Re: A West Coast Story - College Hoops 2k8 Legacy
Damn, that's a tough way to end the season. Definitely showed some growth in the second half of the year, so hopefully that momentum carries into the next one. What's the recruiting class looking like?Comment

Re: A West Coast Story - College Hoops 2k8 Legacy
Yeah, despite the loss I felt like things came together there at the end of the season. Losing Vince Oliver will be a massive loss as he carried our offense but I think we can go into next year with some momentum.
It's currently been the dead period for the past few weeks but recruiting will open up after the tournament. The two big targets are Donnie Parks and Niemer Jefferson. Donnie Parks is a three-star prospect who's ranked as a top 125 player in the country. He is only 6'6 so pretty undersized but he has a game that is more modern. He can score at all three levels and is pretty athletic. We're currently in a battle for another three-star prospect Niemer Jefferson. Jefferson is an elite shooter but we're currently behind Pepperdine on his list.Comment

2008-09 NCAA Tournament
NCAA Tournament Seeds Announced
Finally we have reached the best time of the year, it's March and the madness is just a few days away. We saw some major shake-ups across the nation during the conference tournament.
The major story was the North Carolina Tarheels. After winning eighteen straight games, the Tar Heels lost two straight. Losing a close game to Duke in the final game of the regular season and then to Georgia Tech in the conference tournament. Despite the Tar Heels being a top 2 team all season, the reigning champs were given a second seed.
The number one seeds went out to Connecticut, Auburn, Washington, and Villanova. The debate surrounding Washington getting a top seed raged online. The Huskies finished the season ranked eighth in the country and had a loss just a week before.
The La Salle Explorers are another major story. The Explorers came out of nowhere at the end of the season. Finishing the year on a twelve-game win streak with multiple wins over ranked teams. They were given the third seed to the surprise of many.
A team to watch is the Davidson Wildcats led by Steph Curry. Everybody remembers the magical run the Wildcats went on just last year. Curry's hot shooting makes him one of the best players in college basketball and allows Davidson to contend with anybody. Despite being just a 13th seed, don't be surprised to see the Wildcats pull off an upset or two.
When it came to teams on the bubble San Diego St, Indiana, Georgia Tech, and Middle Tennessee all snuck in. Georgia Tech was the most controversial of these. Georgia Tech went 17-16 in the regular season but beat North Carolina in the conference tournament then went on to lose at the buzzer to Duke in the conference title game. The Yellow Jackets have the lowest win percentage of any team to ever receive an at-large bid in NCAA history.

Vince Oliver wins Big West Player of the Year
By Dennis Kirkpatrick - Senior Writer
Today, the NCAA award winners were announced along with this the Big West announced our conference awards. UC Davis Senior Vince Oliver was awarded the conference player of the year.
Upon being given the award Oliver had this to say "I want to thank Coach Reid and the entire UC Davis family for supporting me. Without that backing, I wouldn't be getting this award."
Although the Aggies didn't make the NCAA tournament, Vince Oliver led UC Davis to their first winning season since entering division-I four years ago. Oliver led the conference with an 18.5ppg scoring average along with leading the conference in three-point shots made overall and per game.
His role as a leader on the court is unquestionable, whenever UC Davis was in a tough position they looked to their Senior captain. "Vince is a gamer, he never tensed up in a big moment and he was always ready when we needed him," said UC Davis head coach Keon Reid.
A talented shooter, Oliver was most known for his relentless attack of the basket. Finding crafty ways to score around the rim. Although not known as a playmaker, Oliver showed passing ability in the few times he was asked to be a playmaker this season. Racking up eight assists against UC Riverside in a game early in the season.
Oliver is expected to go undrafted in the NBA draft although there is some interest from NBA D-League teams in picking him up as a prospect.
Other Awards:
NCAA player of the year: Kevin Love - UCLA, Sophmore
Coach of year: Jim Calhoun - UCONN
Mid Major Player of the Year: Josh Heytvelt - Gonzaga, Senior
Defensive Player of the year: Shawn James - Duquesne, Senior

2008-09 National Championship
Kentucky Wins it All
As the final seconds winded down Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson embraced. Despite rumors that head coach Billy Gillispie could be fired at the season's end, the Wildcats were able to tune everything out and win it all. All year UCONN had been the favorite to win the NCAA championship but Kentucky had just beat them by double digits.
The Wildcats entered the tournament as the fifth seed and beat 14th seeded cinderella, Bradley, in the elite eight to move on to the final four. In the biggest basketball game in the state's history, they beat instate rival Louisville by only four points to move onto the national championship game.
In the game itself, both teams struggled shooting the ball. UCONN's star center Hasheem Thabeet only shot 2-12 in the game, Jodie Meeks for Kentucky wasn't much better shooting 4-12. However, Meeks got to the line shooting a perfect 11/11 from the free-throw line. Perry Stevenson stepped up nearly recording a double-double against Thabeet.
A few weeks ago it seemed a sure-fire thing that Billy Gillispie would be out of Kentucky at season's end but now it seems like there would be a riot in Lexington if they did.

