Re: Return to Glory - A Michigan Dynasty

Wolverines sneak out of Champaign with Win.

    CHAMPAIGN, Illinois --
Do not be fooled by the final score, the Wolverines dominated this football game. They held the Fighting Illini to just over 200 yards of offense, while racking up 350 yards of their own. The Illini stayed close thanks to a couple of costly turnovers by the Wolverines, and a great return by Arrelious Benn.

Michigan kicker Michael Motley hit a field goal from 35 yards out to put the first points on the board for either team. On the ensuing kickoff, Illini receiver Arrelious Benn showed off his blazing speed and took the kick back 97 yards for his first return touchdown of the season. The Wolverines would respond quickly with one of their best drives of the game, as they drove down the field, capping it off with a six-yard touchdown run by Sam McGuffie to give them a 10-7 lead.

Despite the early touchdown run, McGuffie struggled somewhat in his third career collegiate start. The junior averaged just 3.5 yards per carry, rushing for 74 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries. McGuffie did have a much better day than Illinois running back Derrick Washington, however. Washington carried the ball 24 times and only gained 57 yards, and did not score a touchdown.

The Wolverines would increase their lead late in the second quarter, as Steven Threet found receiver Martavious Odoms in the back of the endzone to make it a 17-7 lead. The Illini would respond with a field goal as time expired in the half, and they entered the locker room at halftime down by just seven points.

Another field goal by the Illini kicked off the scoring in the second half of the game, but the Wolverines would quickly respond. Threet threw his second touchdown pass of the day, this one to Junior Hemingway, and it would be the last offensive touchdown for either team. Two minutes later, Threet would make his only mistake of the day, as cornerback Miami Thomas jumped a route and picked off Threet's pass. Thomas then turned on the jets and returned the interception 36 yards for the Illini's only touchdown of the game.

Both kickers would trade field goals in the fourth quarter, but the Illini could not mount a comeback and fall to the Wolverines 27-23. The Wolverines improve to 3-1 after their 16-game winning streak was broken last week with a loss at Notre Dame. The Illini fall to 2-2 on the season.

The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor this week after two straight road games. They face a tough test on Saturday as they host the #17 Wisconsin Badgers. The Badgers are 4-0 this season, with their key victory being a 30-23 win over Fresno State two weeks ago.

          Wolverines Crush the Badgers

          ANN ARBOR, Michigan --
The Big House in Ann Arbor is a very hard place to win a football game as the visiting team. The home of the Michigan Wolverines is one of the oldest stadiums in the nation, and is the home field for the winningest programs in FBS college football history.

The Wolverines have won fourteen straight games on their home field, the third longest active streak in the FBS. The last time the Wolverines lost in Ann Arbor was two seasons ago, when the Wisconsin Badgers narrowly defeated the Wolverines. Since that game, they have been perfect in the Big House, and they exacted a little revenge on the Badgers yesterday when they crushed them 45-17, handing the Badgers their first loss of the season.

The game started off well for the Badgers, as running back Tariq Myers busted off a 53 yard run for a touchdown on the Badger's first drive to give them their only lead of the game. The Wolverines would respond less than a minute later when Steven Threet threw his first of four touchdown passes on the day, this one to Junior Hemingway. Later in the quarter, Threet threw another touchdown pass to freshman tight end Brandon Bryan to give the Wolverines a 14-7 lead after seven minutes.

The Wolverines would never look back after taking the lead late in the first quarter. Steven Threet went on to have the best game of his career, as he threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns. After not throwing for four touchdown passes in any game in his first two seasons of football, Threet has thrown four three times in just five games this season.

Despite winning their game handily over a ranked opponent, the Wolverines actually dropped from #7 to #8 in this week's AP Poll. There was a major shakeup this week in the Top 5 after former #1 Oklahoma dropped to #9 thanks to a 40-37 loss at home to Texas, who jumped from #11 to #4. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who defeated the Wolverines two weeks ago, are now ranked #1 in the nation, with Tennesse taking their former spot at #2.

The Wolverines look to continue on their new winning streak as they head to West Lafayette next week for a showdown with Purdue. The Boilermakers have lost three and a row, and are just 1-4 on the season. Their only win came in week two over Central Michigan.
