Injury Report

Chris Kelly - Arm Laceration

Return Date - Middle of April


In yesterday's game against the Blue Jackets, Chris Kelly was hit and suffered a large laceration on his arm. The cut runs down his forearm and he will not be able to play until the middle of April. Brian McGrattan will now play on the fourth line with Hennessy and McAmmond. This should not have a huge affect on Ottawa since the fourth line gets very limited minutes as they are making a push for top place in the Eastern Conference.

Ottawa Plays heart out, but Emery faulters

In quite possibly the game of the year, Ottawa could not score when they needed it most. After a last second goal in the first to tie the game at 1, Ottawa went down by 2 after 2 periods. With 20 minutes on the clock, Ottawa went to work, down by 2 goals. Jason Spezza quickly put a puck behind Fleury for a goal and to get within 1. After that Ottawa had a ton of momentum and used it. They were in the Pittsburgh zone for over half the period and were constantly peppering Fleury. Fleury would not budge and when Ottawa made the last minute push with 6 men on the ice, he held his ground. The Pittsbrugh defense could not do anything against the Ottawa offense, but Fleury won the game for the Penguins.

The other goalie in the game is a story on his own. He faced 12 shots, only 1 of them was a quality scoring chance and he lost the game. He let in the first shot of the game and let in two on the first 4 shots of the second period. After that he faced only 1 shot in the third. Ray Emery embarassed himself in the net tonight and will not get a start for the next few games.

Senators Report

(46-12-7)

February was another winning month for Ottawa, putting away 12 wins, in 15 games. Losses coming to Montreal, Pittsburgh and an OT loss to Philly. Ottawa scored 60 goals this month, and scored 5 or more in 5 games. Ottawa also allowed only 1 goal in 6 of the 15 games.

In February Ottawa had the chance to take away the Penguins momentum and take some points away from the red hot Pittsburgh team, but were beat out by one goal. Ottawa gets another chance at the Pens on the first of March.

Dany Heatley's scoring was significantly lower, putting only 3 behind goalies. Heatley did not stop scoring points though as he would put a helper on the board almost every game.

After the loss to Pittsburgh Emery was benched for the rest of the month, this proved detremental to the team as 11 goals were scored in the 3 games. Emery will get the start against Pittsburgh on the 1ast of March.

Last month there were rumors that Saprykin was going to be traded. The rumors are still there, but Saprykin is making a case to stay, doubling his point total this month.

Ottawa will need to have a very strong finish in Marsh and April if they want any chance at the Presidents trophy. They have 3 games against Montreal, 2 against Buffalo, 2 against Boston, 2 against Toronto, and a huge 4 game west coast trip. This is not the complete rest of the season but it is the big match-ups that are left.

NOTE: March and April will not get a report. Instead there will be an end of season report after the final game is played.

The rumors about Saprykin being moved were true. Even with some good performances on ice, Saprykin was shipped out for a younger Power Forward and a defenseman.

Bruno will most likely not get any playing time for the Senators. He will be sent to Binghamton where he will be one of the last choices for an NHL call-up.

Micheal Blunden, the biggest acquisition for Ottawa, has played 42 games in the AHL this year picking up 20 goals and 24 assists for 44 points. He has 13 powerplay goals and 3 game winners. Blunden also played 2 games with Chicago this year and picked up 2 assists. Blunden was drafted in 2005, 43rd overall and played only 11 total games in the NHL, with only 2 assists which came this year. Ottawa hopes that with a ample amount of playing time he can score his first career goal and with many more to follow. Blunden will play with Donovan and Neil on the third line, slotting in to Saprykins former line-up spot. If he does faulter, he will most likely move down to the fourth line with Hennessy and McGrattan as McAmmond would move up.
