    1969-1970 Game 11 Results

I do decide to leave Ramage in the starting lineup, but will be liberal with my use of Bass.

The second media time out is at 11:40 and we lead 18-7 and SFPA is really struggling to score. Bartell has 6 points and Nason 7. Serrano has 2 fouls and will sit a while.

I didn't play Woodworth in the last game, the first game he hasn't played in all season and it was probably a mistake. He's good defensively and every once in a while he gets a few buckets, this was one of those time as he has 4 points and 2 boards in his 5 minutes today. With 4:30 left we lead 28-16.

Flores hits two threes in the last two minutes, and the last one is with just a few seconds left in the half. Without that, this would be a different ball game. At half, the score is Appalachian State 34 - St. Francis PA 25. Both teams are struggling offensively, but we've had a few guys nail some threes, and that's been the difference. Because of his late treys, Flores leads us with 8 points which is already just one off his career high.

The first 6 minutes are very sloppy, and with 14:18 left we lead 39-30. Both teams are missing shot after shot, and it's just a few free throws on each side mainly. Serrano picks up his 3rd and 4th as did McLoughlin and Bartell is 1-10 from the field, and yet we're up by 9.

Media timeout at 10:42 and we lead 49-37. Nason is quickly us to 15 points and has 7 rebounds as well. Flores has another triple and is into double figures for the first time in his career.

6:41, media timeout and we lead 55-41. Ramage has 8 and 10 while Bass is really struggling. Serrano fouls out on the next play.

I call a timeout with 3:58 to get the starting lineup in, plus Flores for the fouled out Serrano. We lead 61-47.

We are able to run away from them even more by the end of it, and our defense holds another team to sub 30% shooting. Final score: Appalachian State 67 - St. Francis PA 50. Flores gets a well deserved player of the game award after a career game, though I'd probably give it to Nason's 17 and 7. Bartell had a very rough game, while Ramage showed why he averaged 11 and 8 as a sophomore, his poor play this year makes me forget he's got some established stats here. Nice to get a comfortable win, just our 2nd of the sort of the year.

      1969-1970 Game 12

December 29th, 1969 at Bowie State Bulldogs (2-8)
      Conference: Northeast
      Location: Bowie, Maryland
      1968-69 record: 12-18 (9-7)

Bowie State is a 20 prestige team that was an originally added team way back in 1900, they joined the Northeast back in 1917 and have been there ever since. They are one of the few teams to make the NCAA tournament as an at-large independent, when they made it with a 24-8 record in 1913. I wish I could take a look at that squad and NCAA tournament, where they lost in the 1st round. They've only had two appearances since then, the last one coming just 3 seasons ago. They've largely been a doormat of the Northeast and this season looks no different.

This has been a horrible offensive team all year, doing very little right on that side of the ball. No injuries for the Bulldogs.

PG: Violette, 5'10", Junior: Started last year and averaged 8 points and 2.6 assists. Does have legit point guard skills and a nice jump shot, though his percentages have never shown it.

SG: Wimberly, 6'1", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 13.6 points a game. A very good three point shooter who passes it well but is a disaster defensively.

SF: Johnson, 6'2", Sophomore: Played 18.7 minutes a game last year and averaged 6.6 a game. Having a horrible season right now shooting the ball. Needs to concentrate on being a solid defender and play maker. But hopefully he takes a lot of shots this game.

PF: Delrosario, 6'6", Senior: Started last year and averaged 7 and 9. Undersized but can really rebound it. Doesn't do much else, but should be a problem for us on the glass.

C: Sowers, 6'10", Junior: Started last year and averaged 7 and 4. Horrible rebounder but solid defender and shot blocker. Has a little offense inside, but takes too many threes and makes too few of them.

Bench: Eure is a no defense, solid shooter off the bench. McMahon is an all defense backup with some of the worst offensive ratings possible in this game. Their bench is a collection of garbage and it's no wonder they are 2-8.

Coach: Frank Emmert, 46 years old. 95-154 career record. 9th season at Bowie State.

