    1969-1970 Game 4 Results

Geared up trying to get my coaching career started with a perfect month and what would have to be one of the few 4-0 starts in Appalachian State history, heck 3-0 starts are probably pretty rare.

Ramage picks up 2 fouls in the first 30 seconds of the game and will sit a while, and by the time the first media timeout at 13:41, we trail 8-10. Nason has half of our points.

9:29 left and we lead 16-14. Nason has 10 points and a couple of three pointers. Thomas Sears has gotten his first minutes of the season at the center position.

With 3:46 left in the 1st half, it's tied at 21. Bartell picked up his 2nd foul and hopefully we can sit him the rest of the half. Nason is up to 12 points, and is carrying us currently.

At half, we're just barely ahead by the score: Appalachian State 35 - NJIT 34. Nason now has 17 points and 3 from long range. Besides that 6 other Mountaineers have scored, but we'll need someone else to get 10 or so in this second half if we want to hold on. Brown has 8 and Rodriguez 9 for NJIT.

After a sloppy start, probably because I forgot to put the starting lineup back in, where we get down by 5 very quickly, before we go on a nice run to be leading 49-46 with 15:27 left. It's been all Nason, he's up to 25 points and has two more from beyond the arc this half.

Bartell picks up his 4th with 10:28 left and it's all tied at 54 and that means Florio is going to have to try to play point guard for the next 4 or 5 minutes. McLoughlin has 13 boards, but also is 1-5 from the field and has 3 turnovers. This will be a tough one to pull out given our personnel issues right now. In fact, our 10 turnovers to their 2, is the only reason we don't lead by 10 points. Our percentages are much better.

With 7:15 left, we lead 61-58. Nason is getting a breather as is McLoughlin who heard my criticism of him and now has 11 points to go with his 15 boards.

But, NJIT goes on a 9-0 run with a timeout in between, to take the lead 69-65, and I left Bartell on the bench too long, as we got into some turnover problems for a few minutes.

Florio hits a 3 with 2:18 left to cut their lead to 68-69 and NJIT calls timeout. Florio is up to 11 points.

Bartell hits a basket to get us back to a 1 point defect and then turns around and gets a steal with 44 seconds left, dishes it off to Nason who dunks it and gets fouled, but misses the free throw afterwards and when the dust settles with 36 seconds left, we lead 72-71. Nason has 27 points to go with 6 boards.

But, it's all for naught because Shiflett gets fouled and makes the basket at the buzzer, and tragically misses the free throw, that had Nason made his would have allowed us to have a chance in OT. But, we don't and we take our first loss of the season in a heartbreaker by the score of NJIT 73 - Appalachian State 72. Some roster mismanagement during NJIT's nice stretch midway in the 2nd half really killed me. Nason had a career game, but missed a huge free throw at the end.

      November 1969 Update

Finish 3-1, with some very tight games. The injuries to two starters, Serrano and Bass could have been disastrous and to come out of the first month 3-1 is really pretty extraordinary if you ask me. I imagine will have offensive troubles until Serrano comes back, but a guy like Nason has really stepped up, and our posts are doing a good enough job on the glass to keep us competitive.

      November Recruiting Update

I expected to get a commitment this month, but I didn't get the guy I thought. I think I'll fill two more spots next month and am now seeing if there are any foreign big men to take a spot as a freshman post for next year, but if not I'll carry it into the transfer period.

As for the guy that signed, he's a monster:

      Travis Conner

He's a behemoth at 7'4" and he's an absolute force on the glass. He's a JUCO, and will probably step right into the center spot next year and hopefully average 10 boards a game. Defensively and offensively, he's average and that's putting it nicely. But, his job will be to snare rebounds and get us back on offense. Very pleased we signed him.

        1969-1970 Game 5 Preview

December 4th, 1969 vs High Point Panthers (0-5)
        Conference: Big South
        Location: High Point, North Carolina
        1968-69 record: 14-16 (10-8)

High Point is a 16 prestige team, and in North Carolina as well, which makes them a perfect non-con opponent. High Point had a really nice stretch from the mid-30's to mid 40's, making a postseason tournament almost every year, and getting past the 1st round of the NCAA tournament twice in that stretch too. Their best season being a 28-7 (13-5) performance in 1941-42. They haven't made the tournament since 1946.