Three Players Transfer Out of UC Davis
April 8th, 2009
DAVIS -- Earlier in the year CBS sports reported that their was turmoil in the UC Davis locker room. Today we got to see the finalization of that as three players declared they would be leaving the program. Sophmore's Adam Malik and Mark Payne along with Junior Shane Hanson are the players leaving. Although graduating we also have intel that Michael Boone and Kyle Brucculeri were extremely frustrated with the way they were treated this season.
Due to the roster overhaul from season one of head coach Keon Reid's tenure to season two, many players who were rotation pieces turned to bench warmers. This led to frustrations from this portion of the team that peaked during the team's losing streak in conference play.
It's hard to argue the changes, however, after Coach Reid's results. In season one the Aggies were arguably the worst team in the NCAA going 4-24, this season a dramatic turnaround led them to a 17-12 season. This was only UC Davis's fourth season in the division one ranks and this was the school's first winning season.
Shane Hanson is believed to be accepting an offer from California State University – San Bernardino. A Division II program that went 20-10 last season. Mark Payne and Adam Malik are still weighing options. However, they're expected to also drop down to Division II.
Malik in particular was a promising freshman winning first-team all-Big West. It's rumored head coach Keon Reid fought hard to convince Malik to stick around, allegedly outlining a plan for him to be back in the rotation next year due to players graduating. Malik wasn't having it and still decided to transfer. His scoring ability and athleticism will make him a hot commodity for DII schools interested.

Hopefully you'll be able to bring in some contributors with those transfers' scholarships, and maybe land some transfers of your own. Might be tough to fill the entire roster in just one offseason though.
Awesome to see Oliver get recognized as Big West Player of the Year - well deserved.Comment

Re: A West Coast Story - College Hoops 2k8 Legacy
The biggest task is going to be filling our holes at SG and PF in our starting lineup. This will have to be done through either a transfer or recruit as we don't have a quality player to step up and fill in one of these roles next season. I also need to really fill out my bench as I lost most of my bench.Comment

2008-09 UC Davis Basketball Recruiting
UC Davis Signs Six New Recruits
Donnie Parks 6'6 - Power Forward
Los Angeles, CA - 3 Star - 75 Overall
From the start of his recruiting process, Donnie Parks found a liking to UC Davis head coach Keon Reid. He was Reid's number one target and the two had been in frequent contact. Park decided not to sign during the in-season recruiting window but let it be known he was leaning UC Davis.
On Monday he made it official, inking his deal to come to UC Davis. Parks is undersized at 6'6 but he is tough inside and will fight for rebounds. Parks is still somewhat raw offensively with no clear strengths but he can score at every level.
Niemer Jefferson 6'3 - Shooting Guard
Los Angeles, CA - 3 Star - 73 Overall
Earlier in the year, it seemed like Niemer Jefferson was heading towards Pepperdine. However, he never received an offer from the Waves and UC Davis was quick to swoop in. The Aggies had been recruiting Jefferson all season and offered him a scholarship back in November.
Jefferson will likely be replacing Big West player of the year Vince Oliver. Jefferson brings a different game however, Jefferson is an elite shooter who can hit from anywhere on the floor. However, he does posses sneaky athleticism that allows him to get inside.
Leroy Youmans 6'10 - Center
Berkley, CA - 2 Star - 68 Overall
Leroy Youmans had been sold on UC Davis and head coach Keon Reid since the start. Being the first player to verbally declare his commitment to UC Davis.
Youmans is a glass cleaner and defensive big. He averaged a double-double in high school. His touch around the rim is a problem, however, as he frequently misses what should be easy shots. Youmans should be a nice counter to the Aggies Dedrick Watson who is more of a finesse big.
Raymond Sims 6'3 - Shooting guard
Los Angeles, CA - 2 Star - 63 Overall
Raymond Sims was a late addition to UC Davis's board. Assistant coach Randolph Sorrentine noticed him at a game he was watching.
Sims is ferocious attacking the basket, he uses his speed and ball-handling ability to get by defenders to get baskets inside. However, he lacks a real shot away from the basket and his playmaking ability is average. On defense, he is able to hold his own but shouldn't be counted on to lead a defense.
Eduardo Dux 6'4 - Shooting Guard
Berkley, CA - 2 Star - 54 overall
Eduardo Dux from Berkley was another late addition to the Aggies. As recruiting wrapped up the Aggies looked for shooting to fill out their bench. Dux had shot an impressive percentage from deep in high school. So Keon Reid offered him on a whim without having much knowledge of his ability.
Jeffery Dunn 6'5 - Small Forward
Santa Clara, CA - 2 Star - 56 overall
Jeffery Dunn is seen as a solid athlete and defender. However, the rest of his game leaves much to be desired. Dunn was offered by UC Davis back in March as a project player. It's expected he'll be redshirted his first season as the Aggies develop him further.

Co-sign on Jefferson, that shooting ability is going to be great to lean on when the rest of the offense isn't quite up to par. That's a pretty nice 1-2 pairing with him and Parks.Comment