Solid coach and okay recruiter. It'd be a mistake for Bowie State to fire him, they could do worse and he's kept them around .500 in conference since he's been there.

Road game or not, this team is sorry and we should beat them. They did manage to beat a good Valparaiso team at home, but I think that was a fluke.

        1969-1970 Game 12 Results

With a win here, we'd head into conference play with a .500 record which I'd consider a positive given the talent and circumstances of this team so far. We do have one more non-con game deep into February on the road at St. Thomas Aquinas.

2nd media time out and we lead 20-10 with 11:16 left. Ramage has 8 and Bass has 5 off the bench. Glad to see we're playing well right out of the gate against an inferior opponent.

6:26 left and we lead 30-24. Ramage has 8, but Serrano just made a couple of baskets and it would be nice if he could finally get going the way I know he can.

After Bowie State cut it to 3, we're able to battle back a bit and Serrano hits a jumper at the buzzer to give us a 7 point lead and him 10 points. Appalachian State 43 - Bowie State 36. Ramage has 10 as well and Bartell 7. We have some odd foul trouble. Nason, Bartell and McLoughlin have 2, but Bracey and Flores both have 3. So, we need a few wings to tighten up and stay out of foul trouble.

13:43 left, first media timeout, and we lead 49-43. Both teams have come out pretty cold and have missed a lot of shots to start the half. Wimberly for Bowie has gotten it going and hit some threes which he's very capable of.

We go on a nice run to lead into the 9:08, under 12 media timeout. We lead 58-47. Serrano is up to 16, which is a season high for him and really the first solid game he's had this season. Naso has 12.

I call timeout after a Bulldog three makes it 64-60 with 5:43 left. Too close for comfort as we've gone cold and Bowie State is finally knocking down some jumpers.

Both teams are trying to out self-destruct the others and when the last media timeout signals at 3:28, we lead 64-61. Bartell and Nason both have 4 fouls. The entire original starting lineup is in the game to try to wrap this one up.

Eure hits a three for Bowie with 1:05 left to cut our lead 70-66. I call timeout to put Flores, an excellent free throw shooter, in for Nason. With Flores, Bartell and Serrano all on the court, I have 3 excellent shooters at the line.

Of course that means Serrano misses the front end of a one and one. Luckily, they miss their shot on the other end and foul McLoughlin on the rebound.

He gets to shoot two and makes one of them and we lead 71-66 with 46 seconds left.

They miss their next two shots and Bartell and Serrano both get rebounds and both get fouled and both hit both free throws and that will result in the final score of Appalachian State 75 - Bowie State 66. They cut it to 3 a time or two, but we pretty well controlled the game from beginning to end. Ramage had a very strong, efficient game. While Nason and Serrano both ended up with 18 points, but both needed a lot of shots to do it. Nason shot 15! three pointers. We take a .500 overall record into conference play. I forgot to mention that walk-on wing Gattis played a few minutes in the 1st half with all the foul trouble and got a rebound and a basket during it.

          December 1969 Update

We go 3-5 in the month, but head into conference play on a 2 game winning streak into a conference that looks like one of the worst in the nation. So, I'll consider it a good month. With Serrano coming into form, it does give us 3 legit perimeter players offensively. One of Bartell, Nason or Serrano should have a solid game each time out. And there will be a few games where all of them are hitting that we'll really put up some points. The loss of Florio hurts, he was one of the few guards I have that can defend, plus he was a decent emergency 3rd point guard.

Recruiting is going pretty well and I like our odds to compete in the Southern Conference, so two months in it is looking pretty good.

          December Recruiting Update

Two more scholarships taken, both by guards. I am excited about the guards I'm bringing in, but they all do have one flaw in common, they all are garbage defender. Luckily, they can all score the ball and that should enough to pick up quite a few wins in this league and that we'll need to grab a lot of defensive posts next year when those spots cycle through.

          The guys we signed:

A JUCO point guard that looks like he can really shoot it and is a solid passer. As mentioned above, he can't defend. But, he'll challenge right away for the starting point guard spot next season.

