    Vols Blowout Ospreys
Tennessee Runs North Florida out of the building.

Tom Hammonds with an electrifying dunk.

    12/26/07
Knoxville, TN (AP) – Coach Jim Janis knew that life without Chris Timberlake would be tough for his North Florida Ospreys. On Wednesday evening at Thompson-Boling Arena he found out just how tough, as North Florida was routed 74-51 by the Tennessee Volunteers.

JaJuan Smith led all scorers with 18 points and added 10 rebounds for the Vols.

North Florida opened the game on a 14-4 run with Aaron Caruthers dumping in the Ospreys first 11 points, but after a Tennessee timeout, the Vols put the hammer down and cruised to the easy victory.

Tom Hammonds led the Ospreys with 15 points. Caruthers finished with 13. Germaine Sparkes had 10 points and 5 assists.

The big story in this one was the lack of composure by North Florida. They made just 5 of 22 free throws and were outrebounded 41-23. The Vols (8-4) bench outscored the Ospreys bench 34-8.

The Ospreys (2-8) will continue their road trip on Saturday evening as they visit Florida International (5-4).

      Ospreys Lose Heartbreaker
FIU Ties it at the buzzer, then wins it in overtime.

Joey Cantens nails a shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

      12/29/07
Miami, FL (AP) – Just when it looked like the North Florida Ospreys would pull themselves out of their six game losing streak, Joey Cantens hit a 15 footer at the end of regulation time for Florida International and the Golden Panthers went on to defeat North Florida 77-73.

The Ospreys (2-9) looked poised to win for the first time since November 24 when they defeated SMU as they led 61-51 with six minutes left in regulation. But they would hit just two free throws down the stretch and no field goals in the final eight and a half minutes of regulation setting up Cantens for his late game heroics.

The Golden Panthers (6-4), out of the Sun Belt Conference, were led by Alex Galindo who scored 19 points and added 9 rebounds.

North Florida (2-9) were led by junior Tom Hammonds. He had 22 points, 8 boards, and five steals. Germaine Sparkes chipped in 11 points and added 11 rebounds.

FIU shot 43% from the floor while the Ospreys shot just 35%. North Florida had 11 assists and only 3 turnovers while the Panthers had 13 assists and 14 turnovers. The Ospreys also outrebounded Florida International 45-43.

The Ospreys will try to break their seven game losing streak on January 8th when they face cross-town rival Jacksonville on the road.

Florida International 77, North Florida 73 (OT)

Player of the Game: Joey Cantens (FIU) 18 points, 4 rebounds

          The Streak Is Over!
North Florida Dumps Cross Town Rival Jacksonville 89-67

Stan Januska was on fire, here hitting a J.

          1/8/08
Jacksonville, FL (AP) – It’s over!

The North Florida Ospreys seven game losing streak is history as they beat down cross-town rival Jacksonville 89-67 at the Vetrens Memorial Coliseum. Stan Januska scored a career high 20 points, going 4 for 7 from beyond the arc.

The Ospreys appeared as though they were going to blow out the Dolphins (3-8,1-2) from the get go as they opened up a 29-10 lead midway through the first half. But Jacksonville responded with a 24-9 run to close the half to cut the UNF lead to just four at the break.

The Dolphins would tie the game at 46-46, before Januska and Tom Hammonds took over. Hammonds scored 19 points, 14 in the second half. Aaron Caruthers, starting in place of the injured Chris Timberlake, had a career high nine assists for North Florida.

Lehmon Colbert led the Dolphins with 16 points and 6 boards.

Both teams shot relatively well from the floor. JU shot 49% while UNF shot 47%. The Dolphins went 0 for 8 from beyond the arc, though. North Florida continued to struggle from the line, making just 13 of 19 free throws. The Ospreys had no turnovers on the night while forcing 14 Dolphin miscues.

North Florida (3-9,1-2) returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they visit Belmont (7-7,2-2).
