. Ramage goes for 19 and 15 and has a great game. Ingram was great shooting the ball and Bracey had 13 and 8 off the bench. Really, just a lot of good lines in a box score when the team scored 97 points. Nice win, and good start to conference play.