Ultra-athletic guard who had 100 prestige Florida State taking a look at him apparently. He looks like he could develop into a point guard down the line, and can use his athleticism to get to the basket. Should be an interesting player in a few years. Again, horrible defender, bu at least he can grab a steal or two.

Samford is a 23 prestige school. Relative to their history which has been pretty ugly, the last 20 years have been a golden age. They do have 5 NCAA appearances in the last 20 years. They've never made it past the 1st round.

Samford has had a very hard time with the three point shot this season, and have been lit up by outside shots this season. Rutherford is out and it's a pretty major loss as he's easily their most competent guard.

PG: Greiff, 6'7", Senior: Started 10 games last year and played 14.4 minutes a game. Good outside shooter, but not very aggressive. Being forced to play point guard and he's not really built for it.

SG: Matlock, 6'3", Senior: 4 year starter. Averaged 18.3 points a game last season. Really good at getting to the basket, a decent three point shooter but has been horrible this season just 4-39. 3.7 assists a game this season.

SF: Osborn, 6'7", Freshman: Pretty solid, does a little bit of everything, in a few years will be rounded into a pretty solid player I think.

PF: Martinez, 6'10", Senior: Played 19 minutes a game last year and averaged 4 and 3. Really good defender who isn't afraid to shoot a few threes, but he misses most of them.

C: Morozov, 7'1", Center: 3 year starter, averaged 8 and 7 last season. Having a strong season offensively with nearly 12 a game, does a good job rebounding the ball as well. Poor defender inside and slow.

Bench: Billings is a 6'4" wing that really shoots it well, but is a sieve defensively. Audley is an Aussie senior that is finally in the rotation. Rebounds well and does an okay job defensively. Hart, a senior walk-on is having to play quite a bit of backup point guard minutes. He's not very good, but competent as far as walk-ons go.

Coach: Gavin Mannino, 56 years old. 75-101 career record. 6th season at Samford.

Just a very average coach that is probably about to be booted. Was at Georgia State as an assistant for 3 years before getting the head job and back in the late 40's was an assistant here at Appalachian State.

Like the teams we've been playing, the bench depth falls off really quick. Matlock is good enough to beat us by himself and they have enough guys who can score it enough to hold their own despite their record and at their place.

              1969-1970 Game 13 Results

Pardon the bad updates, but all the way to the 9:27 mark, where we survive an initial Bulldog surge, and we now trail by just 18-21. Morozov is having his way with us with 8 points already. We have a very evenly spread output currently, with 6 players scoring and none with more than 4.

5:41 left, and we trail 28-31. We still have nobody with more than 5 points, while most of Samford's score have been split between Morozov and Matlock. We really need Samford to foul so we can get into their bench.

Things get completely out of control to end the half and suddenly we're being destroyed by a 2-10 team. The score is Samford 55 - Appalachian State 38. Morozov has 16 and Matlock 12 for Samford, while Ramage and Bartell both have 8.

11:44 left and we trail 47-61. Morozov has 20 now and is killing us inside. We have 13 turnovers, most of them being unforced.

It's likely going to be too little too late, and with 3:22 left we're down 60-71. Serrano is up to 14 points.

By the end of the game, we just can't stop them regardless if we're in zone or man. Morozov absolutely destroyed us inside, and we didn't have anyone that could stop them. Samford had just 6 team fouls the entire game, which is hard to imagine. Not how I wanted to start conference play. Final score: Samford 78 - Appalachian State 66. Ramage finished with a double double, while Bartell really struggled from the field and Nason and Serrano weren't exactly way that much better.

They've struggled defensively and have had turnover problems most of the season. They have lost to some pretty weak teams. They beat Western Carolina at home for their one win in their one conference competition.

PG: Patterseon, 6'1", Sophomore: Played 9 minutes a game last year. Probably better suited off the ball as a secondary playmaker. He is probably shooting over his head right now. Poor defender.

