Sounds just like an early season, I-don't-know-my-roster-well-yet, CHoops game. Ooof.

From before the game started, UC Davis was a bit off. Dedrick Watson had an issue with his shoes right before tip-off and had to head back to the locker room to swap them out. Causing Leroy Youmans to start the first minute of the game. When the game began UC Davis's play was off as well, Donnie Parks missed an easy layup on the first possession of the game.

^ Yeah I need more context on that paragraph as well.

Bummer of a season-opening loss, but glad to see this back!

So basically the CPU reset my lineups without me realizing and yeah it put Youmans in as the starter since he's rated slightly better than Watson. I tried to come up with a story on the fly as to why he was the starter lol.

Yeah, this felt like an early season trying to figure the team out type loss, with probably some rust on the users's behalf too as I haven't played CH2k8 in a bit.

          Oregon Embarresses UC Davis
          November 12th, 2010

EUGENE -- After an embarrassing loss to Boise State, UC Davis saw their game against Oregon as a chance to rebound and beat a ranked team, something Head Coach Keon Reid has never done. Oregon was coming off a double-digit win against a quality Houston team, which is expected to compete for the Conference-USA title.

The first few minutes, Oregon and UC Davis looked about even. With the two exchanging blows, Niemmer Jefferson hit a three to start the game and give every UC Davis fan hope that they'd be able to pull off the upset. That hope would not last long, however, as Oregon's defense tightened up, their two-three zone keeping UC Davis out of the paint. The shots started to pour in for Oregon as well, with the Junior Shooting guard Valdas Fellows and Freshman Elton Proffitt hitting three straight threes.

When Oregon did miss, their bigs overpowered UC Davis's. Keon Reid tried multiple combinations, going big with Youmans and Dedrick Watson, along with briefly even trying going small, hoping to out-energy Oregon. They even had six-foot-six Donnie Parks at the five. Nothing worked, and the onslaught which had started continued. On offense, UC Davis was not able to get into the paint despite their best efforts. They began relying on the three. With few shooters, however, that led to them mostly turning to Niemer Jefferson, hoping for him to get hot. Unfortunately, he did not, shooting 4-12 from deep for the game, as UC Davis shot 11-28 from three overall.

          Oregon Stats:

          UC Davis Stats:

At the half, with the Ducks up by over twenty points, they brought out their bench. UC Davis was briefly able to generate some offense, mainly through Todd Lowenthal throwing up prayers that went in, and Erick Duggins and Joe Harden making a few mid-range shots. The Aggies managed to cut the lead down to twelve. However, this didn't last long as Oregon's bench shut down UC Davis's offensive surge after calling their only timeout of the entire game.

The surge wasn't over for the Ducks; this time, it just came from their bench. Oregon had four bench players in double digits, more than their starting lineup did. Junior shooting guard Homer Monroe scored 27 points off the bench in just 13 minutes, captivating the entire crowd despite the Ducks already being up by over 30 points. Oregon's bench accounted for 72 of the team's 124 points. On the other side, UC Davis appeared dejected, with almost every player hanging their heads low.

Keon Reid attempted to fire his team up, trying to run the break as much as possible. UC Davis was able to find some offensive success doing this, but their defense was performing worse, as Oregon continued to extend its lead.

As the final seconds ticked down on an even more embarrassing loss than Boise State, UC Davis head coach Keon Reid stared off into the distance, seemingly baffled at his team's performance.

All in all, that's a good Oregon team. What is most concerning are the rebounding and points in the paint numbers. Everything else is decent to understandable IMO.

Yeah, I'm more willing to let the rebounds slide, I feel like their bigs were just that much better than ours. Points in the paint, we got to figure out as our shooting will be basically this all year, we have to figure out a way to beat the 2-3 zone with our limited shooting. Our next game is very winnable and if we lose it'll be time to sound the alarms.

                2010-11 UC Davis Basketball Recruiting
A Tale of Two Point Guards

With Todd Lowenthal graduating this year, UC Davis is looking for a new starting point guard for next year. It could come from within the current roster, but Keon Reid is also looking heavily at two very talented high school seniors.

Pictured Above: Steven Elliot (Left), Jarred Eddins (Right)

Steven Elliot is rumored to be the top target of Head Coach Keon Reid. Elliot is a 6'3 athletic point guard out of Northern California. Keon
Reid has been spotted at several of his games this year, with UC Davis being just a short drive away from Elliot's high school. Elliot averaged 12ppg and 6.5 assists on a talented AAU squad this past season.

Elliot is very raw as a scorer, his three-point shooting is below average and he has shot under 30% on a high volume the past year. Where he shines, however, is his size, defense, and passing IQ. Elliot is able to command an offense and find the open man.

Currently, it's believed that Elliot is slightly leaning towards Saint Mary's College who is also recruiting him hard.

