      2009-10 UC Davis Basketball Recruiting
Aggies Waiting for to Make Offers

We're in January and after signing Erick Duggins, the Aggies have four open scholarships. Two of them have been offered but two sit unused.

Edwin Bakinde Leaning Towards UC Davis
Edwin Bakinde 6'8 - Small Forward - Los Angeles, CA - 2 Star

Edwin Bakinde has been in contact with the Aggies since the Summer and is one of two players offered by them. Keon Reid has been interested in his ability as a possible stretch four. The 6'8 small forward is a talented rebounder and shooter.

Recently he visited UC Davis to watch their win over CS Fullerton. There he told reporters with 24/7 sports UC Davis is currently number one on his list.

He also has an offer from Pepperdine.

      Russ Taybron visiting Arizona State
Russ Tayborn 6'8 - Small Forward - Rancho Cucamonga, CA - 2 Star

Russ Tayborn is another versatile wing the Aggies are interested in. He is the other current scholarship offer UC Davis has out. However, Taybron is getting significant interest from Arizona State and he is visiting there this week.

Currently, Tayborn is without an offer from the Sun Devils but they have been in close contact with him.

He also has interest from UTEP, San Diego, and CS Bakersfield.

William Duffy Verbally Commits to Portland State
      Gilbert Toussaint 6'6 - Power Forward - Springfield, OR - 2 Star

William Duffy had been getting in contact with UC Davis assistant Randolph Sorrentine. Duffy is considered a great shooter and was looked at as an option to replace Dominic Calegari as a stretch forward off the bench next year.

However, today he announce he would be signing with Portland State in the Spring.

      National Recruiting News:

      - Harrison Barnes leaning toward Louisville
      - Shabazz Napier split between Providence and the University of Rhode Island.

      - Doug McDermott signs with Ole Miss
      - Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters sign with UCONN.
      - Tristan Thompson and Jared Sullinger going to La Salle.
      - Victor Oladipo heading to Chapel Hill.
      - Tobias Harris commits to Georgetown.
      - Joe Harris signs with Gonzaga.

        Aggies Escape in Overtime
        January 21rst, 2010

IRVINE -- UC Davis and UC Irvine both have two young exciting rosters. The Anteaters struggled early in the season but have won their last two conference games. They are led by sophomore forward Delvon Coggins who is one of the best players in the entire conference.

From the start this was a fast-paced game, both teams were looking to score early and not playing much defense. The Aggies continued with their balanced attack seen in recent weeks. In contrast, the Anteaters looked toward their best players. Senior point guard Michael Hunter was red hot for UC Irvine, scoring fifteen in the first half.

UC Davis put in Senior, Dominic Calegari midway through the first half. Calegari has always been a rotational player for the Aggies playing 6-8 minutes a night only averaging 2ppg for his career. Tonight Calegari played game of his life, however. He hit a three his first time touching the ball then proceeded to score from mid-range and in the paint the next few minutes. Racking up 12 of his 19 total points in just a few minutes.

This came at a good time as on the other side Derrick Strings was countering with a scoring burst of his own. He knocked down three, three-pointers in the half.

        UC Davis Stats:

        UC Irvine Stats:

In the second half, both teams clamped up a bit more. The Anteaters began covering the three-point line and forcing the Aggies offense into the paint. This proved effective as UC Davis went several long stretches without scoring. Todd Lowenthal did a good job of dicing through the tight UC Irvine defense, however. He got to the lane when he could and found open Aggies when he couldn't. He was able to get the second double-double of his career.

In the final two minutes of the game, UC Davis was up six but struggling to score. Delvon Coggins hit a big three for Irvine, then on the ensuing possession forced a miss from Jimmie Harris. Michael Hunter hit a three on the other end tying the game up. With twenty-four seconds left, Todd Lowenthal drove to the basket to put the Aggies up two but missed. UC Davis quickly recovered and played great defense forcing a bad shot up from Irvine at the buzzer.

In overtime, UC Davis quickly grabbed control. Dedrick Watson stepped up in a big way scoring six points in overtime. Knocking down several mid-range jumpers over Irvine defenders. UC Irvine didn't quit but were never able to cut into the Aggies lead.

Nice win and 14-3 is a great start. What's your conference record? Michael Hunter was very efficient and probably should have tried to create more shots for UC Irvine.

Six players in double figures is no easy feat. Great record.

We're 6-0, 4-0 in games I've played, and 2-0 in simmed games. Yeah they kept feeding Coggins from deep which he is a great shooter but it wasn't falling for him.