High Point is off to an awful start, 0-5, and they haven't really been competitive thus far in any of their games. The smallest margin between them and their opponent is 11, and the next closest is in the high teens. They've let up an absurd amount of points so far.

PG: Bennett, 6'3", Junior: Played 8 minutes a game last year. Averaging 7 points so far this year on bad percentages, he's more of a 2 than a 1. He's a decent defender.

SG: Roeder, 6'1", Freshman: Sharpshooter that probably isn't ready to start in collegiate basketball yet, but will develop in a few years. Struggling so far in his college career, 3-12 from beyond the arc.

SF: Francis, 6'2", Senior: Started 2 games last year and averaged 18 minutes a game, scoring 7.6 points. Has the ability to get to the basket, and has enough of an outside shot to keep teams honest, definitely their best perimeter offensive player.

PF: Smith, 6'10", Sophomore: Started 7 games last year and averaged 3.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in 16.6 minutes. The Aussie is an excellent rebounder that doesn't do much else, though he will put up a three or two a game.

C: Kuhlmann, 7'0", Senior: Started last year and averaged 10 and 6. Off to an excellent start this season, averaging 17 a game. Probably playing over his head, but he'll need to have a big game if they are going to beat us.

Bench: Gannon is a 6'2" guard that does a good job defensively, but struggles with other aspects of the game. Hahn is a 6'8" German wing with some offensive ability and an utter lack of defensive talent. Garcia is a 6'2" freshman point guard who got one start earlier this year, he's got a nice three point shot, and will develop into a decent point guard for the Big South down the line. Blanco and Calvert are their two post reserves, both are small, and neither is that good.

Coach: Thomas Harris, 40 years old. 45-80 career record. 5th season at High Point. Pretty decent floor coach, but he really struggles recruiting, and it shows with his lack of talent.

You never know, but I sure think we should be able to handle them, especially at home. Not that I'm watching RPI or anything with this squad since we have zero chance at an at-large bid, but a loss to these guys would be about as bad of a loss as we could get all year.

          1969-1970 Game 5 Results

First media time out is at 14:03, and we trail 8-11. High Point is 5-6 from the field and we're just 2-7, but we've gotten to the line to keep the margin respectable. Ramage leads us with 5 early points. Florio has 2 early fouls.

I call timeout with 7:24 left, because our offense is playing pitifully. We trail 16-21, we are shooting 31% from the field and already have 7 turnovers and have yet to hit a three. Nason is 0-5 just by himself. Both teams are racking up the fouls with 15 fouls being almost evenly split between the two teams. McLoughlin has two fouls as well.

Back to back threes by Bartell causes High Point to call timeout with 4:46 left and we lead 24-23. Bartell now has 10 points.

They hit a shot at the buzzer, but it only cuts into our lead and the score at half is Appalachian State 38 - High Point 35. Kuhlmann has 12 for the Panthers, but only 2 after we started doubling him. They've hit a few threes down the stretch as well to stay in it. Bartell and Nason both have 12 points, while Woodworth who played a lot of minutes with foul trouble to McLoughlin, has 5 and 5. High Point shot 56% in the 1st half, I'll keep with the 1-3-1 zone for a little longer and if it keeps struggling I'll give man defense a try.

Neither defense is working and their post players are killing me. Kuhlmann already has 5 points this half and Ian Smith, their PF, has hit a couple of threes in the second half and it has put us at a 44-46 disadvantage with 15:53 left.

11:56 left and we trail 55-60, High Point is destroying us offensively and are now at 61% from the field and 58% from three and it seems like they haven't missed a 3 in a while. Bartell is up to 20 and Nason 17, and HPU's Kuhlmann is at 19. Have switched back and forth from man to zone and have noticed little difference. Florio has 4 fouls now.

7:54 left and the score is 59-62, HPU has finally cooled off, but we haven't been able to take advantage. Bartell has 20 points now on 6-11 from the field and perfect in 6 attempts from the line.

They immediately go on a 6-0 run and I have to call timeout with 6:13 left and we're down 59-68. We're on the verge of a terrible loss.

Bartell hits a three with 4:42 left to cut the lead to 66-70 and HPU calls timeout. Bartell and Kuhlmann both have 23 points for their respective teams.

