Coakley Bounces Back In Splendid Fashion

Bennett Park,Detroit,Mi.-Following the nightmare of his last start, there was no telling how Andy Coakley would respond with his back against the wall, and the eyes of his manager squarely upon him.To his credit,Coakley responded in dominating fashion, going 9 strong innings and allowing 4 hits and 4 walks while fanning 3 in the Athletics 6-0 shutout victory. After playing scoreless baseball for the first two innings, the A's took advantage of 2 crucial 3rd inning Tiger miscues that allowed them to score 4 runs on just two hits giving Coakley a comfortable 4-0 cushion to work with. And work he did as he continually stayed ahead of the Detroit batters thwarting their every attempt to get back into the game. The A's added two more runs in the final two innings closing it out with a 6-0 win. Here's the box score.

Athletics Survive 9th Inning Comeback To Win 3-2
Bennett Park,Detroit Mi.-Buoyed by another strong performance by Rube Waddell, the Athletics won for the 4th time in 5 games with today's thrilling 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. In the top of the first,Danny Hoffman's leadoff single was quickly turned into the first run of the game when following Topsy Hartsel's sacrifice bunt,Lave Cross stroked a wicked base hit to left that scored Hoffman easily giving the A's the 1-0 lead.In the fourth, following a Monte Cross one out triple,Bris Lord executed a perfectly played suicide squeeze scoring Cross and landing Lord safely on first.Lord quickly found himself on third base courtesy of an errant throw on his attempted steal of second.Lord then made it 3-0 as he scored easily on Danny Murphy's ground out. From there, the game became the Rube Waddell show as he held the Tigers without a baserunner from the 3rd through the 8th inning. With one out in the 9th though, back to back singles followed by an error on SS Monte Cross gave Detroit runners on second and third with a run across making it 3-1.A weary Waddell then allowed a single to Ty Cobb making it 3-2 with runners on the corners and still only one out.Weldon Henley then entered the game for Waddell and with his back to the wall, slammed the door closed on Detroit preserving the 3-2 victory. Here's the box score.

So far this season Joss has a record of 6-4 with 30 strikeouts and 18 walks in 86 innings and a 2.51 ERA.

                Oh Lord!

Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-Athletics RF Bris Lord completed a stunning comeback with a clutch two out RBI single in the bottom of the 9th to give Philadelphia a stirring 3-2 come from behind victory over the rival Highlanders.Following four scoreless innings to start the game, the Highlanders got back to back two out singles in the 5th from Willie Keeler and Hal Chase putting runners on the corners. With Dave Fultz at the plate,Hal Chase broke for second on the first pitch but the throw from Needham went clear into center field allowing Keeler to score and Chase to go all the way to third.A rattled Chief Bender then uncorked a wild pitch scoring Chase and giving New York a 2-0 lead without Fultz having to lift the bat off of his shoulders.Inexplicibly,Bender then beaned Fultz before getting Rube Oldring to ground out to end the inning. The A's closed the gap to 2-1 in the 6th on a Topsy Hartsel RBI ground out that scored Chief Bender who doubled to lead off the inning.Entering the bottom of the 9th,the Athletics still found themselves down 2-1 when Lave Cross came to the plate to start the inning.Cross proceeded to double high off of the left center field fence and immediately the A's were in business.Harry Davis came to the plate and grounded out to 2nd moving L. Cross to third for Monte Cross.Monte then laid a beautiful squeeze bunt down the third base line scoring L.Cross in a hail of dust, leather and sharpened spikes. With the game now tied at 2 and a runner on first and one out,Harry Barton came to the plate to face NY starter Al Orth. With the count 0-1, Cross broke for second and successfully stole his first base of the season.Barton then grounded out to short moving Cross to third with two outs for Bris Lord.Bris then lined a 1-1 pitch into right field scoring Cross as his jubilant teammates rushed from the dugout to mob him at first base. With the win,the A's leap frog NY to move into third place,10 games behind 31-9 Chicago. Here's the box score.

