Houston, TX - The largest home crowd in Coach Lewis' tenure was on hand to see the young coach win his 20th collegiate game on his fifth try. "Maybe I was just waiting for a home game." - grinned Coach Lewis.

Despite shooting less than 30% from the field, the Richmond Spiders nearly won this game. They were helped in part by a 38-27 advantage in rebounds plus a 19 to 4 advantage in free throws made. "It seemed like all Richmond had to do was drive the ball to the basket and they would be rewarded with two free throws. We have to learn from this game and play smarter defensively."

Houston, TX - Mohammed Kohavecic showed his freshman inexperience, drawing two quick fouls in the first half of this game and sitting on the bench for the remainder of the half. When the opportunity presented itself, Sollie Norwood found his shooting touch for the first time this season, scoring 22 first half points to pace the Tigers to the victory. "What I like most is that everyone stepped up in this game. You can go down our lineup and see strong contributions from each player. This is what we need to continuously improve on."

Defensively, the Tigers focused on applying pressure to Buffalo point guard Eric Moore. When Moore was out of the game, TSU switched to various zone defenses which left the Bulls confused offensively. " I had a vision in which we were playing the Bulls in a tight game. After trying various strategies, I found one that seemed to show promise when all of a sudden the world went black with the glowing three letters DDE floating in the sky. I have no idea what DDE means, but the defensive strategy sure worked well." - Coach Marc "Nostradamus" Lewis

      Buffalo Bulls
      A. Connelly (PF) - 18 pts, 10 reb, 6/15 fg, 3/6 3pt
      J. Gansey - 14 pts, 4 reb, 6/15 fg, 1/7 3pt

      J. Jones - 14 pts, 6 reb, 4 ast

Houston, TX - The St. John's Red Storm fouled early, fouled late, and fouled often in this ballgame. Despite accruing 13 fouls in the first half, St. John's came out in the second half making no adjustments to their game strategy. Their tight-pressure defense earned the Red Storm the bonus with 12 minutes remaining in the game. This led to a 28-19 TSU advantage in free throws made, more than the final difference of the game.

"It's great to finally see the fans start showing up to our games this year. It's no secret why we are 3-0 at home this season." - Coach Lewis. This game's attendance rose to 4426, the largest crowd yet in Lewis' tenure. Last year, the Tigers' largest crowd was 1339 in their 10 home games, despite winning the SWAC regular season title.

Columbia, MO - Last year, Texas Southern's season ended here at Mizzou Stadium during the first round of the NIT. This season, Missouri returned all of its starters, leading the Big 12 power into the national spotlight and the polls. Texas Southern was overwhelmed by the superior talent of Missouri in this game.

"It's one thing to face a team with superior size and speed. However, this is not an excuse for giving up 24 turnovers and the sloppy play, in general. We need to eliminate the foolish mistakes, especially if we are physically overmatched, like tonight." - Coach Lewis

Texas Southern tried double-teaming Jason Horton throughout the game. The strategy had moderate success in the first half, as Missouri's best perimeter shooter was neutralized. Strong contributions from Missouri's bench players Dandridge and Lawrence in the second half allowed Mizzou to wrap up the easy victory.

          Texas Southern Tigers
          J. Jones - 12 pts, 2 reb, 2 ast
          M. Bell - 10 pts, 11 rebs
          M. Kovacevcic - 10 pts, 4/10 fg, 2/4 3pt

          Missouri Tigers
          G. Dandridge - 18 pts, 4 reb, 7/17 fg, 2/7 3pt
          L. Lyons - 16 pts, 12 rebs
          J. Horton - 12 pts, 4 ast, 3 stl

Next Game - Texas Southern (3-3) @ Mississippi State (9-3)

Starkville, MS - "This may be hard to believe given the final score, but I'm impressed by many facets of our game tonight. We ran our fast break successfully throughout the game. We also were able to break the Bulldogs' 2-2-1 press consistently. We still had some mental lapses, but less than in prior games. There are definite signs of improvement despite the loss." - Coach Lewis

Mississippi State averaged less than 9 3-pt attempts per game in their first 12 games. To answer, Texas Southern challenged the Bulldogs with a 3-2 zone throughout. Miss St answered by shooting 58% in the first half (4/6 shooting 3-pters) to open a 17-pt halftime lead. The lead was built up in part by a 12-2 Bulldog run against the Tigers bench.