Nason manages to hit one of two free throws and it cuts their lead to 69-72 with 2:43 left. Both teams have been trying to let the other win the game down the stretch, but nobody is taking advantage.

Ramage gets a put back for his 8th rebound and 12th and 13th point, and then HPU gets called for a shot clock violation with 1:09 left, and we have the ball and trail 71-72.

Nason misses a shot and I decide to foul when I see Calvert, a little used reserve post and horrible free throw shooter gets the rebound. HPU is in the 1-1. Calvert is just 3-6 in his entire career at the line.

He misses and Mcloughlin grabs the board and we have another chance to take the lead with 43 seconds left. But, McLoughlin chucks it out of bounds immediately and now we have to foul again. They are now in the double bonus and Hahn sinks both of them to give them a 71-74 lead with 36 seconds left.

Nason gets a quick bucket inside to make it 73-74 with 29 seconds left and we're back to fouling.

They hit both, with 20 seconds left I decide not to force a three, which was dumb, and Ramage settles for a jumper from the free throw line, he sinks it, but it doesn't matter because we needed 3 points and we lose.

Final score: High Point 76 - Appalachian State 75. Very frustrating game and loss to a bad team. They gave us every opportunity to come back and win that game and we just couldn't capitalize.

            1969-1970 Game 6 Preview

December 8th, 1969 vs West Virginia Mountaineers (2-5)
            Conference: Big East
            Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
            1968-69 record: 16-15 (10-8)

West Virginia is a 70 prestige school which is as low as I let power conference teams get to prevent them from falling too far into oblivion. But WVU has given it their best shot, missing the postseason for going on 12 straight seasons. For most of the history of the NCAA they've been very strong, particularly from 1900-1940. They are one of just 6 teams to win 4 NCAA championships, and they won their last one way back in 1934 and won 3 in the first 20 seasons of NCAA play.

They are 2-5 to start the season, but have played a pretty tough schedule.

They've really struggled defensively to start the season, but I doubt we have the firepower to make them pay. At first glance they've easily got the most talent of any team we've played thus far this season.

PG: Connor, 6'1", Senior: 4 year starter and former top 40 recruit. Started just 15 games due to injury last year but averaged 17 points and 5 assists. He's a true point guard with some real offensive talent. He's a solid defender who will cause problems with steals. A very good player.

SG: Pepper, 6'2", Senior: Played 10 minutes a game last year and averaged 4 points a game. Finally starting in his last year. Can score it and does a solid job defensively.

SF: Robinson, 6'5", Senior: 4 year starter that averaged 16 points, 7 boards and 3 assists last year. The Canadian import is an excellent offensive wing that really gets on the glass, his defense is middling, but with as productive as he's been so far, who cares. He's 17-29 from beyond the arc this year and averaging 21 a game.

PF: Dudley, 7'0", Junior: Started last year and averaged 8 and 7. Really good rebounder and scores well inside but really struggles to defend.

C: Dear, 6'10", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 6 and 6 last season. Strong defensive big man who does a decent job on the glass. His offensive game is slowly rounding into shape and he's no slouch there.

Bench: Hackworth and Valentin are a pair of sophomore posts who have a little bit of talent. After that, they have 5 freshman, all at least top 200 and many higher than that, that share playing time on the perimeter. Right now freshman point guard Dudley Davis is getting the most minutes of the newcomers. The 5'10" guard really defends and has a very nice outside shot. All of their freshman will eventually be good players and assuming none of them transfer should be a very nice nucleus for WVU in 2 or 3 years.

Coach: William Lally, 54 years old. 253-262 career record. 5th season at West Virginia.

In way over his head for this job, he has bad ratings for an assistant coach let alone a power 5 one. He spent time at Eastern New Mexico and New Mexico State and had some decent success there before somehow grabbing the WVU job. With the freshman class he's assembled, he might stick around for a while yet.

We are really overmatched in this game, the first of the season it has been that obvious. So, it'll take some hot shooting by us and an off night by them to have a real chance.

              1969-1970 Game 6 Results

We're going to slow the pace down and try to drag this game along. The first media timeout is at 15:41 and it finds the game all tied up at 10. Nason has 6 early points and Bartell has our only three of the game.