SG: Morelock, 6'0", Freshman: Having a tremendous freshman year and is really shoot the ball well, 43-102 from beyond the arc. Not sure why he isn't the point guard right now with the ball skills he has. A horrendous defender, he'd be in the SEC if he could guard. Will be a pain in the *** the next 4 years.

SF: Lederman, 6'5", Junior: Started last year and averaged 9 points and 5 boards. Okay defender, not too bit of a threat on offense.

PF: Shirey, 6'10", Senior: Started 5 games last year and averaged 20.5 minutes a game and 8 points and 4 boards. Talented big man with some range to his game, though he's not shooting well so far this season. Solid defender who does okay on the glass.

C: Archambault, 7'1", Senior: Big monster who has started 45 of his 108 career games. Shoots pretty high percentages normally, but doesn't rebound very well for his height. They have a very large front line.

Bench: Gwinn is a 6'8" post who gets 21 minutes a game and is pretty productive off the bench. Stacey is a 6'5" wing who can score it a little bit and helps out on the glass. Claus is a 6'2" guard with a nice three point shot but little else.

Coach: Napoleon Corcoran, 52 years old. 69-39 career record. 4th season at Wofford.

Not a great coach, but he's done very well his first 3 years at Wofford, if he has a decent season this year, I could see him taking off to a new school. 3 straight 20 win seasons, frankly I'm surprised he is still here.

They've got a very young backcourt that will be really tough in a couple of years, hopefully our zone and defense can hold them in check enough for our senior guards to take control of the game. Really don't want to start 0-2 in conference.

                  1969-1970 Game 14 Results

First media time out is at 15:05 and we trail 7-8. Bartell has 4 early points on a couple of mid range jumpers.

Some of our best free throw shooters are missing free throws, but with 7:58 left we lead 27-22. Ramage has 6 and 3. Bartell has 5 points but also two fouls. Serrano currently leads us with 8 points on 3-5 shooting. Our only chance at being competitive and maybe grabbing a top 4 finish in conference is him playing well.

Last media time out of the 1st half at 3:09 and we lead 40-31. Serrano and Nason both have 12, while their freshman star Morelock is really struggling so far and has just 6 points. We should have 4 or 5 more points due to free throws.

At half time the score is Appalachian State 43 - Wofford 35. Our offense, minus the free throws (I'll quit bringing it up) has been pretty strong and we've done a good job on the glass. Wofford has yet to hit a three, which probably isn't something to count on in the 2nd half. Nason has 12 and 6, and his 16 points, 5.5 rebound average is certainly the surprise of the year to me.

Both teams are hot to start the second half, and we've stretched our lead out just a bit and lead 53-44 with 15:04 left. Bartell has come out hot in the 2nd half with some buckets and is up to 11. He did miss another free throw, his second of the game. Coming into the game he was 44-46 from the line this year, good for 96%.

11:23 left and we lead 58-46. Serrano has 17 points now, while Ramage just needs one more rebound to go with his 13 points for a double double.

We go on a three point shooting rampage, hitting 3 in a row, two from Nason and one from Bass, and it forces Wofford to call timeout, because it is getting out of control. We lead 76-52 with 6:07 left. Serrano's 19 still leads us, but Nason is quickly catching up with 18 points.

3:54 left, we lead 81-59 and I'll bring in the reserves.

The reserves play horrendous defense, Claus hits three from beyond the arc in about a 90 second span and if they had hit the three they shot with 10 seconds left, it would have been a single digit game. No matter, final score is Appalachian State 85 - Wofford 73. Ramage had 16 and 13, and our perimeter players all had at least fairly lofty point totals. Bartell went on to miss one more free throw, his 3rd of the game, which means he missed more in one game than he had the entire season combined up to this point.

First conference win as a coach, and nice to not fall into an 0-2 hole to start the season.

