I wonder if Gabe Pruitt went after Arron Afflalo's knees with a lead pipe or something.

Atleast UCLA is still good in real life!

Hawks Win Pillow Fight Against Richmond

Pat Calathes lets his frustrations show against the Spiders

Richmond, VA - Flyers spread around the Richmond campus read: Basketball game in the library! Well, not really, but they might as well have. From the opening tip, the gymnasium was deathly quiet, and as a result, neither team was really pumped up or ready to play. Both teams started out very flat shooting the ball, and turnovers were a huge problem for both sides. To sum up the first half, simply stating the score should suffice: 23-18.

Coach Martelli must have delivered an either very inspiring speech during halftime, or he was very threatening, as the Hawks hit the court with a sense of purpose in the second half. Jawan Carter finally hit some shots, but overall, he struggled from the field. Rob Ferguson was decent on the block, but again, nothing spectacular. In the end, the Hawks did just enough to get the win, and claimed the victory 60-54 over Richmond.

            #13 Hawks Fall to Musketeers
            Volume 1, Issue 50

Jawan Carter poses for the crowd between nailing 3's

Cincinnati, OH - With only two games remaining in the 2006-2007 regular season for St. Joe's, the Hawks traveled west to take on the pesky Musketeers. The Hawks were hoping to rebound from an unusually bad shooting night against Richmond, and did just that.

A-10 Player of the Year candidate Jawan Carter didn't even need to score in the first half for the Hawks to be successful. Instead, the young point guard dished to every one of his teammates for easy buckets, and racked up eight assists in the first half alone. Benefiting most from Carter's unselfishness was fellow-guard Darrin Govens, who knocked down three three-pointers in the first several minutes of the contest. Pat Calathes also got on track for Joe's, hitting a couple of shots and grabbing rebounds on the block. Now, just because he didn't particularly need to score, doesn't mean that Carter didn't. The young man was nothing short of amazing, knocking down shots and dropping layups for thirteen first half points. As is easy to see, the Hawks had a field day in the first half, and were up by a huge amount going into the intermission.

Albeit small, Drew Lavendar had played too hard to let his team fall this way in Cincinnati. The veteran point guard made like Carter did in the first half, and passed Xavier's way back into the game. Again, the man who benefited the most was Lavendar's backcourt companion, Stanley Burrell. Burrell was a man possessed in the second half, and knocked down three three-pointers to lead the Musketeers back into the thick of things. With seven minutes left in the contest, Xavier managed to actually pull ahead. Not to be outdone by the opposing guards, Carter stepped his game back up, and battled back and forth with the backcourt of Xavier.

In the final minute, the Hawks managed to go up by three off of a three-pointer by Carter. Burrell answered back with a three of his own, and the Musketeer crowd was chaotic once again. After milking the clock for as long as possible, St. Joe's missed their field goal attempt, and was forced to hurry back on defense. Lavendar took the ball to the hoop, and was fouled, and went to the line to shoot two. The 5'7" guard missed the first, but drained the second of the two free throws. Down by one, the Hawks took the ball upcourt. Of course, Carter was expected by everybody to take the last shot. When he was double teamed on the perimeter, Govens was wide open. Govens received the pass, but clanked the wide open jumpshot. With only 10 seconds remaining, the Hawks were forced to foul, and put Burrell on the line. The guard hit both free throws, setting Joe's back by three. Charging up the court, Carter let go of the three with no time left on the clock. The ball was straight and definitely long enough, but his shot clanked off the back rim, and Xavier won 82-79.

Rob Ferguson throws down the windmill in the loss to UMass

Philadelphia, PA - In the final game of the Hawks' regular season, the Massachusetts Minutemen came to town. The Hawks had dropped their previous contest to the Xavier Musketeers, and hoped to get back on the winning track.

Apparently, St. Joe's didn't want to win as badly as one might have though. UMass got out to a huge early lead behind the inside scoring and rebounding of Rashaun Freeman. The big man collected 10 offensive rebounds in the half, which was three more than the entire Joe's team. Jawan Carter did all that he could to help out the Hawks, scoring 23 in the first half alone. Despite the little man's efforts, the Hawks were down big going into the break.

The second half was nothing better for St. Joe's, and the Minutemen kept pouring it on from downtown. Darrin Govens and Rob Ferguson carried a little bit more of the scoring load in the second period, allowing Carter to rest a little bit. After all was said and done, though, St. Joe's fell 88-83.
