    Ospreys Hold Off Bisons
    North Florida Gets Key Victory

Germaine Sparkes with a tomahawk jam.

    2/22/07
Jacksonville, FL(AP) – The Atlantic Sun Tournament is less than a week away and North Florida seems to be rounding into tourney form as they won their second straight with a 73-65 victory over the Lipscomb Bisons on Thursday evening. Freshman Germaine Sparkes had a dominating performance with 16 points, including a couple thunderous dunks, and 6 rebounds.

North Florida (12-13,9-8) moved into fifth place in the A-Sun with just one conference game left, against leader Belmont on Saturday evening at the UNF Arena. Lipscomb, which led the A-Sun early on has fallen to 8th place after dropping its eighth game in their past nine.

The Ospreys led 40-33 at the break and extended the lead to a confortable 57-42 margin and seemed to be in control. Then they went cold from the floor, not scoring a basket for 8 minutes and allowing Lipscomb to climb back into it. Jonson Yousefzadeh, who led the Ospreys for a third straight game in scoring, then hit a couple of big threes to seal it.

Lipscomb commited a season high 21 turnovers on the evening which didn’t help matters even though they outrebounded North Florida 43-39.

“What can I say about Jonson? He has really helped us late in the year with his shooting and it can only help us come tourney time.” Said Coach Janis afterwards.

The Ospreys will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon as they host Belmont (16-11,11-6).

    North Florida 73, Lipscomb 65

Player of the Game: Germaine Sparkes (UNF) 16 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals

    North Florida Ospreys:
    Jonson Yousefzadeh – 17 points
    Germaine Sparkes – 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals
    Rashad Williams – 8 points, 9 rebounds
    Chris Timberlake – 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists

    Lispcomb Bisons:
    Brian Fisk – 18 points
    Eddie Ard – 15 points, 13 rebounds
    Devon Seaford – 8 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, 7 TO’s

    Record: (12-13,9-8)

      Bruins Blowout Ospreys
Belmont Pulls Away Late For Blowout 101-72

Andrew Preston had a big first half to lead Belmont.

      2/24/07
Jacksonville, FL(AP) – The North Florida Ospreys were on a roll heading into their senior day matinee with conference leader Belmont. For 35 minutes, the Ospreys hung with the Bruins, then things fell apart as Belmont (17-11,12-6) finished the game on a 26-2 run to win goiing away 101-72.

North Florida (12-14,9-9) actually led 35-30 late in the first half but trailed at halftime 41-37. Belmont opened the second half on a 10-0 run, but the Ospreys answered thanks to some big threes by Chris Tiberlake, who finished with 26 points on 5 of nine shooting from downtown, to pull to within 55-54.

It would be nip and tuck from there until there was five minutes left. Leading 76-70, the Bruins took over and made 10 straight shots from the field down the stretch to make this one look alot easier than it was.

Belmont shot 60% from the floor while UNF shot just 35%. The Ospreys made a season high 11 three pointers but were just 11 of 32 from beyond the arc. Belmont dominated on the glass too, outrebounding the Ospreys 49-28. The Bruins also scored an incredible 68 points in the paint!

Up next is the Atlantic Sun Tournament in which Belmont will be the top seed.

      Belmont 101, North Florida 72

Player of the Game: Andy Wicke (Belmont) 16 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists

      North Florida Ospreys:
      Chris Timberlake – 26 points
      Jonson Yousefzadeh – 14 points, 3 assists, 5-25 shooting
      James Grimball – 11 points, 10 rebounds

      Belmont Bruins:
      Josh Goodwin – 18 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists
      Andy Wicke – 16 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists
      Boomer Herndon – 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks

      Record: (12-14,9-9)

                  Camels Bomb Ospreys
                  North Florida Ousted in Quarterfinals

Ledell Eackles scores an easy two.

                  2/28/07
New Orleans, LA(AP) – They say that it is tough to beat a team three times in one season. Campbell defeated North Florida twice in two very tight games in the regular season. On Wednesday evening in the third quarterfinal game of the Atlantic Sun Tournament in New Orleans, the Camels proved that theory wrong as they walloped North Florida, 89-59.

The Ospreys looked very disinterested in this one from the start. They missed layups, played very little defense and couldn’t rebound. A recipe for disaster in the conference tournament as a veteran Campbell squad took advantage of a pretty young North Florida squad.

“When you don’t defend or rebound, you will be in trouble,” said Coach Janis. “When you can’t shoot either, that leads to what you saw tonight. I am not sure what else I could say. We were prepared, but we just did not execute.”

Eric Smith led the romp with 17 points. Reggie Bishop tossed in 15 points and Ledell Eackles had 14 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists.

Chris Timberlake led the Ospreys (12-15) with 15 points on 6 of 22 shooting. Rashad Williams had a forgettable final game. He got into early foul trouble and ended up with just 4 points and 6 rebounds before fouling out.

Campbell moves on to the semifinals to take on the winner of the Belmont-Jacksonville game.

                  Campbell 89, North Florida 59

Player of the Game: Eric Smith (Campbell) 17 points, 4 rebounds, 3/3 3pt

Jim Janis starts his second year at North Florida and keeps his two assistants, Bienvenu Esparza and Chip Dunleavy. Esparza, 54, is especially good at scouting opponents and comes to UNF with a B- scouting rating. Dunleavy, 39, is a defensive specialist and really doesn’t contribute too much else. Coach Janis’ charisma rating is now an A+. All of his other attributes are C-.