Appreciate it, yeah it's been fun to play with such a team approach to games this season.

We're almost through January and nearly halfway through conference play. Things are pretty crowded at the top with four closers around a game apart from each other. Overall the conference is young with six of the nine teams featuring starting lineups comprised of mostly underclassmen.

UC Davis currently sits clearly at the top, they are ranked in the Mid-Major top 25 and are on a nine-game win streak. They play a high-scoring brand of team basketball. With almost all of their starting averaging double digits. They are currently in the top 30 in the country in offensive efficiency. Their defense is lacking, however.

Many Pacific fans are daring to ask the question, could they be living up to their talent level this year? The Tigers are having their best start to conference play in recent years. They aren't the best offensive or defensive team but they play good enough to win games. Their two losses come to UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara. Their last three wins have all been by double digits.

UC Santa Barbara had a bit of a slower start to conference play than they would have hoped, losing to UC Davis and CS Northridge but since have won their last three games. Including a twenty-point victory over Pacific.

The middle of the conference is a battle between Cal Poly and UC Irvine who are both 4-3. For Cal Poly this is a bit of a disappointment as with one of the more talented backcourts in the league many expected them to be up towards the top of it. UC Irvine however has to be pleased with their record, it's a clear improvement from last season and their roster featuring four sophomores in the starting lineup continues to grow.

CS Fullerton has had an incredibly disappointing start to conference play. Last year they were dominant winning the regular season conference title. They started this year off well too, going 6-4 in out of conference play. All six of their losses have been by double digits and their one win was a one-point victory over CS Northridge. Despite being a solid defense team they have one of the worst offenses in the entirety of the NCAA ranking 307 in efficiency.

                  Cal Poly Dominates UC Davis
                  January 30th, 2010

SAN LUIS -- Last year when UC Davis traveled to San Luis to play Cal Poly they got blown out in a 20+ point loss. It came at a particularly frustrating stretch of play as UC Davis couldn't seem to buy a conference win. The Aggies are different this year, they've been undefeated in conference play this year and red hot.

The Aggies didn't seem right from the tip, Todd Lowenthal missed a wide-open layup and Dedrick Watson picked up a foul on the other end. The Aggies were missing shots they'd usually make and having trouble just keeping ahold of the ball. Cal Poly was steady, attacking the basket and finding open shooters.

Cal Poly's Senior point guard Rick Higgins was highlighted as a player to watch before the game, well he didn't disappoint. Higgins dominated whoever guarded him, getting to the basket whenever he wanted along with hitting two threes. He would score 24 points in just fourteen minutes.

                  UC Davis Stats:

                  Cal Poly Stats:

The Aggie's struggles continued Dedrick Watson got himself into foul trouble forcing Leroy Youmans to play most of the half at the center. Youmans quickly got gassed and was giving up easy baskets. UC Davis gave up nearly 60pts in the first half, close to the worst showing as a team under Coach Reid's tenure.

Changing baskets didn't change much, the Aggies came out of the half still stumbling. They turned the ball over four straight times meanwhile Cal Poly played smart high IQ basketball. UC Davis committed twelve more turnovers compared to Cal Poly.

The Mustangs bench is what really carried them in this one, they had three players in double digits off the bench. Charles Anderson seemed to be able to find a bucket whenever he wanted. While Trace Karangwa's hot shooting shut down any Aggie runs.

With eight minutes left, Keon Reid had had enough, he called off his dogs putting in the bench. One of the few highlights was walk-on Shawn Daniel, Daniel had the highest scoring game of his career getting seven points in the final minutes.

Tough loss, seemed like you just didn't have someone there to take over for you. Pretty balanced scoring attack, which isn't bad, but when the other team is erupting I feel like you need that guy who can put up some fireworks of their own. What's the plan for the bounceback?

We definitely need to find our go-to scorer, unfortunately, last year we had a goto scorer in Vince Oliver but lacked the talent around him, this year we have the talent but no goto scorer. I'm going to keep things the way they are, we were on a 9 game winning streak so I feel there's no need to panic after one loss.

Chaos up and Down the Polls

If you compared the media poll at the start of last month to today's you'd be looking at two radically different lists. Gonzaga has shot up the polls all the way to the number three spot. While the defending champs Kentucky have fallen from number three to outside of the top ten. Even Duke who was undefeated at the start of January now holds two losses.

We'll start with Gonzaga who as I said before has rocketed up the polls. The Zags are currently on one of the biggest win streaks in college basketball at thirteen. They've beaten almost all their recent opponents by double digits.