Bartell picks up fouls no. 2 and 3 in back to back plays and now he's on the bench for the rest of the 11:13 in the 1st half, and we're down 17-19. Both teams are having success offensively, WVU is spreading it around, but Nason has 12 of our 17 points and is keeping us afloat.

With 8:23 left, we've yet to score another point and Flores just got hurt, but luckily he can stay in the game if needed. We trail 17-24.
Walk-on freshman Levi Gattis will get his first playing time.

The last media timeout of the 1st half has us trailing 36-45 with 3:05 left. Nason has 15 points, while WVU has a couple of guys killing us, Pepper and Connor. Pepper has 13 points and Connor 5 assists.

At half the score is West Virginia 54 - Appalachian State 42. We are having a very hard time stopping them and our 53% from the field is going to be hard for us to replicate. Pepper has 19 and Connor has 13 points and 7 assists to pace the Mountaineers at half. Nason leads us with 16.

Bartell picks up his 4th foul with 16:59 left and we haven't scored and WVU has, and we trail 42-63. We are up to 12 turnovers.

Fast forward to 7:10 left and we trail 54-77. Pepper has 28 points for WVU and Connor has a double double with 17 points and 10 assists. Bartell has played the last few minutes with 4 fouls, but hasn't done much and has just 5 points for the game. Nason leads us with 18.

The backups and walk-ons play the last 4 minutes against their great class of freshman and it helps push the final score to West Virginia 87 - Appalachian State 62. We end up with 20 turnovers (6 alone coming from the freshman Bracey in just 22 minutes and with Pepper for WVU going for 28 points, that alone was probably enough to beat us. We just don't have the talent to compete with these sorts of teams at the moment, unfortunately we have to play one more Big East team next, in Providence.

              The box score:

                December 11th, 1969 at Providence Friars (4-3)
                Conference: Big East
                Location: Providence, Rhode Island
1968-1969 record: 22-12 (11-7), lost in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament as a #7 seed.

Providence is an 84 prestige team that has been a pretty consistent participant in the NCAA tournament since 1947. From 1900-1939 they had just two NCAA appearances, since they've had 17. They made the Final Four in 1962-63 to cap off an excellent 33-6 (16-2) campaign.

They've played a tough schedule so far and despite being just 4-3 don't have any losses that look like they'll be bad ones.

PG: Willis, 6'2", Junior: Started last year and averaged 14, 4 and 3. Very disruptive guard who causes turnovers. His point guard skills are slowly developing an his current assist average of 4 is probably about where he's going top out at. Scores the ball as well.

SG: Hine, 6'1", Junior: Started 13 games last year and averaged 9.8 points in 22 minutes. Combo guard who is pretty similar to Willis except he's not a good defender.

SF: Burg, 6'4", Senior: Started last year and averaged 17 points and 5 boards. Averaged 21 a game in an injury shortened sophomore 20 game season. Very effective scorer who loves to shoot the three. Gets on the glass, and does a decent job defensively and like Willis will get into some steals.

PF: Gillard, 6'7", Senior: Has started 69 of 106 career games including all of them last season when he averaged 14 and 7. Undersized, but is a very productive big man and does a good job defensively.

C: Shows, 6'7", Sophomore: Played 8 minutes a game last year and averaged 1.5 and 1.3 a game. Another undersized big man. He's a strong defender who helps out a little in other facets of the game, but he's not suited to be a Big East center.

Bench: Leonard is a 6'2" guard that shoots the lights out. Cole is a talented offensive point guard who doesn't get much playing time. Webster is 6'11" and a strong rebounder, but a useless defender and a walk-on, which exemplifies the complete lack of post depth the Friars have. If we're going to win, it'll be exploiting this somehow.

Coach: Terry Dart, 57 years old. 461-279 career record. 16th season at Providence.

A good recruiter and strong coach who is been at Providence for nearly two decades. He's made 9 NCAA tournaments at Providence including a Final Four. Before Providence he spent 3 years at Monmouth and before that 4 years at Loyola Maryland. To break the top 50 in wins in this universe you have to eclipse 590, so he's going to need another 7 or 8 years coaching.

They've got some very talented guards, and their starting posts are alright, but their complete lack of post depth is going to kill them this year, and if we're going to have a chance, we need to exploit that, so we'll try pushing the ball inside more.

