As happened when these two teams met earlier in the season, the Hornets' post players ran into early foul trouble and rode the bench for most of the first half. This allowed Texas Southern to build an early 10 point lead that was maintained for the rest of the game.

"Matthew Bell had a nice soft shooting touch today. He's showing some real improvement scoring inside. With this win, we are now in reach of two of our season goals. One more win and we clinch the regular season conference title. Two more wins and we reach the 20 victory mark for the season." - Coach Lewis

      Texas Southern Tigers
      C. Brown - 19 pts, 2 rebs, 7/21 fg, 3/10 ft

3/1/2007 - Prairie View, TX - Rival Prairie View surprised Alcorn State (12-5, 14-10) 72-66 to clinch the conference title for the Texas Southern Tigers (14-2, 18-6). The conference title ensures that TSU will play in either the NCAA or NIT tourneys at the end of the season.

Bracketology - Texas Southern moved back down to the #15 seed in the East, paired against Louisville again. (Do they recalculate the bracketology projections after every calendar day??) Cal Poly snuck into the #14 seed vs. Ohio State. A second Big West team, Sacramento State, is projected #16, tough small conference.

Houston, TX - On a day that should have been celebrated by the entire team, Coach Lewis was in no mood to party. The TSU Tigers have just dropped another conference game to Southern by the score of 66-59. Even worse was the steady decline in the Tigers' shooting percentage. Consider the following stats from recent games for TSU:

            FG %
            10-Febat Jackson StateW80-7540.70%
            12-Febat GramblingL71-8039.70%

            24-Febat Alabama A&MW81-6740.60%
            26-Febat Alabama StateW79-6935.20%
            1-MarSouthernL59-6630.40%

Over the last five games, TSU has seen its shooting deteriorate steadily. Only C Matthew Bell has shown any improvement offensively. However, given Bell's fatigue problems, contributions from his Tiger teammates is needed.

"Clearly, if we can't snap out of this offensive funk soon, our dreams of playing in the NCAA tourney or reaching 20 victories are not going to happen." - Coach Lewis

            Southern Jaguars
            J. Ingram - 13 pts, 10 rebs, 0/5 3pt
            S. Wiley - 11 pts, 3 ast

            Texas Southern Tigers
            C. Brown - 20 pts, 3 rebs, 7/22 fg, 2/10 3pt
            C. Moore - 0 pts, 17 rebs, 7 ast, 2 stl
            M. Bell - 15 pts, 4 rebs, 5/9 fg

Bracketology - With the loss, Texas Southern has dropped down to the projected #16 seed in the West regional, scheduled to face Tommy Amaker and the #1 seed Michigan Wolverines.

Houston, TX - Courtenay Brown continued his struggles (0 pts, 0/9 fg, 0/7 3pt) in this game. Fortunately for the Tigers, Brown also drew two quick fouls within the first three minutes of the first half. This allowed Sollie Norwood into the game, who shot 100% for his first 6 shots (15 pts, 3/3 3pt). In all, Norwood had 21 first half points to pace TSU to a 15 point halftime lead.

The Tigers came out stone cold again in the second half as Alcorn State scored the first eight points unanswered. After three minutes elapsed, Norwood came off the bench and stole the ball on two consecutive plays, pushing TSU's lead back over double digits. Norwood would add four points to his total in the second half, giving him 25 points overall.

                Alcorn State Braves
                D. Thompson - 22 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl, 8/13 fg, 3/5 3pt

Birmingham, AL - Alabama State opened up the game with a 21-4 lead and never looked back, upsetting the conference champion Texas Southern Tigers in the first round of the SWAC conference tournament. The closest that TSU was able to whittle the lead down to was four points before the Hornets would pad the lead further.

Cold shooting and a lack of diverse offensive threats doomed the Tigers once again. Courtenay Brown did open the second half of the game on fire, but it would prove to be too little and too late to salvage any NCAA hopes for TSU. "In the end, we needed to be able to score in the post. All season long, we needed to be able to score in the post and haven't been able to. You can't rely on one or two perimeter shooters to carry your team for the entire season, as we learned tonight." - Coach Lewis

I am enjoying this so far. I have started a Legacy with Northern Colorado and am having a really fun time with it. I'll probably post about it, but more towards the coaches point of view and not until I am really, really far into it, as over the years on this forum I never have finished what I've started.

Columbia, MO - In the first half, it appeared that the Missouri Tigers wanted to be anywhere but in this first round NIT game. Frequent turnovers and foul trouble allowed Texas Southern to maintain a small lead at the intermission. However, both teams reverted back to form in the second half, with Missouri scoring the first 12 points in the half. Likewise, TSU demonstrated the shooting inconsistency that has dogged the team throughout the second half of this season.

"This is a bitter disappointment. We lost three of our last four games when only one more victory would have lifted us to the 20-victory mark for the season. Not to mention missing out on an opportunity to represent the SWAC conference in the NCAA tournament. I suppose it is possible that my job is in jeopardy. I'll just have to ride it out and see what the feedback is from the athletic department." - Coach M. Lewis
