Re: Return to Glory - A Michigan Dynasty

    Conquering Camp Randall

    MADISON, Wisconsin --
Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin is one of the hardest stadiums in the Big Ten to win a football game in as a visiting team. The Michigan Wolverines upset the #5 Wisconsin Badgers in Camp Randall yesterday, but it was far from an easy victory for the Maize and Blue.

The Badgers gained 363 yards of offense, a season-high for yards allowed by a very talented and speedy Michigan defense. Wisconsin quarterback Dustin Sherer did, however, throw two very costly interceptions that may have cost the Badgers the game. The Wolverines also had very good field position all game, because return man Donovan Warren returned three punts for an average of 28 yards per return, and two kickoffs for an average of 33 yards.

Running back Brandon Minor was the Player of the Game for the Wolverines for the third time in four games this season. Minor has rushed for more than 100 yards in all four games this season, including 147 yards yesterday. Minor scored two touchdowns on the ground against the Badgers, raising his season total to six.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season thus far for the Wolverines has been the performance of freshman placekicker Michael Motley. After the Michigan kicking game was very mediocre last season, Motley has been near perfect through four games in 2009. With his three field goals in three attempts yesterday, Motley improved to 11-for-13 this season, and has yet to miss an extra point.

After the Badgers narrowly defeated the Wolverines in their Big Ten Opener last season in Ann Arbor, this victory was especially sweet for Michigan. The Wolverines now return to the Big House for a match-up with the Purdue Boilermakers last week. The Boilermakers won their first two games of the season, but lost their Big Ten opener yesterday at home against Northwestern.

              Shootout in the Big House

              ANN ARBOR, Michigan --
The defense was supposed to be the weak part of the Wolverines 2009 team, but through five games the Wolverines defense looks like one of the best ever.

The Wolverines were absolutely stifling yesterday when the Purdue Boilermakers came to Ann Arbor, especially against the run. The Boilermakers rushed the ball just 16 times, and lost four yards on the ground. The -4 rushing yards allowed by the Michigan defense is a season-low and Purdue could not get anything going on the ground.

Purdue Quarterback Justin Siller kept the Boilermakers in it with his 280 passing yards and touchdown, but it was not enough to stave off defeat. The Boilermakers held a 21-20 lead going into halftime, thanks to some nice passing by Siller and a fumble return for a touchdown by the Purdue defense.

The Wolverines would completely dominate in the second half, as they outscored Purdue 13-0 in the second half, eventually winning their fifth straight game by the score of 33-21.

Michigan has now won six straight games going back to the Capital One Bowl victory over Auburn last season, and they have won eight straight games at home. The Wolverines now head on the road for just the second time this season, as they travel to East Lansing next week to battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy with the Michigan State Spartans.

                  Wolverines dominate Rival Spartans

                  EAST LANSING, Michigan --
Last year's game between the Spartans and the Wolverines was a classic, as it took four overtimes for the Wolverines to beat the Spartans 46-40. This season's edition of the storied Big Ten rivalry was nowhere near as close, as the Wolverines manhandled their opponent 27-6 in their sixth consecutive victory to open the 2009 season.

Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins showed his inexperience yesterday, as he struggled mightily against a great Michigan defense. Cousins threw three interceptions and just 198 yards through the air. Michigan quarterback Steven Threet on the other hand, threw for only 168 yards on 18 completions, but did throw for two touchdowns.

Brandon Minor continues to be the best running back in the Big Ten and the motor of the Wolverines offense. Minor rushed for 111 yards on twenty carries in the game, and now has gone over 100 yards in every game this season. Minor is currently first in the Big Ten and fourth in the nation in rushing yards (814), and is tied with Ohio State's Brandon Saine for the most rushing touchdowns in the Big Ten with seven.

In one week, the Wolverines head to New York for a showdown with the Buffalo Bulls. This is the first and only time this season that the Wolverines will play two straight road games. The Bulls are 4-2 this season, with losses to Temple and at Northern Illinois.

Nice win over pesky Sparty and those Spartans. By the way, how is Georgia 2-3 and still in the top 25!

Close Call in the Big House

                        ANN ARBOR, Michigan --
It might not have been the prettiest win of their season, but the Michigan Wolverines still got the job done, beating the Illinois Fighting Illini 28-26 yesterday in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines are now 8-0 with just four games left in their 2009 season.

Michigan receiver Darryl Stonum is putting together a great sophomore season for the Wolverines and added to it yesterday with a game-changing performance. Stonum caught twelve passes, more than any other Michigan receiver combined in the game. Stonum averaged 13.6 yards per catch, racking up a career-high 164 yards and his sixth touchdown catch of the season. Last season as a freshman, Stonum caught six touchdown catches all season, so he has already had caught as many this season with five games left.

Running back Brandon Minor rushed for 1048 yards last season, and with his 111 yards yesterday, he reached 1078 yards this season. Minor has rushed for more than 100 yards every game this season, and his rushing touchdown yesterday gives him a Big-Ten best ten for the season.

