Man, you seem to get the wildest swings in games. I've had some great games, but never a turnaround as good as that (or a blown lead as good as that).

Tovarich: That was a lot less dramatic than the last one, for which my heart doctor is grateful. It wasn't perfect, but we were good enough.

Reporter: The bench played almost as many minutes as the starters. Is that the plan?

Tovarich: I'm not sure what the plan is yet. We're still trying to get some of the freshmen going. Pippen is supposed to be our best 3-point shooter and he's 0-4. Farley is supposed to be a good 3-point shooter, and he's 1-6. I know Spears and Atkinson aren't going to be happy on the bench and I don't want to them to leave, so I'm going to get them minutes. That's part of it.

Reporter: Is is true you have 15 PG's on your recruiting board?

Tovarich: Yes. That's 100% what our 1 scholarship is for, and I don't know how realistic it is we'll sign someone in season but I'd like to try. Then we can just go for some backup plans if people leave.

Reporter: What do you think you did better than the first game?

Tovarich: I'd say defense, but I'm not sure we were bad at it the last game. They just shot like crazy. We rarely if ever change anything. We blocked well early when they went into the lane. Grady's rebounding was better. It's not hard to improve on a total of one rebound, but at least he did. Whatever we did do better was probably more a reflection of the opponent than us. We'll probably get by Jax State with a performance like this but not Iowa.

I feel like I get a lot of games where things totally change at halftime. 3-point shooter is either really good or bad, then it's opposite in the second half. The refs often seem totally different. Rebounding is brutal one half, and then merely bad the next, etc. Though in this one, Hawaii was killing me to start the second half. I have no idea why they suddenly went like 2/15 in the middle of the half. It wasn't from me changing anything.

Tangent, but related to your quest for increasing difficulty.

One thing I've started doing (that has really helped) to make opponents play to their strengths.
          1. Before games I scout their team and then go in and edit the CPU sliders for close, mid, 3 point, and drive tendencies. So if they have great 3 pt shooters, I up that. If they have great bigs, I go with close shots. If they have terrible 3pt shooters I drop that tendency to 20.
          2. I've create 5 playbooks, 1 for each position. I load a playbook up for the best position on their team and assign that to them pre-game.

Not sure how much it makes it harder, but it has made each game feel even more difference from the previous ones.

Tovarich: There was a real mix of good and bad there. Allowing 14 offensive rebounds is pitiful. We shot horribly in the second half. Luckily they cooled off from 3 as well, though they're 4/14 wasn't as bad as our 0/5. Some of the guys previously struggling showed some promise. Farley and Pippen each hit a couple 3's. So, a mix as usual. It's not a performance I expect would beat Iowa. Maybe something will magically improve.

Reporter: They abandoned their full court press down 31-17. Were they better off without it?

Tovarich: Wilkins and Carbaugh both were doing a good job against that. The offenses in general were on fire in the first half. Then we all cooled off at halftime. Since we have a FR PG, and then our backup PG is a FR SG, I am surprised more teams haven't been doing this so far. They'll probably turn it over some, though they're doing a good job with it so far. 14 turnovers in 3 games is great considering the youth of the ballhandlers. They're valuing the ball like veterans. But it's still an obvious strategy I expect more people will use.

Reporter: Is it an advantage or disadvantage to be playing Iowa with only one game played so far?

Tovarich: I imagine they've been stewing for 13 days about losing their opener to the Citadel. There's not much info to go off. They're young and probably just had a bad game, and you assume they'll be a lot better.

Reporter: How bad was the recruiting board cut this week?

Tovarich: Well, we know we were reaching a bit with a couple 5* PG's, but apparently both of them are going to Grand Canyon, which is shocking. So we've lost 11 of our 15 guys already who have offers from people obviously well ahead of us. I just need one though, so hopefully it's not all lost.

I feel like I'd be giving myself an advantage by dictating their strategy to them and then being able to play knowing what it is.

It felt like less of an advantage than having 60 overall three point shooters go 2-26 from three lol. Next time I played that team, they actually fed the ball to their post players and made shots.

Tovarich: I'd like to take some credit for that, but I think Iowa just had a rough day. They threw the ball to us a lot. They didn't really own the boards like most teams do against us. Neither team shot well from outside, but we had our way down low.

Reporter: What do you expect against Villanova tomorrow?

Tovarich: That will surely be much tougher. They're in the top 10 and we'll need a great performance.

Reporter: Still no chance of Herman or Stivers playing in a blowout?

Tovarich: No. It'd be better for everyone if they continue their careers elsewhere. We have to do better scouting all our recruits. I didn't cut Herman because he seemed close to transferring last year. I'm confident he will this year. Stivers, maybe I should've cut. Whatever skills they have just don't equate to scoring, which is what I need.

Reporter: Why do you think all the bigs were great and everyone else struggled?