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a match-up of two of baseball's best hurlers, the Athletics Rube Waddell faced off against Highlanders ace Jack Chesbro for the third time this season with Chesbro holding the 2-0 edge on Big Rube.In today's game,Chesbro again looked to be getting the better of Waddell holding Philadelphia hitless through four scoreless innings. In the 5th though, the A's finally got to Happy Jack when back to back two baggers by Danny Murphy and Rube Waddell gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.Danny Hoffman then singled giving Philly runners on the corners with one out for Topsy Hartsel who grounded to deep short scoring Waddell and making it 2-0 after 5 innings of play.In the seventh,Hal Chase's sacrifice fly scored Wid Conroy (who tripled earlier in the inning) making it a 2-1 game.Entering the 9th with the score still at 2-1,Waddell gave up a single to Doc Casey but then quickly fanned Jack Chesbro for the first out.Wid Conroy then flied out to right leaving Rube one out away from his 5th straight win,John Anderson then grounded to second but first baseman Harry Davis dropped the throw from Danny Murphy keeping NY alive with runners on first and second.A frustrated and tired Waddell then walked Jimmy Barrett to load the bases for Frank Laporte. At this point,Connie Mack lifted Rube for ace reliever Weldon Henley who got Laporte to fly out harmlessly to right saving the 2-1 victory for the A's! Here's the box score.

                        Chief Bender Does It All!
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a nailbiter here at Columbia Park,The Athletics continued their torrid winning with a 3-2 victory over the lowly Washingto Senators. The A's Harry Davis got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a two out RBI double that scored Danny Hoffman who led off the inning with a single.Monte Cross made it 2-0 with another two hit,a single to left that scored Harry Davis .The Senators would not just roll over though, closing the gap to 2-1 on a sac fly by Mike Heydon.Over the next several innings, neither team could get anything going off of their opposing pitchers and the score remained 2-1 until the 8th when surprisingly, the Senators tied the game on a two out triple by Rabbitt Nill.In the 9th,the A's were given a golden opportunity when Senators first baseman Jake Stahl muffed a ground ball early in the inning resulting in two baserunners for Philadelphia with one out.As the inning progressed,Chief Bender came to the plate with runners on 2nd and 3rd and two outs needing only a base hit to win the ballgame,Bender then sent a 3-2 Barney Wolfe fastball over the head of the shortstop into left field for the game winning RBI single! With the 3-2 victory, the Athletics have now won 8 of their last 9 ballgames improving their record to 24-18,a full 9 games back of the phenomenal White Sox.Here's the box score.

Saturday, June 3rd, 1905: Wicker Hot, Pirates Cold
Bob Wicker put a hex on Pittsburgh in a sparkling 3-0 shutout performance, mesmerizing them on a 5-hit gem.

"I feel good physically," he said. "Everything's comfortable. You should pitch well when that's the case."

It was anything but comfortable for Pittsburgh.

"Wicker used his changeup very well, very effectively," the opposing manager said. "He threw it in hitter's counts."

The Chicago Cubs hurler fanned 4 and walked 1.

To date this year in 11 starts, Wicker has crafted a 6-4 mark with a 2.19 ERA

Sunday, June 4th, 1905: GM Howell Fired by Washington Senators
Sources close to the Washington situation have been calling for the dismissal of general manager Bob Howell for weeks now. While Howell was able to hold onto the reins despite the club's recent downturn, he ultimately lost his grip and was sent packing today.

Team officials said they preferred for the Senators to go in a different direction and they had nothing but the utmost respect for Howell.

This Week's Players Of The Week!

Monday, June 5th, 1905: NL's Star Player Named
25-year-old Art Devlin sent shock waves through Major League Baseball last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the National League Player of the Week Award.

A newcomer to the league, Devlin made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .462 average, 12 hits in 26 at-bats, 1 home run and 3 RBI.

Where the New York Giants third baseman goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Devlin certainly made his mark last week.

Currently Devlin has 1 home run and a .238 batting average.

Monday, June 5th, 1905: Red-Hot Rampage Reaps AL Reward
A battle-tested Buck Freeman declared war on opposing pitchers last week, attacking the ball like the well-schooled veteran he is. Today the 33-year-old Boston right fielder collected the American League Player of the Week Award.

He wrapped up the week with a .438 average, 14 hits in 32 at-bats, no home runs, 3 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

To date this year Freeman is batting .360 with no home runs.