The Michigan offense was very good yesterday against the Illini despite turning the ball over three times. Quarterback Steven Threet threw two interceptions, but made up for them by throwing for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Threet had great protection in the game, as the Illinois front seven had just three hurries and one sack.

The two-point margin of victory yesterday was the slimmest for the Wolverines thus far this season. That may come as a concern to some Michigan fans, as the Illini have yet to win a game this season, and have returned again to the basement of the Big Ten. The three turnovers the Wolverines had yesterday may not cost them a victory against Illinois, but miscues like that when they face Penn State and then Ohio State their last two games of the season, may cost them a visit to Pasadena.

The Wolverines will play their third away game this month next week as they head to Bloomington to face the Hoosiers of Indiana. The Hoosiers are coming off two straight losses to Wisconsin and Iowa, and they have struggled to a mediocre 3-4 record so far in 2009.

                            Another One Bites the Dust

                            BLOOMINGTON, Indiana --
Nine games down, three to go. The #6 Michigan Wolverines improved to 9-0 and 5-0 in conference play in the 2009 season with a 26-7 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers in Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.

Despite the fact that he threw only one touchdown pass, Michigan quarterback Steven Threet had a career day yesterday. The sophomore reached career-highs in completions (31), attempts (50), and passing yards (323) against the Hoosiers. The big game by Threet meant that a lot of Michigan receivers had big days. Junior Hemingway and Darryl Stonum both caught nine passes, and Stonum led all receivers with 117 receiving yards. Six receivers caught two or more passes in the game, and five of them had over 20 yards receiving.

However, as good as Threet was, there was no doubt in anyone's mind who carried the Michigan offense yesterday. Running back Brandon Minor reached the century mark for the ninth consecutive game, as he racked up 123 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown. Threet also ran for twenty-one yards and his second rushing touchdown of the season.

Going into the fourth and final quarter, the Wolverines held just a 12-7 lead over the Hoosiers. The only score of the first half was a field goal by Wolverines kicker Michael Motley, as both defenses manhandled the opposing offenses. The teams traded touchdowns mid-way through the third quarter, but a late safety by the Wolverines defense gave them a five point lead going into the fourth quarter.

It was in the fourth quarter that the Michigan offense dominated, as they scored fourteen points in the final seven minutes of play. Brandon Minor scored his only touchdown of the game two minutes in, and tight end Jon Bills caught Threet's touchdown pass about two minutes later. The Michigan defense helped out too, as they forced two of the five turnovers the Hoosiers had in the fourth.

The Wolverines have another "warm-up" game next week as they play the Northwestern Wildcats in Ann Arbor. The Wildcats are 3-5, have lost four straight games, and have the worst offense in the Big Ten in almost every category.

                                Crushing the Wildcats

                                ANN ARBOR, Michigan --
It may not have been the prettiest win, but the Michigan Wolverines beat the Northwestern Wildcats 41-18 yesterday in Ann Arbor to improve to 10-0. The Wolverines were just 1-10 on third down and gained just 160 yards through the air, but a good running game and solid defense led them to victory.

Michigan quarterback Steven Threet threw for only 160 yards yesterday, but he threw a career-high three touchdown passes and just one interception. Wide receivers Darryl Stonum and Toney Clemons, along with tight end Carson Butler all caught touchdown passes from Threet yesterday.

It was the running game that kept the Michigan offense on track against the Wildcats and eventually led them to yet another win. Five Wolverines combined to rush for 202 yards in the game, including a 113-yard performance by starting running back Brandon Minor on 20 carries. In the fourth quarter, Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez brought in sophomore sensation Sam McGuffie for some mop-up work, and the youngster put on a show. On his third rushing attempt, McGuffie broke lose and scampered seventy-five yards for a touchdown.

Northwestern quarterback Mike Kafka threw for 258 yards yesterday, the most passing yards the Wolverines defense has allowed so far this season. Kafka did not manage to throw for a touchdown, but he did throw an interception. The Wolverines got after the senior all game, as they brought him down in the backfield six times, five of them in the first half. Defensive tackle Jason Kates recorded two sacks, while Adam Patterson, William Lewis, Ronaldo Sagesse, and Obi Ezeh all had one a piece.

The Wildcats rushed for 102 yards yesterday, the second highest total this season against the Michigan defense. They are just the second team to run for 100 yards or more against the Wolverines, joining the Wisconsin Badgers, who ran for 113 in week five. Running back Stephen Simmons led the attack, rushing for 74 yards on 18 carries, but he did not score.

The Wolverines now enter the toughest stretch of their schedule this season. Next week, they head to University Park for a showdown with Joe Paterno and the #13 Nittany Lions in their final road game of 2009. Then, its a showdown in the Big House as #1 Ohio State will visit for the final game of the Wolverines season in "The Game". If both teams win this weekend, then the game in two weeks will likely decide who wins the Big Ten, and perhaps who earns a spot in the National Championship Game.