Tovarich: Sometimes those things are written in the stars before the game starts it seems. And we have a lot of wide open sky up here with little pollution and we can see a lot of extra stars? LOL I don't know. Some games just go that way.

Tovarich: I think I know how Hawaii felt in the middle of the 2nd half against us.

Reporter: You scored with 6:54 to go to go up 12. Did you think about slowing it down right then?

Tovarich: If I knew a 22-3 run was coming, then yeah, I'd have done that.

Reporter: What do you think you could have done differently in that stretch?

Tovarich: Nothing. No one could make a shot. It didn't matter where it was from, who took it. Grady suddenly missed 4 in a row, Atkinson missed 4 in a row. No one could hit a 3 like last game. If not for that Hawaii game, I'd say it was the coldest stretch of 6 minutes I've ever seen. We might have stayed in it with some rebounds. But they got constant putbacks. We had nothing for them down low. We have to overcome that elsewhere. We did get all those turnovers in the first half, but that stopped in the second.

Reporter: What did you think of the refs?

Tovarich: They had a stranger streak than we did. The first 6 fouls of the game were on us. Then I think the next 7 on them. Then the last 4 on us. Only they know.

Reporter: Farley is average 1.8 ppg. Are you considering moving him to the bench for better 3-point shooting?

Tovarich: I may, but not yet. Spears is struggling too. Pippen isn't lighting it up. Luz has been ok. That's a part of the offense we need more from. 9/38 these last three isn't going to get it done against our better competition. The big guys have been carrying us, but they fell apart in the last 7 minutes too and the guards have to be better. If we struggle to shoot 3's against Utah too and Farley doesn't have a better game, Spears may get put back in for sure.

Reporter: Was their defense a cause of the poor shooting?

Tovarich: 2/12 from the front court is a small sample size. They were tight in man though and sped us up with the halfcourt trap. But it was elite competition. We have to do better.

Tovarich: We could've folded down 33-15 in the first half. They were shooting like crazy. We were bricking everything. It'd have been easy to get down and get blown out. They clawed their way back in.

                      Reporter: What changed?

Tovarich: Mostly Utah turning the ball over. Crazy stretch there to score 19 in a row and take the lead by 1, only for them to break their 7 minute scoreless drought at the buzzer and take it back by 1. They should've kept shooting 3's. They were 5/6 at the half. We were 2/8.

Reporter: How about the ending of regulation?

Tovarich: Yeah, we're down 4. We get an and-1. They're in such a hurry to inbound the ball so fast, our FT shooter who's still standing at the FT line steals it and we pull the ball out. I was hoping we had time to hold it to the end, but we didn't. We get a big layup with 29 seconds to go up 1. They seemingly are going to hold for the last shot. Then Farmer hits a 3 with 7 seconds left, because of course he did. He was killing us. Ridiculous game by him. So we're back down 2. They are apparently busy celebrating because Grady is running behind the entire defense, so we inbound it, throw it down to him. They catch up and foul him with 4 seconds left to avoid giving him the easy tying basket. Based on his previous FT shooting, I wasn't optimistic, but he nailed it. They had time for 3 passes somehow and were going to throw the ball down into the paint, but we managed to deflect it up in the air and they got unlucky to be called for an over and back because the PG who went back for it was heading the wrong way. So we have .9 to go for a shot. I called a TO to see who we should have take the 3. I went with Spears, even though he was 1/4. He bricked it. Oh well. OT we dominate. We were 6/9 and they were 3/9. We hit out FT's. We didn't do much of anything wrong in OT except shoot too fast once or twice. Wild game.

Reporter: Did Farley do enough to keep his starting spot?

Tovarich: Yeah. That's the kind of game he needed. I wouldn't have minded if he didn't have that productive of a game. I'd have settled for just the indication that he's capable of that. I almost gave him the shot at the buzzer because of it. Maybe I should have, but it worked out.

Reporter: How did you feel about the rebounding?

Tovarich: Compared to last game's -22, this was awesome. They're not the tallest team you've ever seen and their bigs are young like ours.

Reporter: What did you think of the perimiter defense?

Tovarich: I told everyone to get tight on the shooters. They were destroying us. If they shot a 3 on every possession or just kept below average care of the ball, they win. It's rare I double team anyone, but especially crazy rare to do it to someone on the perimeter but I absolutely could not stand to watch him shoot anymore.

Reporter: How do you sum up the tournament?

Tovarich: I'll take 2-1 against 3 power opponents for sure. We were wildly inconsistent, and I knew we would be. We're very young. But I think of inconsistency as thinking we'll have good games and bad games. We really run the gamut in every game. It's not going to be good for my life span at this rate.

Tovarich: We did a good job making that look lopsided those last 5 minutes after we only lead 65-62. We did a good job making their center looks like Wilt Chamberlain even though he only averages 6 points and 6 boards a game.

Reporter: Do you think you shot enough 3's?