Flores is still a bit banged up after last game and is at 89%, he'll play some, but I might rely more on Bracey this game.

Not the best start. With 15:42 left, we trail 11-5. McLoughlin just called for a technical foul for arguing a foul call, and now has 2 and will sit. Willis, their talented point guard, was injured and it doesn't look like he'll return.

With 10:17 left, we've cut their lead to 18-22. Bartell has 8 points, but the major problem we have is the same one that I was hoping to cause for them. McLoughin has 3 fouls and Ramage 2. So, it'll be a lot of Woodworth, Sanders and Sears in the the last 10 minutes of the 1st half.

The last media time out of the 1st half is at 2:08, and things have not gone well. We trail 32-46. We have 17 team fouls and they have 13. Too many free throws. Too many fouls. Bartell leads us with 15 and thankfully only has 1 foul so far.

At half the score is Providence 54 - Appalachian State 33. I don't know how many free throws 18 team fouls gets you, but Providence is shooting 88% from the line. My starting lineup has 2 fouls a piece except for McLoughlin who has 3. Sears, Flores and Sanders have 2, 2, and 3 fouls respectively on the bench as well. Oddly, nobody has just one foul on my team. Bartell has 15 points but on 5-14 shooting.

Ramage gets called for his 4th foul then a technical for arguing and is done and that's at 11:21, and we trail 43-71. Bartell has gone nuts shooting the ball and is 8-23 from the field currently.

6:53 left and we trail 51-75. Hine has 22 for the Friars, and Leonard has 9 points, 7 boards and 3 assists off the bench.

Against my better judgement I left my starters in, except for the ones that fouled out to see how many shots Bartell would take, and he answered my question by shooting 30 shots and making 11 of them on his way to 32 points. The final score ends up being Providence 93 - Appalachian State 71. They go 29-37 from the free throw line, and we really didn't cause them any problems at all.

December 16th, 1968 vs Kentucky State Thorobreds (2-9)
                    Conference: None

                    1968-69 record: 3-26

Kentucky State is a 7 prestige team that entered the NCAA in 1911 and has yet to find its way into a conference, though they probably should have way back in 1920, coming off two straight postseason appearances. They are at an all time low prestige wise, right now and it doesn't look like it'll get much better any time soon.

They currently have two starters out due to injury, Bunnell their 4 year point guard and Prater who was Bunnell's replacement. Both will be back in a couple of weeks.

PG: McNeal, 6'4", Senior: 4 year starter who averaged 15.5 a game last year. Big guard who is definitely a shooting guard and not a point guard. But, he takes care of the ball well enough to be passable there. Scores the ball, shoots, defends a little, easily their best player.

SG: Buckles, 6'1", Senior: Played 11 minutes a game last year and averaged 6 points. Struggling this year, and not a good outside shooter, though he can get going at the basket and from midrange. Poor defender.

SF: Flores, 6'3", Freshman: Starting due to the two injuries to perimeter players. He does have a bit of offensive talent, but he's very raw. Will be solid in a few years.

PF: Feaster, 6'9", Sophomore: Played 16 minutes a game last year and averaged 4 and 4. Skilled big man that can pass it, score a little and does a good job on the glass. Poor defender.

C: Wilkinson, 6'10", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 6 and 6. Another decent, young big man. Scores a little and can shoot the ball. Okay defensively. He and Feaster should be a decent post duo in two years.

Bench: Carpenter is a 6'1" senior who is finally getting into the rotation. He's an okay shooter, but that's about it. Davis is another decently talented sophomore big man who is pretty competent across the board. Myers is a three point shooting wing they bring off the bench for about 5 minutes a half.

Coach: Richard Finch, 31-96 career record. 5th season at Kentucky State.

He's a horrible coach, worse than any of my assistants on every level. Shouldn't be a head coach but is, probably won't last too much longer.

Especially with their injuries, this is a game we have to win. They are very weak outside of McNeal and Buckles. Flores is back to 100% and Dave Bass is available to play at 90% as well. He'll come off the bench for a little bit. I've gotten so use to not having him and Serrano, I'll have to rework my rotations.

