Lowenthal can hit a three too but he's not a great shooter, this team has a lot of mid to upper 60s 3pt rated players who can knock the occasional wide open 3 down but only Lowenthal and Jefferson can be counted on.

I would've definitely liked to get a win there, I felt it was a winnable game for us. Jefferson had some great moments early, but then he went cold when late in the game. He's definitely got the potential to be great.

I agree, we'll really be using this out of conference schedule to be figuring out our offense. Unlike the previous two years, we don't have a clear offensive star to funnel the ball to.

        Team Stats: Team Comparison
Harden, Arizona St. too Much for UC Davis
        November 18th, 2009

Tempe -- Arizona State had an embarrassing loss to NJIT to star the season but since then have recovered with two blowout wins. The team is led by Junior guard James Harden. While not entering the season ranked the Sun Devils are expected to be one of the best teams in the PAC-10.

From the tip-off, James Harden showed why he is one of the best players in PAC-10. Harden hit two back-to-back threes in the second minute of the game. This put UC Davis down early. The Aggies struggled to get things back together. Todd Lowenthal had some early success but it was quickly stopped. The Aggies tied to move the ball around afterward, using their motion offense to try and create something.

The Aggies were eventually able to start scoring some but Arizona State's offense was just too much. The Sun Devils stroked it from three tonight shooting 13/27. Whilst UC Davis shot just 3/9 from deep. Any chance it looks like for the score to tighten, Arizona St. came up big.

        UC Davis Stats:

        Arizona St. Stats:

In the second half, the Aggies were able to find their offense. Freshman Donnie Parks had a great time rolling and cutting to the basket. He also hit several mid-range shots reaching a career-high of 16. Raymond Sims was another freshman star, the 6'3 point guard was able to gwr to the basket using his speed.

With Harden's work done, the Sun Devils looked at Christian Polk and Eric Boateng. The two seniors did most of their scorer in the second half and finished with a combined 29. Boatang in particular was a force on both sides getting ten boards and several steals.

As the game winded down, UC Davis made one more comeback attempt cutting the lead to 12. However, Arizona State wouldn't let them do this and got on a massive run of their own.

          Team Stats: Team Comparison
Aggies Sneak Away with win in Double OT
          November 30th, 2009

Boulder -- UC Davis came to Boulder motivated, seeing this game against Colorado as their best chance at getting a win over a power conference program. Colorado came into the game hot coming off a fourty point win over New Orleans.

Early on it was apparent that UC Davis would not be able to play their normal game. Colorado's defense was suffocating, not allowing any open shots and making the Aggie's work for just an inch of space. After six minutes of play, UC Davis was shooting under 20% from the field. Sophomore point guard Raheim Warsaw led the defensive attack with his energy and quickness.

Seeing this, Keon Reid adjusted, having UC Davis play a slow, methodical style of basketball his teams are not known for. Swinging the ball around and around, throwing it in and out of the post. Doing anything to find that slight mismatch that could allow them to score.

While UC Davis was trying to figure out their offense, Xavier Silas was showing why he is one of the best players in the Big-12. The Senior shooting guard was able to score from anywhere. Inside Caleb Patterson was impressive, snagging multiple offensive rebounds on one end and on the other being a defensive anchor.

Down sixteen with two minutes left, UC Davis started to identify the chink in Colorado's armor. Donnie Park was able to use his advantage in athleticism over Colorado's bigs to drive his way inside and get easy looks. This drew enough attention towards him that Dedrick Watson was able to open up his face-up game. The two-man game of the two bigs gave UC Davis some life on offense.

          UC Davis Stats:

          Colorado Stats:

Into the second half, this continued, however, as the paint opened up this allowed for other assets of UC Davis's game to as well. Todd Lowenthal who was a nonfactor in the first half was all of a sudden able to get to the basket.

With the momentum shifting the Buffalo's didn't change much. Their offense continued to click with now Warsaw and Jeremy Williams starting to score as well. Williams is a poor shooter but he was able to use his strength to get his way around the basket.

With Lowenthal needing a breather, the Aggies subbed in Raymond Sims. The freshman combo guard has been a solid scorer off the bench all season. On Friday he took it to another level, dicing up Colorado defenders and getting to the basket. His quick first step couldn't be stopped.

With the offensive faucet on the Aggies, continued to chip their way into the lead. Despite Colorado having a solid offensive half of their own. Eventually with two minutes left it was a tie game. The Aggies fouled Jeremy Williams sending the Buffalos into the bonus. However, Williams missed both free throws. On the ensuing possession, Dedrick Watson hit the shot to put the Aggies ahead.

However, Colorado quickly tied it up, things would continue to go back and forth. With thirty seconds left, Jimmie Harris hit a contested mid-range jumper that many thought could be the dagger. However, Xavier Silas turned back around and hit a layup with ten seconds to tie things up. The Aggies found Niemer Jefferson wide open for a game-winning mid-range jumper with two seconds left but he missed.

In the first overtime, a similar back and forth story ensued. Until with one minute left, Xavier Silas hit a three, then he stole the ball from Lowenthal and hit another. All of a sudden hope looked lost for the Aggies, but they kept fighting. Niemer Jefferson nailed a three-pointer with thirty seconds left. After a foul on Warsaw, he was able to make it a five-point game with twenty seconds left. Fans started to leave the arena, expecting that to be it. However, UC Davis drove it down and Todd Lowenthal hit a layup. They pressed the inbounds pass and stole the ball. Kicking it out to Raymond Sims who hit the tying three.