Tovarich: That zone was so inviting. Also Grady was in freshman mode, having some kind of fight with the rim and the rim kept winning. I couldn't watch any more of that. Luckily we have depth. We shot 3's pretty well in spurts after going on a long hiatus for the middle half of the game.

Reporter: Why didn't you stick to your usual hockey subs?

Tovarich: Wilkins was getting a little tired against the press. Luz got a little out of whack when Pippen missed the second FT and couldn't be subbed out. It's all good.

Reporter: What do you need to improve to beat South Carolina?

Tovarich: -12 in rebounding to that team is obviously pitiful and -12 against South Carolina would probably be an improvement. I doubt we'll get pressed most of the game or see an exclusive zone defense, so I wouldn't draw much of anything from this as it relates to that game. We saw 3 power teams in our tournament, so we won't be in awe.

Tovarich: We had a lot to overcome tonight, and we couldn't do it. I think 6 of their FT's were the intentional variety, but still 19-10 FT's for them before that. We missed 5 or 6 point blank finger rolls that landed on the front of the rim and fell off. 7 turnovers is high for us. Terrible shooting by most people. -17 rebounding was never going to be good enough. Still, somehow we were in it at the end, but any time we had to do something, get a rebound, make a layup, force a miss, we didn't do it.

Reporter: Did you feel you were the better team in the game?

Tovarich: Neither team was good. We were both a fairly even level of bad. We're young. Bad road games are going to happen. Too many people went missing in the scoring column.

Reporter: Is the rebounding a youth problem?

Tovarich: Atkinson started the same way Grady is, 4.9 rpg. He's a little shorter. I'd love to have some rebounding skill. Atkinson's improvement the following year was fairly minimal. It's tough to get elite big guys at a small school, especially up here. I expect it's a problem we just have to overcome elsewhere, perpetually.

Reporter: Is Spears struggling from a lack of confidence?

Tovarich: His numbers, despite that 0/5 are still right about where they would be percentage-wise. He just has fewer minutes to make an impact. I'm not against starting him. Farley's inconsistent too, but improving the last 3 games. This is why I deferred all these kinds of opponents to later in the season last year. The team needs time to grow. Spears and Atkinson will get some pep talks. I don't want them leaving.

Tovarich: Good rebound, from the loss and just plain good rebounding. +11 might be a record. It'd be nice if they'd just play like that without having to lose first to get their attention. I assume Bill & Mary just had a bad night.

Reporter: Is 43 the magic number that get Herman and Stivers in a game?

                            Tovarich: It's somewhere around there.

Reporter: Was Grady only in the game at the end to get him a double-double?

Tovarich: Yes, and he was lucky to grab that 10th board literally just a couple tenths before the game ended. All the big guys had good stats tonight.

Reporter: The in-season recruiting windows is open. Are you going to get your lone recruit signed?

Tovarich: No. We're in good shape on a couple PG's. I haven't settled on which I'd like yet. We're not going to get them in now either way though. Then soon we'll start looking for backup plans for potential transfers like Herman and Stivers.

Tovarich: That last game was too easy, so we decided to give Belmont a 19-4 head start and see if we could make it more interesting.

                                Reporter: What changed at 19-4?

Tovarich: I subbed the bench in. They went on a great comeback. We got back to 25-24. Then they called a timeout and went on another mini-run. Then we got it back down to 1, then they called a timeout and went on another mini-run. I think our opponents shoot 100% out of a timeout.

Reporter: How about the strategy on Collum?

Tovarich: Haha. That guy had 16 points in the first 4 minutes. I was going to lose my ever loving mind if I had to watch him shoot any more. We didn't quite go Loyola against Steph Curry mode, but we doubled him every time he touched the ball. I didn't even care that the Fleming guy was bombing 3's on us too. At least it was someone else. I've never doubled anyone on the perimeter for 24 minutes but jeez. He'd have gone for 50 I think. He still managed to get off more shots than I care for. There was no threat of the big guys though. They seemed totally disinterested in shooting. 1 shot by the C in 17 minutes? I've never seen that. The PF was 3-10, so they had the right strategy jacking 33 3's.

Reporter: Are you still sold on Farley as a starter over Spears?

Tovarich: Not at all. I think about that change most games. Farley's had a few promising games. Spears has had some clunkers. But just like last year, I see a FR with more overall talent and think he should be starting, but Spears' shooting is certainly superior. Pippen is supposed to be our best 3-point shooter and he's not lighting it up either. I know we're young and our team unity is bad, so Spears would help with that too. I'm not far from pulling the trigger on that. I'll spend a lot of the flight home pondering that.

Reporter: Western Michigan and Loyola are struggling. Should those be wins?

Tovarich: The other thing I'll be pondering on our flight home is why Western Michigan is 6-5 but an RPI of 11. Their schedule must be crazy. I know someone poached their coach, so there's some adjustment there. I'll have to take a look at what's going on with them.