McLoughlin gets called for a technical foul the second game in a row and he's on the bench with two fouls with 15:51 left, but the good thing is that we lead 10-5. Bartell has 6 quick points and Bass will come in to replace McLoughlin.

11:25 left and we lead 21-7, the offense is really playing well and we've yet to have a turnover. Bartell just picked up his 2nd though and we have Florio playing point guard, so that probably won't last too much longer. Bartell and Ramage both have 6 points a piece to lead us.

8:52 left and our lead is now 30-7, we're shooting 63% from the field to their 14%. Bass has 7 points and 3 boards in his first game back, while Florio has 5 points and an assist and is doing okay at point.

Speaking of, Florio goes down with an injury with 6:42 left and won't return. We lead 35-9. Bartell will have to play with 2 fouls.

At half we lead by the score: Appalachian State 42 - Kentucky State 18. Easily the most dominating stretch of basketball we've played so far this year. Scoring is pretty well balanced, with Bartell's 10 the only total in double figures. With Florio out, Flores will start the second half.

11:09 left, the second media time out of the second half and we lead 58-23. Kentucky State is truly horrible. McNeal has 14 of their 23 points. Bartell is up to 16 and Nason has 11 points and 6 boards.

The under 8 media timeout doesn't hit until 4:46 and we lead 79-24 and KYST is on the verge of shooting under 20% for the game. Bass has been awesome in the 2nd half and has 14 points and 6 boards in his first game back. Ramage is at 11 and 5, and Nason is up to 16 points and 7 rebounds.

The backups and walkons do a solid job and freshman walk on Gattis scores 7 points in just 3 minutes. The final score is a preposterous Appalachian State 87 - Kentucky State 28. I've played a LOT of this game and I don't think I've ever seen an offensive output as pitiful as Kentucky State's. 10-56 from the field and 0-15 from beyond the arc. Besides McNeal, their team made just 3 shots form the field. Unfortunately, the win comes with a loss, with senior guard Reid Florio tearing his ACL and is now done for the year. His senior season and collegiate career comes to an end. He played in 8 games, 7 starts and finishes with averages 5.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

                      The box score:

VCU is a 52 prestige school that has had a few bad seasons in a row, but prior to that had a solid 15 year run as a s pretty solid basketball school for the CAA. They have 17 tournament appearances and the odd ball championship run of 1904-05 to cap a 35-4 (14-2) season. Two years later they made the Final Four.

The Rams are 4-5, their only bad loss is against a bad Marshall team in a preseason tournament. They haven't really been blown out by anybody yet.

PG: Snyder, 5'11", Senior: Started last year and averaged 18 points and 4 assists a game. A really sharpshooting guard that fills the boxscore and will play a ton of minutes. Poor defender.

SG: Faber, 6'3", Freshman: A really good looking two guard, and a top 125 recruit. He scores the ball really well, especially from distance and is already a decent defender as a freshman. Going to be an excellent player for the CAA.

SF: Snyder, 6'4", Junior: Walk on that played 17 minutes a game last year and averaged 8 points. Shooting the ball poorly so far, but is rebounding over his head. If he gets hot, he has the ratings to get you.

PF: Webber, 6'8", Senior: Started last year and averaged 10 and 5. At 13 and 6 this year and has the ratings to cause some major problems inside. The Aussie is pretty average elsewhere.

C: Vidrine, 6'10", Senior: 3 year starter, averaged 6.5 and 7.4 last season. Strong rebounder who has come into his own a bit offensively as a senior.

Bench: Swann is a 6 foot sophomore who plays backup point guard and does a decent job. Shoots the ball well. Wilson is a decent reserve post, but poor defender. Marshall is an undersized big man that causes problems on the offensive glass. Their starters play a lot of minutes and it would be nice to get into their weak bench a little bit.

Coach: Noah Jones, 42 years old. 84-86 career record. 6th season at VCU.

Another weak coach. He was promoted from assistant to head coach and probably didn't deserve it. He needs a decent season this year or he's toast.

Bass is back to 100% and Serrano is available and is going to come off the bench. The question is what to do with Bass, do I stick him in the lineup or keep bringing him off the bench. I think he'll stay as a reserve and be able to fill in at the 4 and the 3. But, he's such a bad three point shooter, I don't want to play him at the 3 much, I'm afraid he'll take too many shots. If we can get them into foul trouble, we have a strong chance, their bench is worse than ours.

