Ospreys Fall to Bisons
North Florida Loses a Close One in Nashville
Rashad Williams with a thunderous tomahawk dunk.
12/2/06
Nashville, TN (AP) – The Lipscomb Bisons earned their first Atlantic Sun Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena in front of a sparse crowd with a 66-58 victory over the North Florida Ospreys (1-5,0-2). Brian Fisk led the Bisons with 15 points and 13 rebounds to go along with his game high six assists.
The North Florida Ospreys struggled all night to climb out of an early hole. After falling behind 18-3 early on, the Ospreys scratched and clawed their way back into this one, trailing by just two at the break 35-33.
But the Bisons would open the second half on an 8-0 run to get the lead back to 10. The Ospreys would not go away though and they clawed their way back to tie the game at 57-57 with just 2:37 left. They would not hist another field goal the rest of the way as the Bisons outscored them 9-1 to keep the Ospreys winless in A-Sun action.
True freshman Germain Sparks led the Ospreys with 13 points. Rashad Williams had a season high 16 rebounds. Chris Timberlake, plagued by early foul trouble, was held to a season low three points.
Both teams shot horribly from the field. Lipscomb shot 39% while North Florida shot 34%. The difference may have been at the line where Lipscomb went 12 of 15 from the line and North Florida struggled, hitting just 11 of 19.
Lipscomb outrebounded the Ospreys 45-39.
Up next for the Ospreys is a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia for a non-conference tilt with the College of William and Mary (3-2) out of the Colonial Athletic Conference on Friday evening.

Thanks for checking in. Sparks seems to be hot and cold. When he is hot, I try to get him the ball. The offense revolves around Timberlake and his ability to drive to the hoop. If he can drive it opens up everything else.Comment

Bearcats Edge Ospreys
Poor Shooting Dooms North Florida in Loss
Bearcat players “celebrate” their road victory, sort of.
12/18/06
Jacksonville, FL (AP) – The North Florida Ospreys returned home on Monday evening after a ten day layoff and the rust was evident. The Ospreys played a very sloppy game and dropped a 60-57 decision to the Binghamton Bearcats (4-5).
North Florida was led by James Grimball who scored a season high 13 points. Chris Timberlake chipped in 12 while Rashad Williams was his typical ball hawk on the boards with 13.
Troy Hailey paced the Bearcats with 16, including three long range bombs, all in the second half.
Neither team shot well as Binghamton shot 33% and North Florida shot 38%. The Ospreys led by 10 early in the game but led by just two at the break at 30-28.
Binghamton would open the second half on a 10-2 run and would only trail once more with just 1:15 left at 57-56. After Binghamton hit a free throw to tie it, Germaine Starkes missed a difficult shot on the baseline. The freshman was 2 of 14 from the floor. The Bearcats then hit one of two free throws to take a 58-57 lead with :17 left, but a turnover by Timberlake and subsequent layup by Duane James sealed it.
Up next for the Opsreys is a matchup with Florida A&M (4-4) on Wednesday evening at UNF Arena.

Leslie Robinson gets ready to throw down a nasty dunk for the Rattlers.
12/20/06
Jacksonville, FL (AP) – The 146th-ranked Florida A&M Rattlers shot the lights out in the first half at UNF Arena on Wednesday evening. Then they pulled away late to beat the 290th-ranked North Florida Ospreys 78-66. Rome Sanders led the way with 16 points and 13 rebounds for the visitors.
The Rattlers (5-4) out of the MEAC opened up a 28-6 lead midway through the first half on 90% shooting yet only led 44-36 at the break thanks to some defensive adjustments by the Ospreys.
UNF actually took the lead at 53-51 with 6:56 left in the game before a 12-2 run sealed it and sent the Ospreys to their second straight loss.
For the game, FAMU shot 58% while UNF was held to 38%. The Rattlers also outrebounded UNF 39-36.

Re: The Jim Janis Legacy.....
Fighting Camels Bounce Ospreys
Campbell Keeps North Florida Winless in A-Sun
Chip Polite with one of the few UNF highlights on Tuesday.
1/2/07
Jacksonville, FL (AP) – The University of North Florida knew when they hired Jim Janis that they may be in for a long season. They have a young team and they have a couple of transfers that should help immediately, next season.
On Tuesday evening at the UNF Arena, the Ospreys dropped a hard fought 73-69 decision to the Campbell Fighting Camels.
Free throw shooting played a huge role in this one, but neither team could take advantage at the charity stripe. Campbell shot just 41% from the line (7-17) while the Ospreys shot a pedestrian 48% (13-27).
Trailing 41-33 at the break, the Ospreys were able to close it to 52-51 at the 10 minute mark, but could never get over the hump, so to speak. Campbell seemed to answer every bucket with one of their own and they outrebounded the Ospreys 49-41.
Ruell Pringle led the way for Campbell with 14 points and 11 boards.
Chris Timberlake led the Ospreys with 17 points.
Up next for North Florida is the a matchup with Gardner-Webb (2-8,0-1) on Thursday night at the Arena.

