    2006-2007 Starting Lineup
    Volume 1, Issue 1

Jawan Carter looks to lead the young
backcourt for St. Joseph's this season

The 2006-2007 edition of the St. Joseph's Hawks includes youngster after youngster in the backcourt and talent after talent on the block. Four freshman frequent the regular guard rotation for Coach Phil Martelli, and the 52 year old looks forward to watching them work. Despite the excitement over the backcourt, it is the froncourt that will score the majority of the points this season. A three headed monster caps off the starting lineup, including two juniors and a sophomore. Leadership and experience may prove to be an issue for these Hawks, but over time, they expect to be competitive. The '06-'07 squad is as follows:

    Starting Lineup

    G - Darrin Govens, Freshman
    G - Jawan Carter, Freshman
    F - Pat Calathes, Junior
    F - Rob Ferguson, Junior
    F - Ahmad Nivins, Sophomore

    Bench

    C - Artur Surov, Senior
    G - D.J. Rivera, Freshman
    G - Garrett Williamson, Freshman
    G - Edwin Lashley, Sophomore
    F - Alvin Mofunaya, Sophomore
    F - Arvydas Lidzius, Junior

        Ahmad Nivins goes up strong

Philadelphia, PA - The hometown Hawks put on a show in their season debut by dropping threes from blocks away and outworking their opponent, the Fairfield Stags, on the glass. The first half saw St. Joe's leap out to a huge advantage, and the majority of the starters rested for the final four minutes. The Stags were unable to break a 3-2 zone with their smaller players, and the second half proved to be much of the same. Two Hawks, Jawan Carter and Pat Calathes, went for 20+ in the 68-57 victory.

        Player of the Game
        Jawan Carter (St. Joe's) - 22 points, 6/7 3PT, 10 assists, 3 steals

        St. Joseph's Hawks
        Pat Calathes - 23 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists
        Ahmad Nivins - 8 points, 9 rebounds

        Fairfield Stags
Michael Van Schaik - 13 points, 2 steals
        Greg Nero - 7 points, 7 rebounds
        Jonathan Han - 6 points, 6 assists

          Bilal Abdullah posed plenty of
          problems for St. Joseph's

Easton, PA - After their season opening victory, the Hawks stumbled onto Lafayette's campus without a worry in the world. From the opening tip, it was apparent that the Leopards' sense of purpose was going to be the difference. At one point, the Hawks managed to pull the game within a single point. However, Lafayette pulled away, and beat St. Joseph's 53-44.

          Player of the Game
Bilal Abdullah (Lafayette) - 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals

          St. Joseph's Hawks

Rob Ferguson finds ways to contribute in
            St. Joseph's fast-paced offensive attack

Philadelphia, PA - Bucknell has surprised their fair share of people in recent years with their team-first-attitude and unity on the basketball court. Because of these things, the Bison win big games over big programs, and they came into Philadelphia with the intention of doing it to the Hawks. However, freshman guard Jawan Carter & Co. jumped out to a huge lead in the first half. Carter hit a total of six three-pointers, paving the way for Joe's. Pat Calathes also had 20+ points, and this game marked the second time this season that both of them dropped over 20 in the same contest. In the end, the Hawks were able to hold off the Bison of Bucknell, 69-57.

            Player of the Game
            Jawan Carter (St. Joe's) - 20 points, 6/8 3PT, 9 assists, 2 steals

            St. Joseph's Hawks
            Pat Calathes - 23 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists
            Rob Ferguson - 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists
            Darrin Govens - 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals

Junior Pat Calathes led Joe's in
                scoring with 17 against Maine

Orono, ME - The Black Bears of Maine didn't appear to be much of a challenge to the Hawks at first glance, and went on to prove that to be the case throughout the contest. The first half consisted of fast break after fast break and easy points for St. Joseph's. Pat Calathes was able to get shots off very easily, and at the half, Joe's held a comfortable advantage of twenty three points.

The second half was much of the same, the only difference being that the Hawks' starters didn't play much. With such a huge lead, Calathes took a breather and enjoyed the view. Although Maine's Kevin Reed and Jon Sheets did everything they could to muster a comeback, it just wasn't in the cards, as St. Joseph's took care of the Black Bears, 81-57.

                Player of the Game

PSU's Geary Claxton takes it to the hole

State College, PA - The Hawks of St. Joseph's made the short trek to State College to take on the Nittany Lions, and hoped to earn yearly bragging rights. The first half saw the two teams exchange baskets nearly the entire time, with Jawan Carter leading the way for Joe's and David Jackson of Penn State. At the intermission, the score was knotted at 28, and the contest looked to be of the low-scoring variety.

Compared to the first half, the second frame was full of offensive fireworks. Carter kept scoring, and Pat Calathes managed to knock a couple of shots down. However, PSU's Geary Claxton proved to be a problem that the Hawks couldn't solve, as he drove to the basket with relative ease too many times to count. After a 13-4 run, the Nittany Lions took the victory to the tune of a 66-61 score.

                  Player of the Game

Phil Martelli's coaching style appeals to youngsters

Philadelphia, PA - All season, the St. Joe's Hawks have targeted a 4* small forward named Iker Grady. The 6'6" swingman that can basically do it all on the court and classroom had Joe's listed as his number one choice, but bolted to Wake Forest just as the signing period arrived.

As a result, Martelli and the Joe's coaching staff have redistributed their one scholarship available to a 6'5" shooting guard out of Connecticut. This young man, Ronald Nicholson, is also a 4* player that would fit into Martelli's system perfectly. The silky smooth 2-guard can shoot the rock and get up and down the court in a hurry. As of now, St. Joseph's has offered Nicholson a scholarship, and they are listed as his #1 choice. However, only time will tell if this talented young man will pursue his career as a Hawk.

                          against the Drexel Dragons

Philadelphia, PA - This season, the Drexel Dragons have popped up in nearly every discussion involving the top Mid-Majors in the country. When they visited the St. Joe's Hawks, coach Phil Martelli was ready to scorch the Dragons with his killer freshmen guards.

The first half went just as planned for Martelli, as Jawan Carter led the way for Joe's with 13 points. The young man also found open teammates, dishing off four assists in the half. Dominick Mejia of Drexel was solid for his team, dropping 8 points to lead the scoring attack for the Dragons.

St. Joseph's pulled away in the second half, and eventually led the game by 24 points. The Dragons went on a run of their own, however, and pulled the game to within single digits for a couple of minutes. Thanks to a few more three pointers by Carter, however, the Hawks pulled away and won 68-57.

I think you messed up earlier in the thread, you had Florida at 7-1, and now they're 9-0.

Looking great though, man. Keep it up.