Quick update on the Southern Conference standings. Valdosta State just lost, so I doubt they will be in next week's top 25. Good start for the Blazers though.

                          1969-1970 Game 9 Results

A horrendous start to the game, we trail 1-11 before I call a timeout with 17:00 left. Flores, who is getting his first collegiate start, has 100% of our scoring.

With 10:42 left, we trail 8-20. Bartell has 7 points, and every single one of our baskets. We are 3-15 from the field currently. Serrano has been in the last 3 minutes but hasn't done anything yet, I will keep poking him.

We are playing as bad as that horrid Kentucky State team we played last game. With 3:43 left we trail 12-36. We just are not hitting shots, 17% from the field.

We finally show a little life offensively and at half time the score VCU 43 - Appalachian State 24. Bartell got going and has 12 points and Serrano scored his first 4 points since the first game of the season. VCU is at 55% from the field and are out rebounding us 27-10. Nason is 0-8 from the field.

After a horrible 0-10 start, Nason finally gets going and scores 5 quick points and a Bartell steal and layup with 14:29 left forces VCU to call timeout and we trail 39-52. VCU plays their starters until they are dog tired and just very rarely bring anyone in, and we need to take advantage of them when they've got a very tired squad out there.

We extend the run to 11-0 and VCU calls another time out with 11:39 left and we trail 46-52. Bartell has 17 now, and Nason has 9 points to go with 9 boards. VCU hasn't scored in 4 minutes.

We get it as close as 3, but by the time there is 5:58 left, we trail 57-68 We've gone cold as Faber rapidly racks up some points to go from like 3 to 13 in just a matter of minutes for VCU.

They keep us at arm's length the rest of the way and when the final buzzer sounds the scoreboard reads VCU 85 - Appalachian State 71. We pretty much stayed with them the whole way, if you don't count the horrible first 5 minutes. They torched us on the glass. Webber had 16 boards, and we had just 6 offensive boards the whole game. Nason had a great 2nd half and Bartell played well. Serrano just needs a few more days and he'll be back to 100% and back in the starting lineup.

Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU) is a 39 prestige team that at one point topped out at 60 after their 2nd Sweet Sixteen season in 4 years in 1947. They haven't come anywhere close to that in success since, their best performance being a 4th place finish in the NIT 3 years ago. They have 7 NCAA appearances, the aforementioned two sweet sixteen appearances and a CBI championship in 1928.

They've played a lot of games away from home and have toured a ton of Florida college towns and picked up a few wins at some of them, including coming off of a road win against Miami (FL), who is probably the worst program in any power conference. They have played some solid defense so far, but have thrown up some stinkers offensively. They are currently injury free.

PG: Boyd, 6'2", Junior: Started last year and averaged 10 points a game. Kind of a poor man's version of our Serrano, aggressive and takes enough shots that he can bite you every once in a while.

SG: Roybal, 6'2", Senior: Played 8 minutes a game last year, is having a fantastic senior season, with 17 points a game and some nice percentages. He's probably a bit over his head offensively right now, but he is terrible defensively.

SF: Waldon, 6'0", Junior: Plays some point guard as well. Solid guard with a very nice three point shot, and rebounds well for his size and ratings. Solid defender.

PF: Jones, 6'8", Junior: Started last year and averaged 7 and 7. Really good defensive big who blocks a shot or two a game. Not much offensively.

C: Shoemaker, 6'11", Senior: Played 16 minutes a game last year and averaged 4 and 4.5. At nearly a double double average right now, gets on the glass and is just competent across the board.

Bench: Gleeson is a 6'9" walk-on from Australia who has made it into the rotation as s senior. He's really bad. Silva is a 6'4" freshman guard who likes to shoot it and has the capability to get hot and cause some problems, even if he hasn't so far. Bernal is a 6'8" wing that received a few starts earlier in the season and in my opinion should still be there. He's got offensive talent to be a problem in the A-Sun.

Coach: Joshua Castello, 34 years old. 20-22 career record. 2nd season at FGCU.

Stud recruiter who spent 3 seasons at a solid Auburn program before getting his first head job. He'll bring the talent to Fort Myers and is a good bet to be out the door in a few years.

