Santa Barbara sounds like a fun team.

Any predictions on who will have the best and worst conference records?
?The Bulgarian Brothers - a story of two brothers (Oggy and Dinko) as they coach in the NCAA and the NBA.

I like Cal Poly, Santa Barbara and UC Davis to all be competing for the top spot in the conference. Pacific is also talented, but after last year when they were a mediocre team despite having two 80 overall players, I don't have a lot of confidence in them.

Long Beach State and UC Riverside both look really bad in my opinion but UC Riverside had a decent out-of-conference run albeit against very poor competition.

Hopefully Coach Reid can get them to a top 3 finish and either win the regular season or postseason tourney.

          Team Stats: Team Stats
          Lowenthal Leads Aggies to win
          December 31rst, 2009

Davis -- To celebrate New Year's eve the Big West kicked off conference play. UC Davis and Pacific matched up. Pacific once again has a talented team led by CJ Morgan but they struggled out of conference. UC Davis is off to their best start under head coach Keon Reid but are young.

The Aggies got out to an early lead in the game, led by a great start from Jimmie Harris who scored seven of the team's first ten points. They played great defense early, forcing turnovers and getting easy buckets. They carried this lead as their starters controlled the pace early in the first half. However, after the subs came in things began to change.

Pacific took advantage once UC Davis's starters started to get subbed out. Freshman big Chey Skeeter dominated the glass snagging several offensive boards and giving the Tigers a second chance opportunities. Pacific used a balanced attack passing the ball around until they found an open man.

Meanwhile, the Aggies couldn't find points, Niemer Jefferson missed open shot after open shot and Donnie Parks struggled in the paint. Pacific continued to storm back taking the lead with two minutes left in the half. Freshman point guard Elliah Haney did an excellent job of finding open cutters and getting the ball inside to bigs.

          UC Davis Stats:

          Pacific Stats:

The second half marked a distinct difference in the pace of the game. Both teams struggled from three in the first half. However, in the second half things open up from deep. Suddenly each team was knocking down deep threes. CJ Morgan and Niemer Jefferson went back and forth at one point. Todd Lowenthal buried a three with very little space.

However, UC Davis was able to bring the pressure up and start forcing turnovers again. This was led by Todd Lowenthal who had four steals. This allowed the Aggies to build a double-digit lead again. However, offensive troubles hit them again.

Terrell Smith lead Pacific on a 12-0 run to retake the lead, which was sparked after he hit back-to-back threes. UC Davis turned to Todd Lowenthal to carry them down the stretch, Lowenthal was magnificent, it seemed like he couldn't miss at times. As he bounced off defenders barrelling his way into the basket.

With thirty seconds left, Lowenthal drove past CJ Morgan and hit a layup to put UC Davis ahead. CJ Morgan let the clock wind down before attempting the game-winning shot for Pacific, it clanked off the side of the room as the Aggies jumped up in celebration.

Glad Lowenthal got hot at the end to help you get the victory. While Jefferson wasn't great, it's really nice seeing all those "1-1" from three statlines.

This is a very positive start to the season.

Yeah especially since a few of those people aren't exactly consistent shooters. I'm also glad to start off the conference schedule with a win after what happened last year once we hit conference play.

Thanks for pointing those out, I fixed them. I work a job where I do a large amount of writing so when I do these I tend to just spit them out and not proofread, that's why there are always some typos in my write-ups.

I feel you on not proof-reading. I re-read things from 2 years ago and think "ugh, that was a terrible typo" and edit it much later.

I really hope you can get 12+ wins in conference play. That would be huge.

                  Cal Rocketing up the Polls

It's a new year and conference play has begun. There's been a large amount of shake-up in the polls this week but one thing that remains the same is the Duke is on top. The Blue Devils have what should be an easy game against Army this week before running into 21rst ranked NC State to begin their conference slate.

We have a new number two team, following Florida's loss to Gonzaga, California has risen to number two. The Golden bears got a double-digit win over 25th-ranked Washington last week. Senior power forward Ryan Anderson had 44pts in the win. Anderson is having a senior season for the ages, being second in the NCAA with 27ppg.

The reigning champs have launched themselves back into the top 5, after a shocking loss to Akron to start the year they've righted the ship. Much of the success for the Wildcats can be attributed to their two-guard Alex English making a large improvement in his junior year. His points per game are up six compared to last season.

As mentioned before Gonzaga, got a huge win over Florida last week. The Zags edged the Gators out by five points in a high-scoring affair. Florida struggled with foul trouble in this one sending Gonzaga to the line 39 times. Gonzaga wasn't missing much at the charity stripe shooting 36/39 on their attempts.

Down the polls, Alabam has re-entered the top 25. The Crimson tide have been a bit of a disappointment this year but pollsters don't want to give up faith after they beat 17th-ranked Texas last week. However, other than that, Alabama has lost to a bad Creighton and Middle Tennessee team already this year. They also don't have any other major wins.

Looking at Mid-Majors, there hasn't been much movement in the top 5. Outside of Bucknell passing up VCU. The Rams continue to get support in the Mid-major poll despite their tough start to the year.

