I'll take a look at the options, but I think odds are I'll be back at UC Davis. We will be returning basically our entire roster next year and the coaching market looks like it will be weak.

      2009-10 NCAA Tournament

      NCAA Tournament Seeds Announced

It's March and the madness is just a few days away. The conference tournaments are finished and now it's time for everyone to start working on their bracket.s

The major story was the Arkansas Razorbacks. Who were given a number one seed despite being ranked 13th in the final AP poll. However, the selection committee was impressed by the Razorback's conference tournament win. Many fans were puzzled by this decision online, claiming that Gonzaga or Tennessee should've been awarded the final number one seed.

The other number-one seeds went out to Duke, USC, and Louisville. These were no surprise and went chalk with the AP poll. Duke has been the number-one team in the nation for the entire season. Led by Jon Scheyer the Blue Devils are the favorite to win the championship.

One of the biggest stories this season, Southern Miss was awarded a three-seed and will play East Tennessee State. Southern Miss popped up out of nowhere this year and won several games against ranked times. Finishing with their best-ever ranking at 10.

Two programs that had just recently moved up to division one, made the tournament this season. Winston Salem State won the MEAC tournament and will match up against Purdue as a 15 seed. While UC Davis will rematch James Harden and Arizona State as a 9th seed.

As always, the bubble teams were another source of debate online. Syracuse, Washington, and NC State snuck their way in despite having twelve losses. While Temple and Dayton out of the A-10 each finished with nine losses and were left out.

Great win - it's hard to come back from down 6 in just 2 minutes. That round 1 matchup is a really rough one, but glad you are in the tournament.

Congrats on the crazy finish to and punching your ticket. You're reward: James Harden in the 1st round! Best of luck and here's to hoping the Aggies can play a clean game and give themselves a shot at the upset.

I really thought it was going to be another year we missed the tournament. I started mentally prepping for how I wanna do the NIT tournament for the dynasty. Coming back the last two minutes, it was one of those times where video games get me amped in real life. To anyone watching I would've looked like a huge dork.

I like the challenge of going up against Harden, should make for an interesting game. He made quick work of us earlier in the year when we played them. But I think I got a few new ideas to try and slow him down.

Keon Reid Speaks Before Game with Arizona State

DAVIDSON, NC - Thursday night, UC Davis head coach Keon Reid spoke with the media the day before their game against Arizona State.

Coach, how do you feel about making your first NCAA tournament appearance?

"It's exciting, it's something every coach dreams of. When I took over at UC Davis, I knew this is where I wanted us to be. It's been a long journey these three years and I thank all the players that came along on the way. That first season, when we only won four games, it didn't look great but those were the building blocks to where we are now."

For your players, this is their first appearance in the tournament as well, how do you calm their nerves?

"I've told my players all week and I'll tell them again tomorrow. Just focus on playing your game, don't let the outside factors get into your head. Of course, this has been a special week for all of us and we want them to soak it all in. But once we get on the court, we all are going to have to lock in and do our jobs."

What are your thoughts on Arizona State?

I have a lot of respect for them, I have to, they kicked our butts earlier in the year. Herb Sendek has those boys well-coached. They take care of the ball and don't get into foul trouble. Their offense is about as dangerous as any team in the country. They also play in one of the toughest conferences in the country so they're battle tested.

What did you take from that first game against Arizona State?

"We of course have been heavily watching the film from that game. That day, they just got whatever they wanted offensively. Harden and Polk were hitting threes early which allowed them to start dumping it inside as we overcompensated to chase them off the three-point line. This may sound elementary but we're going to have to keep their shooters from getting hot while also still protecting the paint."

What's your philosophy going into a game where you are the heavy underdog?

"Well as the cliche goes, there's a reason games are played and not just decided on paper. Just because the media thinks we're going to lose doesn't mean we do. There's going to be no gimmicks, we're just going to play our game the way we do and hope to come out with a win."

Theres rumors circulating that you likely will draw the interest of several teams this off-season who will be interested in hiring you to be their coach. What are your thoughts on this?

"I'm flattered of course if teams are interested in me, it's always good to be wanted as a coach. But my focus right now is on UC Davis and our game against Arizona State tomorrow. I believe we have a good young team that can win for years to come here."