This is awesome. I had been considering picking up FBCB for a long time, and reading this inspired me to finally follow through. I'm learning the ropes, but since you have done a lot of customizing with the universe, I'm wondering if you can tell me if a particular setup is possible. I'd like to start with somewhere around 100-150 teams, and only the 32 team NCAA tournament enabled. Some conferences, but a lot of independents. Over time I'd like to add teams as you have, add conferences, and expand the post-season. Just wondering if that description raises any red flags from your experience in tinkering with the universe.

Go App State, seems like the squad you have now is the kind that could get hot and make a run in a tournament, but not enough D to win consistently. Hope you can bring some talent to Boone over the next couple of seasons. Speaking of...your 7'4" recruit...how much does height matter in this game? Having played a lot of CH2K8, dude would be a monster not only at rebounding, but even at scoring if user controlled.

                    Look forward to reading more!

                      Thanks for the reply!

I've never started with fewer than the default numbers of teams (360 or whatever it is), but I believe you can delete teams from the editor screen which is under tools at the top of the menu. There might be a better way to do this, but I think you could start a new league, make sure you haven't clicked the Conference Movement button yet, since that is the only time you can edit things, and go in and delete all the teams you don't want now.

Then each season during the Conference Movement period you could go to tools -> Edit Current League and then make all the changes you want, add teams, add/delete conferences, whatever you wanted to do. But as soon as you hit that button and move onto the next phase you can't make any more structural changes.

I always make a copy of my save file at the end of each season as sometimes certain changes make the game glitch. As far as the tournament goes, I think you can lower it to 32 teams, but I don't think any lower than that. And I know you can't increase it more than 68. But, it shouldn't be any problem to make the league you want, it just takes time and patience. Let me know if you have any other things pop up and I'll see if I can help, with the amount of hours I've put into the game, I'm a bit of a self-proclaimed expert!

From what I can gather, height does matter a little bit. I think it makes guys rebound a little bit beyond their ratings and I know (I believe I read the creator of the game saying this once upon a time) that it does positively affect field goal percentage.

But, it's not anything like the dominance that a behemoth can have in 2k8. A 7'4" scrub is still going to be a scrub in FBCB, but he might rebound 10% better and shoot 10% better than a 6'8" scrub.

                      Thanks again for posting!

                        1969-1970 Game 15

                        January 8th, 1970 at UNC Greensboro Spartans (1-12) [1-1]
                        Conference: Southern
                        Location: Greensboro, North Carolina
                        1968-69 record: 11-20 (8-8)

UNC-Greensboro is an 8 prestige team, which is even worse than we are. Even though they managed a .500 conference record last year, the last 20 years of history have been pretty ugly for them. They haven't finished about .500 in conference since the 1950-51 season. They had a decent stretch in the 40's, but they's really been a bottom feeder for the majority of their history. They did manage to pull an upset in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament back in 1949-50 after a 21-14 (7-9) season. But, I don't have the file from that season so no real information on it. Just two NCAA appearances all time.

At first glance, they have a major lack of talent and have horrible offensive and defensive numbers. They played a decent non-con schedule, but there were at least 3 or 4 opportunities to pick up a win. They did defeat Elon at home in their conference opener, Elon is decent for this conference, so it does give me a little worry that they'll give us a game since we're playing at their place.

They are without starting SF Royce Brown, who will be out another three weeks. In 10 games he's averaging 9.6 points a game on awful percentages.

PG: Alexander, 6'4", Sophomore: Started 1 game last year and averaged 17.6 minutes and 4.5 points a game. At 12.2 this season. Big guard that is having a very hot first half of the season shooting the ball. His percentages are likely going to fall. Not a good passer either.

SG: Rieger, 6'5", Junior: Started last year and averaged 7 points and 4.5 rebounds. A really good outside shooter, but probably doesn't shoot enough only about 6 three point attempts a game and for a team as starved for offense as they are, he should let it rip a dozen times a game. Poor defender, but is active when it comes to getting steals. Their best player.

SF: Ovalle, 6'6", Junior: Starting for the injured Brown. Played 7 games last year, a total of 10 minutes. He really stinks.