Jarred Eddins, is a top 200 player in the nation and a high three-star. He's an undersized point guard out of Southern California. He is also someone Keon Reid has keyed in on early in the season with UC Davis's recruiting. Eddins is very different than Todd Lowenthal, undersized, Eddins relies on his speed and ball handling to get to his spots.

Eddins averaged 15ppg and 7 assists for the City Lights in his last AAU season. While a better shooter than Steven Elliot, he still left a lot to be desired on that end of the floor. He can use his shiftiness to get inside and score the ball but also is a great passer.

It's rumored that Eddins is leaning heavily towards UC Davis over BYU, who has also been recruiting him most of the year.

Aggies Find their Form, Blowout Montana State
                  November 17th, 2010

DAVIS -- Both Montana State and UC Davis came into tonight's game with a losing record, although with very different expectations. Montana State is coming off a losing season last year and with their entire starting lineup returning, they are looking to turn things around. UC Davis is coming off two consecutive winning seasons and an NCAA tournament appearance. For the first time in his four years coaching at UC Davis, Keon Reid had the opening home game sold out. There was a nervous atmosphere in the room, however, as fans weren't sure what to expect after two straight blowout losses on the road.

Straight out of the gate, the Aggies were firing on all cylinders. Todd Lowenthal, who had been rather quiet in the previous two games, exploded. He scored seven of UC Davis's first ten points and got three steals. UC Davis jumped to a 10-2 lead quickly, but Bobby Howard attempted to fight back for the Bobcats. Howard was finding ways to get open off the ball and score at all three levels, fighting to keep UC Davis from extending the lead.

The Aggies continued to find ways to get to the basket and score. Lowenthal, in particular, did an excellent job finding open Aggies cutting to the basket and connected several times with Dedrick Watson and Donnie Parks inside. Throughout the game, the Aggies dominated the glass, with Dedrick Watson, Donnie Parks, and Leroy Youmans all getting close to ten rebounds. However, they did struggle at the free-throw line, shooting under fifty percent for the game.

                  UC Davis Stats:

                  Montana State Stats:

In the second half, the Aggies continued to extend their lead. Todd Lowenthal's defense was remarkable, as he got several more steals and blocked a three-point shot, effectively limiting Rudolph Brooks to just four points. He also remained steady on offense, attacking the basket and scoring over taller defenders. Jimmie Harris stepped up in the second half as well, scoring twelve of his sixteen points.

Montana State was scoring at a decent rate but could not keep up with UC Davis. Due to the fact that they were struggling to score inside, Montana State began hurling three-point shots, but shooting only 25%.

The final nail in the coffin came when, after Montana State cut the deficit to 15 with five minutes left, UC Davis went on a run led by Lowenthal and Dedrick Watson to extend the lead back to over twenty, finishing off the Bobcats.

Sold out opening game and winning easy despite only taking 7 threes. That's pretty good. Was Lowenthal driving to the hoop? Scoring on the break? Hitting mid ranger jumpers?

Yeah, due to the talent and size mismatch, we were able to get what we wanted in the paint pretty easily leading to the low three-point shot attempts.

Lowenthal was driving to the basket primarily, he had a quicker first step than Montana State's guards and was able to get to the hoop.

Watson Leads UC Davis to win Over Washington
                        December 3rd, 2010

DAVIS -- It isn't often for a school like UC Davis to get the chance to host one like Washington on their home floor. Even though Washington has been struggling to start the year, Aggies fans packed the gym to the brim for the chance to witness their team play a team from a major conference. The Washington Huskies' season has started off on a terrible note. Talented but lacking any sort of chemistry, Washington has lost to several teams they shouldn't have, including a 1-6 Montana team. Meanwhile, after starting 0-2, UC Davis has gone on a four-game winning streak.

Things started off rough for UC Davis. Donnie Parks missed back-to-back easy layups, while on the other end, Washington hit a three-pointer and sophomore shooting guard Darian Scott recorded an and-one, putting the Huskies up by six early. UC Davis regrouped, however, and on the ensuing possession, Todd Lowenthal drove to the hoop, scoring over Husky center Eric Melvin. This ignited the UC Davis crowd, who had been on the edge of their seats since before the tip-off. The Aggies then got a stop and, back on offense, found Dedrick Watson, who pump-faked once and then drove in for a layup.

The Aggies then got into a rhythm, playing tough physical defense, forcing Washington into bad shots. On the other end, they swung the ball around until they found a good look. That good look often came from junior big man Dedrick Watson, who scored sixteen points in the first half. Watson couldn't outmuscle Washington's bigs in the post, so he did most of his work from the face-up position—dribbling, driving, and maneuvering past the Huskies' bigs or hitting mid-range shots. Niemer Jefferson also contributed points, hitting two threes along with scoring a layup off a fast break. UC Davis Washington was struggling to hit shots, with their starters barely shooting above 40 percent, while UC Davis was rolling. Soon, the Aggies had a double-digit lead.

