Houston, TX - Texas Southern caught a break upon learning that PVU SF Jonathan Dixon was sidelined with a separated shoulder. Being the only legitimate 3 pt shooter thus far for the Panthers, Coach Lewis collapsed the Tiger defense into a zone for the entire game.

The strategy backfired in the first half as hot shooting from the Panthers (5/9 3 pt) gave Prairie View the lead for most of the opening half. Andy Genao led the Panthers in scoring with 20 pts in the game, 4/7 from beyond the 3pt line. Unfortunately for Prairie View, foul trouble plagued Genao throughout the game. A fourth foul with seven minutes remaining ended any comeback hopes that the Panthers had.

    Prairie View Panthers
    A. Genao - 20 pts, 4 rebs, 7/13 fg, 4/7 3pt
    J. Cobb - 7 pts, 15 rebs

    Texas Southern Tigers
    C. Brown - 15 pts, 2 reb, 2 ast, 5/8 fg, 2/4 3pt
    S. Norwood - 15 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 5/13 fg, 4/9 3pt

            Texas Southern (9-1, 13-5) @Jackson St (4-7, 10-14)

Jackson, MS - Jackson State lost their scoring leader, Trey Johnson, to injury on January 20th while dropping a game at Grambling. Johnson would miss two weeks in all. During that span, JSU dropped all three games, extending their losing streak to five games and falling into last place. Johnson returned to JSU's starting lineup on Monday at Southern, leading all scorers with 25 points as Jackson State ended their losing streak 82-69 against the Southern Jaguars. Texas Southern now visits Jackson looking to avenge their only conference loss so far this season....

Texas Southern and Jackson State battled throughout a tight contest. The TSU bench may have been the difference in this game, out-scoring Jackson State's bench 30-13. In each half, the TSU reserves came into the game tied and were able to open up an 8-pt lead. In the first half, it was Sollie Norwood hitting on a couple of clutch 3-pters. In the second half, freshman St. Paul Latham made some crucial inside scoring plays to give TSU a short-lived lead.

Short-lived because Jackson State star Trey Johnson quickly eliminated the deficits in both halves. In the final minute of the game, a missed free throw by Courtenay Brown gave Jackson St an opportunity to tie the game with a 3-pt shot with 10 seconds remaining. Hilton Tompkins missed the 3-pt shot (after making a clutch 3-pter just 10 seconds earlier) to seal the victory for TSU.

"We decided not to double-team Trey Johnson in this game, and this may be a more effective way to defend the entire team. Jackson State has as much talent as any team in the SWAC. Not many teams will want to face them in the conference tourney." - Coach Lewis

            Texas Southern Tigers
            C. Brown - 19 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast, 4 stl, 1 blk, 7/16 fg, 2/6 3pt
            J. Jones - 13 pts, 0/2 fg, 0/0 3pt, 13/16 ft

            Jackson State Tigers
            T. Johnson - 26 pts, 3 rebs, 2 asts, 3 stl, 8/14 fg, 2/4 3pt
            H. Tompkins - 11 pts, 11 rebs, 2 ast, 4/17 fg, 3/8 3pt

Creating the new sliders was generated by a discussion in the coach-mode thread about a problem with earlier sliders that occurred on the 360, but not the ps2. The problem was that 3pt attempts far exceeded those of the opponents. For a small conference school, such as Morehead State, this wasn't too much an issue. However, once some coaches went to a strong shooting team like Nevada, scores skyrocketed into the 120's per game.

From the above stats, you can see that TSU leads the SWAC in 3PAPG. However, defensively, TSU is closer to the middle of the pack. In addition, personal coaching style has an impact here as well. Basically, I have certain plays that I like to call when the opponent goes into a zone defense, plays that set up my best 3pt shooter for an open perimeter shot. By influencing the game through my call playing, it isn't unreasonable to expect that my 3PA numbers may be higher than the CPU coaches.
              Just a short side track:

Your 3papg/fgapg ratio (30.1%) is not really that far off from what it actually was in real life. Texas Southern's real life ratio was 27.7% but that also included players that are not on the game's roster. I'm pretty sure that if you only take into consideration the players that are on the game's roster, that the real life 3papg/fgapg ratio would be closer to your's. That would mean that you have pretty much nailed the 3pt range tendency slider.

              Now, back to the thread:

You have done a great job coaching the kids this season. Keep up the good work.

Grambling, LA - The Grambling State Tigers currently own the best conference home record in the SWAC at 5-1. Their only loss was to second place Alcorn State.

                    [/CENTER]

With Grambling's starting freshman PG, Charles Harper, out with a broken toe, junior SG Brion Rush stepped in with a career game to lead the Grambling Tigers to the victory. Rush scored 21 pts, going 3/3 from beyond the 3 pt line, despite frequent double-teams by Texas Southern.

Foul trouble kept senior PF Chris Moore out of most of the second half. Even with Moore in the game, TSU was having problems on the boards though. The game remained tight until the midway point of the second half, at which point TSU's shooting went cold. Without the threat of any perimeter scoring, Grambling collapsed into zone defenses, stifling any inside scoring.

"In many ways, we are still a one-dimensional team offensively. When both Brown and Norwood are missing their 3-pt shots, we are going to need someone to step up and establish themselves inside. Moore's foul troubles certainly didn't help. Grambling deserved a lot of credit, too. They shut down the inside game not only with their size advantage, but by cutting into our passing lanes really well. We made too many careless turnovers, especially when you consider the point of the season we are at." - Coach Lewis

                    Texas Southern Tigers
                    C. Brown - 22 pts, 9/21 fg, 4/14 3pt
                    S. Norwood - 17 pts, 2 reb, 2 ast, 4/10 fg, 3/6 3pt

For the second game in a row, the Tigers came out stone-cold shooting. At the half, the leading scorer was backup PG Nick Walker (5/5 fg 10 pts). No other player had more than a single field goal or four points. Certainly the Tigers counted themselves fortunate to be tied at 30-30 despite the ice cold shooting.

An empassioned (and colorful) halftime talk from Coach Lewis energized the team in the second half as Courtenay Brown came out and connected on his first three field goals after the break. The Tigers also started dominating the boards in the second half, led by the steadily improving freshman PF St. Paul Latham.

Houston, TX - For the third game in a row, the TSU Tigers struggled through an off-shooting night. A growing dominance on the boards helped the Tigers to prevail in this game. Also, MVSU's 10/17 performance from the free throw line didn't hurt the hometown Tigers' cause.

"You have to like the improvements being shown on defense and especially on rebounding. But, for every player to seemingly be cold shooting --- this is getting to be more than a small concern. From our 3-pt shots to simple layups on fast breaks, every shot is becoming an adventure." - Coach Lewis

Normal, AL - "I suppose I can't complain too much about our continued shooting drought, not with the win and the Bulldogs' 34.4% output. I just am surprised how vulnerable our guys are to the slightest bit of pressure, especially under the basket. Right now, they are depending on calls from the referees to bail them out, and this has to stop." - Coach Lewis

The Tigers' zone defense forced Alabama A&M to shoot more 3-pt shots than they were comfortable with. All except FR SG Cornelius Hester, who came off the bench for 21 pts, 7/7 fg, 3/3 3pt, and 4/4 ft. This is a player to watch in the years to come.
