North Florida Wins on Williams Putback

    1/18/07
Jacksonville, FL (AP) – Rashad Williams has been a rebounding force for North Florida this season. On Thursday night, the senior from Macon, Georgia showed some unexpected offense including a game-winning putback with 3.5 seconds left as North Florida stunned Stetson 75-74.

It was a back-and-forth game from the start with the Ospreys leading just 40-37 at the break. North Florida would open up a 12 point lead early in the second half at 52-40, but a Hatter run cut the defecit to 56-55 and the game was back and forth the rest of the way.

North Florida moved the ball down the court and Chris Timberlake drove the lane and put up a wild shot that was rebounded by Rashad Williams. Stetson inbounded the ball and threw up a prayer from about 60 feet that bounced off the backboard.

          Fighting Camels Win in Overtime
North Florida Plays Tough on the Road.

Chris Timberlake with an drive to the hoop.

          1/25/07
Buies Creek, NC (AP) – The North Florida Ospreys suffered their second heart-wrenching loss of the season at the hands of the Campbell Fighting Camels on Thursday evening with a 69-63 overtime loss at a racous Carter Gymnasium.

Jonathan Rodriguez got fouled by James Grimball with 3.3 second left in regulation and Campbell down by 1. He calmly nailed the first, but missed the second to force overtime.

In the overtime, Eric Smith took over, scoring 8 of his game high 18 points in the extra session to help the Fighting Camels improve to (8-8,6-3).

Neither team shot the ball well. They both shot just 30% from the floor. North Florida went 6 for 25 (24%) from beyond the arc while the Camels were just 2 of 12 (17%). The difference in this one was at the free throw line where Campbell went to the line 24 more times than North Florida. They shot 75% from the line (21 of 28) which ended up being the difference in this one.

“How is there that type of discrepancy in free throws!?” asked an exasperated Coach Janis afterwards. “Our guys played a great game and they just did not get any calls. I guess that is what happens on the road. I am sure I will be paying for that comment.”

The Ospreys will continue their road trip on Saturday evening when they travel to Paul Porter Arena in Boiling Springs, North Carolina to take on Gardner-Webb (4-14,2-7). The Ospreys defeated the Bulldogs 68-64 on January 4th in Jacksonville.

Thanks for checking in. I am loving this and I am surprised at how decent this team is. Timberlake is the man but Sparkes has his moments and Williams is a monster on the boards. Its too bad that we lose Williams to graduation. I am looking to bring in a couple of rebounders that can play defense.

Jacksonville, FL (AP) – The North Florida Ospreys returned home after a four game road trip and played their best game of the season as they shocked rival Kennesaw State 84-46. Cortez Riley led the way with 15 points as UNF outscored the Owls 48-17 in the second half.

The first half was a back and forth affair before the Ospreys closed it out on a 10-2 run to take a surprising 38-29 lead into the intermission.

The second half was all Ospreys as they opened with a 24-4 run to blow this one wide open. They split the season series with arch-rival Kennesaw State (14-11,10-4) as the Owls won big back in Kennesaw in early January.

North Florida shot a sizzling 50% from the field while holding the Owls to just 26%. The Ospreys also had a season high 16 assists and only 6 turnovers while outrebounding Kennesaw State 54-38.

Up next for the Ospreys is a home game on Saturday afternoon at 2pm against East Tennessee State (9-14,6-8).

                        ETSU Pulls Away Late

James Grimball with a monster dunk in the first half.

                        2/10/07
Jacksonville, FL (AP) – The East Tennessee State Buccaneers came into Jacksonville playing well as of late. That stretch continued on Saturday afternoon as they pulled away late and upset the North Florida Ospreys 82-72. Kenyona Swader poured in 13 points while adding six rebounds and 3 assists in the victory.

The Buc (10-14,7-8) led at the break 38-34 thanks to some very good defense and horrible free-thorw shooting by North Florida. The Ospreys shot just 48% from the line (13 of 27) while the Bucs shot 71% (17 of 24). Neither team could hit from the outside either as ETSU went 1 for 7 while North Florida went 1 for 9.

In a tie game down the stretch, the Ospreys could not make a bunch of close shots and that ended up costing them the game. They blew at least five or six layups in the closing minutes with the game on the line and ETSU made their free throws.

“We need to finish. Plain and simple.” Said Coach Janis afterwards.

James Grimball led the Ospreys with 16 points while Rashad Williams had a huge game with 15 points and a career high 19 rebounds.

Up next for the Ospreys is a trip to DeLand, Florida to take on the Stetson Hatters (6-18,3-11) on Thursday evening.

Lowly Stetson Deals Blow to North Florida

Gabe McMillen hit a shot with 1.1 second left in regulation to send the game to overtime.

                            2/15/07
DeLand, FL (AP) – It is incredible how a season can change. Just one week ago, the North Florida Ospreys upset the top team in the Atlantic Sun when they whalloped Kennesaw State by 38 points.

On Thursday evening at the Edmunds Center, the Ospreys lost to last place Stetson, 74-72 in overtime.

Gabe McMillen was the Osprey killer as he hit a 5 footer with just 1.1 seconds left in regulation time to send the game to overtime, then he nailed a huge three pointer with 41.3 seconds left in overtime to seal it as the Hatters won for the third time in their last five.

McMillen and Mark Lohuis each chipped in 12 points for Stetson (7-18,4-11) while Jonson Yousefzadeh scored a game high 16 points on four of six shooting from beyond the arc.

This game seemed to be won in the trenches where the Hatters outrebounded North Florida 59-49 including 18-8 on the offensive glass. The 18 offensive rebounds led to 22 second chance points for Stetson.

On positive for the Ospreys was free-throw shooting. They shot 18 of 26 (69%) from the line . They are ninth in the A-Sun, shooting just 59% from the line on the year.

The Ospreys next travel to Macon for a Sunday afternoon contest with Mercer (15-9,10-5).