                Team Stats:Team Stats
                Arizona State Dominates UC Davis
                March 19th, 2010

DAVIDSON -- Earlier in the year, UC Davis and Arizona State matched up in non-conference play. The Sun Devils made quick work of the Aggies. This time both teams matched up with their seasons on the line. UC Davis playing in their first-ever NCAA tournament. While Arizona State, was returning a team that nearly made the sweet sixteen last year.

Things didn't start off great for UC Davis, who turned the ball over on their first possession. This was a sign of things to come, as Arizona State built up an early double-digit lead in the first few minutes. The Sun Devils were looking to Senior forward Christian Polk early. Polk was started the game hot from deep, hitting three, threes in the first few minutes of the game.

On the other end of the court, Arizona state was playing tough defense. Making it difficult for UC Davis to find a good shot. The Aggies often had to use nearly the entire shot clock just to find a look. Sometimes they couldn't find their shot, turnover issues were a problem for UC Davis throughout the first half. Struggling with the physical man-to-man defense played by Arizona State. Three players in the Aggies starting lineup had three turnovers.

Halfway through the first Arizona State was up, sixteen. Arizona State was not just putting the ball in the basket and playing tough defense. They were also dominating the glass when they did miss. The Sun Devils had thirteen offensive rebounds to UC Davis's three. Much of that was a team effort, with Arizona State's leading rebounder Kraidon Woods not having a huge game with seven rebounds.

                UC Davis Stats:

                Arizona State:

In the second half, UC Davis went to the one thing that was working for them, Niemer Jefferson. Jefferson hit six threes in the game, four of them coming in the second half. Jefferson's hot shooting was able to help cut down a nineteen-point Arizona State lead to eleven. That's when James Harden got going offensively. Harden went on an eight-point run by himself, hitting two threes and then driving past Jefferson for an easy layup. Stopping any chance for the Aggies to get back in the game.

Off the bench, sophomore guard Larry Coffee keeps things steady as Arizona State pulled out their starters. Coffee had twelve of his sixteen points in the second half. UC Davis continued to try to fight back, Dedrick Watson was able to start to get going against the Arizona State bench. But Coffee would keep the Aggies at bay. With two minutes left, Arizona State had already won. UC Davis, a team that usually has endless energy looked solemn. Heads head low on the bench, as they watched their season end.

Hard not to be happy with how the season ultimately ended up! You mentioned in a previous post about the lack of juice in the coaching carousel this time around, so with the guys coming back and having hit that goal of making the NCAA Tournament, a win or two in the Big Dance next year could set the stage for either a major career move or the start of something special and sustained at UC Davis.

Yeah, I expected the loss, but hoped we would be able to keep it closer than it was. Our entire core is returning next year, so hopefully, this is something we can build on next year.

Yeah, I wish we had the other J.Harden but ours isn't bad. He's a nice player to have off the bench and plays multiple positons well. Jefferson was great, I'm excited to see how he develops. If his shooting improves, he'll be a real weapon next year.

Definitely happy with this season, it's something we can build on that should lead for a great year four and potentially year five. I'm definitely excited at the high likelihood of me running it back with UC Davis. Next year's team should only be better with everyone returning and the addition of a solid transfer shooting guard.

                          2009-10 National Championship

                          Michigan State National Champions

As the confetti reigned down, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo embraced with his Senior Small forward Raymar Morgan. The two had been through a lot over Raymar's four years at Michigan State and tonight it ended with a title.

The Spartans entered the tournament as a three-seed, on their way to a national championship they had to beat two-seeded Purdue and number one-seeded USC. Beating the Trojans at the very last second with a mid-range jumper to take the lead by Raymar Morgan. In the final four, they dominated six-seeded Texas Tech to face off against Tennessee in the championship game.

The game itself was a gutsy high-scoring affair, at the half it was tied 40-40. Tennessee's Senior bigs Duke Crews and Way Chism were having whatever they wanted inside. But Kalin Lucas, Raymar Morgan and Durrell Summers all kept Michigan State in the game. With five minutes left in the second half, the Spartans began to pull ahead. Led by two Durrell Summers three-pointers.

This was Tom Izzo's second NCAA title at Michigan State, his first in a decade. Four of Michigan State's five starters will be returning next year, so the Spartans will be in a prime position to repeat. For tonight, however, they and their fans will be celebrating.