In the last few minutes of the half, Washington began to creep back into the game, going on a twelve-to-two run to close the half. This was a collective effort, but a big three from Senior forward Jarrett Pleiness is what kickstarted it. The Aggies had most of their starters out and Dedrick Watson was visibly tired, slowing down their offense.

                        UC Davis Stats:

                        Washington Stats:

In the second half, the Huskies came out the gate hot and built a eight point lead early. This was led by their power forward Jordi Edelin, who came alive in the second half. Edelin scored twelve of his sixteen points in the half. He also snagged six offensive rebounds, never relenting on the glass. It looked like Washington could've been about to pull away as UC Davis tried to turn to Todd Lowenthal but Lowenthal struggled, not being able to create seperation or find the open man.

Keon Reid called a timeout and put in Raymond Sims, Sims the back up point guard has been very inconsistent in his time at UC Davis but has shown up before in big games. Tonight just like he did last year against Colorado, he showed up big when his number was called. Sims scored twelve of his fourteen points in the final eight minutes of the game. Sims was able to use his quickness to get to where he needed on the floor, driving in for layups and pushing the pace on offense to create fast break opportunities and also contiuing to put the ball in Dedrick Watson's hands. Who continued to find ways to score.

Keon Reid, despite not having his typical lineup, decided to stick with it. It paid off as the Aggies began to cut into the Huskies' lead. However, Edelin continued to score inside, keeping the game a back and forth contest as UC Davis stayed just outside of reclaiming the lead. Finally, with two minutes left, Sims found Niemer Jefferson for an open three, who knocked it down, putting UC Davis ahead. From there, the Aggies didn't look back. They were able to maintain the lead in the final minutes and secure a significant win at home against a major school.

It definitely was a battle, I don't think this was our best win, to that I'd credit the Colorado game last year. Ratings wise Washington is the best team we've ever beaten but they came into this game 2-4 with losses to two 1-win teams from the Big Sky. It's nice to get a win over a school of that level on our home floor regardless of their record though.

                              20010-11 UC Davis Basketball Recruiting
Aggies Sign One Recruit, Lose two Others

The in-season signing window has officially closed and we have a better idea of who will be taking the floor for UC Davis next season as the Aggies added one signee and lost two others.

On the last day of the in-season signing period, Jarred Eddins signed with UC Davis. Reid had been recruiting Eddins since the summer, and Eddins instantly showed interest in UC Davis. Despite being ranked as one of the top 175 players in the nation, Eddins wasn't highly recruited by any school from a major conference. However, BYU did heavily recruit him. This was likely due to his undersized frame at 6'0" and only 165 lbs.

Eddins has an extremely high basketball IQ and is a talented playmaker, averaging seven assists for the last AAU season with the City Lights. As a scorer, Eddins uses his speed and ball handling to get past bigger defenders and reach the basket. As a shooter, he can knock down three-pointers, shooting 35% on the year, but there is still room for improvement.

At UC Davis, with Todd Lowenthal graduating this season, he should be competing to be the starting point guard immediately.

Steven Elliot Signs with Saint Mary's College
                              Steven Elliot 6'3 - Point Guard - Richmond, CA - 3 Star
Keon Reid had been recruiting Steven Elliot hard since his recruitment started. It's rumored that Elliot was even his personal favorite point guard target. Standing at 6'3" and displaying great athleticism, Elliot oozes potential. However, much of his game still needs refinement. He shot 36% from the field and under 30% from beyond the arc during his AAU campaign.

On the first day of the in-season signing period, Elliot announced that he would be signing with Saint Mary's College instead of UC Davis. There are speculations that Elliot's decision could be influenced by the uncertainty surrounding Reid's long-term status at UC Davis. Many believe that Reid may be looking to move to a school in a more prestigious conference if he receives the right offer.
Albert Barnes Signs with Saint Mary's

Also, less had been reported about his recruitment, but Albert Barnes was the top center target of Keon Reid. It's believed Coach Reid is trying to get ahead of Dedrick Watson, who is currently a junior, graduating after next season and find his next center.

Barnes has excellent size and averaged a double-double in high school. However, a few days into the signing period, he signed with Saint Mary's College over UC Davis. This wasn't much of a surprise as it had been known for months that Barnes was leaning towards Saint Mary's.

A major reason for this was probably the fact that Barnes would likely have to redshirt his first season at UC Davis as he waited for his opportunity to open up. With Dedrick Watson as a junior and Leroy Youmans as a sophomore firmly embedded in the rotation.

                                Those major signings are fascinating.

Do you have 2 scholarships remaining? And I like Eddins, great to have him replace Lowenthal.