We see two new teams, Mercer and Illinois Chicago added to the top 10. The Mercer Bears have been tough to beat this year, their only loss coming to Ole Miss. They are led by Senior point guard James Florence who leads the nation with 33ppg. Florence is putting up the season for the ages and hoping to will his team to their team back to the NCAA tournament.

The Illinois Chicago Flames don't have anybody putting up all worldly stats but have a well-put-together and young squad. The Horizon League is looking to be a tough race between UW-Green Bay and Illinois Chicago.

Interesting to see Mercer in the mid-major top 10. It's hard for Atlantic Sun teams to get there.

I stole this screenshot off the internet, unfortunately. Yeah Mercer is pretty interesting especially since they have a guy averaging nearly 35ppg.

                        Team Stats: Team Stats
Aggies win With Second Half Surge
                        January 9th, 2010

Davis -- Both UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara have been predicted to finish towards the top of the Big West. They also both feature very young and talented teams. It's possible this could grow into an interesting rivalry over the next few years.

UC Davis was in control of this game early. Dedrick Watson was able to get a couple of easy shots in the post. In contrast, UC Santa Barbara struggled from deep. The Aggies built themselves an early 12-4 lead after a Todd Lowenthal layup.

The Gauchos started to creep back into, the game however. Damir Lang was able to set up a good in-and-out game with his brother Quentin. This was giving the Aggies some problems breaking what had been a strong defense. Senior point guard James Powell was also finally able to hit a three. After a Dedrick Watson turnover and a fastbreak layup on the other end, the Gauchos were suddenly tied with the Aggies. In the final seconds of the first half, Dominic Calegari hit a corner three to give the Aggies a slight edge.

                        UC Davis Stats:

                        UC Santa Barbara:

In the second half, the Aggies came out the gate once again. Niemer Jefferson hit his only three of the game and Donnie Parks created some opportunities off rolls for himself. The defense clamped up and the Gaucho's three-point troubles came back. UC Santa Barbara shot an abysmal 4-21 from deep in this game. Beating UC Davis when you're not hitting the three can be difficult. As Coach Keon Reid employed his twin towers line up of Watson and Youmans to defend the interior.

The second half, much like the entire game was a team effort from UC Davis. The Aggie's entire starting lineup was in double digits along with Joe Harden and Raymond Sims having solid games off the bench. Meanwhile, UC Santa Barbara wasn't getting much from their key contributers. James Powell who averages 15ppg, shot 4-12 scoring just nine. The Lang brothers also weren't able to repeat the brief success they found in the first half.

UC Davis pulled it's starters with a few minutes left in the game and up 16. Senior CJ Portz was able to come in and score on two free throws. However, walk on Shawn Daniel missed all three of his shot attempts.

Super well-rounded scoring by your starters and you really put them away in the second half. This is an encouraging sign for your progress toward winning the regular season title.

It's honestly been nice to just get these two early conference wins, as last year we entered conference play with a similar record then just completely bombed in conference play.

                              Aggies Enter Mid-Major top 25

By Martin Buchanon - Student Writer

                              Photo from practice earlier today
For weeks, we have been checking the polls every Monday morning hoping to see the Aggies in the Mid-Major top 25. Despite a strong RPI rating and wins over Colorado and Portland the Aggies haven't been getting much love from the pollsters. However, it appears a win over UC Santa Barbara, the Aggies 6th straight was enough.

However, this morning the Aggies sat in the 23rd spot, the first time in school history the program has ever landed on the poll. After practice today we caught up with coach Reid to get his thoughts. "We've started this season off very well. It's always great to see some recognition but we got a long way to go. The Big West is a good conference and we'll see some solid teams the rest of the way. We just need to keep building off what is working now" said Reid.

Sophomore small forward Jimmie Harris told us "this season has been really fun so far. We already knew we were one of the best mid-major teams, the polls are just catching up a little late."

UC Davis has no Problem with Titans
                                January 14th, 2010

Davis -- Last year CS Fullerton beat UC Davis twice. Both games were heartbreakers for the Aggies where they collapsed in the final seconds. However, CS Fullerton has seen a major roster overhaul from last year and is struggling in early conference play.

UC Davis grabbed control of the game early, their offense came out the gates hot. Jimmie Harris led the way early driving past defenders and using his body to get to the basket. He scored 8 of his 14 points within the first few minutes of the game. CS Fullerton was struggling on the other end, missing open threes and coughing up the ball. Freshman point guard Rodolfo Marigney in particular struggled. He shot 1-9 from deep and turned the ball over four times in the game.

The rest of CS Fullerton didn't do much better, only one player on their team even shot above 50%. UC Davis on the other hand shot close to 60% as a team.

                                UC Davis Stats:

                                CS Fullerton Stats:

In the second half, CS Fullerton was able to slow down the Aggies to a degree. Donnie Parks who had really taken over at one point in the first half had four turnovers in the second. Dedrick Watson was nearly invisible on offense it seemed. While Jimmie Harris and Niemer Jefferson missed several shots they shouldn't of.

The Aggies were able to do enough to keep control of the lead however, Todd Lowenthal and Joe Harden did most of their scoring in the second half. Taking the load on for the other Aggies whose shots weren't falling. With five minutes left in the half, the Aggies pulled their starters and the bench got a chance to see some extra time. Senior CJ Portz hit two relatively difficult shots in the post.