Tennessee has moved back into the top five. This comes after beating Kentucky at home last week. Meanwhile, Kentucky continues to slide. They've lost three of their last four games. Only one of which was to a ranked opponent. They've struggled defensively in these games giving up an average of 82 points.

The Florida Gators who we have been touting as one of the teams to watch nationally, fell from number two down to number nine. They lost two straight games last week, on the road at Ole Miss and home versus Georgia. Both of these teams are rather mediocre for a team like Florida so these losses were stunners.

Clemson Tigers have continued their rise up the polls, usually ridiculed as a "football" school the Tigers have gone 8-2 in their last ten games. Including 5-2 in the ACC. They beat Kentucky earlier in the year and have a talented roster led by Senior forward Trevor Booker.

Southern Miss have run into a little trouble, the Golden Eagles are 6-1 in conference play including a recent win over Memphis. However, last week they lost to Houston at home.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers entered the top 25 this week. Nebraska hasn't been in the NCAA tournament in 11 years so fans are static with their recent success. Nebraska is led by Senior's Sek Henry and Ryan Anderson. Anderson not to be confused with Cal's Ryan Anderson is a talented shooter who also plays solid defense.

In the Mid-Major rankings after some recent defeats, Bucknell and UALR have fallen out of the top 10. UC Davis has entered the top 10, the Aggies are 9-1 in their last ten games. After some questions earlier in the year VCU has been hot lately, winning nine of their last ten also. Meanwhile, Gonzaga holds well above everyone else at the top.

Despite the loss, seems like this year is shaping up to be a special one for UC Davis! That kind of scoring balance has to be nice, though as you mentioned it'd be good to find a real go-to guy especially come tournament time when you'll need that the most.

Also love the inclusion of real-life recruits - nice to see the alternate universe where guys like Jared Sullinger and Tristan Thompson commit to La Salle!

56-spot in one half is rough, reminds me of my current defense with my 68 overall Texas A&M CC team I'm running with in my legacy . Defense can be tough in this game when the CPU gets rolling.

It definitely could be a special year as UC Davis could take their first ever NCAA tourney trip. Although we definitely don't have the firepower to compete with the top teams, just making the tournament would be special.

I'm excited to see how the real-life players do, it's definitely not perfect atm and I'll need to keep tweaking it but seeing La Salle get two big-name players or Kyrie + Waiters teaming up in college will be fun.

I find defending the three when the CPU is hot to be incredibly frustrating, no matter what I do one of my defenders will sag off a shooter at a bad time.

Guachos hot Shooting Takes Them Past Aggies
                                February 4th, 2010

SANTA BARBARA -- UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara are two of the top teams in the Big West. Earlier in the year, the Aggies beat the Gauchos by thirteen, but Santa Barbara has been hot lately particularly from deep.

Early into the game, UC Davis was struggling to contain UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos' senior point guard James Powell was essentially able to do whatever he wanted. Hitting shots from all over the and finding teammates when he couldn't get a shot off. On the other end, UC Davis was really struggling to find someone to goto on offense.

The Aggie's back-up guard freshman Raymond Sims tweaked his ankle two minutes into stepping on the floor. This created a major issue as UC Davis has essentially no guard depth and Sims plays almost all the guard minutes when one of the starters are taking a break. Coach Reid adjusted his lineups to have Jimmie Harris playing a lot of the extra guard minutes and Joe Harden filling in for Harris at the three spot.

One bright spot for the Aggies was Donnie Parks who was hitting shots from mid-range and getting to the basket. The freshman power forward was who UC Davis started to go to in a pinch late in the first half.

                                UC Davis Stats:

                                UC Santa Barbara Stats:

In the second half, coach Reid hoped to slow down the Gaucho's offense and also get more consistent scoring from his team. One of those things happened. UC Davis started to find more of a rhythm where their piecemeal lineup but the Gauchos continued to be hot. Particularly from deep.

Routinely UC Davis would get some momentum and start to cut into UC Santa Barbara's lead. Then someone from the Gauchos would hit a big three. Freshman small forward Damir Lang had ten points in the first half, however, in the second half he'd explode for sixteen including two threes.

With two minutes left in the game UC Davis was able to cut the Santa Barbara lead down to two, but Justin Joyner the Gaucho's sixth-man hit a huge corner three. Then on the next possession, he did it again extending the lead and providing the knockout punch to UC Davis's hopes of winning.
