Jawan Carter continued his stellar play against Texas A&M

St. Louis, MO - The number one seeded Texas A&M Aggies entered their contest against the number five seed Hawks with a 28-7 record, but in the NCAA's, records get thrown out the window. Against a team as hot as St. Joseph's, so does your confidence.

The first half of this Sweet 16 matchup saw Jawan Carter, the NCAA Player of the Week, get off to another hot start. The freshman point guard continued to impress people on a national scale, and the Aggies scrambled trying to come up with ways to stop him. Rob Ferguson got to the charity stripe a fair amount of times to contribute to the scoring effort, and after a slightly drab first half, the Hawks were up by four.

To begin the second half, Josh Carter of Texas A&M was tired of being bettered by another guy with the same last name. A&M's Carter hit a few threes to lead the Aggies back into the contest, and Coach Phil Martelli was forced to call a timeout. The experienced leader got his troops straightened out, and the Hawks never looked back. Despite the Aggies last comeback attempt, Jawan Carter & Company locked this one up, and advanced to the Elite Eight after a 82-79 victory.

Jawan Carter scored 23 in the Elite
Eight victory over the Air Force Falcons

St. Louis, MO - The biggest surprise thus far in the tournament is easily the St. Joseph's Hawks. The little-team-that-could, led by freshman point guard Jawan Carter, has cruised into the Elite Eight. With hardly any experience on the floor, the Hawks have dazzled fans in the Tournament, and now appear to be much more than just any ordinary Cinderella story.

The Air Force Falcons had a very good year, and opposed the Hawks in the Tournament to decide who went on to the Final Four. Early on, both offenses struggled, but the Hawks were able to put up a few points and hold onto the lead. After one of the most boring first halves in awhile, St. Joe's held a fairly big lead.

Again, the offenses both appeared sloppy, and the defensive schemes reigned supreme in this matchup. Jawan Carter shot well, of course, and led the Hawks to their easiest victory of the Tournament, despite the late comeback attempt by the Falcons. When all was said and done, the Hawks advanced to the Final Four after the 70-60 win.

Josh McRoberts and Duke go up against the #1 overall Florida Gators

                2006-07 FINAL FOUR MATCHUPS

                Florida Gators

The Gators have been ranked #1 in the country for the entire season, and have only lost twice. Last year's National Champions have a frontcourt loaded with talent, featuring Joakim Noah, a front-runner for the Wooden Award. In the tournament, Florida has gone up against, and defeated, George Mason, Eastern Washington, Arizona, and Ohio State.

                Duke Blue Devils

Duke could honestly be described as a surprise story in the Final Four. All season, the Blue Devils flirted with being bounced from the Top 25, and were among the most inconsistent squads in the country. Headed by Josh McRoberts, Duke plays tough defense and squeaks by on offense. This year, the Devils have defeated American, Wisconsin, Washington State, and Michigan in the NCAA Tournament.

                Virginia Tech Hokies

The 2006-07 season couldn't have been more friendly to Virginia Tech. The Hokies dominated the regular season and the ACC Conference Tournament, and landed a surprising #1 seed in March. The Hokies are very athletic, and can score from anywhere on the court. To get to this point, VT has defeated Minnesota, Northern Arizona, Pittsburgh, and Alabama.

                St. Joseph's Hawks

The pesky 5-seed that nobody could get rid of, the Hawks come into the Final Four playing some of the best basketball out of anybody in the nation. Led by freshman phenom Jawan Carter, the Hawks have a high-octane offense and can run anybody out of the gym. The Hawks have disposed of Marist, Temple, Texas A&M, and Air Force in the Tournament.

                - - -

                The experts pick...

Florida Gators over the Duke Blue Devils
                - Joakim Noah manhandles Josh McRoberts, and the Gators roll to defend their title.

Virginia Tech Hokies over the St. Joseph's Hawks
                - The Hokies played in and conquered one of the best conferences in America. The lack of size hurts and eventually kills the Hawks.

Neither Jawan Carter or Phil Martelli could figure out the Hokie defense

Atlanta, GA - Two of the most surprising teams of the 2006-07 season, the St. Joseph's Hawks and the Virginia Tech Hokies, met in the Final Four with the chance to advance to the National Championship. The Cinderella story ended tonight for one of these teams, but the road to get there was phenomenal.

The first half was sloppy for both squads, but the game was played at such a fast pace, one couldn't help but stay glued to the action. Jawan Carter, such a big piece of the Hawks offense, struggled mightily as the Hokies double and triple teamed the young man on several occasions. To add to this, Carter got himself into early foul trouble, and was forced to miss several minutes of the first half. Thankfully for Martelli's team, though, the Hawks were able to gain a lead early behind the play of power forward Rob Ferguson. The junior hit big shots early and often for St. Joe's, including a couple of three pointers. Virginia Tech got back on track after some huge dunks by Coleman Collins, and the Hokies held a single point lead at halftime.

In the second half, the sloppiness of the Hokies subsided, and the athletic ACC Champs ran away with the contest. Thanks to a 24-3 run, the Hokies were able to hold off the St. Joe's Hawks and Jawan Carter for the 81-74 victory and the chance to play in the National Championship game.

                      Player of the Game