PF: McCune, 6'7", Senior: Started last year and averaged 7 and 7. Not half bad, has some skills and is competent in most categories. But, shouldn't be a 30 minutes a game guy like he is.

C: McSweeney, 6'9", Senior: Played 8 games for a total of 27 minutes last year. Really bad big man who like a lot of his teammates, should not be in a position to play starters minutes.

Bench: They do have a highlight on their bench, freshman point guard, Benning. He's 5'10" can score it a little bit and isn't a half bad defender. I'd start him just for the potential down the road. Will be a solid guard in a few years. Everette is their post reserve and I don't see why he isn't starting. He plays solid defense, rebounds a little and has some three point range to his game. I'd have him starting at the 4, for sure. Their other reserve post, Paez, should probably be starting as well. But, he's not as good as Everette. Henry is a solid shooter off the bench who will get 10 minutes a game.

Of their bench players, if I were in charge, I'd have three of them starting. Pretty odd.

Coach: Derrick Mantooth, 59 years old. 59-161 career record. 8th season at UNC Greensboro.

Maxed out scout, and okay defensive coach, not much otherwise. Probably time for UNC Greensboro to cut him loose before they get knocked out of the conference.

These guys are really, really, really bad. Road games can always get weird, but this sure should be a game we can take. A win here would get us over .500 for the first time in a while.

If it wasn't for Ramage scoring 8 of our 10 points, we'd really be in trouble. With 13:14 left, we trail 10-12. Makes me nervous to get off to a rough start against such a bad team, even if we are only 7 minutes into the game.

Flores hits a three with 9:39 left to tie the game at 20. Bartell picked up his 2nd and 3rd foul on back to back plays after I stupidly didn't take him out immediately. Ramage has 10 points now. Serrano and Flores are the owners of our two made three pointers.

The last media time out of the half is at 3:03 and it's all tied up at 31.
We got up by 7, just to let it all back rapidly as they hit back to back threes. Ramage is at 12. I played Bartell, with 3 fouls, for about 45 seconds before a media timeout to give Serrano a breather and luckily he didn't foul and even hit a three pointer. Nason has two fouls to add to our foul trouble. Bracey and Flores have already combined for 16 minutes and just 3 points.

Bracey fouls 3 times in the last minute of the half, and some UNCG free throws means the half time score is UNC Greensboro 35 - Appalachian State 33. Not promising against this garbage-*** team. Ramage is doing well with 12 and 4, and Serrano has 9. Our problem is our defense has been awful, we'll switch it up a bit in the second half and see how it goes.

12:05 left in the 1st half and I swear we've been called for 4 charges so far, but I don't want to go back and look because I might be wrong. Anyways, we trail 42-47.

Serrano is 4-15 and Nason is 1-7, and it's the main reason we're losing 48-52 with 7:39 left. As bad as our offense has been, our defense has been okay in the second half and has created some turnovers. But, I'm about to go to bed and I don't want to lose this game.

Alexander nails a 3 with 5:28 left to make the score 50-61 and we're just getting beat now. I call a timeout. Serrano has 4 fouls now, 3 of which I think are charges.

Bartell gets a layup, then a steal and a pull up three pointer and it makes UNCG call timeout and we're down 55-61, with 4:38.

Nason hits a three, then Bartell gets fouled and hits both of his free throws, and now it's 60-61 with 3:42 left. UNCG has not scored in the midst of all this, a 10-0 run. Also, in the midst of all this, Flores was hurt, but can still in the game, but it has him at 78%.

Nason hits a jumper to give us our first lead since early in the 2nd half. But, Serrano fouls on the next play, his 5th, and now the injury to Flores means I either have to play him at 80% or go with Bracey. I go with Bracey. Rieger, the UNCG guard hits both and UNCG has the lead again 62-63 with 2:17 left.

Bartell nails a three, and it's followed by a UNCG 3 second call. Ramage is then hurt on the ensuing possession and will have to leave the game. Bass comes in. We lead 65-63 with 1:42 remaining.

