Hawks Erase Explorers
Volume 1, Issue 42

Jawan Carter drills the shot from long range against La Salle
Philadelphia, PA - The Hawks took on the only Big 5 squad they haven't already played, the La Salle Explorers, on the La Salle campus. The city of Philadelphia had grown to love St. Joseph's in these matchups, as the Hawks were considered dominant this season within the Big 5.
From the opening tip, it was obvious that the Hawks held an advantage. Jawan Carter and Joe's jumped out to an early 21-4 lead, and Coach Martelli seemed very pleased with his team's effort. Rob Ferguson played extremely well on the block, dropping ten points in the opening half. The true power of St. Joseph's, Ahmad Nivins, got into early foul trouble, and missed much of the first half because of it. Despite the loss, the Hawks held a comfortable lead at halftime.
The second half was completely different, as the Hawks coughed up their once gigantic lead. La Salle battled back, and actually brought themselves to within a point of Joe's. The Explorers struggled mightily from beyond the arc, which is generally considered to be their strong point. Instead, the young Explorers battled back on the inside behind the strong rebounding efforts of Mike St. John. The center grabbed fifteen rebounds on the afternoon, but eventually, even he couldn't keep La Salle within a respectful margin. Carter hit a couple of daggers, and the Hawks put away the Explorers, 76-63.

Joe's Cripples Colonials
Volume 1, Issue 44

Rob Ferguson poured in a season-high 27 points against GW
Philadelphia, PA - The media-draw of this Atlantic 10 matchup was nothing short of extraordinary. How would Joe's react to their newly gained respect in the polls? What would Coach Martelli do different against the Colonials this time around? How would two marquee point guards matchup in this one?
What was short of extraordinary, however, was the competition itself. The Hawks jumped out to a huge lead very early in the ball game, and never looked back. The duo of Jawan Carter and Rob Ferguson dropped shots from inside and outside the three-point line, and proved to be too much for the visiting Colonials. In the last game between these two schools, George Washington pressed the Hawks for as long as the game lasted. This time, Joe's returned the favor, and forced GW into numerous turnovers. After all was said and done, the Hawks won this one easily, 92-71.

Hawks Survive at St. Bonaventure
Volume 1, Issue 45

The Hawks' Ahmad Nivins battles for position in the post
St. Bonaventure, NY - The #23 St. Joseph's Hawks took their show on the road to the north, and the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure stood in the way. The Bonnies always posed problems within the A10, especially on their home floor.
Early on, it appeared as if the Hawks forgot their talent back in Philadelphia. Although Carter hit a couple of threes early on, St. Joe's fell behind by a huge margin. At one point, St. Bonaventure led by 21 points, and the Hawks' most effective play-call turned out to be the timeout. After Martelli's thirty second speech, the Hawks climbed back into the game, and hit numerous big shots. At the half, St. Joe's trailed by six, but they considered themselves lucky to be that close.
The second half was an entirely different story, as the Hawks forced the Bonnies into numerous turnovers that turned into easy points. St. Joe's pulled away, and before long, St. Bonaventure was completely out of the picture. Late in the game, the Bonnies chose to foul, and the Hawks won 80-71.

Joe's Takes Round Two Against Temple
Volume 1, Issue 47

Rob Ferguson scores down low against the Temple Owls
Philadelphia, PA - St. Joseph's grabbed the 20-spot in the most recent Polls, and put it on the line against their cross-town rivals, the Temple Owls. The first half went just as planned for Coach Martelli's troops, as the Hawks jumped out to a 13-0 lead. Joe's was able to take advantage of Jawan Carter's ballhandling abilities, as he set up and distributed for five assists in the first half. Edwin Lashley contributed off the bench for the Hawks, draining three from downtown, as Joe's coasted for a ten point lead at the half.
The second half saw the tides turn, and the Owls fought their way back into the contest. Mark Tyndale and Donte Christmas hit a few three pointers for Temple, and before long, the Hawks' once comfortable lead was down to two. Martelli put all of his starters back into the game around the 7:45 mark, and St. Joe's never looked back. Carter stepped up as a scorer, and led the Hawks to the 74-62 victory.