In the second overtime, momentum had clearly swung UC Davis's way as the Aggies got out to a quick six-point lead and never looked back. Holding the lead for the rest of the quarter.

Wow, what a game!! I'm shocked only 1 player fouled out despite going to double OT, but it is a huge win for you all. Best win coach Reid's career?

It was a pretty clean game in terms of fouls or at least they were pretty spread out. Hmmm.. this would probably have to be in competition with the Oregon State win last year as coach Reid's best win. Colorado is better than Oregon State but talent-wise this UC Davis team is also a step up from last years so I'm not sure.

Lol, I should've clarified in the report, that once we were able to identify the holes in their defense we sped things up hence why the jump in scoring in the second half + OT.

I think the double OT nature of this game gives it the edge.

Outstanding win! Hell of an adjustment to climb out of that first-half hole and a superb effort by Sims off the bench to go shot-for-shot with Colorado's Silas. Hopefully this is a momentum-shifter, and allows UC Davis to put together a strong close to non-conference play!

Feels good to get an OOC win over a major conference school, especially since I was really disappointed in how badly we lost to Arizona State. So turning around and getting a controller clenching win over Colorado was great.

Plus I'm hoping this is the year we crack the mid-major top 25 and this should help my RPI.

A Colorado/Oregon St. couple rivalry, I'm not sure if either of you guys have too much to brag about recently other than head-to-head matchups.

Yeah, the first half was honestly one of the weirdest games of college hoops 2k8, I've ever played. Colorado played so much differently on defense than any team I'd ever played. Sims came up huge, he's been a suprisingly solid scorer off the bench so far.

We have a game against #5 USC coming up, we'll need all the momentum we can get for that one.

                            2009-10 UC Davis Basketball Recruiting
Aggies Taking a Different Approach this Season

The short week-long in-season signing period has opened and UC Davis has already received their first commit. In the past seasons Keon Reid has been focused on recruiting some of California's top players, this year he looking for players who can play specific roles. The Aggies have currently offered three of their five scholarships.

Highly Touted SoCal JUCO Guard Signs with Aggies
Erick Duggins 6'2 - Shooting Guard - East Los Angeles College - 3 Star

With the Aggies starting lineup seemingly in place for the next two years, third-year coach Keon Reid has been looking for players to fill in the cracks. He decided he wanted to look into the JUCO ranks this year to find an experienced guard to add.

Erick Duggins is a sophomore at East Los Angeles College, he's been averaging 13ppg so far this season. A bit undersized at 6'2, he makes up for it with good man-to-man defense, athleticism, and effort. While not an elite shooter, Duggins isn't somebody you can leave open.

He's been at the top of UC Davis's board and today on the first day of the in-season signing period he committed to UC Davis.

                            Keon Reid visits Edwin Bakinde
Edwin Bakinde 6'8 - Small Forward - Los Angeles, CA - 2 Star

Despite being from northern California, Keon Reid has heavily recruited the Los Angeles area since arriving at UC Davis. Edwin Bakinde has been getting calls from Reid since after an impressive ABL campaign.

Slotted as a small forward, Reid thinks Bakinde could possibly be used as a stretch four in his offense. Bakinde, is a decent shooter and has good athleticism. He's also averaged 7 rebounds per game as a small forward. He's regarded as having below-average ball-handling and playmaking abilities, however.

Sunday, Reid visited Bakinde in the hopes of pushing him towards signing with UC Davis in-season but it doesn't seem likely.

He also has an offer from Pepperdine.

UC Davis Falling Behind with Tayborn
Russ Tayborn 6'8 - Small Forward - Rancho Cucamonga, CA - 2 Star

Russ Tayborn is another versatile wing the Aggies are interested in. The major difference between him and Edwin Bakinde is that Tayborn has gotten significantly more interest from other schools. Tayborn has had lots of contact with Arizona State and they are believed to be his top school at the moment. UC Davis is currently believed to be standing as a distant third option despite being his only scholarship offer.

Russ Tayborn would fill a similar role to Bakinde as well. Russ is, however, a better shooter and at 210lbs is more filled out. Comparing him more to Bakinde his basketball IQ and rebounding ability are perceived as worse. However, his playmaking and ball-handling are a step above Bakinde's.

He also has significant interest from UTEP, San Diego, and CS Bakersfield.

                            New Name Contacted this week
Gilbert Toussaint 6'7 - Power Forward - San Jose, CA - 2 Star

This week we heard that the Aggies had been in touch with a new name, Gilbert Toussaint. Toussaint does not have a scholarship offer from UC Davis but is an interesting prospect. He's averaged nearly a double-double while playing somewhat limited minutes in the ABL.

Unlike the past two recruits we mentioned, Toussaint is a traditional power forward. A bit undersized at 6'7, he has had to make it up in strength and craft use of his body. Toussaint is regularly able to jump up amongst the trees and snag a rebound.

                            National Recruiting News:

                            - Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters sign with UCONN.
                            - Tristan Thompson and Jared Sullinger going to La Salle.
                            - Victor Oladipo heading to Chapel Hill.
                            - Tobias Harris commits to Georgetown.
                            - Joe Harris signs with Gonzaga.

Duggins should be good and could push for a starting spot depending on how he looks. The rest of the prospects we'll have to hope and see, the biggest thing I need is just some more shooting.