Nason misses a three and it's followed by a UNCG turnover, their 14th, and we have the ball and a 2 point lead with 45 seconds left. Flores is a very good free throw shooter and replaces Bracey in the lineup.

Bartell is fouled and will shoot the 1 and 1, he was at 91% coming into the game. So, of course he only makes the front end. Up 66-63 with 35 seconds left. A lot of time left, far too much to foul.

Their freshman Benning nails a three with 25 seconds left, game tied at 66. I call timeout to get Bracey back in for Flores. He's already a little better than him offensively, even without Flores 20% injury.

And, of course, Bartell inbounds the ball to Bracey who takes it up court and drills a three and we lead 69-66 with 21 seconds left. Still too much time to foul.

Benning misses a three pointer this time and Nason ends up with the rebound, his 5th, and shoots another 1 and 1, and he again makes the first and misses the second. But, that one is all we needed, since it gave us a 4 point lead and the final score of Appalachian State 70 - UNC Greensboro 66. It's pretty amazing we won that game, if UNCG hadn't essentially imploded down the stretch, we wouldn't have had a chance. Some bad news is that Ramage is done for a month and will probably miss 8-9 games. He's averaging 10 and 8, and is easily our biggest threat in the post offensively.

But, a road win and a conference win is always nice and we'll head back home for the next one.

                            Conference: Southern
                            Location: Charleston, South Carolina
                            1968-1969 record: 18-15 (8-8)

College of Charleston (CoC) is a 26 prestige team, that has been on a pretty nice upswing the last 10 years, finishing .500 or better in conference play in 7 of the last 8 seasons. Prior to that their history has been pretty lacking besides a nice little stretch from 1906-09.

PG: Paz, 5'9", Senior: 3 year starter. Averaged 11.3 points a game last year. More of an undersized 2 guard than anything. Scores pretty well, but puts up a lot of shots. Excellent free throw shooter.

SG: Bowser, 6'2", Senior:4 year starter. Averaged 21.2 a game last year. A very prolific shooter that made 161 three pointers last year and is currently averaging 5 a game this year. Solid defender as well. A tremendous player for this level.

SF: McKnight, 6'8", Junior: Played 6 minutes a game last year. Doesn't shoot the ball from range, but will attack the basket and has been successful this year at it. No defense.

PF: Krantz, 6'8", Sophomore: Played 5 minutes a game last year. Has some offensive talent, but doesn't get too many shots with their perimeter players taking up so many.

C: Eggleston, 6'9", Sophomore: Played a total of 2 minutes last year. Not much. Has the potential to be average across the board.

Bench: Segarra is a solid looking freshman with a developed offensive game. Numbers is a 6'9" freshman post who plays solid defense and has some untapped offensive ability. Blow transferred from Campbell, and the 6'8" sophomore is a really good post defender but is horrendous offensively.

Coach: Justin Jordan, 60 years old. 47-35 career record. 3rd season at COC.

Good scout and coaches offense well, poor otherwise. I don't know what kind of recruiting class he has coming in, but with Bowser graduating, he's about to fall on some hard times.

Bowser is good enough to single handedly beat us, he's capable of going for 35+ against my weak defenders. We've played solid defense percentage wise this season, but I think that is more to the lack of talent we've played than anything. If Bowser isn't hitting at an efficient clip, I like our odds.

                              1969-1970 Game 16 Results

Reminder (to myself) that Ramage is out for about a month after an injury last game. Dave Bass will replace him in the starting lineup, his first start since the first game of the year. Flores is at 87% and will play.

We start off in 1-3-1 zone and will double Bowser and jumping ahead to the second media time out with 11:56, it isn't working too well. We trail 11-16. Bass just picked up two very quick fouls and will have to sit. Bartell has 2 as well. Serrano and Bass both have 4 to lead us so far. Joe Sanders will probably see some decent minutes the next month or so and his ratings argue that he probably should have before this.

7:33 left and we trail 15-19. Both teams have gone cold. Serrano has 8 points and 6 boards, but everyone else has struggled. Nason has just 2 points. It's McKnight, not Bowser who is hurting us so far, which worries me as Bowser will get going eventually.