Player of the Game: Ruell Pringle (Campbell) 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists

Ospreys Edge Bulldogs
North Florida Gets First Conference Victory
Chris Timberlake pulls up for a three.
1/4/07
Jacksonville, FL (AP) – The University of North Florida finally notched one in the win column in conference play on Thursday night as they struggled, but pulled out a last minute victory over Gardner-Webb University, 68-64. Chris Timberlake hit two free throws with 36.7 seconds left to give North Florida their first lead, then made a steal with 3.1 seconds left to seal the victory.
The Bulldogs ran out to an early 18-6 lead on red hot shooting. The Ospreys seemed to have trouble with Jake Sims quickness and gave the Bulldogs plenty of layup opportunities in the opening half.
Jonson Yousefzadeh coming off the bench added 9 points, all on three balls to help North Florida tie it up at halftime at 27-27. Despite the fact that UNF was only 3 of 9 from the line in the first half, a disturbing trend as of late.
Gardner-Webb (2-9,0-2) went on a mini-run to open the second half again and opened back up a ten point lead at 45-35 with under ten to play, but a pesky Osprey team kept plugging away and eventually started to play some better defense. (ie. They stopped giving up layups).
The Ospreys cut the lead to one on a Cortez Riley three ball with under two to go, then tied it when Chip Polite (Sophomore, Hollywood HS) hit one of two free throws setting up the dramatic finish by Timberlake.
On the game, the Ospreys shot just 39%, but shot 50% from beyond the arc (6 of 12) and outrebounded Gardner-Webb 40-39.
Up next for North Florida is a home game against cross town rival Jacksonville (4-8,2-2) on Tuesday night.
North Florida 68, Gardner-Webb 64
Player of the Game: Chris Timberlake (North Florida) 17 points
North Florida Ospreys:
Chris Timberlake – 17 points, 5/6 FTs

North Florida in a Romp
Ospreys Blowout Rival Dolphins 80-58
Germaine Sparkes had a breakout game against the Dolphins.
1/9/07
Jacksonville, FL (AP) – On Tuesday night at UNF Arena you could throw the records out the window as two fierce rivals renewed their bitter rivalry. Unfortunately the game didn’t live up to the much anticipated hype as North Florida blew Jacksonville out of the water with an impressive 80-58 victory.
True freshman Germaine Sparkes scored a career high 26 points on 11 of 13 shooting to “spark” the Ospreys. The only weakness in his game was his inability to make free throws. He was just 1 of 7 from the line. Jacksonville (4-9,2-3) did not have a player who could guard Sparkes on this night and he dazzled the sparse home crowd with a few highlight reel dunks.
North Florida (4-8,2-3) was in control of this one from the start and they led 39-22 at the break. The Dolphins opened the second half on a 14-2 run to dut the Osprey lead to 41-36 but they would never get closer and a decisive 19-2 run put this one away.
North Florida struggled again from the line shooting just 44% (8-18) but the key was the fact that UNF outrebounded Jacksonville 47-37.
The Ospreys will next travel to Johnson City on Saturday afternoon for a matchup with East Tennessee State (4-11,1-5).

Ospreys Down Bucs
UNF Runs Win Streak to Three
Germaine Sparkes on a breakway in the first half.
1/13/07
Johnson City, TN (AP) – The North Florida Ospreys ran their win streak to three games on Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Center as they took out the East Tennesse State Buccaneers 85-76. Chris Timberlake led the way for the Ospreys with 16 points, four assists and three steals.
The Ospreys led just 44-43 at the break but were able to open up a comfortable 62-47 lead with under ten to play. But a stubborn ETSU (4-12,1-6) team would not go away and they pounded the ball inside to not only score but dominate on the boards. The Bucs would close to within 68-62, but woud get no closer as a 10-0 run put the game away.
“I thought that we played our game. We ran the floor and took the ball to the rack. If we do that we can overcome our defensive shortcomings and our rebounding disadvantage,” said a happy Coach Janis in the postgame.
For the game, the Ospreys shot 44% to ETSU’s 45% but were outrebounded 48-31. UNF held a big advantage at the line though, making 17 of 26 while the Bucs attempted just 11 free throws and made eight.
The Ospreys (5-8,3-3) will travel to Kennesaw, Georgia on Monday night for a big showdown with first place Kennesaw State (10-8,6-1).
North Florida 85, East Tennessee State 76

1/15/07

Golden Ingle led the way with 20 points and six assists for the first place Owls who improved to (11-8,7-1).
Chris Timberlake was the Ospreys leading scorer with 20 while Aaron Caruthers chipped in 18.
Kennesaw State had a huge rebounding edge outrebounding the Ospreys 59-32. “We need to box out better and stop giving up so many second chance points. If we continue to play like we did tonight, we won’t win too many more games,” said a dejected coach Janis following the loss.