Serrano is back in the lineup at point guard even though he's not quite 100% just yet. Like VCU the FGCU Eagles really lack some post depth and it would be great to be able to take advantage of it, but I don't know if we have the kind of post depth we need to do that. I like our odds of getting back to .500.

First media time out is at 13:12 and we trail 10-14. Bartell has 7 early points and Serrano has 3 assists, but we're being killed on the glass by the Eagles so far, 9-4. Nason has two fouls.

After falling behind by 10, we come back with an 8-0 run keyed by a couple of Bartell three pointers that has him up to 15 points and the score to 18-20 with 8:39 left. FGCU calls timeout. Nason is back in with 2 fouls.

Last media timeout of the half is at 2:44 and we lead 36-30. Serrano has 5 points to go with 5 assists, and Bass has been very productive with 7 points, 4 boards and 3 assists plus a steal. Nason is back on the bench but still has just the two fouls, I intend to keep him there until half.

We fall apart a bit down the stretch, but luckily FGCU doesn't really take advantage and the half time score is Appalachian State 36 - Florida Gulf Coast 33. Bartell leads us with 17. I like the odds for Nason to hit a few shots in the second half, we'll need him to if we're going to pull out the victory.

I call timeout with 15:14 left, and we're down 38-43. Just one basket in the second half so far, and suddenly the game has completely flipped. Bass comes in for Ramage.

And for the most part it has worked, with 11:48 left we lead 48-47, as Bass has a basket, a few rebounds and another assist and he's got an outside chance at an impressive looking double double.

Ramage hits one of two free throws with 6:07 on the clock and it pulls us to 59-61. Both teams have gone cold, and Serrano has had some turnover issues the last few minutes.

Serrano turns it over again, his 5th, with 5:22 left and we trail 59-67. Do or die time.

Die it is. The final score is Florida Gulf Coast 74 - Appalachian State 65. Their entire starting lineup ends up in double figures and they were just a couple of individual rebounds away from having three double doubles and not too far away from a triple double. Their starters played a lot of minutes. Bass had a strong game and so did Bartell. Bass might take Ramage's spot for the next game. A wasted opportunity on a road game we could have won.

SFPA is a 20 prestige school and one that has largely been a middling team in their conference for the last 70 years. The 20's were decent for them, but overall they have 7 NCAA appearances but have never made it past the 1st round. Their 5-5 record comes from a pretty weak non-con schedule so far, an A-10 team and a MAC team are probably the toughest teams they've played so far.

They've had some good games scoring the ball and have been a very efficient three point shooting team so far. They are without their starting post Chas Thrash who is out for another month. He was averaging 10.6 and 8 boards before his injury.

PG: Bond, 5'11", Junior: Played 14 minutes a game last year and averaged 7 a game. A very aggressive offensive player who will put up 6 or 7 threes a game. More of an undersized shooting guard than anything, though.

SG: Dinsmore, 6'0", Senior: Walk-on who started last year. Not bad at all for a walk-on, does a decent job defensively and shoots the ball pretty well.

SF: Durant, 6'11", Sophomore: Big wing who does a good job on the glass, but struggles offensively. Odd player.

PF: Huerta, 6'9", Junior: Starting for the injured Thrash, played 7 minutes a game last year. Besides rebounding, he's not much.

C: Hefner, 6'9", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 10 and 6 last season. A productive big man who shows up in the box score every where you'd like him to, always a threat for a double double.

Bench: Gallego is a 6'4" freshman guard with some chops that will probably turn into a solid guard for his league as soon as next season. Oakley is a very strong defender on the wing and is a threat to knock down a few shots. Tony Trout, an unappealing senior big man will see a few minutes as well. I get the sense that they are pretty creative with their lineup over the course of the game.

Coach: Derrick Wages, 42 years old. 17-22 career record. 2nd season at SFPA. Spent a long time at Yale before a few years at St. Bonaventure and one at Indiana before getting the SFPA gig. Good recruiter, just barely okay coach.

Serrano is back to 100% and is at point guard, like a lot of the teams we've been playing lately they really lack some depth and if we can ever get them in foul trouble we should be able to take advantage of it as one thing we do have for a 10 prestige team is some decent depth.

Southern Conference update, a few teams have already played some conference games:
