Taking the Fight out of the Illini

            ANN ARBOR, Michigan --
The Michigan Wolverines rebounded from their first loss of 2008 to defeat the visiting Illinois Fighting Illini 38-21 in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines offense, that had been struggling so far this season, scored a season-high 38 points and racked up 333 offensive yards.

Where the Wolverines really dominated yesterday was the running game. Six different players had at least one rushing attempt yesterday for Michigan, and they combined to rack up 203 yards on the ground.

Brandon Minor, the starting running back for the Wolverines, was knocked out of the game with an injury mid-way through the third quarter after running for 73 yards on 21 carries. The speedy Carlos Brown rushed for 46 yards on 12 carries, and also scored his second touchdown of the season in a quarter and a half. Freshman Sam McGuffie touched the ball five times, and averaged over five yards per carry. Senior Kevin Grady added to the attack with a ten yard touchdown scamper of his own.

The Illinois offense struggled against the Wolverines, mostly because of the poor performance by Quarterback Juice Williams. Williams completed less than half of his pass attempts for just 106 yards, no touchdowns, and a season-high three interceptions. Williams left the game for a few plays in the second quarter after a hard hit, and that might have effected his performance. In his absence, back-up Eddie McGee threw for 49 yards and a touchdown on just three passes.

Coming off a big win to bring their conference record to .500, the Wolverines will play their last non-conference game of the season next week when they host Toledo in Ann Arbor. The Rockets are coming off a big upset of Ball State, and have also beat Fresno State this season.

            Scoring Summary

Wolverines receive first commitments of 08

Coming of a 34-7 victory over Toledo, the Michigan Wolverines received their first commitments of the 2008 season, as two high school seniors declared their desire to play for the University of Michigan.

With two senior graduating this offseason, the Wolverines will start some new faces next season at cornerback. Cedric Thomas figures to be one of those new starters, as he committed to Michigan earlier this morning. Thomas is ranked as the best cornerback in the nation, and the 6'2", 161 pound senior from Freeport, Illinois is expected to start in 2009.

The Wolverines also received a commitment yesterday from the second-highest ranked prospect in the country. Defensive tackle William Lewis from Lincoln Park, Michigan committed to the University just after the game, which he was attending with his family. Lewis is also likely to start next season for Rich Rodriguez.

Wolverines Beat Penn State, but lose Threet

                    COLLEGE PARK, Pennsylvania --
The Wolverines pulled off a stunner on the road yesterday as they beat the Penn State Nittany Lions 19-13 in overtime. After a disappointing loss to Wisconsin in their Big Ten Opener, this win vaults the Wolverines back into the Big Ten title hunt.

The win came at a cost however, as the Wolverines lost starting quarterback Steven Threet for six weeks after he was sacked yesterday and broke three ribs. Threet had played adequately thus far in 2008, as he had thrown for 1214 yards, thirteen touchdowns, and ten interceptions in his first seven games.

With Threet out, the Wolverines are down to just two true quarterbacks on their team, sophomore Nick Sheridan and junior David Cone. Sheridan competed with Threet this spring for the starting job, and he will have the first shot at replacing Threet next week against Michigan State in Ann Arbor.

When wide receiver Junior Hemingway was sidelined with an injury four weeks ago, many people wondered which young Michigan receiver would step up and take his place. Electrifying freshman Darryl Stonum has done that, and showed why he was recruited so heavily. Stonum needed just four catches yesterday to rack up 105 yards, including an 80 yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. In his first year in college, Stonum is leading the Wolverines in receptions (33), receiving yards (492), and touchdowns (5).

Through three quarters, the Wolverines held a 10-6 lead over the hometown Nittany Lions, and no points had been scored since there was seven minutes left in the second quarter. Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark finally got the offense going, throwing a short touchdown pass to Jordan Norwood with four minutes left to take their first lead of the game. With Threet already out, Sheridan led the Wolverines down the field to respond with a 44 yard field goal, a career-long for senior kicker K.C. Lopata.

The Lions had the ball first in overtime, but disaster quickly ensued. On the first play of overtime, Clark threw his fifth interception of the contest, meaning the Wolverines needed just a field goal to sneak out of College Park with a big victory. They got that and more, as a big pass from Sheridan to Greg Mathews got the Wolverines to the two-yard line, where running back Brandon Minor pounded the ball into the endzone for the victory.

                    Scoring Summary

                        Wolverines continue to attract prospects

                        MLB Dominic Hill
The best linebacker in the country committed to the University of Michigan last night. Hill, a Batavia, New York native, also received scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Tennessee, LSU, and USC.

                        FS Jonathan Amos
The highest-ranked free safety prospect already committed to USC, but the Wolverines got the second-best free safety in the nation. Amos is on the short side, at just 5-11, but is known as a hard hitter and efficient at stopping the run. His only scholarship offer was from the Wolverines, but he also considered attending Ohio State, Penn State, and Georgia.

                        SS Marshall McCoy
Canada's best high school prospect in 2008 will play and likely start for the Wolverines in 2009. McCoy is from Edmonton, and is large for a safety, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing in at 198 pounds. McCoy also received offers from Penn State and Oregon.

Wolverines win thriller over rival Spartans

                          ANN ARBOR, Michigan --
When Brandon Harrison knocked down Brian Hoyer's pass on fourth down in the fourth overtime with the Wolverines up 46-40, the Big House in Ann Arbor erupted with a cheer that was surely heard all the way back in East Lansing.

The teams had battled for nearly four and a half hours in what was one of the greatest games in the oft-forgotten rivalry between the Spartans of Michigan State and the Michigan Wolverines. The 86 combined points were the second most in the history of the rivalry, trailing only the 119-0 victory by the Wolverines in 1902, in just the second game ever played by the two schools.

In 1953, Michigan governor G. Mennen Williams presented the Spartans, who won the contest, a four-foot tall statue depicting Paul Bunyan, the legendary lumberjack of American folklore. Ever since, the Wolverines and Spartans have played some exciting and high-scoring game, but none were as good as yesterday's.

Going into halftime, the Spartans had dominated and held a 21-7 lead over the floundering Wolverines. Quarterback Nick Sheridan, filling in for the injured Steven Threet, threw two interceptions in the first half, and it was clear that the offense was not clicking under Sheridan. The Spartans got hit hard with the injury bug early, as stud running back Javon Ringer was carted off the field with strained shoulder on just his second carry. The offense did not seem to suffer, however, as Quarterback Brian Hoyer threw touchdown passes and reserve tailback Caulton Ray ran for a touchdown.

Whatever speech head coach Rich Rodriguez gave the Wolverines at half-time, it must have been a good one. On their first drive of the second half, the Wolverines got it to the Spartan's forty yard line, but there the drive stalled and they were forced to punt. The punt was a good one, and it was downed on the two yard line. The Wolverines defense held firm, and Michigan State Brett Swenson had to attempt a punt from his own endzone. Swenson took just a second too long, and Michigan linebacker Austin Panter burst through the line and knocked Swenson over before he punted the ball, causing a safety that made it 21-9. Michigan would score ten more points in the quarter, and the Spartans held a narrow 21-19 lead going into the fourth.

Swenson made up for the punt by knocking through a forty-four yard field goal on the first drive of the quarter to make it a five point lead. But the Wolverines responded and marched down the field to score a touchdown and a two-point conversion to go up by three points with 1:31 later. However, with exactly one second left in the contest, Swenson hit his second field goal of the quarter to send the game into overtime.

The longest game in the history of the rivalry went into the fourth overtime, with the teams trading a pair of touchdowns in the first overtime, and then field goal in the second and third. Then, in the fourth overtime, Michigan running back Brandon Minor scored his third rushing and fourth overall touchdown of the game, and the Wolverines defense held the Spartans scoreless on their drive to seal a huge victory.

After two straight overtime games, the Wolverines would like to have their next game in West Lafayette, Indiana against Purdue to be a little less stressful. The Boilermakers have been disappointing thus far in Joe Tiller's final season, but a win this weekend could get their season back on track.

What type of offense are you running? I am assuming with the lack of mobility at QB you are not running Rich Rodriguez's offense.

my offense is extremely fluid and what I run depends on who is hot and what the game situation is. I use the spread mostly when the game is tied or when I am down. I rely on a ridiculously good line and quick receiver routes to make up for the lack of mobility under center.