Reginald Delk led the scoring for Mississippi State with 25 pts (5/8 3pt). "Maybe we should have concentrated on Delk more defensively. All I know is that we were out-rebounded and out-scored in the post as is. The Bulldogs are just a very good team with diverse scoring threats." - Coach Lewis

            Texas Southern Tigers
            M. Kovacevic - 20 pts, 3 tos, 5/11 fg, 4/6 3pt, 6/7 ft

            J. Varnardo - 13 pts, 7 reb, 5/7 fg

Despite the extremely rough out-of-conference schedule, the team is doing great. The conference games will seem like a vacation compared to facing St.John's, Missouri, Mississippi State, and Georgia.

Kovacevic and Jones are providing a pretty good 1-2 punch for Texas Southern.

Athens, GA - Texas Southern came out in the second half playing masterful defense. Over the first five minutes of the second period, the Tigers outscored Georgia 10-0, closing the game deficit to 5 points. Then, the floor dropped out beneath TSU's shooting as they would score only 11 points more in the last 13 minutes, losing the game by 38 points in all.

"It doesn't matter who we play. We can't afford this kind of shooting drought against any team, SEC or SWAC. Our turnover problem came back in this game as well. This was disappointing after the strong effort against Mississippi State." - Coach Lewis

Thanks for the comments! Like in the Georgia game, if the Tigers shoot under 30%, they are losing to anyone.

However, up to now, every team we've faced has had a better overall rating (usually much better!). From this point on, TSU will have a better rating than each opponent, with the exception of Jackson State (who has the same rating at 69). Hopefully, the games will be more enjoyable, if not competitive.

                    • Grambling starting PF Willis Black left the game in the second half due to a high ankle sprain. He will be out for 24 days.

                        Houston, TX -
                        • Last year, Alabama A&M had three players on the SWAC All-Freshman team. Surprisingly, two of these players, Desmond Jackson and Ryan Parker, did not dress for the game, despite not being listed as injured or suspended. "It was surprising, especially since Jackson is their leading scorer this year. A&M Coach Pettaway is one of the best in the SWAC, so I'm sure there was a good reason." - Coach Lewis
                        • Texas Southern had 6 blocks in the first half, 4 blocks by C Matthew Bell in the opening period.
                        • AAMU C Mickell Gladness had only 1 block in the game, but led both teams with 14 rebounds.
                        • TSU opened the game effectively on defense with a man-to-man defense and double-team of Cornelius Hester. AAMU adjusted at the half by driving into the post more frequently and getting Lucas Laksa involved offensively. TSU tried calling mixed zone defenses to counter the inside shots bein taken. Finally, a straight man-to-man defense kept the TSU lead safe.

                            • The Good - "This was the first game all season in which the 10-pt rule kicked in. Anytime we are leading a game by more than 10 points in the last part of the second half, none of the starters return to finish the game. Last year, we regularly had this occur, so it was encouraging to see the team put an opponent away early this year." - Coach Lewis
                            • The Bad - 17 steals for Prairie View. The upside was freshman Mohammed Kovacevic had no turnovers in the game, only to see senior PG Dominique White commit six turnovers. "I'm at a loss for words right now." - Coach Lewis
                            • The Ugly - Looks like Coach Lewis may want to cut down on those chimichangas that he is so fond of.

                                • UAPB leading scorer Terrance Calvin played only 12 minutes due to foul trouble. He sat after only four minutes elapsed in the first half when drawing two quick fouls. In the second half, he drew a third foul in the first minute to sit for 10 more minutes.
                                • Despite playing on the road, TSU outscored UAPB in free throws 20/29 to 14/20.
                                • With 11:19 to go in the game, Mohammed Kovacevic connected on a 3-pt shot from the wing. This would turn out to be TSU's last field goal for the game. The Tigers did go 8/10 in free throws in the final 11 minutes.
                                • The scoring drought leads to 10-pt rule being terminated. The TSU reserves had built up their lead to 21 points, but the scoring drought allowed UAPB to close the lead to 10 points with 1:44 to go. The Tiger starters returned to the game, but only went 1/2 from the charity stripe to end the game.