Bowser hits his first 3 of the game, but Bracey gets fouled and knocks down a couple of free throws after the media timeout at 3:38 to give us the lead again, 27-26. Serrano has been excellent, and Nason has gotten a couple of easy buckets. We've yet to hit a three and have only attempted 4 so far.

We struggle down the stretch in the 1st half and it gives us a half-time score of College of Charleston 33 - Appalachian State 30. Serrano has 11 points and 6 boards, but has missed a few shots in a row. Pretty much everyone else has struggled on the perimeter. We're 0-6 from three, which certainly won't maintain. McKnight leads COC with 12, Bowser has just 8 and also 2 fouls.

A bad start to the second half, with 15:55 left we trail 35-43. Bartell has been horrible 0-7 for the game, and I'm taking him out for Bracey.

I call timeout with 11:34 left, and we're trailing 42-57. Bowser has gotten going. Twice in the last few minutes, he missed a three, got his own rebound and then swished a three immediately afterwards. Nason finally did connect on a three pointer though. He's 1-8 this game.

Serrano actually goes on a nice little run at the end of the game to make the final score look slightly more palatable. College of Charleston 81 - Appalachian State 64. Bowser ended up with 21 and hit 5 threes, right on his season average. Serrano was solid, but nobody else was and Bartell hit a couple of late shots to salvage what would have been a ghastly line in the box score. Not having Ramage is going to be tough for us us to overcome, he's the only real offensive threat we have in the post on this squad. Back to .500 overall and in conference.

                                1969-1970 Game 17 Preview

                                January 17th, 1970 at The Citadel Bulldogs (3-12) [1-3]
                                Conference: Southern
                                Location: Charleston, South Carolina
                                1968-69 record: 12-18 (7-9)

The Citadel is a 10 prestige team which puts them perfectly even with us. They do have 3 NCAA appearances in their history, but none since 1931-32. Their best postseason performance ever was making it to the Ci.com finals in 1950-51 where they lost to Loyola Chicago. They haven't won 10 games in conference in 14 straight season and it doesn't look promising that they'll break that streak this season.

PG: Greenhaw, 6'1", Junior: Played 22 minutes a game last year and averaged 6 points a game. Not afraid to shoot, but it doesn't go in that often. A 37% shooter for his career.

SG: Barr, 6'1", Freshman: Good defender, and eventually will be a nice jump shooter. But, he's over extended having to play 30 minutes a game right now.

SF: Seng, 6'7", Junior: Played 9 minutes a game last year and averaged 4 points. Had a really nice scoring rate last season, but has struggled shooting the ball this year. 11-54 from three.

PF: Fluker, 6'9", Sophomore: Played 78 minutes last year. Has some skill and is a solid passer for a big man and will get on the glass. But, his defense and offense aren't much. Will be solid as a senior.

C: Bishop, 6'11", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 10 and 4. Has real offensive talent that makes him a threat in the post. Doesn't rebound well or defend, but will block a shot or two.

Bench: Robertson is 5'5" and plays 20 minutes a game, he's decent, even though his shooting percentage has been horrible (32%). Carrier is a 6'8" freshman post who does a good job on the glass. They have a handful of perimeter players who each average 5 minutes a game or so, but none are really worth mentioning, except I guess, the senior 6'4" guard Elliott who is a lock down defender who can hardly score.

Coach: Paul Cooper, 46 years old. 114-157 career record. 2nd season at The Citadel.

Spent 7 years at Savannah State, with one excellent season, 1961-62 when they went 24-11 (10-6) and made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Not much besides that and it's why he got fired at the end of the 64-65 season. He spent 3 years at North Carolina as an assistant coach and is now back at it as a head coach. He's a maxed out scout and average defensively and as a recruiter, poor offensively.

These guys stink. But, it's a road game so you never know. We'll double Bishop inside and hope the other guys can't hurt us. We're going to play man, as bad as their perimeter players are offensively, I think our man defense might have a shot.
